Arizona Congressman Linked to ‘Republicans Hate Latinos’ Speech

Audio from Department of Labor representative Dolores Huerta’s speech praising Venezualan dictator Hugo Chavez and saying “Republicans hate Latinos,” reveals that Huerta’s appearance seems to have been supported by Congressman Raul M. Grijalva (D-AZ). A representative from Grijalva’s office attended and “brought” Huerta to the Aprill 2006 speech, which addressed students at Tucson High Magnet School.
“I would … like to thank … our representative from Congressman Raul Grijalva’s office, Reuben Reyes; thank you for bringing Dolores here and talking to our students,” Sean Arce says during Huerta’s introduction. Arce is identified in the audio as a faculty member.
Huerta’s appearance garnered state and national media attention. One student, Mon-yee Fung, even appeared in front of state legislators to talk about the event, after Huerta’s comments made her uncomfortable but she was not allowed to leave. “I got up a second time and I said, ‘Really, I want to go to another class,” she told Bill O’Reilly. “I just don’t want to hear this anymore.” Her teacher responded, “No, just sit back down. Listen to this. It’s a really good speech.”
While Fung came forward, there are many more who didn’t. But since Huerta was “brought” by the Congressman’s office, and since a representative was present, impressionable students may have given her statement’s more weight. They gave her a rousing applause at the end.
Dolores Huerta Brought by Rep. Rául Grijalva – Naked Emperor News on TheBlaze.com on Blip
Yet, since the speech, Grijalva continues to be an adamant supporter of Huerta. On August 13 he attended her 80th birthday party and praised her as “the biggest missed opportunity for this nation we’ve ever seen.“ And while he loves Huerta ”to death,“ he thinks ”the rest of America is missing an opportunity to understand and to believe in a person that is much bigger than the rest of us.”
The “missed opportunity” does not keep her political leanings a secret. She is an honorary chair of the Democratic Socialists of America and after praising dictator Chavez in 2006 for his policies in Venezuela, she asked, “why can’t we do that here in the United States?”
When initially approached about Rep. Grijalva’s involvement in the speech, Grijalva’s communications director Adam Sarvana claimed “we had nothing to do with it; and we had no staff there.” He said he called Mr. Reyes (mentioned in the audio) and that Mr. Reyes denied being there. When asked if the Congressman stood behind his statement that Huerta “is the biggest missed opportunity for this nation we’ve ever seen,” he said yes, adding that the Congressman “admirers her.”
But later, after hearing the audio, Sarvana admitted that “we must have had someone there.” Yet he still would not officially confirm attendance by the Congressman’s representative. He agreed to try and “jog” his staff’s memory, but has yet to reply with a comment. Questions, then, remain: Does the Congressman support Huerta’s comments from that day? Why and how was his office involved in the presentation? Does the Congressman‘s involvement give Huerta’s comments more weight? Due to vacation, the Congressman was unavailable for comment.
Initially elected in 2002, Grijalva is currently running for reelection in Arizona’s Seventh Congressional District.
UPDATE:
Sarvana talked with The Blaze this morning and stands by his and Reyes‘s claims that no representative of Congressman Grijalva’s office was present at Huerta’s speech. Furthermore, Sarvana said that his office did not have anything to do with arranging or bringing Huerta to the event. The person responsible for that, he said, is Prof. Charles Tatum, former dean of the College of Humanities at the University of Arizona. Reyes passed Huerta’s number on to Tatum, which is why he and the Congressman were thanked during the introduction, according to Sarvana.
Sarvana added that the Congressman “does not agree with what [Huerta] said and never did.” He also doesn’t believe that because the Congressman was mentioned during the introduction students are more likely to believe what was said. “High school students are smart enough to know” not to associate the two, he said.

Political or opinionated speech does not belong in schools, unless there is an opposing view presented as well (ie, a debate). Our kids need to learn to think critically about the issues that they’ll soon face.
Huerta does have a right to say whatever she’d like, despite how vile it is. Just not to a trapped audiance. And Obama has the right to hire whomever he pleases to fill his government. Elections have consequences.
It’s is incumbant upon us to know, once every 2 years, who is running for office. During a presidential election year, we have about 6-8 people who’s backgrounds we need to understand BEFORE we vote for them. Do the research, know who your giving so much power to.
Maybe next time, so many won’t be as surprised by who they supported.

