Are the New Tim Tebow Jesus Jerseys ‘Blasphemous?’

Tim Tebow, the quarterback for the Denver Broncos, is a familiar name to many Americans. His talent and faith have earned him a great deal of publicity and, of course, scrutiny.

Recently, the “Tebowing” phenomenon (the act of dropping to one knee and pretending to pray) gained plenty of media attention.

But while critics were busy making fun of Tebow, who is a devout Christian, fans put together a response that is already spawning controversy among Christians. In a show of support for the famed footballer, Denver fans have crafted special Tim Tebow jerseys. Rather than placing his name on the back of the garment, the word “Jesus” is sewn into the material along with “15,” which is the player’s number.

(Related: Over on the Blaze blog, Mike Opelka asks, “If Tim Tebow was a Muslim, would be be mocked when she shouts “Allahu Akbar” after each touchdown?”)

But while this act was done in a show of support for the player and his faith, some are calling the act blasphemous. According to the Christian Post, Jason Homer, who is originally from Colorado, but who is serving as a missionary in Lima, Peru, believes that the Jesus jerseys are “disrespectful.”

Are the New Tim Tebow Jesus Jerseys Blasphemous?

“I think it is ridiculous that people are creating Jesus jerseys with Tebow’s number. I like Tebow but that is just wrong,” he told the Post. “I do not agree with the way they are using the name of Jesus.”

Others, simply don’t see the need for the Jesus jerseys.

“Sports is one thing, and Jesus is another thing,” said Traci Yown, a citizen who weighed in on the jerseys. “I’m a Christian, but I mean I wouldn’t want people going around having Jesus on the back of their jerseys,” she continued.

Some, though, do support the shirts. Take, for instance, Sondra Simmons, a member of Applewood Baptist Church in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. “I think it’s a good idea because it gets Jesus’ name out there,” she said. “I would think most Christians would be okay with it.”

Rev. Marcus Buckley of Riverside Baptist Church in Greer, South Carolina, though, has a unique view on the matter. ”It’s not saying that he is Christ, it‘s saying he’s trying to demonstrate and live that out and as Christians that’s what were supposed to do,” he said.

Alas, Tebow finds himself at the center of yet another faith controversy.

Amen! And when Tebow drops to one knee he isn’t pretending to pray. Tim has done missionary work himself, and I don’t believe he wants anyone to think that he is Jesus; just that he loves Jesus!

Maybe not blasphemous, but it seems to be Idolatry. I wouldn’t do it. I‘m a Christian and I don’t wear a cross. I try my best to let the light of the indwelling Jesus Christ let people know who I am. I like to say I polish my mirror to better reflect Jesus! Not prefect but I try hard to be humble. Less of me more of him. It is the key. Humility was Jesus walk. This just doesn’t come across as humble.

Sorry nam, but that has to be the dumbest thing I have heard today. You can’t see the difference between a symbol, and worshiping said symbol as a diety? I know you can see the difference, and I hope you take a moment to examine the true cause of your shame in other seeing that you are a Christian beyond any doubt. To me, this viewpoint is cowardice.

i wish the people who wear those gold crosses would realize he’s not on the cross anymore. they might as well put that golden calf around their neck.

You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.

      @ Amos

I struggled with this concept for awhile too, but ultimately I decided to wear a cross. It IS a symbol of my faith (just a symbol… not an idol) and more importantly, I decided to wear it because it represents the cross I myself bear that Jesus so graciously took the punishment for. I owe Him my life, as do all of us who are Christians. Proclaiming Him is part of that.

as for the Jersey… I live in Colorado and am a Denver Broncos fan. Thrilled to have him in our organization. However, I am on the fence about the Jersey. Yes, you can wear it as a tribute to Jesus, but it still depicts the number 15 (Tebow’s number). this can easily be misconstrued as “Tebow is Jesus to these freaks… which we all know the left will jump all over. How about a jersey with “Jesus” as the name, but the number being more appropriately 1?

I think people need to look up the definition of “blasphemous”. Better yet, read the Word and find out what it means. This is in no way “blasphemous”. I think Jesus would love it and I know he is in the stands with those wearing them. The issue with a lot of people these days, and Christians especially, is the talk a lot but don’t read the Word enough to really get the story straight. As I read it I am always amazed at what I have missed before. It is truely a wonderful work and I love reading and learning each day.

As a Broncos fan (and a huge Tebow fan) I couldn’t agree with you more. People are just looking for ANY reason to trash him. It’s stunning to see the emotions he invokes in some people. I think it says more about them than it does Tebow.

America AND the NFL NEED a man like Tim Tebow… we’ve been waiting for him. Look at how many people support him who have never paid attention to a game. I don‘t like the Jesus jerseys and my guess is that he doesn’t either simply because the doubt over intent is in question. But I pray he becomes the QB no one says he will become and that he silences every naysayer out there.

