Art? Taxpayer-Funded Exhibit Equates Republican Govs. With Nazism

A new exhibit at a Michigan city art gallery features a provocative piece that depicts four Republican governors beneath the Nazi party symbol. Despite complaints, the work will remain on display.
Titled “The Faces of American Fascism,” the poster has pictures of Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Wis. Gov. Scott Walker, Mich. Gov. Rick Snyder and Fla. Gov. Rick Scott under the national insignia of Nazi Germany. The symbol of the Republican Party is encircled in the wreath under the eagle instead of a swastika.

"The Faces of American Fascism" by Sean Michael Stimac is currently on display at the Marquette Arts and Cultural Center.
Written in the middle of the poster are the words, “Anti union,” “anti worker,” “anti woman,” “anti elderly” and “anti poor.” At the bottom, it charges viewers to “Rise up! Demand a recall” next to an image of a closed fist.
The piece is part of the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center’s “What’s in a Name?” July exhibit. Housed in the lower level of the city public library, the exhibition is slated to run through July 29.
The center provides gallery space for six to 12 exhibits per year, with artists sometimes waiting more than a year to show their work. Nikke Nason, the arts administration director, said the center is financed through the city’s general fund.
According to the center’s website, “Exhibitions are curated with consideration for quality of the exhibit, what will be of interest to the community locally, regionally or nationally and suitability of subject matter…. All displays that the art gallery exhibits are suitable for all ages and will not promote discrimination against any person or group.”
Nason said the exhibit’s two artists, Joe Sobel and Sean Michael Stimac, are both local and have shown their work in the area before. According to a city press release, Stimac, the poster’s creator, “visually communicates his message, which is often political in nature.”
Marquette Assistant City Manager Karl Zueger, who oversees the center, acknowledged the piece was “questionable” but said it did not violate the city’s standards for being obscene, sexually explicit, having elements of racism or inciting violence.
“We didn’t see that it met any one of those tenets,” Zueger said in an interview with The Blaze.
Zueger said he consulted the chair of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and sought a legal opinion before making the final call on whether to display it.
“This is a First Amendment right, freedom of expression. From those we’ve consulted from an artistic standpoint they deem it an artistic expression,” he said.
The exhibit contains a disclaimer saying the art does not represent the beliefs of the city of Marquette and is solely the expression of the artist, Zueger said.
“Art’s not without controversy,” he added.
Zueger said he’s received “a few” complaints from the Marquette County Republican Party.
“It’s their belief that it is offensive, they’ve requested we take the piece down,” Zueger said.
“Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. When you have an art gallery there are times that the artist may illustrate a perspective, whether it be political or social and there’s always that possibility of it being offensive,” Zueger said. “We intend to keep it up until the exhibit closes.”
But Marquette County Republican Party Chair Dan Adamini said his organization is not calling for the piece’s removal, but instead wants to ensure a “mistake like this could never happen again.”
“I’m calling into question the judgment of the people [who approved the work],” Adamini said. “This is clearly not art, this is hate speech and a call to political action.”
Adamini said he’s not doing this as a Republican, and that any such work would offend “any clear-thinking person.”
“Freedom of speech says the government won’t punish you for anything you say,” he said. “It doesn’t guarantee a government-sponsored audience.”
Nason estimated she too has received “six or seven” complaints from patrons who were offended by the work. She said they did not tie themselves to the Republican Party.

Having said that a reference to Nazism is off base and used merely to inflate the emotional response. The term Fascism is correctly used in the poster. A extension to Nazism is contestable extension of the image or message.
While fascism was based on certain political ideology, Nazism was blindly based on racial hatred.

Posted on July 13, 2011 at 5:52pm@Islesfordian Purely on the definition of the term. It can be associated with any number of political ideologies so there isn’t necessarily a tie to any one. The four governors in the poster could be associated with a an unyielding, strong commitment to a political ideology. The term Nazism is clearly incorrectly used, but I understand the constant need to be edgy and provoking here. Fires up the zealots.

I think you are wrong here. But if we grant that this is correct, that makes fascism a term with no meaning whatsoever, so there can be no question of it being used correctly as there is no incorrect usage.
A practical definition of fascism would be: nationalism, authoritarianism and a one party state that suppresses dissent.

Posted on July 13, 2011 at 6:44pm@ The Hawk, slavery and its predominance in the world is partly due to the African people who rounded up and sold their own extended family. Also, the practice of slavery was not uncommon in Africa and often, when they went to war with other tribes, they would sell off the men as slaves to the traders and keep the women as their own slaves because they were easier to control and because of that control they were able to be worked harder, and other stuff.
Apparently I don’t get your simile because I do feel that some of the burden for slavery lies with the people who sold the slaves. Also, I remember quite vividly that in ancient Rome and Greece, there were white slaves, also, I’m pretty sure the Moors took slaves in Spain.

