Are You Subsidizing Media Matters’ War on Fox News?

Could you be subsidizing a declared war on Fox News?

That question may sound absurd at first, but according to a former lawyer in the administration of the elder George Bush, the answer is yes.

Media Matters, the far-left website that has become a mouthpiece for the Democratic party, currently enjoys tax-exempt status. It’s also declared a war on Fox News, working hard to discredit and attack cable’s most popular news channel. That, says C. Boyden Gray, violates the rules behind receiving tax-free donations. In an op-ed in the Washington Times this week, Gray explains his argument:

MMA’s activities should disallow its tax-exempt status in two fundamental ways. First, IRS rulings make clear that attacks on individuals, statement of positions that are unsupported by facts and use of inflammatory language and other distortions will cost an organization its tax-free status. Second, in declaring “guerrilla warfare” on Fox as the “leader” and “mouthpiece” of the Republican Party and in developing a sophisticated Democratic-leaning media training boot camp, MMA has transformed itself into an aggressive advocate for Democratic and progressive causes and thus produced a second deviation from exempt educational activities.

According to Gray, Media Matters’s tax-exempt status represents “a form of government support for activities that clearly do not merit tax-exempt status and that as a result infringe on Fox News’ First Amendment rights.”

In an interview with Bill O’Reilly last night, Gray explained more:

So what kind of work are you subsidizing? For starters, it’s the dramatic anti-Fox rhetoric and headlines the site puts out on a daily basis:

Are You Subsidizing Media Matters War on Fox News? But that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. What else is the group up to? Well, it loves attacking conservative hosts such as Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. It devotes time every day to monitoring both, cutting and putting up clips it feels are gotcha moments. For example, this week the group published a clip of Limbaugh seemingly comparing Obama to Hitler:

The Huffington Post picked up the piece and overtly drew up the supposed comparison. But a close listen of the audio reveals Limbaugh wasn’t calling Obama Hitler, but rather talking about Obama’s generals, pointing out that they did something similar to Hitler’s generals — mainly tried to stand up to their commander-in-chief.

And finally, just in case you might have thought that Media Matters is an equal-opportunity critic, you’re right. In part. As The Atlantic pointed out this week (via Mediaite), when CNN anchor Ed Henry decided to jump networks to Fox he was immediately targeted by Media Matters (whereas before he was praised):

That was fast. Hours after Ed Henry announced his move from CNN to Fox News as chief White House correspondent, the liberal media watchdog Media Matters has begun painting him as a right-wing nut job. The treatment is par for the course in the world of partisan watchdog groups (we’d expect the same from its conservative archival Newsbusters if a CNN anchor moved to MSNBC). But the group’s rushed denunciation of Henry is a little silly considering the group’s only other articles about Henry this year credit the then-CNN correspondent for debunking Republican Darell Issa’s “false claim” that the stimulus “didn’t create any jobs” and criticizing President Obama’s critics for spreading a “myth” about the president’s India trip costing $200 million.

Is there really any doubt what the group’s agenda is? And if not, should it continue to get a tax break?

“No one would deny anybody the right to use his own or other private funds to criticize media coverage,” Gray writes in the Times. “But equally no one would argue that it would be appropriate for Congress to provide taxpayer funds to organizations for the purpose of financing attacks on free speech. Yet that is the effect of allowing tax deductions for such attacks.”

Media matters is a joke. They have approx. 10 people that are “allowed” to comment. All comments are rigidly screened, and if you show any conservativism in your view, you will be banned. I know this because it happened to me. Freedom of speech does not exist in George Soros’ world. It is pathetic.

A simple matter of filing a brief or complaint and they will then loose there status; remember a similar situation involving a conservative group that lost their status because of a complaint. If Media Matters doesn’t loose there status, then that conservative group ought to sue for their status to be returned to them. :)

Once I found out Glenn Beck was leaving I grew weary of Fox News… especially listening to the liberals like Allan Combes and others. I realize that they want to get both sides.. but personally I don’t want to hear them. I do agree though that they are the best news on tv.. I hope these woes are fixed for them. But personally I no longer watch any tv, it all sucks. I am anxiously waiting for GBTV!!

As far as Glenn goes, I will be watching GBTV and look forward to it….when I think I’ve missed something someplace, I have plenty of DVR episodes to reflect back on….and Cassandra, you are so right, I have never read so many books in my life and my list keeps growing….Any troll on this site should perhaps look for some history books, original sources and maybe even pray (if they know how) for some common sense.

