Are Hispanic Kids Being Bullied in Alabama Because of Immigration Law? Parents Say Yes

Parents of Hispanic students say their children are facing more bullying in school following the implementation of Alabama's tough new illegal immigration law. (AP)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (The Blaze/AP) — It was just another schoolyard basketball game until a group of Hispanic seventh-graders defeated a group of boys from Alabama.

The reaction was immediate, according to the Mexican mother of one of the winners, and rooted in the state’s new law on illegal immigration.

“They told them, `You shouldn’t be winning. You should go back to Mexico,’” said the woman, who spoke through a translator last week and didn’t want her name used. She and her son are in the country illegally.

Spanish-speaking parents say their children are facing more bullying and taunts at school since Alabama’s tough crackdown on illegal immigration took effect last month. Many blame the name-calling on fallout from the law, which has been widely covered in the news, discussed in some classrooms and debated around dinner tables.

Earlier this month, reports spread that Hispanic children were “vanishing” from public schools amid fears they could be targeted for deportation.

Justice Department officials are monitoring for bullying incidents linked to the law.

“We‘re hearing a number of reports about increases in bullying that we’re studying,” the head of the agency’s civil rights division, Thomas Perez, said during a stop in Birmingham.

The Justice Department has established a bilingual telephone hotline and special email account for residents to report any violence or threats based on racial or ethnic background that could be linked to the law. Officials would not provide a breakdown on the types of complaints being received.

Yet the Alabama Department of Education hasn’t received any reports of bullying linked to the law, said spokeswoman Malissa Valdes, and it isn’t tracking the issue to determine whether there could be a problem. Any parents who call the state with complaints would be referred to their child’s principal, she said.

Federal officials say some parents – particularly illegal immigrants – may not report bullying to teachers and principals because they fear coming into contact with government officials.

Supporters of the law – which is being challenged by the Obama administration, individuals and private groups – contend it’s vital to reducing the cost of state and local government by getting illegal immigrants off public assistance. They also argue the measure will create jobs for legal residents by opening up positions that had been held by people living in the country illegally. However, Americans so far have shown little interest in the backbreaking, low-paying jobs at farms and poultry factories that were usually held by illegal immigrants.

Opponents contend the law is creating a climate of fear and mistrust in the state that’s unsettling for immigrants who are both legal and illegal. Immigrants tell of dirty looks in grocery stores, and online forums are full of angry, anonymous comments and from both supporters and opponents of the law.

Machine shop manager Hector Conde said his family has seen the problem firsthand. Conde, whose family lives in Autauga County north of Montgomery, was appalled when his 12-year-old daughter, Monica Torres, told him a schoolmate called her a “damn Mexican” during a school bus ride.

“She is a citizen. She doesn’t even speak Spanish,” said Conde, a U.S. citizen originally from Puerto Rico. “The culture being created [by the law] is that this sort of thing is OK.”

A Hispanic woman said her 13-year-old niece was called a “stupid Mexican” and told to “go back to Mexico” by a classmate in Walker County.

“She said, `If you‘re not going I’m going to punch you,’” said the woman, who spoke through a translator and didn’t want her name used.

Courts have struck down sections of the law, including a provision that required public schools to verify the citizenship status of students. Other parts remain in effect, including a part that lets police check a person’s immigration status during a traffic stop. Courts also can’t enforce contracts involving illegal immigrants, such as leases, and it‘s still a felony for an illegal immigrant to do business with the state for basic things like getting a driver’s license.

In Shelby County, where hundreds of Hispanic children are enrolled in schools in Birmingham’s southern suburbs, officials say they’ve had few reports of conflicts between Hispanic students and others.

“That isn‘t to say that it hasn’t happened, but if it has they haven’t been reporting it to school officials,” said Cindy Warner, a spokeswoman for the system.

U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance, the lead federal prosecutor for north Alabama, said many Hispanic parents may be afraid to report bullying for fear of coming in contact with government officials. Under the law, authorities are supposed to detain suspected illegal immigrants found living in the state and hold them for federal immigration authorities.

Parents may be afraid to go to even school teachers and principals, she said. “It seems likely to me that people are trying to keep their heads down and stay out of trouble,” said Vance.

