Are Democrats Buying Senior Votes for $250?

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats are making a pre-election pitch to give Social Security recipients a one-time payment of $250, part of a larger effort to convince senior voters that their party, and not Republicans, will best look out for the 58 million people who get the government retirement and disability benefits.

The $250 check is meant to make up for a second year without a cost-of-living increase due to low inflation.

President Barack Obama has urged Congress to approve the $250 payment. House and Senate Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid say they will bring up the legislation when lawmakers return for the lame-duck session in November. In the meantime, Democrats are using the proposal to augment their campaign pitch that Republicans would undermine Social Security.

“Instead of helping seniors,” Pelosi’s office said, “Republicans, backed by their allies on Wall Street, are threatening to privatize and cut Social Security, just as they tried to do under President Bush.”

Added Reid, “The only thing standing in the way of America’s seniors receiving this critical support are Senate Republicans.”

Actually, 12 Democrats and one independent who aligns himself with Democrats joined 37 Republicans in blocking the $250 bonus when Senate voted on the issue last March. Two of the Senate Democrats who voted against it then, Michael Bennet of Colorado and Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, are engaged in tough campaign battles to keep their seats.

Democratic leaders in the House never brought the issue up for a vote. Obama first asked Congress for the $250 payment last February.

“It’s clearly a last-ditch election-year Hail Mary,” said Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio. If supplementing the incomes of seniors was really a priority, he said, Democrats would have acted on it before they adjourned for the campaign.

Democrats may have the votes in the House to push through the measure, although still unanswered is how they plan to cover the estimated $13 billion to $14 billion cost of giving $250 to each of more than 50 million Social Security beneficiaries. Obama hasn’t offered any suggestions and the Senate measure last March was rejected 47-50 primarily because it would have stacked the cost on top of the nearly $12 trillion federal debt.

Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., offered a counterproposal then that would have paid for the bonus with unspent money from the $814 billion stimulus package, but it was rejected by an even wider 38-59 margin. Proponents in both cases needed 60 votes.

Helping seniors “has broad-based support within the Senate body, but I think it is responsible to say that to do this, we should pay for it,” Burr said at the time. “To do this, we should not print more money, borrow that money just to provide a $250 check.”

Colorado’s Bennet was one of nine Democrats to support the Burr approach. His office said he had spoken to seniors across his state who depend on the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, and “he supports efforts to provide seniors with a one-time increase as long as it is paid for.”

Neither Pelosi nor Reid have given any specifics on how, or if, the bill would be paid for. Pelosi’s office said it would be “fiscally responsible.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., characterized the choice between paying $13 billion to help seniors and $70 billion a year over 10 years to extend the George W. Bush tax cuts for those with annual incomes of more than $250,000.

“Senior citizens are hurting,” he said, and helping them out “is a good argument for Democrats and a good argument for Republicans.” Sanders acknowledged that Republican support is key, and won’t be easy.

“Will it be paid for?” asked Don Stewart, press spokesman for Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. “That question matters.”

$250 AND OBAMACARE TOO? How can we refuse an offer like that from a President who has finally presented a plan to save Social Security and Medicare?

Our President has a courageous plan to save both Social Security and Medicare – read on!

The Social Security Trust Fund is almost bankrupt and the Medicare trust fund is bankrupt. The problem has been apparent for years but until now no one has advanced a plan to save these popular programs.

At last, our President has the courage to propose a solution! It is so simple that one wonders why no one thought of it before. The solution?

Enact a “Health Care Reform Bill” the severely rations health care to the elderly. This will save the Medicare Trust Fund and allow it to be used to reward the Presidents political cronies and provide health care for “deserving Illegal Aliens.”
Deprived of medical care, the lifespan of the elderly will be reduced, depleting the number of recipients of the Social Security Trust Fund, saving that popular program.

Both problems solved! Why did it take so long to find such a simple solution?

Of course, the Congress and the President are exempted from the solution so they can perpetuate the problem.

