As Iraq War Ends, No Large-Scale Parade for Troops Planned

American Troops Coming Home from Iraq May Not Get Parades

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — Americans probably won’t be seeing a huge ticker-tape parade anytime soon for troops returning from Iraq, and it’s not clear if veterans of the nine-year campaign will ever enjoy the grand, flag-waving, red-white-and-blue homecoming that the nation’s fighting men and women received after World War II and the Gulf War.

Officials in New York and Washington say they would be happy to help stage a big celebration, but Pentagon officials say they haven’t been asked to plan one.

Most welcome-homes have been smaller-scale: hugs from families at military posts across the country, a somber commemoration by President Barack Obama at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

With tens of thousands of U.S. troops still fighting a bloody war in Afghanistan, anything that looks like a big victory celebration could be seen as unseemly and premature, some say.

“It’s going to be a bit awkward to be celebrating too much, given how much there is going on and how much there will be going on in Afghanistan,” said Don Mrozek, a military history professor at Kansas State University.

Two New York City councilmen, Republicans Vincent Ignizio and James Oddo, have called for a ticker-tape parade down the stretch of Broadway known as the Canyon of Heroes. A similar celebration after the Gulf War was paid for with more than $5.2 million in private donations, a model the councilmen would like to follow.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said last week that he was open to the idea but added, “It‘s a federal thing that we really don’t want to do without talking to Washington, and we’ll be doing that.”

A spokesman for the mayor declined to elaborate on the city’s reasons for consulting with Washington. Ignizio said he had been told by the mayor’s office that Pentagon officials were concerned that a celebration could spark violence overseas and were evaluating the risk.

Navy Capt. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, said that he has not heard that issue raised and that New York has yet to make a formal proposal. He also said officials are grateful communities around the country are finding ways to recognize the sacrifices of troops and their families.

The last combat troops in Iraq pulled out more than a week ago. About 91,000 U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines are in Afghanistan, battling a stubborn Taliban insurgency and struggling to train Afghan forces so that they eventually can take over security. Many U.S. troops who fought in the Iraq War could end up being sent to Afghanistan.

A parade might invite criticism from those who believe the U.S. left Iraq too soon, as well as from those who feel the war was unjustified. It could also trigger questions about assertions of victory.

Mrozek noted that President George W. Bush’s administration referred to military action in the Middle East as part of a global war on terror, a conflict that’s hard to define by conventional measures of success.

“This is not a war on a particular place or a particular force,” he said.

Bush himself illustrated the perils of celebrating milestones in the war, Mrozek said, when he landed on an aircraft carrier and hailed the end of major combat operations in Iraq behind a “Mission Accomplished” banner in May 2003. U.S. troops remained in Iraq for 8 1/2 more years, and Bush was criticized over the banner.

The benchmarks were clearer in previous wars. After World War II, parades marked Japan’s surrender. After the Gulf War, celebrations marked the troops’ return after Iraqi forces were driven out of Kuwait.

The only mass celebrations of U.S. military activities since Sept. 11, 2001, were largely spontaneous: Large crowds gathered in Times Square and outside the White House in April after Osama bin Laden was killed.

At the same time, Iraq veterans aren’t coming home to the hostility many Vietnam veterans encountered. The first large-scale event honoring Vietnam veterans was not held until 1982, when thousands marched in Washington for the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Parades were later held in New York in 1985 – 10 years after the war ended – and in Chicago the next year.

“I think we’ve seen recent history in Vietnam, where that wasn’t done appropriately, and we want to make sure we do the appropriate thing by those that made the ultimate sacrifice and risked their lives for us to say thanks,” Ignizio said.

At Fort Hood in Texas, troops have returned to welcome-home ceremonies at the post that were attended mostly by soldiers’ families. Soldiers in uniform run to hug their loved ones after an announcer yells, “Charge!”

Col. Douglas Crissman, commander of the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division, said Saturday after one such ceremony that that is as large-scale a welcome as the troops need.

“This is just the right size because it’s quick and meaningful and it gets them home to their families,” Crissman said.

Staff Sgt. Troy Rudolph was among the first troops to arrive in Iraq in March 2003 and was in the last combat brigade to leave. Rudolph said that a large-scale ceremony would be nice but that he feels appreciated even without confetti falling from the sky.

