Hundreds of gas-filled balloons caught fire during a crowded political rally in Armenia’s capital on Friday, after, authorities believe, someone’s cigarette touched just one of them.
While 140 people were injured, many say it’s a miracle no one was killed.
The Arizona Daily Star elaborates:
The balloons were supposed to be filled with helium but may have instead been filled with methane, said Aghasi Yenokyan, director of the Center for Political and International Studies, a Yerevan-based think tank.
The incident occurred in downtown Republic Square during events organized by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia as part of the parliamentary election campaign.
During the concert, teenagers were holding hundreds of balloons when they suddenly exploded in a huge ball of fire.
[...]
“At first I thought that it was part of the show when I saw a huge halo of fire over the crowd in front of the stage, but then I saw people running and screaming,” said Yelena Manukyan, a 36-year-old office manager. “On some of them, the clothes were burned and they were holding their hands over their heads and faces.”
Fragments of burned balloons flew in all directions over the dense crowd and caused burns to many people, Manukyan said.

Posted on May 6, 2012 at 8:13amWasn’t there a movie staring Peter Faulk as a talk radio host where he always railed against the Armanians? I think it was Armanians. Nope, I just checked…it was Albanians. The movie is Tune in Tomorrow…funny and querky.

Posted on May 6, 2012 at 3:31amthis will become more and more common as helium becomes scarcer. it will be replaced with anhydrous ammonia, methane, or hydrogen.
helium is a non-renewable resource. we HAD a strategic helium reserve but sold it off in the late 90′s. I doubt there is much left of it..

Posted on May 6, 2012 at 4:54amI don’t know why they sold it off, but I bet it had something to do with wacko environmentalists and animal rights wackos complaints about all those balloons being released.

Posted on May 6, 2012 at 9:20amActually, you are more right than one may think. I remember the West Virginia Mountaineers were fond of releasing a great deal of gold and blue balloons into the air as part of their pre- game ritual on any Sat. afternoon. Seems a balloon or two made it to the great Atlantic Ocean and there were great howls of concern that a sea fish may eat it and choke on it— Under pressure from some group,, WVU stopped the practice…

Posted on May 7, 2012 at 3:24amburnteye86 the strategic helium reserve was established back when airships were common military items. they sold it off because at the time we had no airships and didn’t plan on getting any. I doubt environmentalists had much to do with it, it was a pretty straightforward cost-cutting measure, eliminating the cost of maintaining the reserves of a substance the DoD no longer felt it needed.

Posted on May 5, 2012 at 9:26pmLOL ! Only a Armenian “think tank” knew that methane is flammable !
Tomorrow the Armenian University will have a physics class on – How to boil water
“First class try to find some clean water, then get a cooking pot that Americans donated, then – what I’m going to fast – OK I will start over and speaker slower”

Posted on May 5, 2012 at 8:09pmIf they put Methane in Balloons, OMG how bright is it to put a flammable substance which can be set off with static electricity in freaking balloons? Ever rub a balloon on your head and stick it to your shirt? Surely they are not this stupid! But if that’s what happened then apparently they are. I missed where the cigarette detonated the balloons in the article. But sure go ahead and blame smokers for methane, natural gas, and propane for having explosive tendencies with static electricity. I don’t smoke by the way!