You are so right! Actually, it is a trifecta–social security, medicare and Obamacare. And then there is the added fact that the earth will be much better off with only 500 million persons living on it.
Because I just retired, I will tell you that the last $250. they sent me, I gave to charity–because we couldn’t afford that one either!! And believe me, I hear other Seniors complain and moan about not getting what they think they deserve–but we all make choices through life–about how much money we will save for retirement, how we will blow through our money while we are making it.
I really don’t think this choice is about saddling my grandchildren and great grandchildren with all this debt. If we continue on as we are going, we don’t have that long!!!!!
If we don’t make changes to the retirement age, and start means testing for social security and disability eligibility – then everybody who is paying into the system now will have nothing when they get to retirement age–and that is nothing more or less than theft!!!!

You all are missing the point! This is the second time they want to do this. The first time they lost $600,000,000 to dead people, and prisoners who are not eligable. A good chunck of the money has not yet been recovered. (I wonder where that money went? Who want’s to bet that some of those same dead people will vote this year for a Democrap.)

Of course this is vote-buying, just like promising tax cuts to the rich was vote buying. Everything special monetary dispensation a politician makes for a special interest (elderly, labor unions, wealthy, people working on Wall Street, etc.) is an example of vote buying. Some happen in smoke filled rooms like Dick Cheney‘s energy task force’s policies, while others are broadcast in the light of day like this $250 COLA catch-up payment. This is why we need more fiscal responsibility, more accurate budget accounting and an electorate that actually knows and holds politicians to the numbers. I am more upset about the voters who are so ignorant about the numbers than about the politicians, since a smarter electorate wouldn’t tolerate this kind of nonsense. Instead, we have people who think about politics the way they think about their favorite sports teams: if the other side does anything, whether a nice play or a dirty one, they are to be booed, while our team is to be supported no matter how dirty or terribly they have performed. Such thinking destroys the integrity of our democracy. Now, I’ll step aside and listen to the conservatives ignorantly or wishfully pretend that only Democrats are dishonest.

The “$250 gift” will be the gift that keeps on giving – your money to them – if you vote dem.

As Harry Reid told supporters in a speech around 4 months ago, “Don’t worry, SINGLE PAYER health care will be a reality – it is just a matter of when, not if.” –You see, he was in on Obama’s back-room plan all along–

As you are reading this, the insurance companies are systematically being squeezed out of the medical insurance field, just as the administration COVERTLY planned, when Obamacare was passed.

So, as soon as THOSE EVIL insurance companies are out of the way, supplemental Medicare insurance will be deducted right out of Social Security monthly payments at whatever rate GOVERNMENT INSURANCE CO desires (as much as they can get away with without causing riots in the street.)

So there you have it — the beans have been spilled, Progressives.

Never underestimate the avarice of the elderly. Not all of them mind you, but a lot of them will and have voted many times to throw their children and grandchildren under the bus for “benefits we earned!”. Meaning of course, money that was stolen, which accrued a 0.0% interest rate and which was repaid in full usually within three years of retirement. An awful lot of old folks talk a big game about independence and freedom, but if you DARE to whisper that we should eliminate the socialist programs Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security they scamper quickly behind the barracades of the socialists and pull out their guns against *us*.

Just look at some of the tea parties, many of the retirement age folks were there with signs proclaiming “Don’t touch my medicare!” Yet, Medicare is nothing but socialized medicine slipped quietly into the mainstream in the early 1960′s. You know, back in the days when pretty much anybody could afford to go to the hospital or doctor’s office and pay cash and not break the bank.

I hate to sound so cynical, but since the 1980‘s I’ve watched seniors line up dutifully and in droves every time somebody dared to even hint that some of the senior perks should be looked at.

The few that adhere to liberty, I salute you, and wish there were more of you. Unfortunately, most seniors can be counted on to predictably balk at even the suggestion that they shouldn’t be on the government dole for the remainder of their years. This $250 payoff WILL in fact “help” many of them make up their minds in the voting booths. Count on it.

