Arby’s Responds to Annoyed Limbaugh Fans by Blocking Them on Twitter

Remember all the self-righteous chest thumping that went on after conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh made fun of the 30-year old Georgetown activist Sandra Fluke?

I’m sure you do. Politicians, celebrities, and major companies all got in on the “Censure Limbaugh” action. And why not? It was all the rage. Everyone was doing it.

And just like any good fad, somebody’s always late to the party. In this particular story, that “somebody” is Arby’s. Yep: the third-tier fast food chain announced yesterday (again, about a month late) that it would be removing advertisements from Limbaugh’s program.

Arbys Responds to Annoyed Limbaugh Fans by Blocking Them on TwitterOdd: “Limbaugh notes that Arby’s has never been a sponsor of his show,” Twitchy reports.

Unsurprisingly, as other advertisers boycotting Limbaugh quickly discovered, many customers have expressed irritation with Arby’s for publicly condemning the talk show host.

“Arby’s has alienated a large number of current and potential customers, who view this move as a strike against free speech,” Twitchy (conservative authoress Michelle Malkin’s start-up) reports.

In fact, many customers decided to voice their opinion via Arby’s Twitter feed:

Arbys Responds to Annoyed Limbaugh Fans by Blocking Them on Twitter
So how did the fast food chain respond to all the negative comments made by (likely) conservative customers? By blocking whoever sent them, of course.

Because, you know,  if you can’t see your customer’s complaints, it must not be happening, right?

Arbys Responds to Annoyed Limbaugh Fans by Blocking Them on TwitterWhat are you talking about? People love us!

“Arby’s has begun blocking conservatives who have tweeted complaints,” Twitchy reports.

Apparently, it’s not just a few here and there — it looks like a fair number of Twitter accounts have been blocked by the fast food chain:

Now we’re not corporate strategists or anything, but we’re pretty sure blocking customers is just about the worst PR move a company can make.

“Arby’s had one foot in it yesterday … we guess they decided they needed to step in it with the other foot to even things out,” Twitchy writes, “Arby’s, we’re thinkin’ you really screwed up.”

Arbys Responds to Annoyed Limbaugh Fans by Blocking Them on TwitterOf course, to be fair, blocking people on Twitter isn‘t the worst idea Arby’s has come up with…

They serve meat, which the left is totally against. I dumped proflowers like they dumped Rush. No more Big Montana’s for me. It‘s not like they’re the most attractive or clean places to dine anyway. They need to to vegan now and get PETA endorsements. The company would be out of business within a year. Hell, Rush could start his own roast beef sandwich chain with ‘Rushy Sauce’ , some ‘Freedom Fries’ and Two If By Tea to wash it down with. Not only would it be successful, it would be hysterical.

Sometimes I think Tea Party people simply will never understand capitalism. Arby‘s doesn’t care at all whether Rush Limbaugh or any other show is left, right or center. Rush simply went on for three days slandering some woman voicing an opinion that most people support, and Arby’s and about 60 other major advertisers decided he was toxic for their business. They didn’t want their brand associated with an entertainer who offended more of their customers than the ones he pleases. Simply as that.

A lot of people are saying they won‘t eat at Arby’s and that’s fine. Arby‘s made a business decision that they’d lose more business being associated with Rush than business they would lose by pulling their advertisements. It’s just business folks, capitalism. Arby’s could not care less about politics, they are just trying to make money. Seriously, it’s silly to take it personally.

I had a beef and cheddar today. Yum.

I wish I ate at Arby’s more than twice a year so my boycott would matter. Conservatives better start opening restaurants so I have a place to go. I’ve cut way back on Starbucks since they began pushing gay marriage in Washington. When I told them that when I have multiple coffee options I choose the one that doesn’t use my money to undermine my values. At least THEY responded although it basically said they have always been about inclusivity.

Why can’t companies understand that when they publically get involved with contriversial issues that their funding division of their customer base. Give to cancer, food shelves or even (shudder) the Salvation Army, but the reason you give in a public way is for publicity!

While traveling about 13 years ago, we stopped at an Arby’s in Cortez, Co. and got back on the road.
Too far out of town, we opened the roast beef sandwich’s and you could see a green color cast to the beef when opened to put some sauce on it. Yuk! Made me sick to my stomach and we ended up throwing it away.
Needless to say, I never bought anything else from Arby’s. The memory of green beef lingers.

Chutz, I like a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy. I‘ve heard the idea you’ve expressed: that some left wing organization has brought IBM, AOL… sixty other companies… and Arby’s to their knees with some boycott threat. I know it’s a scary thought that a couple of leftist can get on the phone and make international companies do their bidding. Sure. And I guess the also got all of Tiger Woods advertisers to drop him? And Beck’s?

