Are We Headed for a ‘Double Dip’ Recession? It’s Possible

Yale University Senior Lecturer and Executive chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia Stephen Roach thinks it’s unwise to deny the possibility of a “double-dip” recession. And it’s even “ludicrous” that the administration refuses to recognize the possibility.

“I am an advocate of the view that post-crisis recoveries are weak and much more vulnerable to double dips than most of the talking heads you have on this show,” he told CNBC Monday morning. “I’ve seen repeatedly categorically denials from the president on down no danger of a double dip. It’s ludicrous to talk about no danger of a double dip in a weak, post-crisis recovery. You’ve got to be alert for that possibility.”

You can watch his comments below:

That comes as John Mauldin predicts a 2011 recession:

The data this week was just ugly. Even the uptick in the leading economic indicators, seized upon by so many talking heads, must have a large asterisk beside it.

This week we look at the increasing probability that we are headed for recession, and the follow-on implications. …

With the Fed artificially holding down rates on the short end of the curve, we are not going to get an inverted yield curve this time, so we have to look for other indicators to come up with a forecast for the US economy. We grew at less than 1% in the first half of the year. That is close to stall speed. And that was with a full dose of QE2!

But remember, according to the president, the economy is better since he took office.

    Recession? What recession.
The CIC (communist in Charge) would not be going to his dacha on the Black Sea for some more R&R if we were in a recession.
BTW, Sunday he went to the home of the CEO of PMSNBC Comcast(10 min away) to plan re-election strategy.
He took about 9 gas guzzler motorcade over for his tete a tete.
A poster on another site remarked that marxists likes to babble about carbon footprints and how we should all use smaller footprints. And that it would be a much smaller carbon footprint if the CEO had gone to visit Soetero..

Soetoro the marxist is just like marxist alBore when it comes to babbling about carbon footprints and the saving of Mother, (Earth)

Lower taxes? I can’t believe after all that has been seen over just the last 10yrs you still believe that tax cuts create jobs! You also need to check a different thread on this site about the republicans attempting to raise the payroll tax! As far as letting those that know how fix the problem. I think you mean, let those that created the problem fix it! The policies that lead us to this point were put in place by a republican majority years ago.

      zman,

The “dear leader” was Bush for 2 of those years! Then you had 2 years of trying to repair the results of a huge economic catastrophe. Could the dems have done a better job? Absolutely! But the fact remains, the reps campaigned on Jobs Jobs Jobs, and haven’t introduced 1 jobs bill in almost 1 year! Nope, one of the first things on their agenda was going after Planned Parenthood? Really?

We have a president who has found himself in a very similar position to the boy who cried wolf. The President’s cries of recovery for two and a half years, with economic signs showing just the opposite, have begun to ring hollow with the people.
Unfortunately, the boy who cried wolf didn‘t graduate from an Ivy League school or have a crowd of consultants to help him deal with the town’s people when a real wolf showed up.
But the president who cried recovery has all of that – and more.
With the economy showing signs of slowing, and possibility headed into a double-dip recession, the President and his consultants have come up with a new cry for the people: “recovery sabotage.”
Blame GOP political posturing. Blame tsunamis. Blame Europe. Blame the middle east. Blame ATMs. Blame Wall Street. Blame the tea parties. Blame Washington bickering.
So according to Obama..the recovery that was, that actually really wasn’t, would be a recovery today, if not for the meddling and manipulation of the Tea Party and Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives that retroactively sabotaged the recovery that began the day Barack Obama implemented his economic policies; thus vindicating the President who cried recovery by proving a grand scheme by Republicans to do whatever it takes to ensure that Obama would be a one term President.

