Are Candidates ‘Called By God’ to Run For Office?

Are Candidates Called By God to Run For Office? There are some who giggle when they hear politicians exclaim that they’re being called by God to run for public office, but to others this spiritual endorsement of sorts is a very real and meaningful sentiment. Today, the Washington Post published an online “conversation” that recaps some opinion on this intriguing subject matter.

Deepak Chopra, though somewhat skeptical about some of the individuals who claim that God has endorsed their candidacy, believes that human beings are, indeed, able to connect with God. He writes:

Is there such a thing as having an intention or performing an action that is dictated by God?  It would surprise modern unreligious people to hear that the answer is yes, according to almost every tradition. But finding God‘s blessing isn’t a matter of hearing a voice in your head from on high. Nor is it a matter of the ego’s ambitions, which of course play a large part in the kind of political decisions in question here.

Yet, Atheist Herb Silverman takes a staunchly negative view:

Question: Does God endorse candidates?

Answer: No!

I wish even those who aren’t atheists would answer as I did, but apparently not. Any politician whose answer is different from mine has the potential of being downright dangerous. If a candidate says God endorses his or her run, I will run in the other direction and vote for only those who take personal responsibility for their own decisions.

Chicago Theological Seminary professor Susan Brooks Thislethwaite says that the Lord doesn’t pick favorites:

The answer to that question can be decisively answered: no, God does not pick favorites among political candidates and effectively “throw” the election toward the candidate who prays most fervently. In the same way, God would not work to defeat Huckabee, should the governor have chosen to run anyway, without divine endorsement. That’s not the way divine providence, in the Christian tradition, actually works.

You can read all of the perspectives for yourself. What do you think? Does God call politicians to run for public office?

You can count the one’s called by God on the fingers of one hand, and have leftovers. On the other hand, I do wish he would call a few to replace those who need it.

      Hi Gonzo!
When I post over at Huff-n-puff, I frequently tell the most obnoxious liberals the following.
“It’s not your fault that you are morally bankrupt, it’s that extra genome you brag about liberals having. It from the fallen angels. Just an accident of birth.”
I‘ve NEVER been rebuttaled when I post this to a liberal and I’ve dome it dozens of times.
Also, I once made a mistake and only posted a single word “minion” with no punctuation. The response I got floored me, name, rank, and area of authority, of a demon, no kidding. He/ it wrote, screen name / 4th tier/ climatologist , nothing else. Strange.

      @TEAPARTYCONSERVATISM

Except that there’s a little thing called the 14th Amendment which grants citizenship to all persons born or NATURALIZED (that means lawful immigrants) into the U.S [and subject to its jurisdiction, blah, blah--there's actually a lot more to the amendment and its a wonderful piece of law, but those parts aren't really relevant to this discussion...]

As long as Obama’s dad became a citizen, he’s good. Besides which, I don’t care–I thought the obligatory U.S. origin was stupid and discriminatory from the beginning. Citizenship should be enough–do you really honestly think someone who’s an immigrant AND who has a realistic chance of winning an election for PRESIDENT, is really just (besides which the secret service checks these people out and could kill them at any time) waiting to destroy America, because that’s 1) Ridiculous and 2) Emotionally draining to have to constantly live in fear of such outlandish doomsday scenarios. That just doesn’t sound like a very enjoyable way to live life.

      Rebuttaled isn’t a word–rebutted.

“They didn’t deny it so it must be true”–just like Glenn Beck hasn’t denied that he raped and murdered a girl in 1990. I’m not saying its true, but you can google it–there are some people who say he did. Now, I know an upstanding Mormon like Glenn would NEVER do such a thing, but if it‘s not true then WHY HASN’T HE COME ON HIS SHOW TO DENY IT EVER? I mean, he MUST know this rumor exists, because he sued a website which was simply trying to find an answer to these age-old rumors and put them to rest, so WHY hasn’t he rebutalled this vicious rumor, after all he IS innocent, isn’t he, so why wouldn’t he just come out and say so? WHAT ARE YOU HIDING FROM US GLENN?! TELL US THE TRUTH!

Of course there are some who giggle and scoff at the idea, and those are the people who don’t believe in G*D.

As one who DOES believe in G*D and prays constantly for righteous leaders to be appointed by Him, why shouldn’t believe that He hears my prayer (our prayers) for such people to come forward to lead America through these very evil times we’re in.

