Are You Prepared For a Financial Emergency? Survey Says Most Americans Aren’t

CHICAGO (AP) — Even after the jolt of the Great Recession, a new study finds that most Americans are not financially prepared for an emergency.
A survey released Monday by financial data publisher Bankrate.com found that only 24 percent of consumers have the recommended cushion of at least six months’ expenses set aside. The vast majority aren’t ready for contingencies; another 24 percent don’t have any emergency savings at all.
With 6.2 million people out of work for half a year or longer, the results underscore just how unprepared many are at a time when both job security and the economy pose concerns.
“The majority of Americans still have much work to do in building an adequate emergency savings cushion,” said Greg McBride, senior financial analyst for Bankrate.
The survey results are somewhat surprising, he said, in that the high rates of both joblessness and underemployment dating to the 2007-09 recession have driven home the need for emergency savings. Yet the challenges of the economy and job market also have limited the ability to sock money away for unexpected expenses.
Respondents under age 30 and those with annual incomes under $30,000 were the most likely to report having no emergency savings whatsoever. Those likeliest to have six months’ expenses in an emergency fund were higher-income households and people in their 50s and 60s.
Fewer than half of those who participated in the poll had at least three months’ expenses in emergency savings — unchanged from 2007 results.
Discipline is key in building up emergency savings, McBride said.
The takeaway for consumers, he said, should be to start putting more money away with every paycheck. If they build their savings by paying themselves first via automatic deposit, they will gradually move closer to the six-month savings level and also force themselves to spend less.
Among other survey findings:
- Feelings of financial security, as measured by Bankrate’s monthly Financial Security Index, declined slightly to 97.8 in June from 98.5 in May. Any reading under 100 signifies how much less financially secure people are feeling than a year ago.
- About 26 percent said they were more comfortable with their debt compared with a year ago and 19 percent felt less comfortable, the lowest figure since Bankrate began the monthly polls last December.
Results were based on a telephone survey with 1,006 adults conducted June 2-5 by Princeton Survey Research Associates International. The margin of error was plus or minus 4 percent.

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 12:14pmWe you wonderful people come up with a solution for an apartment dweller to have more than a couple months worth of stored foodstuffs, you let me know.
Report Post »I went from a house to an apartment in order to cut my monthly expenses in half, but now there is no practical way to maintain this 10-year food plan you are speaking of Susan, much less 6-months. I have enough to shelter in place for 90-days (at 2500 calories a day), and beyond that I will have to rely skills I have learned over the decades.
Financially I have tanked over the last three years, and I am trying to rebuild… but it ain’t happening any time soon.
So all of you who have prepared so well, and feel the need to bash people who haven’t… how about being a little more charitable with your advice instead of telling people how terrible it will be for them.

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 12:21pmGet the Cheaper Than Dirt catalog. You can purchase 6 months wort of freeze dried food with a 25 year life for about 200. You can also outfit yourself with the essential equipment for a few hundred more.

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 12:24pmNot knowing your financial condition makes it hard to help you. If you have the money then you can rent a storage unit near where you live. Units are protected and you can get to your food as needed.
Report Post »Uncle Sammy
Posted on June 20, 2011 at 12:38pm#1 – how about being a bit more charitable to those from whom you are seeking advice? That said, look at the walls in your apartment. Undoubtedly, there are several walls which have little or nothing in front of them.. perhaps only used to define a hallway or support pictures. You can reasonably use that space; up to 1 foot away from the wall, without impeding passage. You can easily stack supplies neatly against your unused wall and if needed, cover the stash with a decorative rug or even a blanket. Don‘t say there isn’t one. There is. If all else fails, use the space under your bed. You can also use floor supported ceiling storage. Since few people are anywhere near 7 foot tall, there is a minimum of something over 1 foot of wasted space at ceiling level. You could easily and cheaply build a “canopy” over your bed and make your stash virtually invisible stored above it. Just because you live in an apartment, does not mean that you do not have options. If the aesthetic value of your apartment is more important than having food storage; well, that really isn’t my issue; it’s yours.
Report Post »roseblood
Posted on June 20, 2011 at 12:45pm@UPSTATENY – I have seen that stuff, and all I can say is you have to be able to tolerate what you have stored. It‘s worthless if you can’t stomach it. What I have right now takes up about 30 cu. ft. of space. I have the essential equipment I need, and then some… but truly being self-sustaining is not feasible in an apartment.
@Sam Brown – I have storage, but it’s not readily accessible. However, any storage unit is only as protected as the lock and obscurity under when you keep the contents. I can speak with certainty on a few storage area owners who have no problem going through units if something happens. Only that which I can defend is truly secure.
My financial situation is private, but I will share this much: I put out nearly 30% of my income in debt payments for non-luxury items. Thankfully, however, I am now single and I don’t have to worry about taking care of others when it comes down to it.

