As Another Gov’t-Funded Energy Co. Goes Under, Obama Admin Announces More Loans

“The company, Ener1, received a $118 million grant from DOE [Department of Energy] in 2010 as part of the president’s stimulus package,” writes the Heritage Foundation’s Lachlan Markay. “The money, which went to Ener1 subsidiary EnerDel, aimed to promote renewable energy storage battery technology for electrical grid use.”

Today, Ener1 announced it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Despite the generous federal support Ener1 received (Vice President Biden even visited Ener1, January 26, 2011, the day after the President pledged in his State of the Union address to put “one million advanced technology vehicles on the road by 2015” with the help of taxpayer funding), and like several other now-bankrupt energy companies, Ener1 was “racked by problems.”

See the Vice President mistakenly, but appropriately, refer to the bankrupt company as “Enron one”:

“In October, NASDAQ delisted the company due to non-compliance with Securities and Exchange Commission filing requirements. A month later, the company’s president, chief executive, and top financial officer were fired,” Markay writes.

Here‘s what the company had to say about Thursday’s news:

Ener1, Inc. (OTC: HEVV) (the “Company”) today announced that it has reached agreement with its primary investors and lenders on a restructuring plan that will significantly reduce its debt and provide up to $81 million to recapitalize the Company to support its long-term business objectives and strategic plan.

To implement this restructuring plan, the Company has voluntarily initiated a “pre-packaged” Chapter 11 case in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York, in which it is requesting that the Court confirm a pre-packaged Plan of Reorganization to implement the restructuring.  The Company filed a proposed Disclosure Statement and Plan of Reorganization with the Court and anticipates completing the restructuring process in approximately 45 days…

The pre-packaged restructuring plan, which has been unanimously accepted by all of Ener1′s impaired creditors, provides for a restructuring of the Company’s long-term debt and the infusion of up to $81 million of equity funding, which will support the continued operation of Ener1′s subsidiaries and help ensure that the restructuring will not adversely impact their employees, customers and suppliers.  Of this amount, a new debtor-in-possession (DIP) credit facility of up to $20 million will be available upon Court approval to support working capital needs during the restructuring.  The balance, for a total of up to $81 million, will be available over the four years following Court approval of the restructuring plan and subject to the satisfaction of certain terms and conditions.

As mentioned in the above, Ener1 is not the first government-funded “green energy” initiative to go bankrupt. In fact, Ener1 isn’t even the first government-sponsored energy storage technology company to go bankrupt.

Beacon Power beat them to the punch.

“Beacon Power, which manufactures flywheel energy storage technology, received a $43 million loan guarantee from the same stimulus program that funded Solyndra [emphasis added],” Markay writes. “Despite having used $3 million marked for loan repayment to continue funding its daily operations, Beacon filed for Chapter 11 in November.”

And as if this didn’t seem bad enough, on the very same day Ener1 files for Chapter 11, the Obama administration announces more “clean energy” loan guarantee.

“Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced his second bio-fuels loan guarantee in a week, revealing that the Agriculture Department (USDA) is slated to loan an Oregon biorefinery $232.5 million for a project expected to create 65 jobs and support 38 others [emphasis added],” The Washington Examiner’s Joel Gehrke writes.

“This project and others like it will help to establish a domestic advanced biofuels industry that will create jobs here at home and open new markets in the Pacific Northwest and across America,” Vilsack said in a statement.

So, what’s the reasoning behind this loan guarantee?

“USDA offered the loan guarantee as an example of President Obama fighting global warming while increasing energy security and helping the rural economy,” Gehrke writes.

The agreement announced today is similar to a $25 million loan guarantee USDA approved last week for an Iowa project “expected” to create 38 jobs.

This is what Ener1 originally had in mind (via ):

      @Bernbart:
Uh…, the $118 million that went to Ener1 was part of the ‘Stimulus’ funding, from 2009. If you can call them ‘Republicans’, only Snowe, Collins, and Spector voted for it. Thus, for the ENTIRETY of the House & Senate, 530 votes total…, three, got that?… THREE so-called Republicans voted aye.
For you to defend the Democrats and Obama (or attack the Republicans) on the basis of three rogue so-called Republicans is laughingly absurd.

Why is Congress, which knows NOTHING about energy, providing funds for such projects? Isn’t that the domain of the venture capital community? Government needs to get back to governing and the private sector needs to get out of government! We should not have private companies, or public ones for that matter, running to government for funding! Government is not competent to invest in such technologies and steals from the taxpayers to support their habit!