Charles Warren is school superintendent DeKalb County, where about 18 percent of the 8,900 students enrolled in public schools are Hispanic. He doesn’t see much tension between Hispanic students and others – Crossville High School has had a Hispanic homecoming queen the last two years, he said.

“The kids get along great, it’s the adults who are the problem,” Warren said. “There are a lot of similarities to what went on back in the `50s and `60s with the civil rights movement. A lot of people are out of work now and they want to blame someone. I think the Hispanic people are catching a lot of that.”

Warren is right about at least one thing: The taunting extends to the grown-up world. Supporters of the law have filled Steve Dubrinsky’s email account with critical messages and peppered online message boards with negative reviews of his popular restaurant, Max’s Delicatessen, after a talk radio show mistakenly said he employs illegal immigrants at his business in suburban Birmingham.

Dubrinsky’s wife is a legal immigrant from Mexico, and he said all nine of his immigrant workers have proper papers. But he is still worried about the future of his business amid the onslaught.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this before,” said Dubrinsky. “Those reviews were just plain and simple out to get me over this.”

comments made by illegal mother and son….holding up Mexican flags….bad Americans telling illegal Mexican flag waving Mexicans to go back to the country of the flag they march with….hummmm……like other illegal activity participants protesting America for arresting them for selling dope, stealing gas, mugging someone, anything illegal for that matter. Insanity knows only insanity, This is not the UN and this certainly is not a global matter. This is America. American flag, American language, American laws… Why would anyone interview someone doing something illegal to get their VIEW on that illegality? Is Alabama bullying illegals by checking their legal status? Why aren’t they protesting for change in Mexico? Mexican flag? Mexican language? Mexican illegals? If America is so bad to them, why are they here?

I live in Alabama town of 25,000 population. The hispanic people have had protests, marching through town last 2 weeks. Last week there were 200-300 people involved. If they got their premit again, another will be held tomorrow (Sunday). No problems reported. Several hispanic businesses closed last Wednesday also in protest of the law. I don‘t have children in school now so I can’t comment on that aspect. Just fyi comment.

What can one expect when a number of people are actually “cutting in line” illegally where others were waiting patiently to become an actual citizen legally. The ones who are here legally should be pissed at the illegals for bringing all this about. Yes, there are jobs, but shouldn’t they be be reserved for the people who came through the system. The system won‘t work if it’s ignored…ILLEGAL IS CRIMINAL!

Stand strong, AL, apparently they don’t comprehend the new law or they would be gone. If they are there legally, WELCOME, if not, don’t let the door hit you in the backside on your way out of town. Kids get picked on and pushed around no matter what their ethnicity so they need to “buck” up. If you are here illegally and your kid gets picked on, leave, and go back from whence you came.

      Social Justice.

Remember the stakeholders that are defining social justice and preparing its standards? They include NOW, Beyond Beijing, social welfare leaders, environmental groups – all the voices that demand the abolition of Western culture, male leadership, and biblical absolutes. Look at their vision for Santa Cruz County:

      “Desired State: A Paradigm Shift
We envision a community that stretches itself from its historical conditioning and ethnocentric comfort zones to increased cross-cultural empathy and understanding – a community that avoids oppressive hierarchies, but instead passionately advocates for inclusion, respect and cooperation with all members.”

Politically correct tolerance sets a new standard for communication and inclusiveness. It immediately disqualifies biblical Christianity as exclusive, hateful, patriarchal, and intolerant. Their list of practical suggestions for change matches their vision:

Train facilitators for the “paradigm shift” to be wholistic supporters of the value of diversity
Develop an interagency approach to intolerance abatement
Encourage the business sector to hold managers accountable for promoting minorities and women into management.
Create a design for teaching the principle of universal security
Continue with forums, meetings, events, and expand our social justice library with books, tapes, video tapes for community TV, and literature available for interested people…
Involve college students and professors in social justice issues
Bring in speakers; support individual clubs.

Modern socialist leaders claim to know how to manipulate human nature. “We have to make better people,” urged Shirley McCune at the 1989 Governors Conference on Education. Nineteen years earlier, the ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the curriculum branch of the NEA) published To Nurture Humaneness in which Professor Raymond Houghton wrote,

“The critical point of behavior control, in effect, is sneaking up on mankind without his self-conscious realization that a crisis is at hand. Man will not even know that it is about to happen.”