“I’ve had people buy me lunch at airports just because I was in uniform,” said Rudolph, who lives at Fort Hood with his wife and 9-year-old stepdaughter. “It‘s emotional because you don’t realize what kind of impact you have on people across the country.”

In Washington, federal agencies take the lead on planning parades, and so far nothing is in the works. A spokesman for Mayor Vincent Gray said the city would be honored to host a parade but said local officials wouldn’t take the lead in staging one.

In recent years, most of the ticker-tape parades in New York have been held for the city’s championship sports teams.

“The sports celebrations that we’ve had in New York for the Yankees and the Mets were amazing,” Oddo said. “But these are the real heroes.”

Why can’t private citizens organize a ticker tape parade? Is there someone here that has the knowledge available to start this. I’d be happy to volunteer to help.

Please don’t make troops march in a parade when they get home. It’s just a couple more hours away from thier families, standing around, so they can have their pictures taken by total strangers. They just want to get home. If you want to show support for our troops, past and present, maybe join the American Legion.

      DEEREEVES,
Do not worry. The troops do not want a parade.
They know that we have lost Iraq . They know their sacrifice is for naught.
President Barry Dunham has obliterated any good they did for his personal leftist political gains.

They know they have the support of the American People. They despise this administration.

Again…,no parade necessary. They understand that Barry Dunham…,our Commander In Chief, does not give a flying freaking feather what they did over there, or what happens to them upon their return home.

EVERY soldier remembers MOVEON’s “GENERAL BETRAYUS” ad in the N.Y. Times.
They know who has their backs and who does not.
This entire Dunham administration NEVER had their backs. They know they were “CANNON FODDER”.

I emphasize…,NO PARADE NECESSARY! They just are glad to be home.

A CIRCUS Parade down 5th. Avenue with “Himself The Elf” PROGRESSIVE Bloomberg?! A THANK YOU speech from President Dunham and his hippy FLOTUS? NON! NON!

      It would be total hypocrisy!

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D), spoke to students on Monday, Dec. 19th at Ridgewood HS in Norridge, Illinois. From the Pioneer Press local paper, Norridge/HH edition, page 8: “One student asked if the US won the war in Iraq and said that she was expecting a big celebration. Schakowsky said in the past it was clear who the victors were but now things aren’t as definitive.” So you see, this is what this administration thinks.

The lack of a parade is predictable, coming from a regime that hates the military. But the men and women who have served understand. The best gift we can give them is our respect and appreciation for a job well done under impossible conditions these last three years. WELCOME HOME!

I was in ‘61-67 USN Submarine force…there were no parades only sneers ( and feces thrown) from the public! Lawn signs read “Sailors and dogs keep off the grass”. Except one “great” Irish bar (I wish I could remember it’s name) in NEW YORK CITY…I could ‘not’ spend a dime in it…Irish whisky flowed like water…the cabbie poured me onto my plane…when the plane got to its altitude (1 drink equals 3) I was higher than the plane. We didn’t need any parades or lavish welcome…and we need not need the wrath of the Chicken manure, dimwit public…what I needed was for idiot Americans to get their act together and blame the real evil doers….CORRUPT POLITICIANS…NOT the boys in green and blue!

Peace with honor my A$$ ! We are already seeing Iraq degrade into chaos since the ANNOUNCED troop withdrawal. Anyway, give our fighting men and women a HUGE Welcome Home ! In WWI and WWII America sent in our very best – Korea, the Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan War was no different – America once again sent in our very Best!

Today, a parade would be too sensitive for Muslims that work in our Government and throughout America. So don’t expect this Administration to even consider it.

On the other hand, if a Parade is going to be organized don’t be surprised to see the Vietnam Veterans step up and organize it and get it done 1st class – they too know first hand how it feels to be ignored by the Government. God Bless all that served and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our Country.

First off, I’d like to publicly thank EVERY SINGLE man and woman that fought to protect and preserve MY freedom! THANK YOU ! From the bottom of my heart.

Secondly, I’d like to apologize for being a part of the silent majority that allowed our great nation to get into such a shameful state, both economically, and socially.

Next, I’d love to see crowds welcome OUR Troops home – AT THE GATE, but, TSA won’t let you through unless you have a ticket.