So many here were and remain against the bailout of the auto industry in the US. You say they should have been allowed to go under. Republicans say we should let the industry fail: the millions of jobs provided the US auto industry and their US vendors don’t matter. Who cares? they say. That‘s capitalism and we don’t care about jobs, only the deficit. Who cares if America no longer makes cars? Who cares the blue collar employees workers lose their jobs.

But the auto industry was bailed out, saving millions of jobs. You think the stimulus didn‘t didn’t do anything except give you a tax break, but you’re wrong. As of now GM at least is very profitable, has paid back half it’s loan and is for now the largest automobile manufacturer in the world. Go Made in America!

All of these posts are missing the point, and the point is that GM was mismanaged, and the government has no Constitutional authority to bail any business out.
Meddling in energy by not letting us produce our own supplies, and thereby leaving us vulnerable to foreign suppliers, is another example of unconstitutional intrusion by a socialist president and his co-horts in Washington.
If solar energy is so good, then it will win the battle in a free market.

This is progressivism and crony capitalism at its worst. This is Obama’s vision for America. He wants centralized power in the executive branch so that he can set up these unelected agencies run by “industry experts”, through which he can then pay off his buddies that have donated to his campaign without any congressional approval or oversight. If we don’t put an end to these progressive politicians both on the right and on the left our republic will be finished, the free market will be gone, and along with it our freedoms and liberties will be lost for generations to come, if not gone forever.

You people are complete idiots. This funding was Not done with executive power. It was approved by Congress, as all funding and budget are, and was under congressional oversight. Besides both Democrats and Republicans supported it.

Green Energy is a scam. None of these companies will ever show a profit. It’s not about energy, it’s about political contributions. Political contributors get grants to develop a technology that doesn’t work. The management uses the grant money to overpay themselves and a few employees so that they can make generous contributions to Obama’s re-election fund.

Obama can expect 5% of the Green Energy grants to circle back to his re-elections fund. The taxpayer gets screwed for the other 95%. About 15% will by cycled to the Democratic Party and other criminal organizations.

This short video shows a great example of how the liberal media is in panic mode. These stories are coming out, and the people are more wide awakethan I can ever remember.

Obama has probably sent out his knee-breakers. Chicago-style politics usually involves bribes and intimidation. Arizona is also challenging Obama’s eligibility. Look for violent riots in Atlanta, Arizona and Los Angeles if there is a ruling against the First Black President.

These Bio plants are great in that they provide jobs and a disposal for bio waste for the most part. The trouble is the cost, they do not ever expect that they (The Bio Plants) will ever operate at a profit they like, almost all of the government plans for Green stuff, start and end with Tax Payer money.

At millions per job how is it that we can afford these jobs. It would really be more cost effective to just give a bunch (lottery) of folks three or fours years wages without taxes. It would do more for the economy and cost less then this pie in the sky green crap.

I would vote for Deputy Dawg to get this country’s credit card out of his hands.
But let’s keep the primaries undecided as long as possible because that makes it harder for the other side to campaign effectively. If they only have one person to go after they can concentrate better on the one than on many.
    Keep em guessing!

Hey Obama, If you give me 2 million in loans I guarantee I will hire 40 employees and promise I won’t go bankrupt. I mean you want to loan out 232.5 million to create a meager 65 jobs. 2 million for 40 jobs sounds like a bargain to me, it would only cost 50k per employee compared to 3.5 million per job. Lets get the deal done.

I’m convinced it is blatant, in-your-face, intentional destruction of America at this point. Those who are blind and deceived will continue to support him or those in our midst who actually want America’s destruction while the rest of us are keenly aware of who this impostor is. Obama is intentionally taunting us and flaunting the power he has knowing there is nothing we can do. Expect it to continue in increased measure as he continues to destroy this country.

This is nothing more than those who are on top now, need to move aside and allow someone else to take their place. I would bet you will see more “Left” people rise up on the forbes list. There will be established companies and corps. taken apart, and these faceless entities taking them over. The money is going somewhere, this is just another way to legally launder money. The people that are running these companies, if they are ever investigated, I bet wouldn’t be able to get a payday loan, let alone multimillion dollar grant. If you investigate these companies, I would bet you can trace their roots back to Chicaga, Unions, or most of them have Ivy league educations. This is a raid of the treasury and no one is doing anything about it.