How ironic that illegals are not reporting any abuse because ‘they want to keep their heads down and stay out of trouble’. Actually, they are in trouble already because they are ILLEGAL, and they are acknowledging their illegality by trying to hide from the law. If they can’t do the time, they shouldn’t do the crime.

Unless we start cracking down on breaking laws such as this, we are teaching future generations that any law can be broken…..and here comes anarchy.

This whole thing is a bunch of crap. This is America, the melting pot. American culture is a combination of all nationalities who came here, or were native to this country. Real Americans respect the other cultures in recognition of the fact that we, or our forbears, were all immigrants to this country. The American culture is a combination of cultures (from the UK, Spain, Mexico, France etc.).

It’s just not possible that Mexicans, who were among the first inhabitants of this country, would be harassing whites who came later. We are all one country. If Mexicans really are harrassing Caucasians because of their culture and color of their skin, that’s just wrong.

America is no longer a MELTING POT. The definition of “melting” infers that different materials LOSE their original form and shape, and become ONE.

Thanks to the LIBERAL concept of “multi-culturalism” – immigrants no longer feel the need to assimilate into American culture. Why learn English, when everyone from teachers to LE are expected to learn Spanish? When voting materials are printed up in multiple languages? Why bother going through the LEGAL process, when Nancy Pelosi will call you a hero for committing a crime?

We are a nation of LAW or lost to anarchy.

It’s sad that the kids are being used as pawns. The real issue here is who is paying for all the illeagle immigration? Where does it stop? How many illeagles who despise America are we going to let in and grant access the liberties other LEGAL immigrants fought for like my great grandparents, grandparents and uncles who fought in WWII. My father grew up for the first 5 years of his life speaking German. After that, he was sent to school and TOLD by my grandparents he was going to learn english. And, he remembers they asked him to help them learn Englishs he was learning it. I don’t know of a single German immigrant who wanted to be called a “German-American” and force the German Language and culture upon the USA. They wanted to melt into the pot. IF their German work ethic was adopted by the culture and perhaps some of their customs, well, that was great. Christmas celebrations are a good example of that. The Christmas Tree was originally a German idea. It took off here in the US. Nice, but, not necessary. If you don’t like a Christmas Tree….don’t have one. Don’t persecute me for celebrating my culture in my household. I dislike the commercial use of the Christmas tree now, because it lacks the biblical meanings behind it. Long story short, if the Mexicans wish to immigrate here legally…fine. Illeagles who certainly have disdain for America need to go. Either melt into the American culture, or go back to yours if you love it so much. Stop moochi

Bullying by hispanics toward white girls and boys alike is never addressed by the liberal (and also hispanic) school authorities. Wannabe gang-bangers abound. The boys are little molesters and treat the girls like meat. The girls are violent.

What you are saying is true about heavily dominated Hispanic school districts. Elementary white children in the Yakima School Districts in Washington state are made fun of because of the color of their skin, and the fact that they don’t speak Spanish. The faculty, the school boards are being taken over by legal Hispanics and they do nothing. Washington state is one of the three states left that issue drivers licenses to illegal aliens together with Utah and New Mexico. It is a launching pad for illegals as their first stop to get a license. They are finding illegals with Washington state drivers licenses as far east as New Jersey and as far south as Florida. The Tri-cities (Richland, Kennewick & Pasco) area is literally Little Tijuana.

      @Windwalker

I looked up the demographics of Yakima, WA. While I understand the frustration of being systematically invaded, 33% of the population just doesn’t compare to 70%, 80% or 90% like some places in Texas. It really sucks to have your culture ripped away, and I feel for you, but you just don’t know how bad it can get. Every time a little thug gets caught or shot by police while committing a crime, all the Mamasitas and Familias march/protest around with signs and tell the news “he was a good boy.” Then, to add insult to injury, they illegally sell barbecue plates to raise money to bury the deceased.

Just in case you are thinking of hiring one (even legal) don’t, or they will make off with your money, supplies and any spare change you have around the house without doing any work (hello! some fat turrrrrd did that to me a few months ago.) I believe all should have to prove they are here legally but when kids start taunting kids thats when parents should be ashamed. As far as the local radio station making that comment they had better come back on and say they were wrong.

