Are Feds Fanning Racial Flames in an Affluent, White Calif. County?

Marin County, the affluent Bay Area community outside of San Francisco, is too white, says the Feds. According to data culled from the recent census, Marin County contains seven of the 10 whitest cities in the Bay Area. And to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), that’s a problem.

Are Feds Fanning Racial Flames in an Affluent, White Calif. County?

According to the Bay Citizen:

The draft report, released Wednesday, came in response to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s determination that Marin had “failed to comply” with the 1964 Civil Rights Act and two other anti-discrimination statutes.

Marin’s Community Development Agency recommended amending zoning regulations to ease the construction of new apartments, passing new laws requiring new developments to offer housing at below-market rates, and stepping up programs to combat discrimination by landlords and realtors.

Chuck Hauptman, HUD’s Regional Director for Fair Housing, said officials were reviewing the plan “to see if it is acceptable as far as content goes.”

According to this video report from KPIX, Marin County officials are scrambling to make more of an effort to reach out to minorities:

But is there really a race-related problem in Marin County?

Barbara Westerhoff, the Marin County resident you see below, seems surprised by these pronouncements implying that her community is racially insensitive. Westerhoff  lives in an affordable housing complex and she says, “We’ve never ever had a problem. I walk down the streets, people say good morning to me. I feel so fortunate.”

Are Feds Fanning Racial Flames in an Affluent, White Calif. County?

Meanwhile, another Marin County resident, Nancy Reed, says that something is wrong with the racial make-up of Marin County. “I pick up my grand son, I take him to school. I see maybe four Latino children there, and one African American–two maybe…that’s–something’s wrong…why they’re [the county officials] not doing more? Now they have to be forced to do more.”

Marin County has now promised “to do more” as Reed said.

There was a time when people were concerned about the communities well being and standard of living, not simply their own. Private ownership is one thing. Personal priorities and self interest over the common good and fundamental concept of liberty in terms of open and equal access is another.

JROOK – Yes there was a time, it was the USSR and it ended with the Cold War. Please explain to me how affluent people purchasing homes in an expensive area has anything to do with the concept of liberty. Anyone can buy a home there if they can afford the home, there is equal access for all. This country promises a right to pursue happiness, but the country is not responsible for your happiness. It used to be people worked hard for what they wanted, now we have a class of people (of all colors and ethnicities) that want handouts so they can sit on their lazy butts and enjoy the freebies. Maybe the Feds should make Oprah and Cosby move there to since they can afford the homes, that way we can avoid gov’t subsidies. Would that be fair to Oprah or Cosby? No – and it isn‘t fair to make tax payers pay for minorities to live in an area they can’t afford.

That was when people shared in a common purpose and were of like mind to persue life, liberty and the joys of property ownership. When the individual opportunities to prosper exist the community flourishes. Everyone wants to succeed. When the nanny state steps in to level the inequalities of a community, prospertity deminishes. Everyone looks for the next gov’t handout.

Explain government project housing to me. Why is it when people are given a free apartment in a new building complete with parks, courts and facilities it looks like a war zone within a year with urine, feces, glass & crack pipes in the halls? Is that not a liberal program aimed at fighting economic discrimination? How did that work out for you liberals? Did you once again ignore conservative logic that if you did not work for it you do not respect it? Has it made you people reconsider that merit, work ethic and ability are essential or have you doubled down and tried to create equal outcomes without anything of substance to sustain it?

The nice neighborhoods you see are a reflection of the skills, education and ability of the respective residents. They are not communities of discrimination, they are communities of individuals with similar educational backgrounds, skills, talents and abilities. People with college degrees, a unique skill set or those who are entrepreneurs are the ones living in these nice neighborhoods you claim are discriminatory. These people intentionally move out to these remote suburbs to escape the cities and urban centers and insane liberal policies. They want nothing to do with the crime, the ever increasing taxes or the large collection of poorly educated groups that drag down the standard of living. They want their children to attend schools free from crime, gangs and the lowest common denominator which lowers the standard of their children’s education. Certain groups in Los Angeles are trying to eliminate programs for gifted children and honors classes is a perfect example of certain groups trying to tear down those better off instead of taking responsibility and improving themselves. This is why more successful people leave (wealth-flight), they do not want their children dragged down so liberals like you can feel good with the “perception of equal results”.

You liberals and your race based identity politics are the reason you will never see solidarity in this country. You will have to force it on to the populace via confiscation of their labor which will only create more tension and animosity. Instead of requiring everyone to produce the same quality of work, to adhere to the same standards of conduct, to expect everyone to make responsible decisions for their lives and not burden their neighbors- you have created two classes of people, those who earn what they have and those who demand the government take from others by force or threat of confiscation. How long till those footing the bill aggregate together and refuse to pay a single penny more?

Well certainly Reagan by cutting taxes and using debt to finance California and the US has certainly contributed to the current economic woes. Debt by definition is indicative of prior shortfalls in tax revenues. So Regan, Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. presiding over 80% of the cumulative national debt, merely kicked the can down the road. Expecting someone else to pay the bill later on. That’s not conservatism or fiscal responsibility, it is in fact the exact opposite. Time for the baby boomers to pay the bill for the deficit spending of the past 30 years through tax surcharges, not through drastic service cuts or economic stagnation for their children and grandchildren.