I‘m expanding my network and talking to more people every day about the nation’s state of affairs and have even begun printing out direct information regarding things like Agenda 21 and the recent executive order regarding rural communities…..HEY TROLLS…DO YOU KNOW WHAT AN EXECUTIVE ORDER IS?

There is no human being lower than one who would willing support a man who thinks he is god. Soros’s statement to that effect put him in some pretty regressive company, Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Koresch, Jones, and Mao. All men I’ve no inclination to emulate in any way.
Media Matters, another of Soros 1500 world wide spider web of open society, UN agenda 21 driven so called philanthropies is just spittle from a pigs behind. What it should be named is propaganda 1.
Tax exempt my backside, this and a recent announcement of the socialist superPac, house PAC another recipient of lagress from the manure spigot of Soros’s open attempts to manipulated American politics for his own self-serving greedy ambitions of world domination and the subservience of all he sees. But God who sees the end from the beginning, He knows the plans Soros has, and they shall not prosper forever. Nor shall those who are truly Gods remain unaided by the hand of God, for Gods arm is not short that He can’t reach them.

For the newsbusters detractors – Newsbusters does not support any party or candidate for office – they cannot accept certain advertising because of their parent company’s 501c3 status (MRC)

On the other hand, Media Matters DOES support specific candidates and a specific party, and is now running a “boot camp” to teach others how to attack other parties and candidates.

So, NO, newsbusters IS NOT the same as media matters. One points out media bias anyplace it finds it – the other has stated publicly that it has a specific mission to attack certain people and certain companies, to support certain candidates and the socialist “democrat” party.

      Nice try, though… NOT !

Oh, and even if you DO come up with a conservative 501c3 that illegally acts as the lapdog and media attack dog of particular candidate and party, that would STILL not excuse media matters.
One person/group doing wrong does not justify that behavior from another.
That’s why you find so little support for Bush II on here, he did some of the same socialist stuff that obama has done – just NOWHERE NEARLY AS MUCH!

@ sleazyhippo there is nothing wrong with people giving money voluntarily to a cause that they believe in. What is wrong here is Americans tax dollars from unknowing conservatives going to a tax exempt organization that attacks conservatives while receiving their tax dollars, is this not what the story is saying? If tax dollars were being used unknowingly to trash liberals and those dollars came from liberals it would also be wrong as I am not a hypocrite. Wrong is wrong.

Boden Grary says, “MMA’s activities should disallow its tax-exempt status in two fundamental ways. First, IRS rulings make clear that attacks on individuals, statement of positions that are unsupported by facts and use of inflammatory language and other distortions will cost an organization its tax-free status.”

That’s an odd accusation given that what Media Matters does is reference sources that contradict attacks on liberals. That’s what Media Matters does, contradict statements by FOX and other similiar outlets with facts, referencing sources.

The only thing I see here is the strategy that when accused of something reverse the logic and say your opponent of doing exactly what you are doing.

My proof? How many statements are made on FOX by anyone, straight news or opinion commentators, that are postive toward President Obama. Answer: none. For Christ’s sake if he takes his wife to dinner, or gets a dog for his kids that’s criticized. FOX is a 24/7 attack on Obama something that can be proven statistically in court.

Challenging MediaMatters in court will fail and FOX knows it. But they’ve got deeper pockets. That’s the only take-away from the stupidity.

Yep time for an IRS visit!

Attorney Gray: “Taxpayers’ subsidization of war on Fox News”

Remember the jihad the libs launched against Newt’s 501(c)(3) school? The court eventually ruled it was okay because it was about real political education.

But corrupt Media Matters is violating 501(c)(3) exemption by partisan political attacks on FoxNews. The case is pretty clear: MMFA Honcho, Brock declared “a war on Fox,” in an all out effort “to disrupt [Rupert Murdoch‘s] commercial interests.” Sound apolitical to y’all? What about tortious interference with contracts? Hmm?

Soros’ Fecal Matters operation is just like the conservative American Campaign Academy, which the IRS denied tax-exempt status in 1989.

I wonder how much George “Spooky Dude” Soros will hafta reduce Brock & Boehlert’s $300,000 salaries after the IRS visit? Don’t worry, Eric; I’m pretty sure you will find some nice paper-hat-related job, commensurate with your limited talent.

Only to be repeatedly censored by the moderators. You can however look these transgressions up yourself (if you truly wish to seek the truth), simply Google “fox lies” or “fox misleads”, either will give you thousands of examples. You could perform the same searches on YouTube with the same results. All the evidence is there to be had, should you decide to cut your own “puppet strings” and stop being manipulated.
