Are Exploding Chinese Watermelons Another Warning Sign?

The Exploding Watermelons!  It sounds more like a name for an indy rock band than a problem in the produce fields of China. But it is not a band. Apparently watermelons are exploding all over China.

Are Exploding Chinese Watermelons Another Warning Sign?

Thanks to overzealous spraying of something called a “growth promoter,” Chinese watermelons are literally bursting. The BBC coverage claims:

An investigation by state media found farms in Jiangsu province were losing acres of fruit because of the problem.

ACRES OF FRUIT? Imagine the coverage that would be generated by the news media in America if acres of farmland were decimated by bursting melons.

Perhaps there is a fear that amateur MythBusters would attempt to recreate the phenomenon:

h/t to geek.com for the video of the electrified melon explosions above

Australia’s Nine network covered the watermelon story as well and pointed out the following:

China is battling rampant misuse of pesticides, fertilizers and food additives, like dyes and sweeteners, meant to make food more attractive and boost sales.

“Rampant misuse.” Those words should trigger a serious response in American consumers. After all, China is responsible for many large product recalls and problems:

  • Shipping tens of millions of lead paint covered toys
  • Baby bibs tainted with lead
  • Melamine tainted dog food killed untold numbers of dogs
  • Powdered milk was also found to have melamine in it
  • Candy from China was discovered to contain melamine as well
  • Tainted drywall from China is causing problems all across America

While China’s exports flood this country and are often cheaper on the store shelves, they may carry serious hidden costs that pop up later. Could this be a sign?

We may not get watermelons from them, but we get most of our apple juice and apple sauce from them. I buy musselman’s applesauce because it is American grown. Apple juice is harder to find and VERY expensive. I have been giving it to my kids up until now, but I may just have to suck up the expense and give them a smaller amount each morning. I may even try to wean them to orange juice.

Not related to this topic, but I was furious when I heard Glenn on TV yesterday at the end of the program, compare the lady who had the wonderful attitude after she was burned over most her body after a plane crash and the lady from Iran who had the acid thrown in her face by a boyfriend leaving her majorly disfigured. The Iranian lady was upset about Iran‘s hold on the boyfriend’s punishment to pour acid in his eyes. She believes an eye for an eye but Glenn reminded people to have courage, to not take revenge. He was definetely making a comparison of the different attitude of each lady. I’m sorry Glenn, there is NO comparison when you are victimized by another person who pours acid in your face to someone who is burned from a plane crash and who’s not disfigured nearly as much as the Iranian lady. I was shocked

Did not hear the comment Claire, but tend to agree that it should be pointed out. The Muslim faith in the Middle East is EXTREMELY concerning. They treat women worse than their goats. You never hear the feminists in America who hammered Justice Thomas for something fairly minor take the Muslims to task for honor killings or genital mutilation to name only a couple! It just doesn’t fit into their agenda. Sad for the women being born into this lifestyle.

You are so right. It really irritated me too. They don’t hesitate to carry out heinous punishments against women over there, but look aside when men horribly abuse, kill and maim women. Pouring acid on people shouldn’t be a punishment at all, but who the heck can blame her? I’m disappointed in Glenn that he would further victimize her.

Disappointed that Trump dropped out. He had the guts to say, stop giving these jobs to the Chinese. The Chinese have a dismal record of health endangerment with their products and don’t care as long as it meets minimum requirements. These throat-cutters will do anything to get our jobs and keep them. Maybe Trump will get a cabinet position. It‘s a shame they can’t find anyone in Washington with the fortitude to call the Chinese on the carpet like Trump does.

What I don’t understand is with the never ending toxic food scandals in China why do we continue to increase food imports from there? And the real shocker is only a small percentage of it can be inspected properly just over 1%! On top of that Chinese food imports continue to increase year on year to our shelves and flood our markets. Is it any wonder kids are developing strange allergies and other strange illnesses? We are being slowly poisoned and paying for it at the same time!