Well in fact the govt took money from the seniors every pay check for a long time, we didn’t have any choice. The amount you get back is not so big, in fact for most not enough to get by on. Yeah they get upset. Still the 250 is stupid, it won’t effect my vote.
Bashing seniors won’t help. How about praying for them?

      @ CHETT

I wasn’t bashing “all” seniors, just those that huddle behind the socialist barricades the moment anybody suggests that, after they’ve had their money repaid, that they should continue to live on the government dole. I certainly don’t begrudge anybody the money that they had stolen being returned. But the return happens pretty damned quickly, and after that, its a ponzi scheme that everybody pretends not to see as they tell us of how “I earned it!” long after the payback is over.

You DID have a choice of course, you could have voted many times over to repeal Medicare, Medicaid, SS and other socialist entitlement programs when you were in your 20′s, 30′s, 40′s, 50′s, 60′s even now. Kind of like GenX and younger are balking at the new Nazicare law and demanding loudly that it be repealed, that‘s what y’all could have done in regards to the horrors known as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. The fact is though, those “entitlements” quickly became the so called third rail of politics, precisely because most in your generation (and to be fair, prior) seethed absolute venom at anybody who dared to suggest getting rid of these programs. Those that took up intellectual arms against these programs are to be recognized as great Americans, for having integrity in the face of complacency.

Not all seniors are in this boat, as I’ve already mentioned. Some had and still have integrity. But I will not for even one nanosecond believe that this $250 won’t buy an awful lot of senior votes. The history of senior voting is pretty clear, again, the “third rail” and how untouchable it is. These checks *will* work for an awful lot of the elderly I’m afraid.

This is a re-post until after the election: Please do the same
I received this in an email and thought it was worth posting as a reminder of what and when things happened…..
    Remember January 3, 2007

…… I don‘t understand WHY the people running for office don’t say this in their ads!!!

The day the democrats took over was not January 22nd 2009 it was actually January 3, 2007 the day the Democrats took over the House of Representatives and the Senate, the start of the 110th Congress.

The Democratic Party controlled a majority in both chambers for the first time since the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995.

For those who are listening to the liberals propagating the fallacy that everything is “Bush’s Fault”, think about this:

January 3, 2007 was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress:
    At the time:

The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77

The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%

    The Unemployment rate was 4.6%

George Bush’s Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB CREATION!

    Remember the day.

January 3, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over as Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over as Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.

The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy?

    BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!

Thank Congress for taking us from 13,000 DOW, 3.5 GDP and 4.6% Unemployment to this CRISIS by dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac fiasco’s!

(BTW: Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie – starting in 2001, because it was financially risky for the U.S. economy, but no one was listening).

And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac? OBAMA.

And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie??? OBAMA and the Democratic Congress.

So when someone tries to blame Bush…
REMEMBER JANUARY 3, 2007…. THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!”

Bush may have been in the car, but the Democrats were in charge of the gas pedal and steering wheel they were driving. Set the record straight on Bush!

So, as you listen to all the commercials and media from the Democrats who are now distancing themselves from their voting record and their party, remember how they didn‘t listen to you when you said you didn’t want all the bailouts, you didn’t want the health care bill, you didn’t want cap and trade, you didn‘t want them to continue spending money we don’t have.

I’m not forgetting their complicity in getting us into this mess, and I’ll be marking my vote accordingly!

I am a senior – depend on my SS check every month. I was informed in June, that my Medicare Supplement policy would no longer be available (Obamacare) so this next year I will have to pay deductibles, co-pays, etc and a higher premium. Most seniors will also find out that the premium for Medicare (comes out of your SS check each month) has increased from $96 to $116 per month. So, the claim that the cost of living hasn’t gone up is ludicrous. A $250 check does little to offset the real cost of living. Its like giving your kid a quarter when everything costs a $1. Soooooo – do you think I will change my vote just because they say I “might” get a check. HE!! NO! As a matter of fact, I have decided to take advantage of early voting TODAY!

