Asian Actress Apologizes for Starring in ‘Racist’ Republican Ad

Lisa Chan, the Asian actress who starred in GOP senate candidate Pete Hoekstra’s controversial Super Bowl ad, has apologized for her role in commercial that some have dubbed “racist.”
“I am deeply sorry for any pain that the character I portrayed brought to my communities,” Chan wrote on her Facebook page. “As a recent college grad who has spent time working to improve communities and empower those without a voice, this role is not in any way representative of who I am. It was absolutely a mistake on my part and one that, over time, I hope can be forgiven. I feel horrible about my participation and I am determined to resolve my actions.”
The controversy centers around Chan‘s use of broken English in the spot that bashes Hoekstra’s rival, Debbie Stabenow. HuffPo explains:
As she approached the camera, the actress thanked “Michigan Senator Debbie Spend-it-Now” for supposedly spending too much money, in turn helping the Chinese economy.
“Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good,” she said in broken and stereotypically accented English.
Here’s the original ad:
Hoekstra has faced criticism from both sides of the aisle over the ad. Not only have Democrats bashed him, but even national GOP consultant Mike Murphy called it “really, really dumb.”
“We knew we were taking an aggressive approach on this,” Hoekstra — from Michigan — said in the past in response to the criticism. “But this is a time where the people in Michigan and across the country are fed up with the spending, and we wanted to capture that frustration that they had with Washington, D.C. This ad … hits Debbie smack dab between the eyes on the issue where she is vulnerable with the voters of Michigan, and that is spending.”
But Hoekstra has since backed down. The website he created, Debbiespenditnow.com, now reroutes to Petespenditnot.com, and the ad is nowhere to be found on the site.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 10:09amThere is no actual racism at all. China contains, last check, Chinese people, and the ad was portraying a Chinese national thanking the U.S. for giving China it’s jobs and money.
It boggles the mind how it can even be twisted into something “racist”. But of course, the “offended” are always vigilant and on the lookout for offenses to wring their hands over, real or imaginary makes no difference.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 10:13amI find it interesting that none of you found this ad objectionable on any level,… except for the fact that the AMERICAN born actress from CALIFORNIA now regrets doing it because of the backlash it has caused. She’s an actress in a role, reading from a script. A very poorly written script. The ad was designed to generate fear and mistrust (which is a typical Republican tactic to use) Fear and Smear, but it backfired. It made a lot of people angry and the actress realized it was a mistake to have participated in it. She apologized for her role in it and suddenly,…. the right wingers are UP IN ARMS over her apology and are now condemning and criticizing her for it.

Report Post »It‘s a negative ad that is also so blatantly racially insensitive it’s not even funny. The backlash is mainly from the Asian community. The actress regrets her participation in it because of the insult to her ethnic community. The fact that it is a stupid ad in the first place is almost secondary.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 10:45amHi Manchurian
Ooooh, another attempt to spin. Let’s work in the world of straight talk for now, ok?
The complaint the article speaks of is people calling the ad racist. It is not racist. She is Asian, and she’s portraying a Chinese woman in China. If you think that’s racist, which I doubt any sane human being could, then you have bigger issues to deal with.
You come in and smear and belittle “the right” for commenting about the ad not being racist, on an article talking about people who think the ad is racist. Your comments are a non sequitur at best, ad hominem at worst. You’ve contributed nothing but deflection and spin. Try dealing with topics outside the framework of your ideology once in a while and you’ll see that not everything “the right” says is automatically wrong.
Good luck.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 11:25amAny time there is an ethnic sub context (in America only).
America will never get past racism. Ever. It’s fundamental to far too many peoples livelihoods, both directly and indirectly. Plus, it has been determined to be THE tool of choice to destroy someones credibility, instead of facts or unadulterated truth.
Once we let common sense and reason slip from our skill set we doomed ourselves to at least extended mediocrity, if not worse. Racism “IS” a bludgeon, today. Used every day more as a crutch than a revelation. People too lazy to think or tap out when wrong. We are all wrong at one time or another. That’s what makes us all (most of us) want to be right as much as possible.
Individual racism will never be defeated. Ever. But institutional racism, I believe is pretty much history. If the “race” industry in this country can’t get over historical racism there “IS” no way anyone else will.
Individual racism “IS” a product of thinking errors. A kind of a test. Yeah, we‘re all the same and we’re all different. Kinda cool. Now, can we get back to life?
Is racism just a perception? by anyone else? connected or not?

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 12:46pmMANCHURIAN CANDIDATE…..So let me get this straight…an ad portraying a Chinese national should have said Chinese national speajking in flawless English with no accent or inflections? I can tell you first hand working with former Taiwanese and Chinese nationals here in the U.S. that their English many times is broken. They rarely put an “s” at the end of words to denote the plural or ownerhsip (example: “Ralph” instead of “Ralph’s” supermarket). So this ad had one of two option, have the Chinese national speak in a Chinese dialect and offer subtitles or have the Chinese national speak in broken English which for an English speaking audience is just as plausible. You being a liberal git are apparently offended by the reality of non-English speaking foreigners and their characteristics in speaking the English language?