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 11:37amTexas Grasshopper – That is “partially” true. I don’t understand all the specifics, but as of July 15; over the counter futures trading in gold / silver ( and soon, other commodities) will not be allowed. As I understand it, this affects only over the counter trades, not brokerage trades ( your online account ). It also only affects contracts which have no requirement for physical delivery. Again, I don’t have all the specifics, but this should answer your basic question.
Regarding paying off your debts; debt free is good. But pay yourself first. If you don’t have some savings put away that needs to be top priority.
Regarding prepping… don‘t forget to stock up on the things we don’t really think about too often. Feminine hygiene products, first aide stuff ( including a suture kit; a sliced open foot or hand without a doctor available could easily kill you ), don’t forget vitamins…

Dear Streetrodder, I hope that you really dont believe that. You are sadly underestimating a select group of the population, which can be quite deadly on your behalf. You really need to think about it on a bit deeper level. People who go all out and stockpile everything so that they dont die, are CERTAINLY stockpiling weapons and ammo for the SAME REASON: TO SURVIVE. These will be the FIRST people who blow your head off just for getting too close to their house. And then they work you into their garden for next year’s tomatoes. Oh…and they keep your “cheaper than dirt” gun also.
Are we getting the picture now? Go stock up. Otherwise you will be tempted to test your theory and will die, trying. Only trying to help ya, dear. Being dead is not a “them only” thing. Go get a hammer and smash yourself on the hand — focus on the pain. You really need to wake up.

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 10:15amMany Americans may not have an emergency fund set up but they certainly “do” have a big screen tv (perhaps two), cable tv, internet, smartphones, two or three cars and several other luxuries, not to mention the maxed-out credit cards in their pocketbooks.

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 10:42amLooks like I buck the trend. Under age 30, have 6 months expense stashed away. If I could, I would pay my entire year’s rent as soon as I move into my new apartment. Oh well.
The way I see it, it must be toughest for:

The big cities will burn to the ground and I believe millions will die in riots and of hunger because they did not prepare. Most Americans are fiddling as Rome burns. They will soon see the fire and see they are the weenies and marshmallows in the weenie and marshmallow roast. Fools…
I have had several people laugh at me because they found out I am prepared. They will also find out the ark door is closed to those who mocked when the SHTF. Unless they wake up, they will be statistics…How about you? Yea, I know, you are a fool too….

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 11:19amHey Guys…
Listen up….this is one thing that MOST people will fail to take into consideration until after 6 months has grown into a year and they are eating on a poor diet of carbohydrates only…
GET MULTIVITAMINS — Approx 3-4 years per person. This will be the slow creep of death, no how much you feel that you are prepared. Your body will slowly start breaking down, from long durations of lack of essential vitamins and minerals. Remember those wraggly, skinny people in tattered clothes that you saw in pictures toward the end of the first Depression? Do you want to look like that?
Stock on Vitamins this week…pack your closets…you are going to need them, on the decade-long diet that you and your family are going to face.
Hope that serves as a good “Thought for the day”, for all you Blazers.

Posted on June 20, 2011 at 1:05pmNothing like a weiner measuring contest with the now en vogue SHTFers. Please resist the urge to taunt/peacock and be constructive.
One thing I would recommend that the peacockers rarely mention is: move. If you can afford it, move to a place that will not be full of civil unrest and looters. If you can find a farmhouse/farm to rent or buy this will help you get started on harvesting your own heirloom seeds, stocking firewood and owning animals. Moving is even better than a bug out plan if it is possible for you. Also, renewable supplies are a better option for you than using storage only(eggs, milk, meat, feed grain; all raised or grown by you).
Peacockers, close your feathers and actually contribute.

We own two cars; I have no debt, but dh has student loan debt. Some of my income is earned in Euro and Pounds. We have food and a small amount of silver.
Nothing is stable except God; when the world collapses, cash in the bank is going to be worthless. I do have some skills that will be useful in a more primitive society, and have friends with complimentary skills. More important than a few dollars in the bank is the mindset that tough times are coming, getting as healthy as possible now, and learn skills that can be useful no matter what happens.