If you can’t teach them at home get involved in what they are learning at school and correct the inaccuracies or lies they are learning. Our children MUST know the true accounts of history, and they must be equipped with the words to defend the truth. It was easier when parents were expected to teach their own children. Don’t give this responsibility up to the public school system. They are, after, the government.

Posted on September 2, 2010 at 1:41pmI think this says a lot about what is going on in this country. We need to wake up and stop all this nonsense from continuing. It isn’t just Obama. Its the entire government on all levels. We, the people, are to blame because WE voted these people in. As long as the same people keep getting re-elected things are going to swing further away from what this great country is all about. None of this surprises me. All the things Glenn talks about and are exposed here, didn’t start last week. They have been happening for generations. Progressives have been slowly eroding what this country is all about. The progressives now just aren’t hiding it any longer. November is the key. If we don’t stop them in November, I am not sure if we will ever be able too. We need to step back and look at every aspect of how our government interacts with the people and who is controlling what. It isn’t enough to restore the free market if the labor unions are out of control. Crime Inc. has to be stopped.

I agree with others that the fix starts with us. If our votes our bought by the candidate with the most money, then we are the problem. Not their money. We are the ones to blame. Why do they spend millions campaigning for our votes? Because it works. If it didn’t work, they wouldn’t spend it. And that appropriations we so claim to despise because of all the pork spending, well, they do it because it works. It gets them votes. If it didn’t work, they wouldn’t do it. Think about it seriously. They don‘t spend time ready their own bills because they don’t have “two days and two lawyers” to understand it. Even though this IS what we pay them to do. If they knew that failure to read the bill would lose them their job and reelection, don’t you think they would read the bills? If we are lucky, we’ll make them pay for the oversight this time. But we are the ones that taught them this habit by reelecting them all those other times even though we knew they were doing wrong by us. And what of the future? Will we hold them responsible then, or will we give them a free pass like we’ve so often done?
As for this stuff about Mexico, if you believe they actually intend to fundamentally transform America into a socialist/marxist/communist nation, then you consider that in reality most of these types of governments are dictatorships (even democratic dictatorships)…. Well, then it makes perfect sense that the elites would want this sort of opinion around. Either they intend to let it happen, or they can sell us the idea easier of “globalizing” and giving up US sovereignty. See, the reality is probably just as true for when the Weather Underground was contemplating what they would have to do once running the country then (which fortunately never happened) as it is now. They will need help running the United States. If they cannot condition our military to the idea of oppressing our own people, then they must be able to have foreign military forces on our soil to keep us under control. Whether Chinese, Mexican, or even the UN. When you believe the best way to save America is to destroy America, there is a whole can of worms you will accept into your bed because you cannot destroy America with just one man (or small solo group like the Weather Underground).

Calling this lady “Evil” is just plain wrong. I do not agree with her view point in any way at all and I don’t like that they force kids to listen to such obviously slighted opinions. Even with that, I still think we can discuss the issue without throwing destructive words around that do nothing to add to the debate. I’m sure this lady believes her cause is a nobel one, but does that make her evil?
If you are a conservative and hope to see the GOP grow it’s base, then you had better chart a different course, because the message that is being sent to Latino’s right now is that the GOP does not welcome them. The Latino population will comprise of about 25% of the US population by the year 2050 by most any demographic study you care to look at, and that is likely conservative. To alienate that large a number of future voters is akin to political suicide. We need to get serious NOW about changing the tone of this debate if we want any chance at being a viable party in the coming decades.

EXPECT the schools to indoctrinate our children. They have been doing it for years and it is only going to get more liberal and dogmatic. I second Shakenblake…. parents need to take a hard look at their children’s educational environment compared to the benefits of homeschooling. The schools indoctrinate, condition our students to follow a “herd mentality” (i.e. lack of personal and critical thinking) and are failing at providing quality education, let alone a safe learning environment. We’re entering our 5th year homeschooling (I come from generations of public educators) and consider it our greatest privilege!! No forced, liberal, anti-American speeches in this school!!
