AZ Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Shot in Head at Event: 6 Dead, Including Child and Fed Judge

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle “Gabby” Giffords (D-AZ) was shot in the head outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event Saturday morning. Numerous national news outlets reported earlier she had died, but a doctor said during a press conference Saturday afternoon that she is alive and he expects her to live after undergoing surgery. The most updated reports from the Associated Press say 13 people were injured, while 6 additional people have died, including a 9-year-old girl and a federal judge.
“I’m very optimistic about her recovery.” Dr. Peter Rhee said at an afternoon news conference at University Medical Center in Tucson. “She was shot one time in the head through and through,”
According to the Arizona Republic, the bullet entered one side of her head and exited the other after passing through her brain, Rhee said.

The Hill reports the shooting happened around 10 a.m. local time as Giffords was speaking at an event called “Congress on Your Corner” at a Safeway grocery store in northwest Tucson.
A gunman reportedly ran up and started firing at Giffords as she was talking to constituents, reportedly shooting her in the head at point-blank range. An employee of a nearby business, Jason Pekau, tells CNN that he heard “15 to 20 gunshots.” The man then fled, but was tackled by a bystander and then arrested. Witnesses described him as in his late teens or early 20s.
The Associated Press says the gunman has been identified as Jared Loughner, 22. A source told the news outlet he used a pistol to carry out the attack, and CNN reports the gun as a 9mm Glock 19 with an extended magazine.
Federal law enforcement officials were poring over captured versions of a MySpace page that belonged to Loughner and over Youtube videos published to the Internet weeks ago under an account “Classitup10” and linked to him. The MySpace page, which was removed within minutes of the gunman being identified by U.S. officials, included a mysterious “Goodbye friends” message published hours before the shooting and exhorted his friends to “Please don’t be mad at me.”
His motivation was not immediately known, but Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik described him as mentally unstable and possibly acting with an accomplice. His office said a man possibly associated with the suspect who was near the scene was being sought. The man, who was photographed by a security camera, was described as white with dark hair and 40-45 years old.
The U.S. Capital Police issued a statement telling members of Congress to take “reasonable and prudent precautions regarding their personal security.” The statement also said there is no indication of the Laughner’s motives at this time.
A spokesman for University Medical Center said 18 people have been injured. One person died at the hospital — a 9-year-old child — while five are in critical condition and five more are currently in surgery. That spokesman, a doctor, said he was optimistic the Congresswoman was going to live.
There are conflicting reports from earlier as to how been injured. Local news outlet KOLD — as well as the Associated Press — is reporting that at least 19 total people were injured. Six people have reportedly died so far, with two of those reported dead being an aid of Gifford’s as well as a federal judge. Victims were reportedly taken to two separate hospitals, which may be adding to the confusion.
CNN says six have died and 12 have been injured.
According to AP reports, a 9-year-old girl was murdered and Arizona U.S. Marshall David Gonzales confirmed the death of Federal Judge John Rolls.
Rolls was the chief judge in Arizona, appointed in 1991 by the first President Bush. He became chief judge in 2006.
The aide has been identified as Gabe Zimmerman, the director of community outreach in the congresswoman’s Tuscon office, according to CNN and the Associated Press.
KOLD reports he was put under federal protection by U.S. Marshalls in 2009 after he received death threats in connection with a civil rights case he presided over.
“I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff,” House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said in a statement Saturday. “An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country.”
President Barack Obama issued a statement Saturday morning calling the shooting “an unspeakable tragedy” and saying such “a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society.” At the time of a press conference he hosted later in the afternoon, he said five had died. That number has since been updated.
“It’s not surprising that today Gabby was doing what she always does, listening to the hopes and concerns of her neighbors,” Obama said in a nationally televised news conference. “That is the essence of what our democracy is about.”
“Congresswoman Giffords is a brilliant and courageous Member of Congress, bringing to Washington the views of a new generation of national leaders,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said in a statement. “It is especially tragic that she was attacked as she was meeting with her constituents whom she serves with such dedication and distinction.”
Sarah Palin responded to the tragedy via her Facebook page:
My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today’s tragic shooting in Arizona.
On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.

Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips condemned the shooting, but also expressed concern that the right and the Tea Party movement would be blamed for the incident.
“While we need to take a moment to extend our sympathies to the families of those who died, we cannot allow the hard left to do what it tried to do in 1995 after the Oklahoma City bombing,” he said, according to The Hill.
Before the event, Giffords sent out a tweet encouraging people to come and meet her:
On some issues, Giffords is considered a moderate. For example, she opposed the Washington, D.C. ban on handguns in 2008, and is even the proud owner of a Glock handgun. At the time of the ban controversy, she said she considered gun ownership a constitutional right and an “Arizona tradition.”
“As a gun owner, I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment,” she said in a statement after the Supreme Court struck down the D.C. handgun ban. “In February, I was proud to sign the Amicus Brief in District of Columbia v. Heller asking the Supreme Court to uphold the lower court ruling that overturned the long standing DC gun ban.
“This is a common sense decision that reaffirms the Constitutional right – and Arizona tradition – of owning firearms. I commend the Court for ruling in favor of restoring our right to bear arms.”
This week, she appeared on Fox News proposing a 5 percent pay cut for lawmakers:
“You know, actually as a former Republican, you know, I consider myself someone who is pretty in the middle, I’m a blue dog Democrat, and one that is interested in making sure that our country maintains our prosperity and frankly, our superiority over other countries and that’s where we look at these threat, obviously our defense budget, our level of education,” she said in the interview with Fox.
Giffords was elected to a third term in November, defeating Republican Jesse Kelly. She is married to Navy Capt. Mark Kelly, a NASA astronaut and Desert Storm veteran who is scheduled to lead a space shuttle mission to the International Space Station. They have two children.

Her death is a damn shame, the gunman should be punished to the full extent of the law, and we should all strive to make something good come of Mrs. Giffords’ memory. I pray for her family, employees, and employers, and hope that nothing like this happens again. God bless her soul.

I have no way of verifying that statement. From what I have heard about the shooter he has NO ties to any form of any Tea Party. If the father did say that he needs to be held accountable for such a statment. If he didn’t, ABC owes all the Tea Parties in America an appology (fat chance).

They have ignored all other requests for tightening the border and reducing attacks by illegal aliens so I really don’t know why the shooting of a Democratic representative would make any difference to them. Nonetheless, the people of her district voted her to be their representative again. She voted for policies she knew was bad for Arizon, her opponent let voters know, yet still she somehow got re-elected. I haven’t heard allegations of voter fraud so bowing down to Queen Nancy was what her district admired her for, obviously.
Even still, she could’ve been defeated in the next election. Hopefully, no tea partier or conservative was the trigger man. Not a good idea for Congress to get scared with the Dems still in control of the Senate.

As a person who ownes and shoots guns, this does not suggest to me that I should go out and shoot anyone. Is it a bad idea to run the shooting bit with the Gabby Giffords bit? for sure, but I don’t think any sane person looks at stuff like this and thinks they should go out and kill her.

@BeckIsNuts, what part of the Second Amendment don’t you understand? When an elected official breaks their oath to the Constitution, they remove the means by which citizens can peacefully petition for a redress of grievances.

We don’t know, yet, who did this nor why. What we do know is that the perpetrator is the enemy of all of us, the enemy of our entire society, regardless of political or religious persuasion. The reason why any of us can easily count the political assassinations in our history is because of their rarity.
This act was as un-American as any possible.
My heartfelt prayers go out to those hurt and killed, their families, and all of America. We need to come together in re-affirmation of our commitment to peaceful self-governance or we will all lose.

Rep. Giffords was also on Sarah Palin’s “target list.”
As noted earlier, a gun was dropped at a Giffords event in 2009, and her office was vandalized in March.
All politics aside, a woman was shot and may not make it. Hard to tell whether or not if she did or didn’t die, but holding out hope she didn’t and will recover if not too late.

