Are You Going to Click the FBI’s Link to See If Your Computer Is Infected With Malware? (Take Our Poll)

Internet users know by now not to click on random email links on untrusted websites or within emails. It can open the door for infection and snooping of your personal material. But what about when the government tells you to click on a link? Does that make it OK? Would you trust it then?
It is estimated that 64,000 computers in the United States are still infected with a malware called DNSChanger. It is harmful enough that the government has taken steps to help eradicate it, including working with a private company to install two clean Internet servers to take over for the malicious servers so that people would not suddenly lose their Internet.
(Related: The FBI could cut your Internet access in four days (here’s how to prevent it))
But come Monday, computers that remain infected will have their Internet access taken away. They’ve been warned. For months.
To find out if your computer is infected, the company the FBI is working with in this situation set up a link that when clicked will tell you if you’re clean or not. It’s fast and easy — and yet are you going to click it? Have you clicked on it?
For several months, Internet users around the world have been encouraged to click links for their respective countries to make sure they’re not infected. Given that 277,000 computers worldwide — down from about 360,000 in April — are still infected, there has to be a reason why some aren’t checking and/or cleaning up the malware from their devices with the instructions provided by the DNS Changer Working Group website.

Clicking on one of these links, depending on your country, will let you know if you're infected or not. (Image: DCWG.org)
The Blaze did some Web searching to see if there is any skepticism when it comes to clicking on the link and over the last few months. There has been some, mostly on blogs and obscure forums. For example, on a forum for the blog “Mr.Landlord” one commenter says “My skeptical side immediately decided that this was a way for the government to gain access to all personal computers, but I think like this, given the history we know.”
While some agreed, in theory, with this concept, others tried to set the record straight. One said: “This is the real deal and not some government tin foil. The government, led by private companies, took this virus over. They are unable to shut it down as that will effectively stop your Internet from working, if your computer is infected.”
Some Blaze commenters too, in an article written about the July 9 shutdown for infected computers back in April, were skeptical about some elements of this process. Here are a couple comments from that dialogue (Editor’s Note: Some of the commenter’s text has been cleaned up for grammar and spelling):
- Jenniferyludy: It’s pretty sad that I do not walk away from this story with a since of urgency to check my computer for this or any other virus. What I do walk away from this article asking is: #1 – how does the government know that your computer is infected? This would strongly insinuate that the government is or has (or has acquired software that can) scan each and every computer for anything of their interest. NOT CONSTITUTIONAL! For starters, what about the freedom of speech. Next, how about searches without warrants. That’s just for starters. #2 – what gives them the authority to restrict your internet access?
- MrKnowItAll: One reason this is being done. To get you to Voluntary hand over everything you do on your Computer.
But the skepticism isn’t all the result of conspiracy theorists. Our own Editor-in-Chief Scott Baker talked about the link on the Glenn Beck Radio Program today and said, for whatever reason, he just couldn’t bring himself around to click.
Given that tech experts, who are generally very cautious about Internet privacy, are all providing how-tos when it comes to checking the infection status of your device, it’s probably safe to say that you can click without worry.
But will you? Take our poll and let us know what you think.
If you really don’t want to click the link, Facebook, Google and Internet service providers have been issuing messages to users if they detect the malware on your device. If you received a message that looks like one of the below, you’re probably infected and should take steps to remedy the situation.

Facebook's message about the potential for malware. (Image via PCMag)

Google's warning messages. (Image: Google)
Or, you can just wait until Monday. If your Internet keeps working, you’re good to go. If not, you’ll need to contact your Internet service provider (via phone) for next steps.

Posted on July 5, 2012 at 7:24pmMy advice at present is to not go to the link. Download and run ComboFix (it’s the second button- blue and not the first button-yellow). http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/
Most computers ARE infected with some kind of malware. After running ComboFix, which most likely will reboot your PC a few times, give it one more reboot. Then download and run Malwarebytes, http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (the download button not the buy button). When you first run it, after it’s installed and updated, select “decline” then do a full scan. When it’s done click on the button on the low right, then “fix now’.
If you want a really good anti-virus get F-Secure Internet Security, http://www.f-secure.com/en/web/home_global/home you can also run their cleanup toll at http://www.f-secure.com/en/web/labs_global/removal/easy-clean.
Here is a direct link to the DCWG website that will not run any software. You can read about it here;