PS: If there were more men like Tim Tebow in sports, he wouldn’t stand out so much. In fact, if there were more men like him PERIOD, we wouldn’t all be making such a big deal of him.

I don’t have a problem with fans making these jerseys and wearing them proudly to games and elsewhere. I like the idea of having an openly religious player in the NFL and would support any manner of demonstrating that faith. Now, if Tebow had made the jersey himself and started wearing them around I would consider him the most conceited individual on the planet. The way it stands, however, he should be proud considered by his fan base as a symbol of faith. I’m not a (Denver) Broncos fan (Boise all the way) but I root for Timmy when he doesn’t play my team. I don‘t think Tebow has anything to do with it other than it’s his jersey that the fans are having the name of Jesus put on. These are custom jerseys you can buy from the NFL website. You can have your name put on the back of the jersey or the name of your Savior. The NFL isn’t marketing the Jesus jerseys, at least not yet, nor did Tebow suggest that people do this. This is being done by individual fans.
Personally I don’t find it blasphemous at all. I highly doubt Jesus cares a lick about football, and I know some Christians that have a great dislike for the NFL since the majority of games are on Sunday and feel it detracts from church attendance. Tebow lives an admirable life and thanks and credits his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ when being interviewed after every game. Some Broncos fans, like myself, love to hear the name of Jesus during the post game interviews and feel he represents Christians in a positive way.
It’s also very nice to have a positive Christian role model in the NFL that our children can look up to. So many professional athletes are horrible role models, Tebow is just such a breath of fresh air. I think that is the main reason he has so many fans because it certainly isn’t due to his accurate passing ability. I hope he continues to improve and remains in the league for many years to come, even if it isn’t for the orange and blue.
Go Tebow, Go Broncos, and most importantly Go Jesus!

I agree. It might be a little off topic but I‘m a huge heavy metal fan and there is a lot of discussion in the scene about how heavy metal bands can’t be Christian, or how it’s blasphemous to scream/sing the name of Jesus Christ while shredding on a Warlock guitar with heavy distortion. Sure there is a lot of metal, especially Black metal and Death metal, that glorify the occult and the evil one, but there are a lot of Christians that love that style of music and want to reach the lost souls that metal has impacted in a negative way. Christian metal is on the rise especially in secular European countries. If you have a loved one that you feel needs Christ and is into this scene, recommend to them Sleeping Giant, War of Ages or any band that is on the Facedown record label. Immortal Souls is a personal favorite.

That is because the true name of the Son of the Almighty is NOT Jesus – it is Yeshua or spelled Yahshua. He came as a Jew and is still a Jewsih Messiah and no amount of the churches attempts to strip the Jewisness out of the bible will change that fact. All this controversy over His Name and people don’t even speak the true name. Scripture also tells us “to the Jew first” thats what Paul did in all of his evangelizing, he went to the Jewish Synagogs first. If you are a Jew and you come into most churches today you will never hear the true name of Yahshua spoken. Just reverence for “Jesus” who the crusaders worshipped after they locked women and children in synagogs and burned them to death in Jerusalem and then next day had ” so-called holy communion. Don’t get me wrong – I love the Son of YHVH, I have a personal relationship with Him and He is gracious and merciful and so forgiving of our ignorance, but when one knows better and persists in not even calling Him by his True Name, I believe it shows a disrespect much greater then those who don’t know His true name putting Jesus on a jersey. I just wish it was Yahshua. After all at the end of “The Book” in Revelation He is still identified with Jews – He is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah – “Weep not behold “the Lion of the Tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book” Rev 5v5. And I honor His True Name.

YHWY = Yahwey JHVH = Jehovah

you said “He came as a Jew and is still a Jewish Messiah”
Many accepted him but as a nation the Jews rejected Jesus.
Pilate said to them: “Shall I impale your king? The chief priest answered: “We have no king but Caesar.” John 19:15
“It was necessary for the word of God to be spoken first to you. Since you are thrusting it away from you and do not judge yourselves worthy of everlasting life, look! we turn to the nations. Acts 13: 46

I think its fine. Tim is not saying he is Jesus. He is not saying he is perfect like Jesus was and is.

When we become Christians, we invite Jesus into our hearts, into our lives.
I think it gives Jesus attention and that is what is being objected to.

We are to try and be Christ Like.
Our goal is to try and act and behave the way Jesus would.

The only reason this is hated by the secular world is that even the NAME of Jesus is offensive to their wicked life.

If someone put the name Mohammond on the back of a Jersey with a players number on it, nobody would object, But JESUS ohh the horror of it.

palerider54 Amen, we should try to obey Biblical teachings!
The truth is we can’t even get close to Jesus in righteousness, we must take his righteousness as our position with God, Jesus is the only thing that can unite man with a Holy God. Man cannot save anyone, we can only point them to Jesus! Too many people think man can declare them righteous, we can’t do that!

You get your Jesus jersey when he returns, and it’s not made in China, so it won’t wear out! Get your order in, cause it’s a one time offer.