I do love the Blaze, but since Repubs won control of the House and Obamacare stands to be either repealed or defunded, the left has gotten increasingly violent and malicious. The trolls are now disrupting the flow of conversation/healthy debate, even when they are ignored. They do that by posting away like crazy. I don’t mind dissenting voices, even strong ones, but this trolling run amok should be stopped.
As far as I know, hate speech, instigation to violence and spam unnecessarily disrupt civil conversation and debate. Thus, I would hope that instead of telling me to leave or accusing me of wanting to stifle freedom of speech, other conservatives on this blog would consider calling for some kind of feature/monitoring that stops the blatant, unchecked subversion of thought and conversation caused by trolls on the Blaze.

This heinous tragedy was clearly committed by one or more, emotionally deranged or drugged lunatics, suffering serious mental illness. Judging by your callous cold comment, replete with public knowledge you presume privileged to possess and magnanimously moved to disseminate to less enlightened unfortunates, you reveal disturbing deficiencies in your own questionably quirky mental makeup.

I live on the edge of a vast forest and can hunt to my heart’s content thus stretching our stores out indefinitely. Hope is past. (Sorry Glenn) The only way now is through death and rebirth. Painful rebirth… Well, painful death too… :) The Progressives have ruined it all past repair. At least half of the population is helplessly beyond redemption. Clueless as well. Half of us have become a nation of weak and doe eyed fops. Total reset is the only solution now. It’s coming soon. It will be mistaken for the wrath of God but really, it will be his terrible love which will cull us and save us from ourselves. Will the economy last out the year? Will it limp somehow, somewhat intact into 2012 and then collapse? These are the only questions left.
I have a small business which actually ‘creates’ something of necessity and great intrinsic value. I can operate in an economy of money or in one of barter. I am flexible and creative. That will be the only way to survive in the brave new world which is coming. Good people must survive to rebuild the Republic. Prepare. No one I know of knows the day, month or hour of collapse.
I and mine will quietly watch the dollar burst and cast the whole world into chaos. We will not panic. We have already thought through and discussed all the probable consequences of economic devastation. It won’t be pretty in many, many different ways. It will also be a very dangerous time to live through. But we are ready. Are you?
We won’t need to flee the city because we are already gone from there. We won’t have to go forth and forage, risking death among the desperate panicked masses because everything we’ll need is at our fingertips. There are many like minded folks in my area. We run into each other buying freeze dried food or find ourselves in spontaneous conversation in the Super Market about survival in the coming darkness. More than once I’ve heard “Are you one of us?” Oh yes, I am definitely one of us! We are forming a group to share ideas and skill sets. If necessary we can become an armed camp to defend ourselves. Those who now laugh at us Preppers will later be begging, groveling or killing in desperation to live. They will be lost or not only by the Grace of God.
A great cleansing is coming. Nothing can stop it now. The Republicans’ faint efforts will fall far short. They don’t have fire in the soul like the Tea Partiers do, so their efforts will not be nearly enough to turn the country around and there are just not enough of us in power yet. I don’t think we have the time left to do it either. The Republican leadership comes to the party second hand and so they will fail, no matter what rhetoric they adopt or feints they deploy.
I am ready and accepting of it all now. In fact I am looking forward to the burning of all the dead wood. Bring it on, baby! We didn’t light the fire but we will watch it burn with lust. After the horror there will be space to breathe again… Remember the Freedom we drew into our lungs and lived in as children and young adults? We didn’t realize then how unique, blessed and wonderful it was until it began to fade away- to be stolen from us a pinch at a time. Each generation looses a little more of it. A foul haze has permeated the atmosphere of late. Time for the winds of change to blow it all away! Anything is better than the mess and garbage hole we have dug ourselves into now. When all the fools are either gone or through great suffering have seen the light then a new America and indeed a new world can be born.

These are very dangerous times and we all must become “our brother’s keeper: and look out for one another, no matter if we’re republican or democrat, conservative or liberal. Americas that love their country don’t wish others Americans any harm. We may not all agree in our politics, but we still can live together peacefully. I don’t believe the hooter is “mentally unstable”, he’s just evil. His blogs that were posted on the internet are proof enough that he had an agenda to carry out and knew exactly what he was doing. My worry is, how many others like him are out there somewhere, just waiting for their 30 seconds of notoriety ?