It should be obvious that my computer wasn’t affected. However even when my computer isn’t affected by something like this I usually try to find the fix in case it happens later.Oh who am I kidding ,its also, because I walk my friends through a lot of their computer troubles.Which could be avoided if they would have listened in the first place.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 10:00amYou can do what The-Monk says or dump Windows. Try a flavor of Linux. Here is an easy one: http://www.ubuntu.com/ Oh, and it’s free which means tax free too. There are probably hundreds of versions of Linux with various ‘windows’ type interfaces. Pick one you like, I picked Xubuntu. After a couple of months I realized I didn’t need Windows for anything and my computer is faster.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 10:36amIf you want to do an easy and quick check to see if your Windows based Computer is infected do this:
Look for the Windows Logo key on your keyboard (lower left or right on either side of the shift key), hold it down and press the R key. Or; in XP, left click on start and run; Vista and 7, left click start (start is the Windows Logo normally on the lower left of the toolbar).
Type CMD and hit the enter key.
In the DOS command (black window) type in ipconfig/all and hit the enter key.
Look for the Ethernet adapter that has all the numbers listed (scroll up or down to find it.
Look for DNS Servers (there will be 2 listed, example 65.32.5.65 and 65.32.5.70)
If your DNS numbers look anything like this; (the x’s can be any number) you are infected.
85.255.xx.xxx,85.255.xxx.xxx
85.255.xxx.133,85.255.xxx.xxx
Close the window when done. If you are infected and do not trust the FBI link just leave me a reply here and I will respond. I’ll check back to this post 3 or 4 times per day today through Sun night.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 12:44pmThe guys writing this story and creating a poll are not very tech savvy. This website that does the scan for you is not associated with the FBI at all. So the government has nothing to do with it. He is an open souce It simply does a reverse tracert to your IP address and looks for the suspected DNS server IP addresses in the trace. Very simple, and no privacy violated. Wait and see if you want, then you can pay someone like me to come fix it on Monday…

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 1:29pmBy visiting the DNS checker website, you are *not* allowing the government into your hard drive. If you believe that they can do that by visiting a website, you need a better understanding of how the Internet works. Just because the FBI is part of the government does NOT mean that they can enter your hard drive through a basic webpage. What the website does, rather, is check if you’re accessing the Internet through their servers (which would be the case if you’re infected). It doesn’t even look at your computer. It just checks how you’re accessing their page.
The site is perfectly safe, and the government can NOT snoop on you through it.

Posted on July 5, 2012 at 6:12pmJust an FYI, there are many sites I’ve visited recently that has asked me to redirect to another page when no reason to do so is present . Thankfully IE and Firefox has blocked the redirect. Now on the surface this does not mean the site visited is infected, it just means I’ve notice an increase request to do so. This alone makes me suspicious. Just a thought.

Posted on July 5, 2012 at 5:40pmif you loose your internet on monday, do not contact your internet service provider because there is nothing they can do for you. the internet is on, it is your computer that is infected. you will need to call a computer tech to come fix it. to my knowledge ISPs do not fix computers, at least the one i work for doesnt. so if you havent clicked on any links in unknown or suspicious e-mails, you probably have nothing to worry about. if you have, you have been playing russian roulette with your computer and you should consider clicking the link. if you have ever clicked on a page and then tried to close it or go to another and you get a pop up that asks if you would like to navigate away from this page click ok… DO NOT click ok, DO NOT click cancel, DO NOT click the little red x in the pop up. open your task manager and close the page down from there. if you have clicked those things, you should consider clicking the FBI link and STOP clicking on those things. i am sure some of you already know this, so this post is not for you. its for the people who are careless on the internet and people who think that your ISP is going to come to your house and fix a virus in your computer. for those people, stop being careless if you want to keep your personal info private and your ISP is not going to take on the liability of you computer because of a virus you infected it with.

Posted on July 5, 2012 at 5:26pmI can understand the hesitance of clicking said link, but if you understand how this specific piece of malware works, it gives a better understanding of what this site actually does. The malware it is talking about basically redirects you to a different site through the servers run by the malware group. This means all your traffic is going through their servers before going to your intended site. When the group using this malware group was busted, taking the servers down doesn’t remove the malware from your computer (if you have it) meaning that the malware would try to connect to the now down servers and would never go to your intended site. Instead of letting everyone with the malware’s Internet drop, they basically ran the servers without using it for the original malicious intent. The site they have up basically just tells you if you are accessing the page through the non-malicious malware servers. It doesn’t actually access your computer and has nothing to do with your ISP. I simply sees where you are accessing the site from, aka through the dns servers you would normally pass through to get to a site, or those DNA servers, plus the malware server. Really, if you have the malware, those servers could theoretically used for malicious intent, meaning it would be better to run some kind of malware scanner to take it off if you are really worried about the site (Malwarebytes or spybot search and destroy being two popular options).

They check to see what DNS (domain name system; the servers that handle the translation of domain names to IP addresses such as) server your computer is connecting to to handle your web queries. If it detects that the DNS server is correct, you are fine. If not, well, im not sure, because I am not infected and have not seen any yet that have been.
