Archaeologists Unearth ‘Priestly’ Jesus-Era Gold Bell in Jerusalem

Bell that May Have Belonged to Priest in Jesus Time Discovered in IsraelArchaeologists in Jerusalem have uncovered a rare gold bell that is believed to date back to Jesus’ time. The tiny bell — which still works — may have fallen off of a priestly garment. The Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) has more:

“It’s not one bell that was on the coat. It was more than 70 bell[s] that [were] on the coat. The man was walking with that bell on his coat,” Israel Antiquities Authority head archaeologist Eli Shukronof told CBN News.

“Everyone heard [him] when he was coming. [The bells] make a small noise, you know, it’s not a big noise, just to give some respect to the man,” he said.

The bell was uncovered while archaeologists were excavating an ancient drainage channel. The area being examined begins at the pool of Siloam and spreads to an area near the Western Wall called Robinson’s Arch. CNB continues:

That’s where Jewish worshippers would have entered the Temple Mount in the time of Jesus. The bell has a tiny loop at the top. It would have been attached to the garment of a wealthy person.

Below, watch the CBN report for more about this astounding find:

While the bell could, indeed, be from anyone and not necessarily a religious leader, the Bible explicitly mentions gold bells in this context in Exodus 28:33. It is in this portion of the scriptures that the robe of Aaron, the high priest, is described as follows:

Upon its hem, you shall make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet, all around its hem; and bells of gold between them all around.

Experts cannot be sure that it belonged to a priest, but considering its find near a place of worship, it’s quite possible. At the least, the item likely dates back thousands of years and can help scientists better understand the times.

Archaeologists have been discovering artifacts and cities that are mentioned all over in the bible for DECADES now… but you never hear about it. Take for example the silver coins with Joseph’s face on it. First ever of its kind from that era. How many of you ever heard about that?

Archeology confirms many events, locations by using the Bible as a location Manual. Many still do not believe what is says though. Aside form the book, called the Bible, Josephus a Roman,Jewish historian writes of Jesus of Nazareth, who is called the Messiah. Can anyone claim Jesus was not a good, kind, truthful person? If He was not a liar, crazy, deluded, and from his record He certainly was none of those, then why do people NOT believe Him. He said I am the resurrection, and the Life. NO ONE comes to the fatehr but by ME. There is NO OTHER name under Heaven,by which we can be saved! He IS the WAY,THE TRUTH and THE LIFE. He is RISEN,from the dead,as attested to by THOUSANDS of witnesses. Believe HIm not,at your eternal peril!

I think this little golden bell traveled with the lost tribe of Israel to America. It was probably then found my Joseph Smith … and then passed down to several various Mormon leaders.

Finally, while Glenn Beck was in Israel, visiting … it probably fell out of his pocket when he was sneaking his flask out to take a nip of booze!

HOLLYWOOD: Great message! Everyone has sinned and fallen short of God’s glory by lying, stealing, murder, adultery, etc. and because of that no one can go to heaven. God is a holy God and thus no one can go to heaven or be saved that is why God sent Jesus. Jesus led the life of perfection that we could not and lived it for us. Then He willingly gave Himself up on the cross for our sins to cover our sins with His righteous blood and rose again on the third day. Because of that man can now be saved if they repent and make Jesus their Lord and Savior.

I must admit I agree with your comment, although Archeology is not an exact science,I know its’ methodology to be sound. Realize their job,is to dig around, in garbage most of the time, but OLD garbage. Finding something from any “ERA” needs other verification to make a strong case for its origin. That being said, there is nothing to PROVE it was off a Priests robe,as spoken of in Scripture. Interesting though!

Whenever I think of religious officials bedecked in precious metals and jewels, I always harken back to Thomas More’s seminal work “Utopia”.

“You might have seen the children who were grown big enough to despise their playthings, and who had thrown away their jewels, call to their mothers, push them gently, and cry out, ‘See that great fool, that wears pearls and gems as if he were yet a child!’ while their mothers very innocently replied, ‘Hold your peace! this, I believe, is one of the ambassadors’ fools.’”

The people of Utopia viewed such trinkets as child’s playthings and people so arraigned, in this case, an ambassador from a far off land intent on making a big impression on the Utopians, as fools and jesters.

I understand the high priest used bells around the hem of his robe. A rope was tied on one of his ankles when he went into the holy of holies. The priests outside the holy of holies would listen for the bells. If the high priest had any sin in him he was killed by the spirit of God. If so the bells would go silent and the priests outside the holy of holies would pull the high priest out.

I too have heard that the bells told those outside the Holy of Holies that the High Priest was alive.

Exodus 28:33 And beneath upon the hem of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, round about the hem thereof; and bells of gold between them round about:

All things about the Tabernacle are so rich in pictures of Christ. Perhaps my favorite is that the Tabernacle itself was very ordinary and plain on the outside (covered with badger skins) and very beautiful on the inside (gold, silver, fine linens,…).

“It didn’t penetrate the health center office and none of the staff or patients were there, which is great,” Holly Morgan, director of media relations and communications for Planned Parenthood in Dallas, told Star Local News. “It scorched the outside of the door and I believe there was a little scorching to the retail locations on either side of it.”

It wasn’t reported here because there is nothing to report. A door got scorched by a Molotov cocktail thrown by an unknown nutjob. I guess a brain dead liberal doesn’t know the difference between serious damage and a scorched door. There I reported it.

Could have belonged to someone from one of the religions pervasive in the region at the time. No way to tie it to the Bible or Jesus. Might have been a Zoroastrian magi.

You don’t waste much time reading the Bible do you?

Exodus 28:33 And beneath upon the hem of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, round about the hem thereof; and bells of gold between them round about:

Could have been worn by one of the pharisees, even one of THE pharisees who made sure Christ was crucified. It’s very interesting.

In other news, polygamist “prophet” Warren Jeffs declared in court today that having multiple wives (and child wives) is a “religious freedom.”

    Any opinions?

Should this radical strand of Mormonism be banned as well as Sharia?

MRBUTCHER Should any religious sect be allowed to break the laws of the country? Child rape is rape, no matter who does it, is it not? We can not ban a religion because we don’t like it, but we can prosecute crime.

The only reason for plural marriage being banned was based on morals, much like the ban against gay marriage, prostitution, adultery, etc…Now that it is starting to be legal in more states, polygamy will follow as the argument against it is being lost with the gay marriage argument. The government really has no place in saying yes or no in these matters. everyone needs to be taxed as individuals and their would be no reason for government to intrude.

Not banned. Those that break the laws of the Land should be prosecuted, and he is. What’s the problem here? Warren might consider Islam, since Muhammad married a 6 year old, Aisha. Being the gentleman he was though, he did not consumate the marraige til she was 9 though!

      Apples and oranges?

      I think not.

10,000 (confirmed) members of the FLDS church as compared to what % of the .8% (of all of americas population) of muslims who actually practice what they preach is a fair question.

it is a sign…we’re always so lost in our own hearts that we need “signs”…so this is a sign, okay, a priest lost a bell….his sewing was not really good .
People don’t want to take things at face value, it’s a bell, not a rocket ship from the past. now we’re quoting the bible on bells .. because someone found a little bell..it proves nothing. A pretty little gold bell…that’s all.