Lastly, I like a good parade as much as anybody, who’s to say that a parade is the only or the right way to welcome them home and thank them for their service? I’m not arguing against them, I’m simply pointing out that they are not the ONLY means of thanking OUR DEFENDERS.

Shake their hand, pay for their dinner, offer to help them find a job or to write a resume. There are MANY ways we can help them out!

What would a parade celebrate, anyway? The killing or maiming for life of hundreds of thousands of American troops? The shredding of a country that was no threat to us initially and leaving it weak and tottering – an easy score for islamic radicals and Iran? Giving Iran the easy opportunity to control the entire Persian Gulf?

Obama, his military advisors, and anyone connected with the decision to withdraw all of our combat troops should be imprisoned for what they have done. Obama is a POS muslim. Has he ever done anything to discourage or halt the spread of radical islam? No!

My take… This isn’t what we think as a whole. I served 2 1/2 CONSECUTIVE years in Vietnam 69-71 and was there when the “TROOPS WERE COMING HOME”. Here is the “rest of the story”. If you had less than 9 months In Country, you were assigned to ANOTHER unit that lost people through attrition. So, even though your unit went home..you didn’t. I fear and have found that some of those who were in Iraq a short time, may and will be reassigned to Afghanistan, MOS needed. This is the way Bean Counters work.
I finally got out of the military in much the same atmosphere.. 1975..No jobs and bad market. I do remember one thing… as I traveled back and forth from Vietnam home on special leave.. I encountered NO spitting or feces. I went through almost every major hub..nothing. I was in class A’s every time. I have to wonder.. are the spitting stories the norm or rare? To hear them like I have..everyone but me was attacked in this manner. Almost seems like being told so many were SEAL, GREEN BERET or COMBAT CONTROL. I almost felt like I was the only regular soldier there. And NO I didn’t need a Parade to know I was home. I had a life to live, family to take care of and a Boot Strap to pull up. Parades are nice but.. remember, a pat on the back is only 3 feet higher than a kick in the rear. When you come home.. find the assistance you need to move on. Your family needs you, not a parade. There are a buttload of resources out there to help you, find them, use them. Welcome Home!!

      @Vietvet1

first of all, thanks much for your service to this nation. I have three combat deployments, and I am always very humbled during redeployment, because there is always a healthy crowd of Viet Nam vets there at the airport, greeting us when we return.

During Nam, folks deployed (for the most part) as an individual. When your year was up, you went home as an individual. I think we learned a lesson from this. Now, an entire unit deploys, and replaces a current unit (both in Iraq and Afghanistan). The replaced unit redeploys as a whole, does recovery, retrains, then gets ready for the next deployment. This prevents a soldier from getting off the aircraft in San Fran, and wondering how his buddies are doing back in the bush. Whith the entire unit going home, it is a rather lengthy process in outprocessing back through Kuwait, or Manas. It gives time to decompress, deal with stress, and other factors, and you leave with the same people you served with.

Once again, I thank you for your service in a very though period of American History.

The only victory is when every soldier comes home. Soldiers have been fighting two wars simultaneously for years so why celebrate half of a victory? Iraq should throw a parade for U.S. and coalition forces. We literally built their infrastructure, built and trained their police and military and set up their government.
On second thought, we would probably end up having to supply the ticker tape, pull security on the parade route and then clean up after the parade.

Last thing I want, is a parade that celebrates 0bama running away from Iraq.

Yes, yes, I know the pull-out was already scheduled by the Bush Administration. But their plan was to leave plenty of troops in-country to handle any rise in insurgency. 0bama left juuuust enough to protect politicians at the Embassy inside the Green Zone. Just enough, means far short of anything that looks like a mission capable force.

The only valid comparison to Vietnam, is that we shouldn’t have been there in the first place. The Gulf of Tonkin was admittedly a rouse to get us into Vietnam and WMDs were a rouse to get us into Iraq. More than 4400 u.s. soldiers have died in Iraq alone. Over 58,000 for Vietnam. Those numbers are on Democrats and Republicans.
Also, we have given them all the tools they need to thrive. We can’t hold their hands forever. We’ve already done more than any country should ever do for another country that you are at war with.

Yes, we found WMD’s, including a pallet of binary shells of Sarin that Saddam insisted had been destroyed (one of these artillery shells could kill half New York city).