Posted on July 13, 2011 at 9:26pmI object to any use of Nazi imagery because it‘s ridiculous hyperbole in any context in today’s world and diminishes the horror of Hilter’s regime. I object to it when Glenn Beck uses it, I object to it in signs at Tea Party rallies, I object to it when the people on this website use it and I object to it in this instance.
But this is one thing you guys have exactly backwards. Saying this is “tax payer supported” is ridiculous. Yes, it’s at a tax payer supported art gallery, but it does cost taxpayers a cent to painting or poster in there. Assumming they charge admission, having controversial material in their probably raises revenues. And, to remind you, the Constitution prevents the government from censoring speach. First Amendment.
But here’s my real point. When a public art gallery can only show “government approved” art or art approved by any single group, that’s when you should be afraid. That’s when opinions are being suppressed. That when a country become like, some, you know, other past countries.
Besides is it not true that the Republican party is against unions? That’s false?

Posted on July 13, 2011 at 11:41pm@Islesfordian If you look it is not a well defined term, but I think some of the relatively extreme positions of these governors, particularly the ones that are driven more by ideology than governmental necessity would approach a form of fascism. For example the unions in MN agreed in negotiations to the necessary salary cuts to meet the governors budget, but he was driven to take away their collective bargaining rights. What was his intent, what was he driven by…. not fiscal necessity.
@encinom The actions of these governors does not appear rooted in the belief in, or promotion of a superior race so don’t see any relationship to Nazism. As far as GB is concerned I find him completely irrelevant and really don’t anything he says worthy of comment.

Posted on July 14, 2011 at 2:25amJrook,
Fascism is only a poorly defined term by those who want to make it so. Fascism under Mussolini, Franco and Hitler had clearly identifiable features. Fascism advocates a strong central government that claims authority over every aspect of society. Fascist governments do not try to run everything the way communists do, but they do direct the private running of business to serve the publc ends. This sounds much more like Democrats than Republicans. Think of how much authority progressive government claims. It can tell us what lightbulbs we can use. It tells companies where they can build new plants. It interferes in the running of Catholic Charities if they don’t behave the way the state wants. And if you don‘t think democrats are guided by ideology in their policies then you simply aren’t being honest and it is pointless engaging in a conversation.
Your characterization of the fight with unions in Wisconsin is false. Walker did not take away collective bargening rights. He simply put checks upon them so that the people had a say. If you don‘t think fiscal necessity had something to do with his fight with the union you simply aren’t paying attention to the argument. You may not agree with the fiscal analysis, but to act as if there wasn’t one only shows an ideological blindness on your part. The problem of public sector union benefits and how they are driving governments into fiscal insolvency has been elaborated at length repeatedly.

You left something out. Arbeiterpartei literally translates to “Worker’s Party”.
It’s the Nationalist Socialist WORKERS Party. Yes, Nazism is so clost to Communism that they are practially indistinguishable. Both have Socialism as their core.
Oh yeah, you should also note that Worker’s Party means they were originally a UNION. It’s incorrect to say that Hitler was anti-union. He did outlaw most unions, except for his own. You were required to only join his union.

This is quintesential nazism and is a pervasive belief among the good germans of today[americans] .Also pre-emptive war shock and awe, occupation torture and mass murder of civilians is labeled liberation [this is a blatant lie expressed to assert the real nazi belief in might makes right imperialist greedy nationalism which is nowthe thuggish dishonable american nazi stand].Unlike the nazis of yore however ,today here it is not coming from a regime imposed on the people but from the ground up-the people via media propaganda and some right wing politicians have turned the populace into nazis and the government at the highest levels is attempting to curtail it.Though it is pervasive in executive levels of government too.As is the mass murder and torture of perhaps millions of muslims[a religion it is now acceptablle to openly express contempt for and a people it is now acceptable to bully, openly dehumanize in your press and by your politicians.Anti-semitism directed at arabs and as virulent and potentialy as deadly from todays

That is a wonderful explanation of today’s American Progressive Party. Your points are spot on for the American Progressives, both on the right and the left. The people pictured in the poster however, are not part of the progressive problem.

No Let Us Prey is correct in his/her assumption about Marquette. The city is in the U.P. of Michigan but is as Liberal as Detroit or Deerborn. I know because I live less than an hour away. Why do you think that was the ONLY city in the U.P. Obama ever visited or is welcome in? Also believe that Snyder will not get recalled.

Democratic anyway: Bart Stupak represented the area.
But no way Arab, as Let Us Prey suggests.
Snyder’s job is secure; Walker, not so sure.

this is 1930′s Germany all over again…the Communists fighting the Socialists….they are trying the same crap 80 years later….
that is the problem with Progressives – they think there are only two options… Nazi or Commie… if you don’t buy into one of these two philosophies then you are a wacko, uneducated, moron that relies on your guns, religion, and fear of those not like you (racist) to make decisions…. all the enlightened educated people know that only Socialism or Communism is fair and without criminality…
this is just the Commie Progressives trying to fight the Nazi/Facist Progressives…what they don‘t understand is that the men listed aren’t EITHER!! they are Patriotic Constitutional Capitalists…

I merely wondered how the artist would feel about his family being depicted in such a fashion – the cross reference is for the left‘s lack of Godliness and the hanging is for the KKK and the left’s intolerance to minorities, no matter what they say. Please go locate a troll to criticize – there are plenty of them lurking.
