Are Your Kids Reading Reddit.com & Should You be Worried?

There really aren’t flashy graphics or large marketing campaigns to drive traffic. You can‘t play games or write on someone’s “wall.” But Reddit.com is still one of the internet’s most popular sites with over a billion pageviews a month. It’s part news aggregator part message board, and it’s driven by viewer-posted content. Innocent enough. Until you realize it also features porn.

Are Your Kids Reading Reddit.com & Should You be Worried?

Front page of Reddit.com

“The news aggregator is a great startup success story. It’s also a great community site that often bands together in support of worthy causes. It’s also a live interview site: Politicians go on Reddit to answer questions from the community,” Business Insider (BI) reports. “But Reddit also has a seedy side that most people aren’t aware of.”

That “seedy side” is found on user-created pages. See, the site allows users to make sub-pages centered around whatever topics peak their interest. And in this world, those interests include porn, “jailbait,“ and ”ni**ers.” BI explains:

These sub-reddits are known by “r/name” because their URLs are reddit.com/r/name. And the Internet being the Internet, the light moderation leads to some stuff that plenty of people would consider awful.

Examples include:

  • r/porn: Self-explanatory, and full of links to explicit porn. When we visited, the frontpage included a link to a hardcore pornographic image of Traci Lords, the notorious underage pornstar of the 80s, which is technically illegal.
  • r/jailbait: in internet slang, jailbait refers to pictures of underage girls that are legal but still sexually suggestive in some ways (think pictures on the beach, etc).
  • r/n—ers: this is perhaps the most offensive of the lot. It’s mostly full of links to news stories and other items with commentary that can only be described as racist. For example, a link to a story about scientific genetic research is described as: “‘Equal powers of reason’ shared across racial groups is a delusion. Translation: Blacks be stupid.”

BI has provided screen shots (redacted to a certain point) that capture the graphic nature of some of the pages:

Are Your Kids Reading Reddit.com & Should You be Worried?

One sub-page is called "rape."

Are Your Kids Reading Reddit.com & Should You be Worried?

Another called "jailbait," which isn't porn, rather pics of young girls and guys. It's not technically illegal.

The sub-page “jailbait” features “NON-NUDE pictures and videos of teenage girls and boys who are possibly below the age of consent,” according to the site:

Are Your Kids Reading Reddit.com & Should You be Worried?

But while “jailbait” may not be considered porn, the truth is porn is a large traffic-driver for the site:

According to Alexa, around 9% of search traffic to Reddit comes from porn-related queries. Alexa statistics are probably not accurate because they rely on a toolbar, but they‘re a directional indicator that a significant part of Reddit’s traffic is porn-related. [...]

A Google Trends analysis suggests that porn, while a small part of Reddit’s traffic, is also growing faster than the rest of the site. This means that if Reddit banned porn, their growth would be less impressive.

Reddit hasn’t moved to shut down the sites porn sub-culture. While it does remove illegal content, it generally defends questionable posts on the grounds of free speech, says BI.

Reddit is owned by media giant Condé Nast, which didn‘t respond to BI’s request for comment.

Could it be time to add it to your list of blocked sites? Or, is it just free speech at work?

People, please beware! Any social networking, real or virtual has the potential to be dangerous. Every time you access the www no matter what device you are using your activities are being monitored and or recorded in some way. Yes even here or perhaps most especially sites like this. Ever notice how once you visit some site online even though they give you a grand statement of their privacy policy and even if you delete cookies and such, soon after your mailboxes are rife with associated items. Any parent that allows a minor unsupervised computer or web-enabled cell phone use is not acting responsibly, and under our nanny state frame of mind may soon come under “reckless endangerment laws”. Would you allow your child unlimited freedom to go anywhere, with anyone, at anytime? Probably not. How many more horror stories and heartbreaks
will we have to endure before common sense kicks in? You put them in car-seats, and then make them buckle up. You keep your weapons and other potential harmful items under control. When did you decide that giving them the ability to interact with anyone and everyone was a good idea?

Its trashy sites like this reddit that prove how the left wing brainwash campaign on our children is destroying our AMERICAN way of life. If you want to watch porn go to some third world hell hole where Jesus isn’t LORD with the rest of the sinners. This also proves how incompetent obama is as president. If McCain and Palin won in ‘08 sites like this would be BANNED like they should be. Speech is only free when it is moral and decent, it says so in the constitution. Thats why you can’t yell “FIRE” in a crowded movie theater. I can’t wait for 2012 to start so we can solve the liberal problem once and for all he he…

Let’s start with things you’ll like about me: I’m a gun owning, liberty loving, Republican, Christian, who voted for Sen. McCain. Oh and I’m a US soldier.