Yes. I said EVIL and I ain’t scared to say DEVIL neither!
Greed, corruption, a lust for power, or evil in the form of the devil himself possessing some of the higher-ups slinking around Washington ~ you dern right I pray for deliverence from them.
And if someone comes forth saying they feel lead of G*D to do so – I’m on their side.

And No. I don‘t want a theocrisy so don’t accuse me of it.
I want this country back on course and standing on the foundational principles of our Founding Fathers and the more the Left wants to shut me up, THE LOUDER I AIM TO SHOUT IT!!

Based upon what I read in the Bible, “G*D appoints kings”
He gives a nation up to their enemies when they turn away from Him.
This nation has been turning away from G*D and His laws for years, and now with the help of this president, the far left is seeing to it that we earase G*D from our society in ways that I find more appaulling everyday.

But if enough of us repent and call upon His name, He may answer and save us.

BTW, I’m tired of Progressives so-called myself. So there’s two things we can agree on. It’s enough to Unite us, as far as I’m concerned.

Some people may use this comment like icing on cake–God told me so I must be the right candidate. Other people have a deep seated belief in their hearts after much introspection that this is a correct pathway for them to take.
It‘s impossible to read another man’s heart, but their actions will do the speaking for them. The rest is up to the people who vote and they pray GOD will assist them to make the right decision.

The Candidates alone bear their own accountability before G*D.
And whether their hearts are good or evil, will be shown by the power of His hand.
Many were decieved by Obama. But G*D is allowing this man’s heart to be seen by the many who voted for him. You can be certain of that. They are turning from his lies in numbers that aren’t showing in the polls.

It may be that some are called to come forward, stand up and be heard, if nothing more than to inspire others to do the same. You’re right, not everyone who feels a call to do so will, or can be a winner, since there is only one winner for each seat.
But look at what has happened in the past couple of years. Early in 2008 America didn‘t know the name of Alaska’s Govenor. Now I don’t even have to mention her name, and I don‘t think it’s a far stretch to say that her boldness inspired people like Michelle Bauchman, Allen West, Herman Cain, and many others to rise up and do the same.
They’re out there. They can’t all be President, or Senators, but they need every bit of our support ~ G*D knows the G.O.P. will oppose them as hard as the left. And heaven help any who say they feel a call of G*D. The media among others will rip them apart.
If we’re Patriots, then lets defend them, and not join the choir of their lesser adversaries. Reps. or Dems.!!!

I think the decline in our “morale” is BECAUSE of Obama.

Also, I think it important for people to see the destinction between ethics and morals (not morale). Morals are not God given, and they are not objective. They are simply a reflection of what a society deems socially acceptable…what the norm is. If more than 50% of society think something is OK, it becomes moral by default. Ethics, on the other hand, are God given, and are not negotiable. Our nation no longer pays them any attention.

Well our nation’s morale decline was well on its way before Obama. And it’s still not reached its climax. I tend to agree with Ninja97 that he is a punishment. Now God didn’t put him in office to punish us. We are the ones responsible for that. We punished ourselves by standing idly by and allowing evil to run ramped and unchecked. You can see the state of a people by its leader when they respect (fear) god and live righteously they tend to vote for righteous/good leaders and vise versa. Too many people in this country are becoming complaint with lives of mediocrity. We are all children of God and he intended for us to live our lives to the fullest. He’s only asked for our best efforts in all things. I’ve never come across a teaching from Him that said “be lazy, don’t try, put it off tell tomorrow, or better yet don’t do it at all some one else will do it for you”.

I was making a joke, based on the misspelling of the original poster, that the morale of the country has suffered as a result of Obama, and was not the reason he was elected. For those of you who don’t understand, morale is defined by Wikipedia as “an intangible term used to describe the capacity of people to maintain belief in an institution or a goal, or even in oneself and others.”

Obviously Obama was not elected because morale is low in this country. I don’t know how to say this any more clearly, so if anyone else wants to jump in and help me out I would appreciate it.

This is where the so called “separation of church and state” clause is most prevalent. God calls one to serve, the lust for power and money causes one to run. If God called on these people we would still have Washington, Adams, Hamilton et al. not Dodd, Franks, Pelosi, Reid et al.

      Not usurper Obama!

His father precluded his being a “natural born citizen” meaning born on U.S. soil of U.S. citizen parents; he is further ineligible by dual citizenship for being born a British citizen pursuant to the British Nationality Act of 1948, as his father was a British citizen of colonial Kenya.[1]

The Art 2, Sec 1, exemption from being a NBC, “or a citizen of the United States …” wasn’t needed if NBC means just a citizen!

