Are ‘Green’ Cabs Causing a Super Bowl Taxi Nightmare in Dallas?

It’s been a sub-par Super Bowl week in the host city of Dallas, TX.* The game, traditionally held in warmer climates, has been marred with unusual snowstorms in the “Big D.” But sports patrons lucky enough to score a game ticket have been annoyed by something other than the snow once their planes land: the city is experiencing a frustrating cab shortage. “Big D,” then, might stand for “big disappointment.”

Sure, some blame the weather, but there are others who blame the shortage on a cab driver strike. A strike fueled by anger over a new ordinance that gives preferential treatment to natural gas-powered taxis.

Dallas has two major airports, DFW and Love Field. This past spring, city officials passed an ordinance at the latter allowing new natural gas-powered cabs to jump to the front of the line to pick up passengers, a reward for being “green.”

“We have a responsibility as elected officials to ensure to the best of our ability that we breathe the healthiest air. That is why I voted for head-of-the-line, and I would vote for it again for the very same reason,” local council member Vonciel Jones Hill told the Dallas Morning News in defending the measure.

But that means traditional cabs are sometimes overlooked and some say underused. And considering that the bigger cab companies can more easily buy the expensive “green” cabs, the smaller companies and the independent drivers feel it’s unfair (as they did on New Year’s Eve):

So the “little guys” have been striking intermittently since the ordinance passed in March. They planned their latest work refusal for Super Bowl week. And it seems to be having, at least in part, the intended, crippling effect.

The Morning News notices that at least one prominent taxi stand — at the official Super Bowl media hotel — seems to be lacking the normal number of cabs, and “some out-of-towners have complained about long waits elsewhere.”

And while the strike is aimed at policies at Love Field, the shortage is spilling over to DFW. According to a message forwarded to the Morning News, DFW airport officials sent a frantic e-mail to tax drivers begging for more cabs:

DFW Airport is experiencing a disruption of taxicab service. Taxicab companies are requested to send any and all additional drivers and vehicles to the airport. Vehicles must be permitted at DFW Airport however drivers with a valid City of Dallas or City of Fort Worth driver permit are being allowed to operate at the Airport.” However we are in a CRITICAL state and any taxi you may have will be welcomed.

“This is what we normally do when weather hits or when there’s a shortage of taxis in the queue,” DFW Airport spokesman David Magana told the paper. “Our normally contingency plan is to call the cab companies in town and tell them that we’re relieving the permit requirements for the day, and that any cabs that they have can come to the airport and roll through the queue.”

But he was also not willing to blame, or credit, the strike, which might in turn reflect poorly on the ordinance.

“It has more to do with the snow really,” he said. “Before the snow was here, we were functioning just fine. There was never a shortage or a disruption in service.”

Dallas has seen an odd amount of snow over the last week. But according to an update to the Morning News’s story, even the city’s mayor pro tem — a councilman who supports the ordinance — recognizes the strike is a problem.

“Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway had asked cab drivers to postpone their strike during the Super Bowl and promised that, in exchange, he would work to bring them back to the table for discussions with the city,” the paper reports. And while he says he’s not willing to change the policy, he’s at least willing to listen to the cabbies.

That had no effect on the drivers. The strike continues. And so do the headaches.

*Technically, the game is being played in Arlington. It‘s also worth pointing out that some of the week’s festivities occurred in Dallas’s sister city of Ft. Worth. The two main airports service Dallas and Ft. Worth.

    I see this green car nonsense is starting to be a problem!! This Vonociel Jones Hill must be buddies with Van Jones… So now they are NUGGING Volt cars down our troths. Once again the government will pick the business winners and losers. In this case what cabbies will work and witch ones will not. I wonder how long it will be, before GE will be replacing gas stations with 110 receptacles all over the place. I sure my condo board will not allow me to run an electrical extension cord from my eight floor window. .. I am counting the days for the November 2012 election.

    This is all coming to every location as soon as they can put it in place. Research Agenda 21. The code word is “sustainability” and like most things the environmentalists push, it is all being done in what is good for the earth.
    We are already screwed. Sustainability groups have taken hold and gotten federal and state money to put in place the UN Agenda 21 programs. The progressives love to change the name of things, so follow the tracks. They are indoctrinating our kids, too. Lots of school programs teaching this stuff. Did you see the article about how Russia has a plan to move the people to population centers. This is global and it is in every state in the US. All those nutty things you hear about in California are planned all across this country.