Thomasdroppedatbirth…You’re bleating about the GOP and “200 days”. The Ryan Plan, Cut, Cap and Balance, the repeal of Obamacare. All measures that could have helped restore some measure of confidence to the business sector…and the Democrats stonewalled them.
It’s been over 800 days and the democrats in congress have not produced their constitutionally required budget. Some of that time they enjoyed a super majority in both houses of congress…they didn’t need a single GOP vote to pass a budget.
Obama did offer a laughable exercise he called a budget. It was voted down unanimously in the Senate 97-0. It proposes expanding government spending by 3.4 trillion dollars. Obama also wanted a vote on the debt ceiling “no questions asked”. You‘ll recall he voted against raising the debt ceiling in 2006 and the next two years didn’t bother to vote at all.
All your bleating Thomasdelusional is simply tailored to misdirect from the fact that Obama and the democrats have failed this country. Your “200 days” is simply the Kabuki theatre of a dyed-in-the-wool Obama supporter whistling past the graveyard.

Thomasdaddy has a point about tax cuts creating jobs… in the past, like in the Reagan years, this has worked because we actually produced goods in the US. Today we do not produce nearly as much in the US as we used to. Our middle class is disappearing as production and technology jobs are being moved to China, India and the like. Tax cuts just allow corporations to have record profits as this allows them to expand production in another country instead of building America back up.

The real issue here is how the US taxes corporations higher than most any other country. We have seen what happens when a State reduces its corporate taxes that it attracts companies to build there. If you want to see jobs return to America we need extensive tax reform. Until then we will see the continued immigration of US jobs to other countries. Possibly in the future, 10 – 20 years, you will see the immigration of US citizens to these other counties to find work.

Congress has been lead by the republican Party since Nov, but they have done nothing to attempt to improve the economy! Why? Because they need the economy to stay in the crapper in order to win an election! Almost a year in control and no jobs bill, when that’s the platform they ran on! Then you have republicans that voted against a jobs bill introduced by democrats. What’s worse is no one is holding them accountable! If the fed reserve throws more money at it (QE3) then yes and gold will hit 5k. Gold, an asset, is an indicator of how people feel about the economy…it goes up, people believe we are doomed…if it goes down then they believe it is under control.

QE2 artificially helped out wall street. Not main street…we feel it, have been feeling since 2007…and no pay raises since that time…two jobs are not enough. Bankers are tighter than a ticks ********* with their money…they are waiting for inflation/hyperinflation…I recall paying 17% interest rates for an auto and 14% for my mortgage…

It is now all left up to Obama…it is now on his ticket and he has no plan, never had one. Plan due sometime in SEP and they have just a couple of weeks to negotiate it…yeah set up for failure since Obama refused to admit his past policies have FAILED.

With all the regime changes, further decline in economics world wide and a government that looks as if it wants to convert us to socialism, things are looking grim. There have been times lately that I wish for something to happen that sends the world back 2 or 3 hundred years, the thought of living off the land looks more and more appealing. I would imagine that sounds pretty crazy to those that live in the city, but since I live in the country it’s not that far fetched.

@ Tech: Paul Warburg represented the Rothschild banking interest in helping create the Fed Reserve Bank which is not part of the fed guvmint. But was created so rich Jewish banking Interest could create money out of whole cloth and we get stuck paying for it.The Rockerfellers are also involved w/ this.

The “Red Sea” is so-named after Edom. Mayer Amschel Bauer honored his father Esau by changing his family name to “Rothschild”, or “Red Shield”. The founder of the House of Rothschild drew up plans for the creation of the Illuminati and one world government, entrusting Adam Weishaupt with its organization and development.

The Illuminati. = The Bilderbergers,The CFR,Skull and Bones.and The Jesuit Order. = The NWO/OWG/World Governance.
The NWO are not enemies of Communism.

psst: I was with you right towards the end… lol While it‘s pretty obvious that there’s a conspiracy taking place I do not feel or think that it is as well organized as you describe. Or I should say as interconnected. Could the Jewish elite be working through the Bilderberg group and be a part of the Illuminati? Potentially. Even probably but it sounds like you may have been listening to Alex Jones too much. I believe that his sole mission is to bring doubt and confusion upon the entire situation all the while shielding the Jewish element from any blame in the conspiracy.

I like him and believe that much of what he reports is factual but I’ve noticed that what he does best is insert confusion.

Anyway you seem to have a thorough understanding of the situation at hand. Far too many are simply clueless.

