As Iranian Ships Pass Through Suez, Israel Decries ‘Provocation’

JERUSALEM (AP) — As two Iranian warships sailed into the Mediterranean on Tuesday, an Israeli leader charged that Iran’s goal was hegemony in the Middle East.
The ships exited the Suez Canal Tuesday afternoon. It was the first time Iran has sent warships through the canal since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Israeli leaders have called the move a provocation.
“The passage of the Iranian ships is part of the comprehensive struggle that Iran is conducting against the West for hegemony and control in the Middle East,” Vice Premier Silvan Shalom told an energy conference in Israel’s southern resort of Eilat.
“The objective of the Iranian provocation is to signal to the leaders of the Arab world who the new leader is in the Middle East,” he said.
Iran and Israel are bitter enemies. Israel considers Iran a threat because of its nuclear program, missile development and frequent references by its leader to Israel’s destruction. Iran also backs militant anti-Israel groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
Despite the strong language, Israel was seen as unlikely to take action against the boats, which are expected to remain in international waters as they head toward Syria, past the Israeli coast.
Military analysts on Israeli TV news programs said the Iranian military vessel and its trailing supply ship do not pose a real threat to Israel.
Israeli security officials said that as long as the ships remain in international waters, there is nothing Israel can legally do. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Report Post »GhostOfJefferson
Posted on February 22, 2011 at 3:28pmWe use Arabic numerals, actually those are not “English numerals”. Ironic isn’t it?
Though technically the Iranians are not Arabic, they’re Farsi and a few other tribes mixed together.
I suspect there are maritime standards all ships adhere to, and numbering may well be one of them. I know little about maritime law. On the other hand, an air traffic controller of any given nation will give you orders in English, because it’s an international standard. I suspect the same applies here.

Ahmadinejad knows history and may be using these ships as bait. The loss off his owm troops life would be of little concern to him. In his mind he would be doing them a favor by making them martyrs. In any case, there is a dangerous game of chess going on here. If Israel takes the ships out, they are zionist murderers, if they don’t Ahmadinejad still wins by defying Israel.

Posted on February 22, 2011 at 3:30pmQuite correct Gonzo. If Israel makes them martyrs then they unite all Arabs at once. If they do nothing, and Iran looks like it‘s flipping it’s finger at Israel, that probably won’t unite all Arabs at once. Of the two options, leaving them alone (assuming no future wrong doing) is the wiser course.

While Israel would be smart to keep a very close eye on these and other Iranian ships, simply sailing through an internationally recognized straight is not provocation nor aggressive in and of itself.

The moment a boat crosses into Israeli waters, then they can get all indignant. Until then, cooler heads need to prevail.
Screaming about war and sinking ships where no offense was committed is irrational.

Israel is basically being surrounded by countries falling into chaos. They have reason for concern. The frigate isn’t a threat, but they need to watch the supply ship closely. Israel also realizes they no longer have an ally in the United States. They’re in a no-win situation if you ask me. Gonzo was completely correct when he said “If Israel takes the ships out, they are Zionist murderers, if they don’t Ahmadinejad still wins by defying Israel”. What Israel considers a provocation is irrelevant. As long as the ships don’t enter their territorial waters and behave according to maritime and international laws they have no right to act on it. Wouldn’t be the first time Israeli forces attack ships in international waters, though.
Report Post »TexasCommonSense
Posted on February 22, 2011 at 6:52pmNon-sequitur, Iranian ships can easily launch an attack on Israel from International waters. Many wars have been started and fought in International waters. Being as Iran has been producing nuclear material for “peaceful” purposes for years, that one attack may be all it takes to totally annihilate their state. As they say, the best defense is a good offense. The very existence of Israel is on the line so I say they can do what they need to do to protect themselves. If the Arabic and Persian countries were to put down their arms there would be peace; if Israel were to put down its arms there would be know more Israel. They have a right to self-defense. I just hope they don’t have to use it.

Do not expect Israel to attack until they have to….they can’t. They know how serious this is…..look at the countries around them.
I watched an hour program from EVP/Israel Emergency Aid Fund last night. They know this is going to be so bad that they had already started an EVP Project that is looking for volunteers to help them in emergencies. They are looking for all types of volunteers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, carpenters, electricians, workers to help with food delivery to shelters, etc. They train the volunteers here on the different equipment, etc available in Israel, so in an emergency the volunteers can be on El Al within 6-10 hours. The volunteers go to Israel for 10-14 days (can be longer, but not less than 10 days) but, they say it is hard for people to handle what they go through. They have had great success with firefighters–they only have 1200 firefighters for 7M citizens (we have 1800 in Dallas) They are looking for volunteers and/or donations. It costs $6,000 to equip each firefighter with gear.

Posted on March 8, 2011 at 11:12amRebellion and the prophetic aftermath of American foreign policy
As Americans begin to deal with the gas price increase of some 50 cents in the past four months, 16 cents a gallon in the last week, the unrest in the Middle East begins to take a more concrete position in the hearts and minds–and pocketbooks–of the citizens. This is going to sink in real fast about what the Lord says of Israel in Genesis 12:3, “I will bless them that bless thee and curse him that curses thee.” The faster the enemies of Israel are established and reestablished the more we will see this very verse in the near beginning of the Bible play out before our eyes. Why? There is increasingly more evidence that the White House is behind much of the unrest.
News outlets such as the UK Telegraph, the Examiner, the Jerusalem Post and more are painting a picture of a delusional American president working with international socialist organizations, the Muslim Brotherhood and other dissident groups throughout the Middle East to foment revolution in the name of democracy. The man who occupies the Oval Office told a group of Jewish campaign donors in Miami that Israel and the US should not be afraid of the changes taking place in the Middle East. He said, “I‘m actually confident that 10 years from now we’re going to be able to look back potentially and say this was the dawning of an entirely new and better era.”
The new and better era, however, is truly one of perspective. If you are Islamic, the possibilitiy of a totally “Islamified” Middle East is greater today than in any other since the establishment of Israel in 1948. A Wikileaks released secret document reveals that the most powerful nation in the world, the United States, has been working to undermine governments throughout the Middle East. The public position, of course, is to establish democracy. In reality, however, the United States has done the heavy lifting of aiding and abetting revolution in the Middle East. As Redstate.com reports, “Now the Muslim Brotherhood, with the help of Iran and some al Qaeda support, will start the real revolution.”
As America braces itself for $4 dollar gasoline and all the inflationary aftermath, those who can discern the scriptures will see the direct cause and effect of being rebellious to God’s word. God will not be mocked. In Isaiah 66:1 the Lord says, “The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.” In verse 4, the Lord says, “I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear; but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.” This is a strong word today. And many will take offense. Understand, God judges nations and the truth of the prophecies are not denied. Gird yourself and pray for mercy.
Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!