    I read that this is a local government program however I can’t help but wonder if any of the funding came from the Feds. Somehow I’ll bet that it did. If not for the program itself then for the so called green taxis. A little social engineering with your Super Bowl, gang?

    Is there anyone, besides me, who is sick and tired of hearing the word “GREEN”? I am all for being a responsible citizen but each time I hear the word green, I make a mental note not to patronize the company if at all possible. I feel like I am being spoon fed and treated like I‘m a moron who can’t figure out how to behave responsibly. I think this is another arm of PC and all cabs ought to be treated equally, or can we all say, “discrimination”.

      SHOWTIME, in case you didn’t see my earlier post. I really enjoyed hearing about your family history. I have an email friend (in her 70′s) who studies Civil War cemetaries in FL. Her husband of about a year had a stroke a couple of years back and she pretty much gave up her life to take care of him as dementia has set in. I think you would love to chat with her.

      Personally, I have no problem with “Green” except that it usually means a small car. I don’t believe in Global Warming, but I like the idea of alternative fuels and avoiding pollution. I remember traveling to Los Angeles in the 70s and seeing that haze over the city. Although I was only about 7, I remember that more than anything else from that trip.

      I‘m a big guy and Green vehicles don’t agree with my height, shoulders, or wallet. A bike is the only Green vehicle that fits me.

Enjoyed your family story. One of my online friends is in her 70′s and does histories of Civil War cemetaries in FL.     Oh, SCREW the unions! All they do is make prices go up, strike whenever somebody whines, and bring havoc when they could help things run smoothly. During the times when they could simply make their statement and promote some GOOD will, they have to show their butts.

      You are all right…just to add a thought…these people start at the the city gov. levels and work their way to a place of nomination in state and national gov. positions. If we stop them in their tracks at home….well we may have a better chance for the future. This cab thing is a good example of what happens when city officials think they have lots of power.     This is the problem with progressives. They always want to force everyone to do things their way. This would have been solved very simply by having two different pickup points. One for green and one for fossil fuel. Then let the people choose their mode of transportation. If you don’t get picked you would think about changing very quickly.

      Attempting or conspiring with others to buy a handgun outside of your state of residence is a federal crime. Attempting or conspiring to attempt to transport illegally-purchased forearms across state lines is also a federal firearms felony. Bloomberg’s goons acted criminally. They committed multiple federal firearms crimes. Not only that, Bloomberg and his goons conspired to commit multiple federal firearms felony offenses.

      Of course, they won’t be prosecuted. You or I? Heck, a normal person wouldn’t see free daylight for a couple decades if we were to do the same.

      Regarding this “green cab” debacle, Progressives love to pick corporate winners & losers. They love to talk about how they are so very fair and even-handed, meanwhile they line their pockets with ill-gotten money via “crony capitalism” while howling about imagined unfairness in the business world and mock the general populace for being stupid if they dare complain.

      It’s preferential treatment to some businesses and should be struck down. Allowing larger companies to take more business? I agree that it may be shooting themselves in the foot to strike—but again, there is something extremely wrong (and most likely unconstitutional) with giving preferential treatment and a PUSH in business to those companies with the “green” cabs. This green movement is b.s. and well….what you lefties like to claim is CORPORATE WELFARE. Feel free to scream about that. Will you?

      @bobodu Unfortunately cabbies can’t charge market rate. Rates are fixed. If the city allowed all cab fares to double or triple today – there would be no problem. But for a regular cabbie, given the “Green” initiative and the snow on the ground, the lack of snow removal and salting – why risk it? Just enjoy the game and the superbowl folks take the train, bus, or limo.

      HUH??? So typical!! if you can’t win the argument on facts….bring in sexual preference…hey…what if they are black, hispanic, or hermaphrodite?? WHO CARES!! You do!! You’re the only hypocrite I see.
      It has nothing to do with the fact that the small cab companies are being shut out. Nudged to a outrageously expensive fuel standard for bogus reasons and it’s wrong. They need to put the “squeeze” back on the city gov. I think they are right for standing up for themselves, sure as heck no one else will!! These are the facts.

      If they are SO worried about CLEAN AIR maybe they should QUIT BREATHING.. after all the EPA says CO2 is a health hazard… Wonder if the dinosaurs had this problem with their air quality??

      This wouldn’t be a problem, if they stopped regulating the taxi cab industry to the point of no existence. If they ahve a fair amount of regulation that customers and drivers will be safe you would have no problem with this .