There, do I have your attention now? Good.

While this is not meant to be a religious reply, I find your comment “…some third world hell hole where Jesus isn’t LORD with the rest of the sinners” a bit disturbing. Especially from someone who considers themselves a ‘Christian’ since, as we both know, according to Christianity ALL men and women are sinners and no sin is better/worse than another.

I also find it quite odd that you think a Republican would ‘do something’ about these outlets of speech when Reddit was created 6 years ago in the middle of the Bush presidency who, I’m sure you know, was Republican. Your comment about how this single act can somehow prove that President Obama is incompetent baffles me. Of all arguments you could have made you chose this?

Finally, you’re freedom of speech statement. The constitution was drafted to solidify what the newly formed US government could and could not do. It was the first 10 amendments, the Bill of Rights, which gave citizens themselves their first rights in the form of protection from the government. Freedom of speech is a right to all citizens so long as one individual’s freedom does not encroach on another’s. This is clearly shown in nearly all Supreme Court rulings and research. THIS is why you cannot yell ‘Fire’ in a crowded area: your right to do it is not as important as another’s right to safety (think Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness). Somebody who posts pornography, while questionable morally depending on who you are, does absolutely nothing to your freedoms. You’re a hypocrite if you believe that posting pornography is indecent but what the protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church at soldier’s funerals (which burns me to the core) are doing is.

In actuality, people taking part in any free speech helps strengthen your ability to speak freely. It is ultimately the parent’s responsibility to teach their children right from wrong and help them to grow into a productive adult who can go and spread their own ideas through these same methods.

While I’m sure you have already stopped reading this I hope I have informed you on something you obviously knew little about. You’re damn sure not going to get that from Fox OR CNN.

Oh, and I’m a Redditor. Problem?

P.S. I would advise you to take a look at /r/aww to cure your cold heart.

Kingsman has a good point regarding the liberal slant of Reddit. So does Farmerpat42. Yes, it’s liberal, and yes, I think the majority of users are young. Posters get “upvoted” or “downvoted” for what they post, and accumulating that “karma” number can be addictive. Essentially, you’ll be shouted down for expressing a conservative viewpoint. I participated there for a few months until I became overwhelmed by the ignorance and decided it wasn’t worth my time anymore. However, a younger person anxious to be accepted might be susceptible to the peer pressure. That would be my concern as a parent if my child made a habit of participating there. If yours does, then at least encourage them to discuss with you the things they read and talk about on the site. The views they’re exposed to and that are accepted as normal on that site need a counterpoint from you so they can form more rational opinions.

I have a computer in the living room. It is called a home theater computer. I like for other reasons not having anything to do with making sure my kids are staying away from filthy, explicit content. We ripped some of our DVD collection to the PC, it gives a second PC to use when my wife has control of the computer desk (also out in the open where we can see it), and I must admit that some MMORPGs look sweet on the HD television.

Chances are that my kids will grow up knowing a lot about computers eventually. I built that home theater computer and I am working on my own business as a system builder nights and weekends. So at some point, I know I will have to focus on teaching my kids personal responsibility on the internet. In order to teach them responsibility on the internet though, I first must teach them personal responsibility in life. Not sure how well I am doing, but I will be monitoring home network when the kids get older. Oldest is currently five, and he’s just showing interest in the Wii — as in up to this point if he wanted to be entertained by a video game he would bring the game and controller to myself or my wife and ask us to play it for his enjoyment (like an interactive movie of sorts). Now he’s actually interested in playing the games for himself. Wonder how he’ll react though since he loves LEGOs when he finds out that his dad (me) has secretly stashed two full plastic bins of LEGOs from my teenage years and young adult life in the closets…. I might be into IT, but I have no desire to rush my kids into the digital age. My favorite toys to give them have no batteries — of course that is also the problem with the noisy toys is you cannot turn off a child’s “real” piano xylophone where the digital ones you can just turn it off (or remove the batteries when the kids learn how to turn it on — and my kids already know all about on/off switches too).

When I was young, I bought into the “Population Explosion” propaganda that was prevalent at the time, and as a result made the decision to not procreate in order to “save the planet” (this was before the eugenics of planned parenthood was mainstream). Due to medical concerns, it turned out I couldn’t concieve after the age of 30 and I wondered if, when I was old, if I would ever regret my decision. WELL I”LL TELL YA….. with what our society has turned into (a filthy toilet run by greedy thugs and corrupt power hungry politicians) and what the young people have to look forward to (slavery, debt, and war over diminishing resources) I am glad I have no children and grandchildren to worry about. I’d argue that the left-slant to reddit is due to it‘s ’youthful’ nature. The same could probably be said of any of the ‘real’* social networking sites because they‘re full of brainwashed youth that think it’s OK to bash morality.

*Reddit is just a gigantic forum which allows users to post on the front page (much like the blaze if everyone was allowed to populate the front page, but with a few more catergories). Comparing it to Facebook is harsh in my opinion.

Each time a useful web site goes online, you can count on porn spam being close behind. The publishers of these websites need to monitor and clean up the porn which can be increasingly difficult once millions of hits and accounts stream in. It’s the First Amendment being rubbed in our face yet again.

I believe in having parental controls, but that is only part of the solution. The other part is
teaching your children why these sites are bad. Once a child starts school, a parent loses a
little part of them. Each year a child grows, is another part a parent loses. The goal is when the
child has graduated high school, The parent can with confidence had over the reins of life to that
child. School alone cannot due that. Being involved with your child while they are you will pay off more then any other investment in life.

I looked at my step-granddaughter’s FB page and was both amazed by and disappointed in how shallow her mind is. She graduated from high school last year.

My granddaughter is a straight-A student who graduates this year. She enjoys history, genealogy, and other topics besides party-party-party, much to my relief! She has had to assume responsibilities that children her age should not have had to take on, but those responsibilities have also opened her eyes to a lot of things that the step-granddaughter has no clue about. And, she’s a conservative!

The grandsons are still too young to understand politics.

      @showtime

Don’t let someones facebook page cloud your view of them. What people put on facebook isn’t barley represetitive of themselves. If you’re not versed if facebook, taking anything you see there at face value it any easy mistake to make.

Facebook is more of a performance than real interaction. When something is posted on facebook, you either have to purposely restrict it to a certain subset of people, and the default is to broadcast it to (at least) every “friend” your account has. It turns discussions on facebook into the least common denominator quickly. That usually means upbeat, mildly interesting, shallow remarks. When my best friend was going though a breakup, the most he ever posted of facebook were a handful of passive aggressive things that even I had a hard time understanding even though we were roommates and he had already told me about it offline. The website also hinders real discussion (at least, for facebook discussions in public), with short character limits on posts, no real threading, and a fast churn rate, even if someone does start a interesting discussion it is lost into the abyss very quickly.

Basically, facebook’s design and social pressures (amplified by the design) mean you wind up with a bunch of trite posts. Those of us using it know this and rely on other mediums for other conversations, but as an outsider I warn you: don’t assume someones presense on facebook is representative of them in the least.

A curious kid will find a way to find things out no matter what. I think that the more a child is restricted, the more he/she will want to know things, do things… of course, a child should have limits on their actions, but you can’t sheild them from knowing everything. If a kid wants to peek, he will probably be disgusted by what he sees/feel guilty and not return to the site.

Parental controls can have the effect of teaching kids to go behind their parent’s back to view banned images. I teach my kids that the internet is full of graphic images from war zones that no child should ever view. They’re too young to explain pornography but that day is rapidly approaching. If they are interested in porn then you should probably be having the “talk” with them instead of hiding what human sexuality is. Also, there is nothing you can do about the internet. It exists and it is here to stay until we invent something more important. Never have we been able to communicate with people instantly across the world. The internet is freeing people from tyranny and uniting people all across the world. Reddit is a very well intentioned community with the main focus of informing and uniting people. Join the userbase and participate in the community. You don’t have to look at porn because the good people of Reddit have developed a content bar for your main page.

      Excellent understanding of the concept.
We need to totally control what our children, and the rest of America see, only in this way can we present those things that we know are right.
It has to start in the home, but we must ensure that we bend our educational system to this manner of thinking as well.
Blocking sites that may spark free and creative thinking in our children is not enough, and does no good if they go off to some liberal university.
We must be vigilant. We need some sold re-education of many of our societies educators.

I cannot believe this. There is a comment here saying that America (and human kind for that matter) would be happier if we did not have the internet because we lived fine without it before. We lived fine without the cotton gin. We lived fine without the Ford automobile. We lived fine without any modern technology. We lived fine with spears and crude hammers and tiger skins. Why human kind lived just peachy without fire. But where are we now? We are a strong species and have invented a great many things, including this fine thing called the internet.

Now, for those of you who do not know what the internet is, I will give a quick summery of this horrible contraption (in a non-technical fashion, layman’s terms). The internet is a wide system which allows information to be transferred extremely quickly between systems. This network caries huge sums of data and knowledge to anyone who is connected. Think of being able to to go the library without having to walk there, that is just one function of the internet. Think of being able to contact a friend in a country on the other side of the world, that is another function of the internet. The world depends on this network and it has bettered us as a whole. It is a monument to humankind and we should be proud that many of our American citizens helped to create this. People credit Al Gore for this, but keep in mind, he’s an American too.

But maybe you’re right. Let’s turn off this horrible thing. Forget technology. Let’s just get rid of all the smut in the world by turning off the most prominent invention of human kind which allows us all to go about our daily lives and read about news from 30 different news papers and help the sciences punish research for all to see. Let us forget about the stock market and communication. Let us forget about all of this and live in the dark ages, where we can really look after our kids.

@ meddlehead The problem is that the parents aren’t thinking or being parents. This is true all over the country.

If your not concerned with what your kid is viewing on the internet, and not checking up on them, then you are part of the problem. That’s freedom of speech for ya.

I agree free speech. teach your children and monitor computer usage. Just like television should be monitored. My grandkids do not use the computer at our house. We do things outside….their parents do the same as well. This device as a tool for all under the age of consent. Not for entertainment.

Have no fear – the “Nanny Staters” will have a new series of laws to take the place of parents. These people just can‘t help sticking their nose in other people’s business.

@STOIC ONE – great intensions but my parents did the same thing with my nephew (not allowed on their computer, kept him busy doing other things) however my dad’s computer crashed and the repair shop found adaware & malware installed in his computer by porn sites. My nephew (now 23) finally ‘fest up to serfing porn sites on his grandfather’s computer.

The bottom line is if WE as parents/grandparents fail to teach the younger generations that porn is sick and twisted and is an abomination of the human body, these tender young minds will be warped and damaged forever.

It’s been proven that when men watch porn, the endorphine levels in their blood stream rise almost to a point as high as if they’ve just had a couple “lines” of cocaine. Almost 100% of all male sex offenders and over 90% of gay men admit their first experiences were viewing porn as young boys.

      THANKS BARACK!

I have educated my children well, I also have software on their PC’s that tells me where they go and what they do. If you don’t have access to that kind of software then get a router and you can control the sites they can go to from there. Communicate with your children, treat them with respect and you’ll get respect in return then you can trust them.

I‘m disappointed I can’t reply to other posters comments. What kind of backwards place is this? No real discussion is taking place. Just people shouting their opinions into the ether. Just how the right likes it. Shout all you want, we’re not listening.

@Savvycowboy – First and foremost, what is the purpose of the (obviously) sarcastic thank you to our President? This article has nothing to do with him!
Second, it’s “adware” not “adaware” and it can be installed in a variety of ways, not solely by porn sites. It can also be installed by malicious downloads (misinformation tends to make you sound – less knowledgeable). Also, I believe by “‘fest” you meant fessed, an alternative to confessed, and “serfing”? Really? It’s surfing, just like on water (misspellings don’t help your credibility either).

But now the really interesting part is where you threw out these statistics! I was very interested to hear about this massive endorphine release! I would love to read that article, it sounds like it would be full of other very interesting information, care to cite that for me? What really interests me though is how the same endorphine release can be triggered by sex.
And finally, you left us with two more meaningless statistics, “Almost 100% of all male sex offenders and over 90% of gay men admit their first experiences were viewing porn as young boys.” By stating these it seems that you extrapolate that (assuming your stats are correct) if nearly 100% of sex offenders viewed porn as young children, then it must also be true that nearly 100% of all young children that view porn will be sex offenders! And you seem to extrapolate the same about homosexuality, both of which are not true.

      Let me summarize this article:
      MORAL PANIC!

      MORAL PANIC!

      MORAL PANIC!

That is all there is to it. If you’re unaware of this kind of stuff on the internet, you’re living under a rock.

Consider Fox news for one minute, now consider FX like a sub reddit. On FX is a show called Archer. This has to be one of the most popular shows on the channel and brings in revenue for Fox. This show like the porn that can be viewed on reddit, which some is not porn by definition, should not be viewed by children. One could consider a subreddit a channel which the tv must be changed to otherwise it is not posted to the main viewing area. So my question is this should children not watch Fox because FX is associated with it?
Also I would like to include that I believe it to be alright for children to watch Fox and FX. These channels have taken the time to decide what material is not appropriate for children and have therefore taken measures such as choosing appropriate broadcast times to keep children from viewing it.
