Arlen Specter Slams GOP ‘Cannibalism’ in Senate Farewell Speech

Republican-turned-Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., used his final Senate floor speech Tuesday to take a less-than-subtle jab at his old party, claiming that conservative Republicans who recently supported tea party challengers over establishment candidates engaged in political cannibalism.

Claiming himself as a centrist, Specter complained that the U.S. Senate has become so politically polarized that it is no longer civil. “In some quarters, compromise has become a dirty word,” Specter said. After serving three decades in the Senate and claiming the title as Pennsylvania’s longest-serving U.S. Senator, Specter lost his bid for re-election to Democratic primary challenger Joe Sestak. Democrats lost the seat, however, after Republican Pat Toomey defeated Sestak during November’s general election.

Specter also complained that some GOP senators had helped tea party challengers beat incumbent Republicans such as Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, and Rep. Mike Castle, D-Del.

“Eating or defeating your own is a form of sophisticated cannibalism,” Specter said.

The outgoing veteran senator also praised the write-in re-election of Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski over tea party challenger Joe Miller as a “counter” to “right-wing extremists.”

CBS also noted that while other departing senators have given goodbye speeches this month, Specter’s departing words “offered a sharp and sometimes angry” tone.

In the end, the longtime senator pleaded for his legislative colleagues to return to a state of civility, what he calls a “state of mind” that members must strive for.  “This polarization will make civility in the next Congress more difficult – and more necessary – than ever,” he said.

Specter‘s parting shots didn’t end with Republicans, however.  He also took time to criticize Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito for “eroding the constitutional mandate of separation of powers.

“The Supreme Court has been eating Congress’ lunch by invalidating legislation with judicial activism after nominees commit under oath in confirmation proceedings to respect congressional fact finding and precedents,” said Specter.

“Ignoring a massive congressional record and reversing recent decisions, Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito repudiated their confirmation testimony given under oath and provided the key votes to permit corporations and unions to secretly pay for political advertising – thus effectively undermining the basic Democratic principle of the power of one person, one vote,” he said. “Chief Justice Roberts promised to just call balls and strikes and then he moved the bases.”

You know I’d actually welcome this country run by the Tea party. Federal government cut down to a bare skeleton. I’m sure jobs will be sprouting up all over the place, like weeds after a good rain storm. If you can’t get a job then you have no one to blame but yourself for not learning a marketable skill.

I wonder if our foreign enemies will take advantage of a less powerful federal government though?

I don‘t mind paying zero taxes but it’s not a big deal to me. I pay 5 times more in health insurance than I do in federal income tax. I would welcome the de-licensing of the health professions, (in fact let’s de-license everything). If you want to see an MD and get a multithousand dollar work up, go right ahead. I’d like the freedom to see a foreign trained “Dr.” for a lot less.

They’re taking advantage of this one, it’s certainly NOT cutting GVT size!?!?!…. “Foreign enemies”… take advantage of weakness, not size. Size != strength or power. Size can actually weaken government, it doesn’t necessarily make it any stronger. Reason and morality make it stronger.

Most if not all of your premises are falsely arranged… I would re-check those and try again.

Government doesn’t save you anything, it usually just wants to control you or the situation.

    Dear former Senator Spector –

    Here’s a blinding flash of the obvious…

After serving three decades in the Senate and claiming the title as Pennsylvania’s longest-serving U.S. Senator, Specter lost his bid for re-election to Democratic primary challenger Joe Sestak. Democrats lost the seat, however, after Republican Pat Toomey defeated Sestak during November’s general election.

Just in case you didn’t quite catch that, you didn’t lose the general election to a Republican or a Tea Party member, you lost the DEMOCRATIC Primary. Not to put too fine a point on it, but that’s your party, remember? That’s the one you switched to back in the day. The Republicans had NOTHING to DO with your electoral loss.

In the immortal words of Ricky Riccardo “Somebody got some ‘splaining to do”, but let me assure you, it isn’t the Republicans or the Tea Party.

Taquoshi……..you make an outstanding point. Why is he so angry at The Tea Party and Republicans? He couldn’t even win his own primary.

Too many incumbents are still there……2012 is just around the corner for those guys to start whining like Specter. WE THE PEOPLE can take our country back. Term limits have to be passed. Just read his statements again, and you see how incredulous he is about losing his seat…….just another example of how “entitled” these people think they are.

I think you are more right than you know. There seems to be quite a few old time politicians that just don’t get the Tea-Party movement. We shouldn’t waste time worrying about those people, they can fuss all they want while we zoom right past them and work on saving this country.