@Tech. You may find this hard to believe, but I have never heard or read Alex Jones in my life.
      I do a lot of reading . And I check articles .
IMO. the NOW/OWG is real. But what da hey. That’s just me.
It is also my opinion that for the anti-christ to arise, there must be a World Government.
Needless to say, I’m one of those crazy folks who read the comic boook call the Bible.
Thirty yrs ago when I was on the road as a sales rep, one of my accounts turned me onto some of these things that I now believe. Back then I thought it was all crapola.
Oh well. nice talking w/ you.

Double dip? of course we are unless Obama announces his withdrawal from the 2012 race which his majesty wouldn’t think of doing. For many there is no double dip because they don’t feel like we ever got out of the original recession. BTW, it’s time to clean house of this corrupt Chicago style double dealing administration who gave taxpayer stimulus money out like candy to their buddies.

never came out of recession since this Marxist/Socialist/COmmunist has been in office. We won’t come out of it either until he is unseated from that office he has tarnished. It is truly saddening that over 51% of this country voted for a Marxist/Socialist/Communist. So many people in the armed forces and the intelligence community have given their lives to keep communism away from our shores and an uneducated public has voted them into power. Shameful!!! We are stuck with a voting public that has been indoctrinated by the public school system and the higher education system in this country to believe that “gubmint” should be everything to everyone and that “to each according to his needs, from each according to his ability” We are in dire straights!!!!

Surprise, surprise CNBC has someone on that actually thinks and is not a democrat, Obama mouthpiece and from Yale no less. That might be a stretch! From what is observed in my state is we never recovered from the first government caused recession, it’s not getting any better and there is no relief in sight and there won’t be until every “D” and Obama is defeated. Just concerned about how more damage the democrat controlled US Senate, Pelosi’s minions in the house and BHO can do in the time they have left to accelerate the effect of their destructive policies and regulations!

9/11/11 – 7 Reasons To Brace For Impact
      by Zen Gardner

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s not looking good for this 10th anniversary of 9/11. All the indicators are there to tell us they need a massive distraction and excuse to take this idiotic war on terror to horrific new levels and even more Orwellian internal controls and crackdowns.

Stuck_in_CA: I’ve been looking for an attack on Iran for a long time. As soon as they realize they can‘t manipulate the Stock Market any longer on the upside they will need a scapegoat to turn everyone’s attention away from the real problems and what better goat than Ahmidenijad.

All I can say is that Russia and China are getting pretty tired of our Meddling. An attack on Iran could open a can of worms which our Jewish Apartheid is not prepared for.

By the way, I bet Mr. Roach is doing just fine.. Any takers? lol

there will be a convergence of so very ugly events that will put the US and quite possibly the whole world into a deep depression.
    1. Arab – Israeli conflict – oil shortage etc.
    2. The world takes away USA’s printing press and goes under a world currency that is made up of various currencies.

these two things are know events that will happen – there are other unforeseen events that could also come into the picture – like a natural disaster?

Be prepared out there it will get nasty!

Well things can’t be all that bad at all. After all our President is taking another one of his frequent vacations. No sane person would do that with the economy in that bad a shape. The sky can’t be falling if our leader is busy, not at his oval office desk, but on the 10th fairway.

Double dip? There was never and end to the first “dip”. Changing the way you calculate unemployment, inflation, etc., doesn’t change anything. We are well above 10% unemployment and at 8-9% inflation not 2-3%. Clunkers credit and 8k for home buys, caused and artificial spike followed by a larger fall and tighter markets for used cars and homes. Commodities are up. There is no double dip, this is a downward spiral.

That is a funny headline since really we are in a depression…Just wait till hyperinflation hits. It’s gonna be a time we would wish for just a recassion. And it is at the feet of our tyrranical Government!!

The ONLY reason we can even say this is a recession (or not one yet) is because the Government accounting on the economy is total bullcrap!

      I concur!

When Dems start blaming the Tea Party for all of our woes when it is them who are to blame, then you know we are really in trouble. How can anyone in their right mind believe the the TP with their less than a year presence in the house can be to blame for the loss of job growth. Being a Dem means you never have to say your sorry. They have a lot to account for.
