(AP) — An Army officer has ordered a court-martial for a low-ranking intelligence analyst charged in the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history.
Military District of Washington commander Maj. Gen. Michael Linnington on Friday referred all charges against Pfc. Bradley Manning to a general court-martial, the Army said in a statement.
The referral means Manning will stand trial for allegedly giving more than 700,000 secret U.S. documents and classified combat video to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks for publication.
The 24-year-old Crescent, Okla., native faces 22 counts, including aiding the enemy. Manning could be imprisoned for life if convicted of that charge.
A judge yet to be appointed will set the trial date.
Defense lawyers say Manning was clearly a troubled young soldier whom the Army should never have deployed to Iraq or given access to classified material while he was stationed there from late 2009 to mid-2010.
At a preliminary hearing in December, military prosecutors produced evidence that Manning downloaded and electronically transferred to WikiLeaks nearly half a million sensitive battlefield reports from Iraq and Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables, and video of a deadly 2007 Army helicopter attack that WikiLeaks shared with the world and dubbed “Collateral Murder.”
Manning‘s lawyers countered that others had access to Manning’s workplace computers. They say he was in emotional turmoil, partly because he was a gay soldier at a time when homosexuals were barred from serving openly in the U.S. armed forces. The defense also claims Manning’s apparent disregard for security rules during stateside training and his increasingly violent outbursts after deployment were red flags that should have prevented him from having access to classified material. Manning’s lawyers also contend that the material WikiLeaks published did little or no harm to national security.
In the December hearing at Fort Meade, Md., prosecutors also presented excerpts of online chats found on Manning’s personal computer that allegedly document collaboration between him and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
Federal prosecutors in northern Virginia are investigating Assange and others for allegedly facilitating the disclosures.

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 1:53pmIt is amazing how long it took to decide that this PFC should be tried at a General Courts-Martial. My time in Military Intelligence was during Viet Nam. A release of classified material of this magnitude would have resulted in a speeding courts-martial and a life sentence at Leavenworth. I still think the Army made a mistake doing away with the Counterintelligence Corps. One of our jobs was to identify POS’s like this.

Posted on February 6, 2012 at 7:54amNot really. What’s changed is the level of expectation. PFC Manning wasn’t being asked to do anything beyond his capabilities, nor was he doing anything particularly more remarkable than other SIGINT types. Rather, he is a despicable traitor because he gathered data he was not supposed to in order to betray the U.S.; he went out of his way to commit treason in wartime.
Trying to claim that being queer and unhappy are somehow grounds supporting his treason as the Army’s fault – nonsensical.
The Obama administration may be trying to claim that his actions didn’t hurt any Americans, but the damage he caused will never be repaired. It’s not a matter of measuring how much damage he caused as some sort of equivalency; it’s that he consciously committed treason during wartime. He deserves a firing squad, plain & simple.

Posted on February 5, 2012 at 12:35amHaving seen the Army’s judicial system work first hand, I am not surprised that this case will come to trial before the Major Hassan case. Hassan will certainly be tried under a General Court Martial while Manning may only be a Special Court Martial, though maybe General. It did occur in a combat theater during a time of war so under a General Court Martial the penalties are very serious.
I don‘t believe politicians have very much influence on the Army’s Judicial process. In the Manning case I am sure his parents have found a sympathetic Liberal Congress person to “Look Into” the fairness of the process. Not thinking any politician is going to stick their necks out in the Hassan case.