That right my friends. You are so correct. Things that are infltionary are indexed so they have little effect on COLA. But they sure count those washers, dryers and TV’s. The things that seem to hold steady or go down in cost. Indexing? The cost has to go up 100% before it reflects a 1% effect on COLA. Any one that buys groceries knows the prices are up 20% just this year alone. Manufacturers are reducing the contents pf packages and raising the price. Many are getting very deceptive in packaging. Northern tissue reduced the size of the sheets and then increased the diameter of the roller, less product and higher cost.

It will be tooted as “good for retirement, folks – good – stable – or wait, —the only way we can save the system! Yeah, that’s right.. (I can hear Gibbs right now, “there was no other choice”)

Seniors aren’t stupid. Many have paid into SSI for their entire adult lives, hoping to get back a little something. BUT, many have also been frugal enough to also set aside some savings over the years to get them through – hoping to benefit from interest rates and a return on a few investments. Well, that has all been turned upside down so, yes, many seniors are worried that their futures are looking a LOT different than they had planned and saved for. No one could have planned for this sorry state of affairs. Can seniors be bought for $250???? I don’t think so. Wrong group to play your silly games with. Most seniors have plenty of integrity and would say, “I’d rather go hungry than take your stupid bribe money”. Also, Obamacare is weighing heavily on seniors and they are still holding out for repeal so it will take quite a lot more than $250 for them to lose their focus in November!!!!

i am from a working Massachusett democrat background (i am not a democrat but aging parents are) they knew for the 2nd year in a row they will not get a cola in the ssi. They are all blaming Obama. The tea party movement missed the seniors in Massachusetts because they are life long democrats, but they are now ready to change because of the ssi cola

Obama never got the message: Never, ever underestimate the wisdom of seniors. I know without a doubt that the majority of seniors will see right through this charade and vote to oust these clowns now!! I’m nowhere near being a senior, but I find this highly insulting!

Once again, only half the truth is being told. The POR team (Pelosi, Obama, Reid) and their acolytes rail about the “obstructionist” Republicans when with their super majority, they can pass whatever they wish as they have proven time and again over the past six years. The freebie given to the top 2% will equal so many billions, but keeping the below $250,000 threshold will cost even more. The Dems tout their “pay-go” solution, but they have not passed one bill without declaring it an emergency to stop the country from going over the cliff. A good question to ask the “fiscally” concerned Dems: Did you forego your 5% pay raise this year and how about next year? What about all the unionized govt employees, did they forego their raises? Once again a case of doing the research from original sources before drawing a conclusion.

There is NO question that this is a “Pay for your vote” campaign. It’s pretty smart as well. I would do the same if I were in the Dems position right now – That position is “ankles behind ears”

Wait, wait – the seniors already got a $250 check this year – is this another payment on top of that? But I know that they already got one this year! http://wp.me/pYLB7-gA

Wait – you mean, this is NOT happening – they’re just talking about it…and they think it will help them in the election? Reid and Pelosi say they’ll vote on it later? After they’re fired? Great.

My dad is a union dem from way back and just yesterday was complaining about no COLA again – I told him why there was no COLA (of course, he didn’t know the facts because all he reads are VFW and UAW publications – and AARP) and he lit into me about how it‘s Nixon’s fault that all the jobs are shipped overseas. Whaaa? So – I said I love you dad, and changed the subject. *hangs head* My dad is a typical lib. Presented with unpleasant facts, he too redirects to irrelevant 35 year old rhetoric.

My friend in Houston drove past a group of young democrats out picketing with signs that read “Impeach Obama.” That’s hopeful, right?

Has anyone bothered to figure out this amounts to about $4.80 per week, or 20.81 per month? If any Democrat thinks that this will me endear them to me, they are nuts! As others have said, my vote is not for sale. The dems cut 500 billion dollars from medicare and if you do the math that is about $1300 per senior citizen.
