Arab Spring Veteran Hails ‘Revolution’ in America: Reporting From Inside Occupy Wall Street’s General Assembly

This afternoon in New York City, I watched as Occupy Wall Street tried to turn New York‘s Washington Square into a launchpad for Cairo’s Tahrir Square here at home.Arab Spring Veteran Hails Revolution in America

The General Assembly– Occupy Wall Street’s cross between the Politburo and a summer camp powwow– held the Washington Square Rally to unify the protest’s message and attract new recruits. The main effort of the Occupiers has become spreading the movement into every sector of society and promoting the occupation of every city and town. They are explicit about this, and they are serious.

At around 3:15 p.m., I nestled into the crowd of well over a thousand Occupiers as the General Assembly kicked off. The crowd practiced a human megaphone technique of staged repetition, which makes every speech three times as long as it should be. Even when Occupy organizers tried to keep it short, it reminded me of Castro’s famous 6 hour long addresses on the revolution and sugar cane harvests to captive (literally) crowds.Arab Spring Veteran Hails Revolution in America

But it was worth braving the inanity and pungent odors wafting through the crowd to learn the techniques and plans of the Occupy Wall Street movement. I now know first-hand their signals, working groups, and plans to bring down capitalism.

Despite early criticism of their fragmented message and lack of clear goals, the protest organizers made it clear to the crowd that they have stepped up their game. They have received help from Unions, media consultants, and donations from abroad. Now that they have solidified their initial beachhead at Zuccotti Park (Liberty Plaza) and want the Occupy movement to metastasize across America.

Organizers spoke about their various “working groups” such as Labor, Media, and Public Relations. All of these protest sub-units are intended to provide daily support for the protestors, unify their message, and coordinate “direct action.” The direct action cell is responsible for coming up with activities that will force a police response, and garner more press attention when the batons and pepper spray inevitably come out.

The highlight for the Wall Street occupiers was a keynote speech by a man named Muhammad who claimed to be a veteran of the Arab Spring revolt in Cairo. Muhammad got the crowd fired up with these words below:

“I am an Arab Citizen from Egypt. I am coming from there, from the Arab Spring to the fall of Wall Street, from the Arab Spring from Liberation Square to Washington Square to the fall of Wall Street and market domination, and capitalist domination, many things separate us- national borders, homeland insecurities, armies, corporations, and police. They have their laws, they have their debts, and we have our Revolution.”

You can watch the video of Muhammad from Tahrir Square rallying the General Assembly here:

Muhammad continued on to say in the second video clip: “They can cuff our hands, but they will never cuff our ideas and revolutionary souls… we have nothing to lose, except our chains. Long live Revolution.”

After the crowd cheered Muhammad’s revolutionary zeal, I wandered among them for a couple of hours, speaking to those with signs or who sought out anyone with a camera to explain their reasons for Occupation. In a nod to the various viral videos of quasi-insane, anti-semitic, or deeply ignorant protestors that have hit the web in the past few weeks, rally organizers yelled numerous times that all Occupiers should avoid saying things that hurt the movement.

Arab Spring Veteran Hails Revolution in AmericaOne of the more prevalent themes today was that of student loan debt. There were many placards referring to the chains and bonds of graduate students who owe tens of thousands of dollars.

Some of these students gave interviews to an eager press corps stretching from local New York outlets to international conglomerates. None of the students that I overheard ever asked “Why does college have to cost so much today?” Instead, the focus was always on the banks. Universities are apparently sacrosanct.

As I mingled, it was clear the Occupiers have a more unified message, and their presentation is much more slick than what I saw on September 17th. But at their core, the protestors’ grievances were leftism a la carte. Their answer to every grievance was always increased state control regardless of the issue. Somehow in the midst of all this outrage at injustices large and small, from banks to student loans,  I didn’t hear one word, nor did I read one sign, that criticized the White House.

An effigy of Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein’s bloody severed head on a pike, however, was happily paraded around for all protestors to cheer.Arab Spring Veteran Hails Revolution in America

And as I left Washington Square Park, listening to the usual chants of “we are the 99%“ and ”Wall Street got bailed out we got sold out,” I was struck by a new, insidious addition to the mindless slogans. It was something one of the chief organizers said to close out the General Assembly, and others in the crowd were repeating over and over again.

“Occupy everything,” they chanted.

As a citizen of the United States. I demand that the police and the military move to support and defend the Constitution of The United States.

I demand Congress issue an arrest Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid, and that the military move in and shut down the Federal Reserve.

If they will not then it is relegated to the peaceful citizens of the United States’ right, and DUTY to make it happen.

WOW! That Arab Spring really did work wonders! Mr. Everyman Muhammud can now vacation in New York City! I think he needs to set up an exchange program so the New York revolutionaries can go to Egypt and see the incredibly free and comfortable lifestyle the revolution has brought to Egypt! A two week homestay would probably suffice. And their Egyptian counterparts could come to New York as a reminder of “where” they were in Egypt such a short time ago….After two weeks they would certainly be itching to get on that plane back to Egypt….

@Robespierre, this explains your movement and what the future holds should it succeed.
      CG Jung
All mass movements, as one might expect, slip with the greatest of ease down an inclined plane made up of large numbers. Where the many are, there is security; what the many believe must of course be true; what the many want must be worth striving for, and necessary, and therefore good. In the clamour of the many resides the power to snatch wish-fulfilments by force; sweetest of all, however, is that gentle and painless slipping back into the kingdom of childhood, into the paradise of parental care, into happy-go-luckiness and irresponsibility. All the thinking and looking after are done from the top; to all questions there is an answer, and for all needs the necessary provision is made. The infantile dream-state of the mass man is so unrealistic that he never thinks to ask who is paying for this paradise. The balancing of accounts is left to a higher political or social authority, which welcomes the task, for its power is thereby increased; and the more power it has, the weaker and more helpless the individual becomes.