Report Post »Again, I note that your eagerness to slam fellow Blaze posters is not casting you in a very good light. Here is some “logical basis” for Loneranger’s statement:
(1) Bradley Manning is a homosexual (or “gay” as the word has been usurped to refer to 2-3% of the population);
(2) Homosexuals are disproportionately troubled individuals — Manning is a “poster child” for this fact (I assume — at my hazzard, of course — that you understand the meaning of the term “poster child”);
(3) This troubled “gay” man (Bradley Manning) was enlisted in the military at a time when the liberal “Don‘t Ask Don’t Tell” was not yet replaced by the hyper-liberal Obama policy;
(4) Even under the less liberal “DADT” policy, Manning was not placed under such restrictions to classified information as would have been in effect in the 1970‘s or the 1980’s;
(5) The access to classified information permitted to Manning resulted in a serious breach in security that has been problematic to even our left wing president and left wing senators like John Kerry; and
(6) Under the current hyper-liberal policy on “gays” in the military, Americans can expect the increase in latitude given to these often-troubled individuals to result in further problems wrought upon our military and out nation.
warrior21
Posted on February 5, 2012 at 5:21amChuck Stein; I would say that part of the problem is the volunteer Army. I feel that all standards throughout the Army were lowered in order to enlist an all-volunteer Army. It is my opinion that regardless of what our leaders tell us… today’s Army is not better then Army we had during the Vietnam war. That Army consisted of both volunteers and draftees. I had the honor of serving with a lot of draftees during the Korean War, and although we had none in Special Forces during Vietnam, those I knew during that time were some of the best soldiers I ever served with. Manning is a result of the low standards and poor leadership at the highest levels of the Army.

Posted on February 5, 2012 at 3:03am1)Rather than fighting to fix our country, we did the same as so-called“wetbacks” do…we stole across water and into another land to fullfill our hopes and dreams. Oh, wait a minute…I left out the part where we lied through our teeth to our king, borrowing from him the ships/supplies/money to make the “swim” and then –when we found it was so great here– we pulled down our pants and said “kiss it.” Oh, I also left out the part where we tricked/lied/stole every square inch of land from its owners…and when that did not work out 100%…we slaughtered them.
2) Our great nation then thought hey…since we slaughtered one country’s inhabitants…why not enslave another country’s people to do all the work so we can get rich off of their backs.
3) Then –since that was working so well– several nations decided “Hey, we loved it so much the first time…let’s do it again” and tried to do to the US what we did to the King. Too bad we were right next door and did not have to sail a sea to say “Oh, no you don’t!” But, hurrah for us, after countless lives lost, we managed to do what the King was not able to.
4) Then we noticed our grand and glorious country might be taken from us the same way we got it…and since we did not have enough people to defend it, we started the whole “Give us your poor…” BS.

The amorphous internet collective known as “Anonymous” announced the other day that they have successfully attacked and overtaken the websites of American white supremacists American Third Position (A3P); in doing so, they have also, they say, uncovered evidence of close links between A3P and Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul.
In a statement on pirasec.com, Anonymous wrote:
Fellow anons: we are pleased to bring you the dismantling of a major US-based white supremacist network known as the “American Third Position”(A3P). These racist losers have chapters across the US, operate several white power websites, forums and online stores, and are even running a candidate in the 2012 elections…
In addition to finding the usual racist rants and interactions with other white power groups, we also found a disturbingly high amount of members who are also involved in campaigning for Ron Paul.
According to these messages, Ron Paul has regularly met with many A3P members, even engaging in conference calls with their board of directors.
And then there are a couple videos on YouTube where Anoymous posted videos and [supports] Ron Paul too.

For instance, many democrat leaders do not like the federal government spying on americans and violating civil liberty. There is nothing wrong working with people on issues that you are in agreement with. Americans want washington to get these things done. This is also why ron paul does so well with independents. Don’t be suprised if you see some democrat candidates in 2016 calling for balanced budgets and ending federal reserve. that is a good thing
Have you ever seen a ron paul event? It is the most widely diverse crowd ever. Looking at these people – you would never think they have anything in common. There is usually a young college kid – standing next to a 300 lb trucker – standing next to someone from india – standing next to a grandma. You cannot take the words of a couple people and apply them to everyone – that is an unfair statement and you know it
Regarding your illegal alien comment. I have been meaning to buy that book so i dont know the quote. You should provide the rest of the quote. In an ideal world, yes – there would be no borders because there wouldnt be a problem with people freely moving around. Ron Paul knows we are not an ideal world and he is not a true libertarian – that was an unfair statement and you know it. If you watch debates, ron paul wants the illegal immagration stop