I simply love the paranoid world of this website. What amazes me though is that people like you don’t understand that someone like Rush can offend so many people that companies withdraw their support. Rush became so toxic that companies no longer wanted their brand associated with him. No conspiracy theory required. I take it you don’t work in a marketing department.

Sorry, that’s capitalism and the free market.

Incidentally, I would feel the same way if they took this stance against someone I despise like Mahr. Free speech means people will be offended. Screw ‘em. I’m offended that they insist on shutting down those that offend them. I want MORE speech, not less. I love when the progressive left spouts off and shows how ridiculous they are. It helps our case.

Its interesting to see capitalism hating lefties like you engaging in capitalism. So do lefties all storm arbys now? Will they be in the weeds all day because of the outpouring of support? No and no is my “capitalist” guess. If you understood capitalism you would know that advertisers come and go depending on whether they make ….cover your ears kids…evil profit. The definition of a SLUT: (sl t). n. 1. a. A person, especially a woman, considered sexually promiscuous.

The person Rush spoke of was: unmarried, needed an extraordinary amount of money for birth control (I have been married for 20 years almost and wish I had that much lovin’!)…so it seems the label fits…..

Rush was making a point. Perhaps not the most artful way to do so to a diverse audience but the facts are still the facts…she is a slut.

They are slowly and surely becoming irrelevant. I’m not sure of Jimmy Johns political stance as a company, but they make a damn good sandwich and without all the fanfare and idiocy of a subway. Seriously people, why does it take you 5 minutes to decide what vegetables you want on your sandwich!?! Order and move through the line so I can get mine without having to stand in line for a half hour.

“”Rush simply went on for three days slandering some woman voicing an opinion that most people support, and Arby’s and about 60 other major advertisers decided he was toxic for their business.”"

      1) It was not slander, she is a slut if she is sleeping around.
      2) She was not some woman, she was a planted political activist.
      3) Most people do not support paying for the pill so this 30 year old slut can sleep around on our dime.
      4) There were not 60 advertisers on his show- so you are lying.

Slaptheleft, apparently reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit as judging from your response, you missed the entire point of the original article. Look at the title, then re-read, and you‘ll see the Blaze has chosen to call out Arby’s for censoring negative comments directed towards them by people angry about their decision. If the words are too hard for you, there‘s even a picture of a guy with his head in the sand that’s illustrating their point visually. All I did was point out the double standard from a website that purportedly only reports the “truth” where they failed to mention Mr. Limbaugh did the exact same thing that Arby’s did with social media. So, you’re only getting one side of the story as the Blaze feeds you some red meat, but I‘m sure you don’t care about that, do you? As you well know, all external stimuli is blocked when your head is up Rush‘s or Glenn’s rear end, so it’s easier to just keep eating what comes down the pipe.

C’mon, buddy, it‘s Glenn Beck talking about Rush Limbaugh and Arby’s, not rocket science. Try a little harder to keep up with the conversation.

While the operators of your local Arbys may be independant businessmen, if enough complaints to corporate ring out plainly, it will have an effect on corporate’s policy.

      Hi Kay,

Thank you for your response, although I do not understand it (I’m not that bright). All I was saying is that the First Amendment prevents Congress from making laws that abridge freedom of speech. Unless I missed something, Arby’s is not Congress, and Arby’s made no law.

Look, I am sympathetic toward most conservative viewpoints. When I see conservatives varying from “strict construction,” I get concerned that conservatives are playing the lib’s game. I made no reference to prayer in school or municipal nativity scenes. I guess I would say that Congress may not make a law preventing or enforcing prayer in school or municipal nativity scenes. To relate a social media decision by a restaurant chain with the First Amendment smacks of “penumbras.”

I’m not really part of your world. I observe it for entertainment and educational purposes (I enjoy watching Biblical prophecy play out), and occasionally, as in my initial post, comment on it. I refer to the Conservative battling the Liberals as “cutting off ears.”

All you conservatives are doing is prolonging the prophesied inevitable. I guess I’m kinda in favor of the Conservatives, as I have a nine year-old son, but the best you can do is to postpone the inevitable. I guess that is why I like to see Conservatives adhere to their espoused worldly principles, such as “strict construction.”

I agree with you that what Arby’s did has nothing to do with the First Amendment. What Arby’s did was decide to align themselves with economic terrorists. The people behind StopRush are the same people who tried to silence Glenn Beck. Their goal is to slience anyone with whom they disagree by harming anyone who supports them. Their tactics are not unlike those employed by the Nazi’s and are abhorrent in a free society, and should be opposed by anyone who loves freedom.

Here is a story about Beck’s comments on this from The Daily Caller:
