Arizona‘s secretary of state is threatening to keep President Barack Obama’s name off the November ballot unless the state of Hawaii can verify that Obama’s birth certificate is valid.

Secretary of State Ken Bennett told KFYI Phoenix radio host Mike Broomhead on Thursday he’s not a “birther,” but that he‘s responding to constituent concerns in the wake of Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s investigation into Obama’s long-form birth certificate. Arpaio released findings in March that said he believes the birth certificate the White House released last year is a “computer-generated forgery.”

“I’m not a birther, I believe the president was born in Hawaii — or at least I hope he was,” Bennett said on KFYI. “My responsibility as secretary of state is to make sure the ballots in Arizona are correct and that those people whose names are on the ballot have met the qualifications for the office they are seeking.”

Bennett said that since Arpaio’s investigation, he has received more than 1,200 emails from people requesting he look into the matter. He said Hawaii has a system where they’ll verify a birth certificate in lieu of providing a certified copy of it — and that eight weeks later, state officials have not fulfilled his request.

“They could say yes tomorrow and the whole thing goes away,” Bennett said. “If they can’t say yes to that simple question, then it makes me wonder if we have to take it to another level. And one way or another, we have to have some simple verification that people are qualified for the office if they’re going to be on the ballot here in Arizona.”

The issue gained further attention this week after World Net Daily, which has pursued theories that Obama’s birth certificate is a fake, published an email that Bennett sent to constituents about the matter:

“Because of the importance and profile of the president’s case, and at the request of many constituents, I have gone the extra step of asking the state of Hawaii to verify the facts contained in his birth certificate,” Bennett wrote in response to concerns last month.

[I]f Hawaii can’t or won’t provide verification of the president’s birth certificate, I will not put his name on the ballot,” he wrote.

A Bennett spokesman confirmed to the Phoenix New Times the secretary of state did write the email, saying: “With respect to the story, a constituent requested him to request a verification in lieu of certified copy. They have yet to respond.”

Asked by Broomhead whether he would actually keep Obama off the state’s ballot without the verification, Bennett responded: “It’s possible.”

The United States Senate at the request of many Democrat birthers forced John McCain to produce his birth certificate in 2008 to prove he was a “natural born Citizen.” John McCain produced a birth certificate in 3 DAYS not 3 YEARS, his was not a forged certificate while Obama’s was a forged certificate. John McCain bent over and took it where the light never shines, it was the petroleum jelly the Democrats gave him that turned the tide. McCain should have been a man and demanded the same treatment for his opponent, Obama would have never survived the same investigation that he McCain endured. He immediately produced his birth certificate. Being born in the Canal Zone on a Naval base he was elgible for the presidency. Not certain Arizona’s state constitution, but the requirement for proof of birth and location may be in it and when one’s records are questionable he is likely doing the right thing. Just like the U.S. Constitution requires that anybody running for president be a natural born citizen. When truly questionable he should produce his birth certificate just as McCain did.

      Agreed without question: I’m not an attorney, but certainly hope that Ken Bennett is as much of a man of his word, and keeps his promise just as Jan Brewer, our Governor would do, and Sheriff Joe certainly does at all times. Failing to honor his commitment would lead me to believe that he might then be considered an ENABLER. That we don’t need. If in fact he doesn‘t allow the POTUS’s name on the ballott, I wonder just how many other states would follow suit. And finally, if that happened, who would run against Mitt Romney in Obama’s place?       I’m being partisan? In what way? You and other people on here continually try to define me as some kind of liberal who only wants to further liberal causes. The reason I made that speculation is because I want Obama out of office and think the Republicans going about it the wrong way. So I’d somehow be partisan, by being a liberal(according to your perception of me) and hoping the Republicans can run a better campaign strategy? Simply illogical.

      My fear is that the Republican party is swinging so far to the right that they will abandon any independent voters. Thankfully they avoided nominating Santorum so that is one saving grace for the party.

      Could I be wrong in my speculation? Absolutely, I never said I couldn’t be but that is my view of the political landscape.

      I find it funny you are so eager to try to refute essentially everything I say. What matters is that if someone wants to be POTUS, then BOTH of their parents MUST be citizens in order for them to be a “natural born citizen” of the United States. This is where Obama misses the mark. His mother was a US citizen but his father as a Kenyen was subject to the British throne at that time; he was NOT a US citizen. THEREFORE, Obama is a US citizen but NOT a “natural born citizen” as required by the Constitution, Article II, Section 1. While WMR is doing that he should include in the disclosure his high school records, college transcripts, his Boy Scout Records, a note from his mother and any other piece of paper that speaks to the character and status of the man. With that in place, BHO should then reciprocate. I would love to see a battle over who is the most open about their past. We could then start to discuss which one is more qualified and has a better plan for getting us out of the mess we are in.       “On my watch, our group grew to a dozen student activists and managed to attract crowds of 80 or more to our events. The most successful of these was a campaign to raise awareness of the plight of homosexuals who were beaten by Los Angeles City police officers along the Hollywood strip. I promoted this event with a large banner in the Occidental College quad reading: Anita Byrant: Hitler in Drag? During my junior year, I left Occidental College with the mission to study Marxist economics at England’s University of Sussex in the fall of 1977. By the time I returned to Occidental in the fall of 1978 for my senior year, the Political Awareness Fellowship had morphed into something much bigger, an organization with strong leadership, its own office space and a new name. The group’s president was Gary Chapman, an older student who had served as a Green Beret in Viet Nam. Chapman was a colorful figure who shared stories from his military career including how he was required to take apart and reassemble his rifle in the dark. Under Chapman’s leadership, the group had changed its name to the Democratic Socialist Alliance (DSA). As I recall, he told me “the old name wasn’t letting people know what we stood for.” I agreed. The DSA met weekly and brought in speakers about once a month. Events were advertised by big signs in the campus quad. They believed that the economic stresses of the Carter years meant revolution was still imminent. The election of Reagan was simply a minor set-back in terms of the coming revolution. As I recall, Obama repeatedly used the phrase “When the revolution comes….” In my mind, I remember thinking that Obama was blindly sticking to the simple Marxist theory that had characterized my own views while I was an undergraduate at Occidental College. “There’s going to be a revolution,” Obama said, “we need to be organized and grow the movement.” In Obama’s view, our role must be to educate others so that we might usher in more quickly this inevitable revolution. Since I was a Marxist myself at the time, and had studied variations in Marxist theory, I can state that everything I heard Obama argue that evening was consistent with Marxist philosophy, including the ideas that class struggle was leading to an inevitable revolution and that an elite group of revolutionaries was needed to lead the effort. If he had not been a true Marxist-Leninist, I would have noticed and remembered. I can still, with some degree of ideological precision, identify which students at Occidental College were radicals and which ones were not. I can do the same thing for the Occidental College professors at that time.

      Although I was surprised by Barack Obama’s insistence on his mainstream ideological credentials, I was shocked that my attempts to spread the news about young Obama’s Marxism failed to gain any media traction with reporters, activists, or campaign staffs during the 2008 presidential campaign. The long form birth certificate that you refer to is such an obvious forgery that even 0bama’s attorney in the NJ lawsuit admitted that it was. So, strike that one from your list, The short form that you refer to is a Certificate Of Live Birth and is not an official birth certificate. These are usually requested by parents who happened to have given birth while out of country. It is allowed to be used for school requests and future employment requests. That form alone makes his place of birth suspect. There are videos out on the net where 0bama himself and Moochelle both talk about Kenya as his birth place. So, which of his lies do you prefer to fall for?

    Good god will the stupidity of birthers never end? The state of Hawaii has stated on several occasions that he was born there and have provided both long and short form BC’s but the idiots on the right still want more proof?

    I have done financial work for a high up official in the FBI and within 30 minutes he had my BC, SSN school records and miliraty records . I asked him about Obama and he laughed and said all of that information was obtainied on Obama a long time ago. He also said that if he wasnt eligable that there was no way he would havebeen allowed to even run and laughed at idiot birthers.

      1. Disregarded the list of 264 “unindicted co-conspirators” from the Hioly Land Foundation trial, handed to them on a silver platter by Judge Jorge Solis. that means that all are linked to Hamas. Get it?

      2. Mueller has met with members of CAIR, ISNA and NAIT, all conspirators in the FBI offices and assured them that THEY will have input into FBI training materials in our war on jihad Muslims.

    I don’t get it. This is the President of the US…and no department…no government official…no agency verifies his date and place of birth??? Unbelievable. Hopefully the rest of the states will follow suite if for no other reason than that it should be done. He should be the normal process. How stupid are the people we elect to public office.       Indeed, he is following AZ law as I understand the matter; he has repeatedly sought confirmation from Hawaii, even stating that a simple e-mail confirmation of said birth certificate existing would be enough.

      Here is the caveat I can see coming down the line on the matter; if Obama is not placed on the ballot due to not meeting the qualifications here in AZ he may use it as a means to nullify the elections and bring the matter to the Senate for a determining vote.

      Remember that in 2000 after the SCOTUS was finished with the Bush-Gore matter, there were challenges attempted in the Senate; only a procedural matter of needing both Senators from the same state in agreement kept it from happening.

      This time, if both Senators of a state agree there is challenge to the system; and the vote goes out, then Obama has a second term under the Democratic dominated Senate.

      I have warned of this possibility happening for some time; now it may come about.

      1. The TWO newspapers who printed announcements of his birth did so as a matter of routine vital records lists’ HI health sent out. NOBODY had to ask for them to be printed.

      2. Obama’s sister, Maya, one of the few relatives on his side (vs. Michelle’s) of the family he’s allowed to be seen in public (perhaps the only one, I’m not sure) posted on her FB page in 2010 that Obama had been adopted by his step-father in Indonesia, which would VOID his “natural born” citizenship status. She was THERE. She was the product of the marriage between Lolo Soetero and Ann Dunham.       How does being adopted by someone else eliminated your natural born citizenship status? Where is your authority that that is the case?

      You birthers will jump on anything to support your opinion that he is not eligible. If you were shown video of him being born in HI you would still find another reason to say that he can’t hold the office.

      1. If you are “adopted” by a father in another country, it makes you a citizen of said country. Sure, she was incorrect in the fact that he didn’t lose US citizenship… BUT, it DOES make him a dual citizen which DISQUALIFIES him to be POTUS. Yes, it does. READ IT A WEEP SUCKER, ONE AND DONE.       So I guess you must be an expert on Indonesian law. Point me to the Indonesian statute that says an adopted child takes the citizenship of his father.

      What U.S. law says that someone with dual citizenship cannot be a president?

    It’s about time the vetting process was more thorough. I can only hope the other states will follow suit. There is nothing wrong with asking for verification & all candidates running for public office should be subject to the same scrutiny. No one needs to be singled out in the process. This should have been done all along. I guess better late than never.

Most people on this site seem to be blinded by an irrational hatred for President Obama. It’s all about singling him out for special treatment, based on an insistence that he’s not one of us, not a real American. Sorry, but there are flat out racist undertones to this mindset.