JROOK, Your not being totally honest by leaving out a president or two. Granted Bush Jr. had the greatest increase ( 3 trillion ) per term, his second, but Obama is projected to be over 6 trillion dollars for his term. Clinton’s second term was relatively very low but look at who had control of the spending in the congress. I‘m not schilling for the rebub’s, it is both parties that are the irresponsible spender’s.
You say “Debt by definition is indicative of prior shortfalls in tax revenues.” Your not being totally honest again. Do you think the fed’s can continue to spend and grow, spend and grow, on and on and the problem is not with the fed‘s operating outside their enumerated power but that we just aren’t keeping up with their spending by being taxed more? The IRS has become a political tool for the connected that have loop holes written in for them by their payed for politician despite the regime of the day. Therefore the wealthy, whom already pay the bulk of the taxes, will find ways to dodge any tax increase. Tax increases will be passed on to the “regular” folk through increases in cost of goods.
Have everybody pay taxes through a consumption tax. The more you spend the more you pay. No loop holes, no breaks. Trim the fed down to what it is supposed to be according to the enumerated powers. The people of the states can determine what social programs they want to pay for. Having this much power in a centralized federal government can’t help but have waste and corruption. It is unavoidable.
I agree with you on people being “concerned about the communities well being and standard of living,” That can better be achieved when your money for such causes is kept locally where accountability and responsibility is a lot more personel and closer.

You can see the coralation of money spent versus our standing in the world on test scores. The Dept. of Ed is doing a bang up job! Our Dept. of Energy, which by the way produces no energy, has got our energy needs under control. Well that is certainly one way to look at it. On the other hand economic discrimination is the rule in the US as represented by real estate based school funding which has been found unconstitutional by virtually every state supreme court. There are countless examples where the government has used its influence and power to provide free and open access to all citizens. How about we get back to everyone being a good citizen in the sense of supporting and investing in the community like the corporations and wealthy used to do. You wanna open and join a private club then I’m all for it. You create exclusive towns and neighborhoods through zoning and other local planning efforts to discriminate against any class of Americans…. now that my friend is an assault on liberty.

You seem to toss this phrase around a lot, “economic discrimination” as if the economics really have the power to choose, it does not,,,, only humans can discriminate (CHOOSE). If a person is economically disavantaged in the locality and or proffession they CHOSE to be in,,,, CHOOSE another,,,, MOVE,,,, Move to where the jobs are, at the wages you feel comfortable with, in a locality of persons you are confortable with, with the taxes, and services you are comfortable with. NO ONE,,, forces any one, to perform a given type of labor, or service, or to live in a given location. This is NOT Cuba, Russia, or China,,, this is America, where we have the freedom to choose where we live, what we do for raising income, where we go get medical services, where we bring our children up in school,,, FREEDOM,,, does that word scare you? FREEDOM TO CHOOSE?

Emily, the only discrimination that is practiced in the US is economic discrimination. Which is why school funding has to be based on something other than real estate taxes and townships should be restricted in regards to zoning laws which limit the ability for average Americans to live there. Now the fact that economic discrimination seems to hit minorities harder than white people is certainly something you should consider focusing on.

Amazing how racism is viewed as a one-way street by the liberals. It‘s not ok to seperate issues by the color of someones’s skin, no matter who is doing it. I thought Obama was the first “post racial” President? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=619wI12Ky20

Now the government wants to tell you where you can live. They are pushing the envelope and sooner or later, hopefully sooner, there will be a backlash. What Marin Co. should do is welcome all those illegal aliens San Francisco welcomes and move them to Marin Co. Nancy Pelosi should lead the way and open her big house up to all the illegals so they have all the rooms they want. See how fast this gets some type of legislation from her buddies. What a joke.

So we lower the cost of housing so low income can afford it. Didn’t this already happen?? With very bad results.

My policy…House for Sale. If you got the money, buy it, if not, find one you can.
Did it ever dawn on these HUD folks that maybe some people don’t want to live in certain places? I don‘t want to live in Marin Cty and I’m white. But I did love San diego when I lived there back in the 60′s.

GOINGBECK, if an African American can legitimately afford to live in that neighborhood then they have something in common with their neighbors. In the Orlando community where Tiger Woods has his house, along with Magic players, they live side by side (actually, estate by estate) and all is well. Their common bond is the ability to pay for their homes.

In the 1960′s the government used forced busing to obligate the integration of schools. Now in 2011, they want to have racial profiling to decide who gets to live where. Is HUD going to enforce where you get to live, Labor where you get to work and how much you will get paid, HHS where you get your insurance and which doctor you go to….how many more nudges will we be able to resist?

It’s called the American Dream. And it is not given away for free! Oh..and that “social justice” stuff these dimwits are talking about is impossible. You can’t give someone good standing socially. No, that comes with hard work, honesty, and strength in character.

I would assume if the state told the Feds to pack sand and mind their own business the Feds would withhold their Federal funding. It doesn’t matter that the Federal taxes were collected from them in the first place. “Do as we say or you don’t get YOUR money back”. I believe that’s called extortion.

HUD is overlooking the other non-caucasian residents that get free housing. Pets are no longer pets, they have legal rights and get free housing by their caretakers. Get over it. People vote with their feet and their packetbooks. If you can’t afford to live someplace – don’t. It‘s no different tha if youu can’t afford the car, don’t buy it – if you cna’t afford the resaurant, don’t go there to eat.

It shouldn‘t be the government’s business, responsibility or authority to comment on how affordable something like housing is. The government should get back to worrying about your four basic rights … You have the Right to remain silent, …