You are ignorant. You are hateful. I know enough about you from your comment above to say these things confidently. Also…
If you have kids, they are dumb. If you have god, you are going to he!!. Your friends are Klan members and you beat your wife.
You probably deal with all your life’s problems by blaming others. You don’t like anyone who has a different opinion than your own. You are ugly. You smell bad. You have never met a mexican.

drago….seriously? Is that the best you’ve got. Perhaps you are a troll. I don’t know. If you can’t post a thoughtful, articulate, well thought out position as to why illeagle immigration should be curbed, then please, go read some books to educate yourself regarding the subject and then come back and post something responsible, worthy of who you are intellectually and morally. Otherwise, your posts are just fodder for the progressives. Back to the troll thing. I can’t think of any reason you would post that if you are not a troll. Common sense man.

Common usage in South Texas, Moreso used in Spanish calling illegals, “mojados”. And its usage is not only said by white people, but by blacks and us Tejanos. If I’m called a *******, by anyone, be prepared to get what is given. The racial epithets will fly in English and Spanish and maybe even some German. I’m not politically correct and since my people have been around these kinds of “ugly words” for generations, I‘m not saying it doesn’t anger me, but it’s said because of so many illegals living, working, and getting their kids free education, healthcare, and food here in Texas. Stereotypes exist for a reason. It may not be fair and some may think the word“*******” is wrong, but it’s reality. It doesn’t offend me, I’m American, born to two American parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents on both sides of the family. If a white or black person gives me dirty looks or assumes I do not speak English or I hear the word said toward me or anyone around me, I‘ll just remind them that my people didn’t come over here as slave traders or slaves on rat infested vessels. My people were here conquering lands and wise enough whether right or wrong to map it and lay claim to it by the Spanish Crown. That usually shuts them up.

Well at least that is what the Obama administration is encouraging them to say. I smell a law suit and it has Holder’s stench all over it.

hkyfan36. The just of the story was that the AMERICAN students got beat on the basketball court by the mexican kids. Perhaps some were legal, perhaps some were not. As children do, they resort to name calling when they have nothing else to back up their performance. (Hmmmmm…think about that, JUST like the liberals do when they lose arguments to the truth and fact) Sorry to digress…..

Anyway the fact here is that tensions are running high and the only way to take it out of the school systems is to take the illeagles out of it. It’s everywhere across the country. My kids see it, the great stubborn liberan double standard. The illeagles and yes even the “African-Americans” can say and do whatever they want without impunity. Logic would stand that no one party has the moral high ground to bully in any way. Current truth is that they are empowered by political correctness run amuck. Shameful.

The Alabama kids made a factual statement. They don’t belong here and they need to go home. If they want to stay, go about it the legal way and at least learn the English language.

What do you expect! Washington and Businesses throughtout the US have caused this to happen. The Obama Administration will only move if it will get more hispanic votes. Business makes big profits both here and abroad on cheap labor, and Wall Street lights up!
I hate name-calling, but worst than that I really hate liars. and we got the biggest one in the White House!

Easy to do IF you are here legally. I am asked for my “papers” all the time. Want to open a bank account, show your papers. Want to write a check, show your papers. Want to buy tobacco or alcohol, show your papers. Want to drive on public roads, show your papers. Want a library card, show your papers. Unlike some I have had to show my papers for every job I have ever gotten. Want insurance, show your papers. I, a natural born US citizen have had to show my papers my whole life on a daily basis. Why should ANYONE else not have to do what I have to do?

Exactly. Every American has to show proof for everything. From registering your kids for school to opening an account at COSTCO or getting a state ID or driver’s license. Legal American citizens have to validate everything and it is normal to do so especially in the times we’re living in. Illegal immigrants have a fanciful notion in their head that if they come here under the radar, they’ll reap the rewards. And only the rewards. I feel bad for these anchor babies, who did nothing wrong and cannot help they were born here with illegal immigrants for parents. The parents are completely deluded into thinking that everything will be better once they get here. Years go by and laws like this get tougher and their families suffer because of their misguided decisions to live and work here illegally. These people may have had good intentions by sneaking over here, but will only cause trouble and pain for their kids and themselves down the road, when the laws are actually enforced. This is brought unto themselves. Showing papers validating one’s identity is common and offence should not be taken. If you’re an American citizen, you’ve got nothing to worry about. However, Barry will probably start placing Check point Charlie’s from state to state at any time with his dictatorship style and that is something to worry about among real Americans.
