Arizona Legislature Approves State Gun — The Colt Revolver

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona lawmakers have approved a bill to recognize a Colt revolver as the state’s official firearm.
The measure won final legislative approval before the session adjourned early Wednesday morning and goes to Gov. Jan Brewer.
The House had rejected the bill earlier in the all-night session but later reconsidered its action and passed it.
Connecticut-based Colt had lobbied to have the official status for the company’s Single-Action Army revolver.
Democratic Rep. Albert Hale, of Window Rock, called it an instrument of destruction. He implored lawmakers to respect American Indians who lived in what is now Arizona before it became a U.S. territory and later a state.
Republican Rep. John Kavanagh, of Fountain Hills, says the designation is appropriate for the revolver, because it was widely used during Arizona territorial days.

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 11:06amPersonally, I’d prefer that legislators continued to debate and pass these kinds of laws. There is very little law that ever needed to be made, and what was required was pretty much ironed out about 180 or so years ago. The rest is unnecessary, so in my view, I kind of like that they’d spend more time on these kinds of things.

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 10:56amTo all the looney lefties where evere and whomever you may be.
Yes the Colt is a weapon whose sole purpose is to frighten, wound, or kill what ever, or whomever, is threatening you with harm or attempting to steal your property.
It is one of those arms that the founding fathers acknowledged is the right of the individual to own and carry, and which natural right would never be infringed.
You looney lefties are always crying about equality, well Samuel Colt did more to make that happen than any other human in history.

I used a S&W Model 19 and a Colt Python the first few years on the PD, and the department moved to the semi-auto Beretta 92f. Not much stopping power but a big clip capacity. For the shear enjoyment of shooting, I’ll take the feel and beauty of a S&W or Colt wheel gun any day.

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 1:10pmI know some Texans that won’t be happy about this. They feel that with the history that Colt revolvers have in Texas, that it should have been their state gun. Colt even named a revolver after a famous Texas Ranger, Samuel Walker. Texas Rangers made the Colt name famous going as far back as the early Paterson, and ‘Texas’ model Colts. Colt’s improved designs were inspired by Texans like Walker and they saw heavy use in the Mexican American War and Indian Wars. Some might say that without Texas, Colt might not have been as successful since Texans helped in the inovation and evolution of the Colt revolver and bought the lions share of them to boot!
Report Post »Then too, Sam Colt was born in Connecticut. Although I doubt they care about it and Colt Firearms lobbied for Arizona……..Still some folks won’t be happy!

Report Post »I feel compelled to interject that the Kentucky Long Rifle was actually devoloped in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Daniel Boone (who was born not far from me in Pa) and the other Frontiersman bought their rifles in Pa and carried them west with them. They were developed by German gunsmiths that settled in William Penns original charter lands. They were very accurate and accounted for a large number of British and Hessian officers during the American Revolution in the hands of skilled marksmen and Rangers.

Posted on April 20, 2011 at 3:06pmAnd we’re supposed to ban guns in honor of Indians who lived over 125 years ago? What about the rifles Indians used to attack settlers? Oh that’s right, political correctness only applies to progressive issues. These Dems and their wacky ideas of justice are really looking ridiculous. Too bad they can’t start banning themselves.
Report Post »robin.kevin
Posted on April 20, 2011 at 3:20pmNice bit of history there that I didn’t know. I did however know that Boone used one that he called “tick-licker” and I did also know that they was a large reason why the British were defeated due to being far more accurate then the British military rifles.
However I still think it would be suited well for Kentucky‘s gun since Daniel Boone is associated exploring Kentucky’s wildness, even have a national forest named after him. ;)

Colt makes the 1911…On March 29th, 1911, the Browning-designed, Colt-produced .45 pistol, was selected as the official sidearm of the Armed Forces of U.S.A., and named Model 1911.
Now all gun manufactures build the 1911 frame, originally designed by Browning.
Colt 1911 government model 45 cal is one of the best guns made today!

It’s hard to know which variation of that quote is correct. The sentiment is insightful and remains the same no matter the common variations, however.