Whenever social conditions of this type develop on a large scale, the road to tyranny lies open and the freedom of the individual turns into spiritual and physical slavery.

Little by little the indoctrination has gotten worse and people haven’t noticed. These kids do not understand what they are are asking for or protesting against. There is much to be cleaned up in the Great White North. Mounties that wear turbans, native Americans occupying sections of the Trans Canada highway, Sikh boys barely out of puberty wearing their daggers in public, a public healthcare system that exceeds 10% of GDP. The Canadian Government is completely sold out to political correctness and socialism. Look inwards first.

Why do they all say the same thing? Tocqueville explained it: I seek to trace the novel features under which despotism may appear in the world. The first thing that strikes the observation is an innumerable multitude of men, all equal and alike, incessantly endeavoring to procure the petty and paltry pleasures with which they glut their lives. Each of them, living apart, is as a stranger to the fate of all the rest; his children and his private friends constitute to him the whole of mankind. As for the rest of his fellow citizens, he is close to them, but he does not see them; he touches them, but he does not feel them; he exists only in himself and for himself alone; and if his kindred still remain to him, he may be said at any rate to have lost his country.

Above this race of men stands an immense and tutelary power, which takes upon itself alone to secure their gratifications and to watch over their fate. That power is absolute, minute, regular, provident, and mild. It would be like the authority of a parent if, like that authority, its object was to prepare men for manhood; but it seeks, on the contrary, to keep them in perpetual childhood: it is well content that the people should rejoice, provided they think of nothing but rejoicing. For their happiness such a government willingly labors, but it chooses to be the sole agent and the only arbiter of that happiness; it provides for their security, foresees and supplies their necessities, facilitates their pleasures, manages their principal concerns, directs their industry, regulates the descent of property, and subdivides their inheritances: what remains, but to spare them all the care of thinking and all the trouble of living?

Simple – the protests in the Middle East were in response to despotic leadership. The primary pair of ideologies arising from the ashes are either Islamist and demand religious control of the nation, or liberal/socialist demanding democratic control of the political and economic realm. As the Islamists are demanding a return to despotism (just under a color they prefer) they are counterrevolutionary to the gains made in the Arab Spring, and I should hope the majority of the peoples of Egypt, Libya, and elsewhere acknowledge this.

I disagree with your assessment of both political philosophies, RLTW. You can have statist socialism, where the means of production are directly controlled by the state, or you can have libertarian socialism (Anarcho-Communism, if you’re sufficiently radical) where the means of production are directly controlled by the people who use them (ie, workplace democracies, labor syndicates, credit unions over banking corporations, etc.)

If you want to stand against USSR-style state socialism, I’ll stand with you. But that’s not the goal of #OCCUPYWALLSTREET or much of the radical American Left, which is as much antigovernment as it is anticorporate.

You as with your entire kind attempt to skip beyond man’s Spiritual/enlightened reality, you would prefer to push mankind over some utopian edge. Do things need fixing? Yes, but your kind lack both the maturity and spirituality to guide man forward, you lack the patients of history. The majority of the protesters don’t even believe in man’s history.

“I am an Arab Citizen from Egypt.” should be their first clue.

“ from the Arab Spring to the fall of Wall Street” the third.
“ from the Arab Spring from Liberation Square to Washington Square” the fourth.
“ to the fall of Wall Street” the fifth.
“ and market domination” the sixth.
“ and capitalist domination” the seventh.
” many things separate us – national borders, homeland insecurities, armies, corporations, and police.” the ninth.
” They have their laws, they have their debts” the tenth.

If that is the political result of “having a set of balls” then I would like my political leadership to be thoroughly “ball-less.” For that matter, how do you conservatives complain from one part of your mouth about “tyrannical” government, and yet out of the other side bemoan the lack of strong authoritarian leadership in the government–oh wait, I guess when it’s YOUR OWN tyranny, you find it perfectly reasonable to submit to it.

      No, no, no…

      1) The countries you cited are “at the top of the map?” Says who? By what measure? Certainly not by economic output, welfare of the populace, or even military dominance.

      2) Even if they WERE “at the top of the map” by any measure, you haven’t proven, and there’s no self-evident reason to presuppose, that their position would be the result of the “balls,” or lack thereof, of their leadership. Success in any of the measurable categories probably has a lot more to do with geopolitical factors and resource distribution than whether or not the countries leadership “has balls” or not.

Notice how in your thought experiment, in every possibility there is the underlying assumption that “Islam” is some secret worldwide conspiracy theory to conquer the Earth any more than Christianity or any other proselytizing religion. Islam may even have the most incidences of violent members (probably not true, because Christians are still numerically the largest faith)–that still doesn’t prove a rigid global hierarchy of military level coordination and efficiency. It’s a giant leap to conclude that Islam is somehow essentially different in how it is organized and conducted compared to most popular religions, at the very least, say Abrahamic religions for certain. Similar ritual practices, communal worship, even some shared holidays and saints. Similar moral edicts.

It’s more likely that Islam is a religion that, not like Christianity and every other belief system since the dawn of time, wants itself to be taken is true, and by implication that mutually exclusive accounts of the world are false. Even if there members are more proportionally violent (empirically unconfirmed), that doesn’t suggest a massive conspiracy