Each authoritative definition of a NBC stipulates citizen parents (plural). First Congress, Ses II, Chp 3, Sec I, 104, 1790: “the children of citizens.” Bingham, House floor, 1866: “of parents not owing allegiance.” Supreme Court, Minor v. Happersett, 1874: “of parents who were its citizens.” Senate Res 511, 2008: “born to American citizens.”

Congress is hiding behind the birth certificate controversy rather than act and jeopardize reelection. Their deceptive dereliction of duty was deftly codified by rhetorically requesting guidance from the CRS on just the birth certificate issue. The expected reply was the infamous Maskell memorandum.[2]

Demand congress immediately remove Obama in accordance with their oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Proverbs 8:15, 16 of the Bible, the inspired Word of God, says that governments should use wisdom to rule and to make laws that are just. Proverbs 17:7 says rulers also should not lie. Proverbs 20:26 says wise rulers always try to punish the wicked. Proverbs 28:2-4 and 29:4 urges rulers to maintain order justly, to follow God’s moral code and to avoid oppressing the poor.

This kind of wipes out voting for 100% of democrats, and 75% or Republicans. I would also claim that the democrat’s welfare system has done more to oppress the poor than help the poor.

We‘ve got a word for people who hear voices that talk to them and tell them they’re chosen. It has nothing to do with religion.

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.” Romans 13:1
God is always the One in control and Who decides who the rulers are and when – everything. Sometimes it’s to bring about blessings, other times to bring judgement — whatever His plans and purposes are at the time. He definitely chose the kings that ruled – as David, Saul, Solomon, etc. Sometimes nations need to be disciplined (if not destroyed) and He brings about a person to bring certain judgements & whatever – hopefully to wake up people so He can bless them again. In my opinion, that’s why Obama was allowed and put in. As Christians we are to obey the laws of the land, unless they‘re against God’s commandments. I’m sure some think they are “called” and they might be – but the problem is they’re wrong many times.

It’s because we have become so ignorant and take words at face vale and very litteral….Of course God did not come down to them and say hey, you should run, and shake their hand then go back up the stairway to heaven, and any person with a spiritual sense knows what they mean…..

So who are the real idiots, who can’t think past the words that hit them in the face…..real intelligent I tell you…..And these are suposed to be the poetic/artistic people (the left) who understand self expression, and can read beyond the words????? Please…

Which god is calling them to run for political office?
There are many god’s and many lords. What god are we talking about?
Even Satan is having the title of god. “God” is a title, it is not a name.

Ohhh and i guess to answer the question of the topic….No I don’t believe God calls on people to “run for office”….But I think God calls on people to play a role in doing something good for humanity….whether it is to get out and help that guy that is broke down on the side of the road….run for office or anything in between….I tend to be leery of the politicians that use that line though…..

      Good answer!

No, people who run are not called by God. Some are, for sure.

I do believe, as in Israel, some are annointed by God to lead as king (or President, in our case). Again, as in Israel, when that man is wicked, the nation falters, and again, one must only look at the state of America to know whether those with the most power are wicked.

God called many people to lead in the Old testament.
God calls many people to their careers. The obvious call is for the priests, pastors, nuns. Many spiritual people think their work was a calling. Often times you hear soldiers claim they were called…..Glenn Beck believes the Lord has a purpose for him, right now (= he feels called). I DO believe God can do anything.
Does he endorse?? = I’m sure not any Libs!!!

      Interesting posts above….

God calls us to follow Jesus Christ, The Messiah. Leviticus tells us we are created to be a Priest or King, with Kings being the prominent as Kings make the Church for the Preist to lead. (Unfortunately we have been taught the Preist is the more prominent but without Kings and all Preists there would be no Church)

God does not care what career you choose whether it be a Dr., farmer, banker, comedian, or politician. God concerns on how you live your life with whatever career you choose. God concerns that you follow the commandments and believe in Jesus.

Any politician saying “God told me to run for President” is only looking for the religious vote and is lying. Again, God does not care what profession you choose but how you perform such profession.

God does not judge us thru leaders. He does not judge the wicked and the righteous together. Believing a leader is put in place as judgement is believing in Collectivism, like BO believes and like Jews believe. We are responsible for our actions. If we elect a wicked person then we will see wicked actions from such leader. God allows us to choose and gives us the path to righteousness thru Christ. God allows wicked leaders to be in place as vengeance is the Lord’s…