If you want to have some fun… go to any progressive blog and post something like this: “We in the Tea-Party will fix this country regardless what you progressives do, so either climb aboard or get out of the way.” You will automatically have about 800 people screaming for your head. “Under both CSRS and FERS, Members of Congress are eligible for a pension
at age 62 if they have completed at least five years of service. Members are eligible
for a pension at age 50 if they have completed 20 years of service, or at any age after
completing 25 years of service. The amount of the pension depends on years of
service and the average of the highest three years of salary. By law, the starting
amount of a Member’s retirement annuity may not exceed 80% of his or her final
      salary.
As of October 1, 2006, 413 retired Members of Congress were receiving federal
pensions based fully or in part on their congressional service. Of this number, 290
had retired under CSRS and were receiving an average annual pension of $60,972.
A total of 123 Members had retired with service under both CSRS and FERS or with
service under FERS only. Their average annual pension was $35,952 in 2006.”-excerpt from a government report
Well Arlee, retiring on the pension of about 61k and other benefits and whatever you’ve squirreled away in the refrigerator ice trays over the decades should allow you at least to get by without turning into a cannibal. So don’t go away angry…just go away.

One less liberal, progressive Democrat in the Senate. Republican turned Democrat, Senator Arlen Specter is just one of the older Senators that have occupied a Senate seat too long. His switch from the Republican party to the Democratic party backfired on him. Instead of helping him secure a reelection as a democratic Senator his seat was lost to a Republican. I’m a firm believer that both Congressmen and Senators should be limited to two consecutive terms. More terms than two tend to lead the seat holder to seek more personal benefits than to represent his or her constituency. Good riddance Senator Specter, now you can “retire” with your FULL senatorial salary.

Agreed x 10 This schmuck is the poster boy for term limits and rules that say if you leave your Party for another, there must be a bye-election by the voters. Dont let the door hit you in the ass!

Just shows the absolute necessity for term limits! To call the ever-growing members of the Tea Party movement “right-wing extremists” demonstrates how living in a bubble for 30 years can distort your facts of reality…

The “right-wing extremists” will soon become the majority of the American people; and thank goodness we were able to get rid of such “representatives” as Bob Bennett and Mike Castle!

      We’ve just begun…

That’s OK By his (Specter’s) definition of compromise (IE: Doing deals with the devil) Hitler would have been polarized (and was) by the likes of Dietrich BonHoeffer.

In Hitlers final days he condemned the last of the conspiritors to death. Dietrich died nobly less than a month before the spiteful tyrant took his own life in a vain atempt to escape reality. Little did Hitler know that his greeting party on the other side ironically would be a blanket party of the murdered martyrs of the confessing church.

Careful Specter, change while there is still time!

      Folks,

Don’t you see??? We are bieng out maneuvered and hoodwinked by Dems. They are better organized, funded and have more true believers in thier fold. Look at what they just did. They turned a huge victory in the polls and snookered (or worse) the current Republican leadership to pass everything they wanted. Some comprimise! They got it all!! They must be laughing their heads off. It’s like Lucy and Charlie Brown with the football. The current leadership should resign! We should throw our funding and support to the Tea Party, not to people like Collis, Snowe, Specter, Crist, McConnell. It seems that the Dems eventually manage to corrupt our guys, getting them to fold under the slightest pressure. I wouldn‘t put it past them to even fund these people’s campaigns so they can extract what they need from them when the time comes. So what if Republicans control the house etc if the Dems get them to do their bidding for them, like what just happened with all this lame duck legislation.

This elitist snob does not have a clue. People voting for candidates that say they will govern within the limits of the constitution are now called right wing extremists. You, Specter, are the cancer that has infected D.C. D.C. is the cancer that has infected this country.
We must dismantle the federal government. To this very day, not one thing has happened in congress to reduce the size of government or cut back on it’s spending. The same old s**t.

      MONGO: “Me Mongo.”
      sheriff BART: “Sign, please.”
[Mongo destroys pad signing scratches on it]
sheriff BART [yanks pad away & gives box]: “Thank you.”
[He walks out putting his fingers in his ears]
      MONGO: “Mongo like candy.”

No, Arlen, the People are just removing the cancer in both parties called “Progressivism” . The Republican Party is the one the People chose to move into first as it was the least furthest down the Progressive road to Utopia. Democrats in the minority groups waking up and realizing they are being played by the progressive “elites”, the welfare is just enough to rob ambition, the education just enough to allow them to fill meaningless jobs and not compete with the elites and their children. America is waking up and it is a giant, still.