As far as the actress in the ad and the fake dialect,… if you couldn’t tell it was fake, then you were duped. Which is exactly what this ad was designed to do. I’m not offended by broken english, I’m offended by people who lie and use racial stereotyping as an effective method of advertising.
And again, you right wingers feel compelled to take the low road with the sniping and name calling. I guess that’s all you have. What a shame.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 1:25pmWe can sit here and continually point out obvious and simplistic truths portrayed in this ad. But, the simple truth about her turn around. The actress has now been pasted with the ‘racist’ label as much as the ad itself by the Hollywierd elite, the media, and the left in general. She knows which side of her bread is buttered and has a desire to continue working in her field. In a way I can’t blame her since the left pulls that bat out and takes a swing at anybody they feel should be in their sights.
Report Post »MANCHURIAN.CANDIDATE, you are either simply an idiot or just want to just have it your way on this non issue. Posted on February 16, 2012 at 1:39pmOh I see MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE…the reality of foreigners speaking broken English doesn’t offend you (but that‘s what’s offending the people this actress is apologizing to), but ads that don’t offer the truth offend you? So you‘re saying that China’s economy isn’t strengthening as ours is weakening? I’m in the investment industry and I can tell you sport, right now you’d lose that bet. By the way…her “dialect” isn’t fake. She’s not speaking in Mandarin or Cantonese, she‘s speaking in English in the manner I’ve seen many times from Taiwanese and Chinese nationals. So in reality what you‘re actually criticizing is the woman’s acting ability because her broken English delivered from an asian foundation isn’t accurate enough for you? In short….you‘re a mealy mouthed liberal goon who doesn’t acutally know what’s offended at, but because it’s an opporutinity to criticize conservatives, you’ll leap into into like a good lefty troll.

Posted on March 22, 2012 at 9:08amGood reply to Blazen, Manchurian. Her role took advantage of her ethnicity, and made it into a stereotypical caricature of Chinese people, broken English (or is it EngRish?), folksy logic, mispronunciation of names to get a point. It’s pretty dang close to the Siamese cats in Lady and The Tramp. While personally I don’t find it terribly offensive, it is downright foolish claim that it isn’t at least a little “insensitive,” insofar as it is deliberately using stereotypes in a way that mocks the ethnicity to get a few laughs. I actually thought it was a pretty clever ad, and I chuckled, albeit sheepishly, as I knew it was a little off-color. The issue is whether those things that we all find funny about stereotypes are ALWAYS offensive, or whether modest insensitivities are in a different category (hell, I’m Polish, and I laugh my butt off at many Polish jokes). The problem is that different people have different lines of tolerance for such things, and in politics, being indignant and self-righteous for pushing those lines is a fool’s endeavor. Admit it was a bit risquee, but insist that it was not intended maliciously, apologize for anyone thinking it was offensive, and insist that the overall point, however crudely presented, still holds: Stabenow spends too much money.

And while Clinton left office with a budget surplus and was paying down the debt, his Republican successor waited until Pay-Go expired and then passed all sorts of tax cuts for his rich friends while at the same time launching into an unfunded war. What did the Bush Administration have to say about this? “Reagan proved that deficits don’t matter.” Thank you, Dick Cheney. Hoekstra was part of the House during the Bush years, I’m sure he voted with his Republican members for the whole time. He is responsible for the tripling of the national debt. You can’t up spending and cut taxes and not have huge deficits. By the way, China owns only 8% of the nation’s debt.

First saying there was a surplus under Bill is just repeating the lie that DC spun out to us. We were increasing our total debt during the totality of the Clinton Admin. But pointing out the mistakes of the past should ONLY shine light on the course of today. And that should be reigning in the crazy, progressive spending and promote private enterprise and success VS. promoting governemnt as the answer. NO MORE BUSINESS AS USUAL IN DC

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 11:56am@DesertRose- If you want to hide behind rose color glasses and put your head in the sand, then do it….Uncle Bills “surplus” was that the budget anticipated something around a $750 billion dollar deficit, meaning $750 billion in the hole, but ended up only being only around $500 billion dollar, so it has been praised as a $250 billion dollar surplus…that’s not extra money to spend!!! It just mean you took out a loan for $750 billion, but actually only used $500 billion..you can pay back the $250 so that then you only owe $500, but they felt so good about what they did, they spent the $250 billion as well…..please quite spinning these Libby/Progressive poster story’s, they really don’t hold up….

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 12:33pmThe old “but you do it too” does not change the indisputable FACT that if we continue spending as we have been the last few years, we will go bankrupt. It’s no different for a country, than for a household. You simply CANNOT spend substantially more every single year than you take in, and NOT suffer the economic consequences.
And, let’s get real here. It’s not the president as much as the congress. He approves the spending, yes, but he can only approve what congress puts in front of him. If congress would restrain themselves, that would fix the problem.
Oh, and it’s not a tax problem, its a spending problem. If you took every dollar above $75,000 that anyone made, it would NOT cover what congress spends. 100% taxation of every person and company would not cover what congress is projected to spend this year. Tell me how tax rates are the problem again???
Democrats spend TOO much money. Republicans tend to want to spend less, but they still spend TOO much money.
Now they are both arguing about how there is a cliff ahead. Democrats ignore the cliff, and say full speed ahead, 100MPH is fine, nothing to worry about.
Republicans say “look out for the cliff, we better slow down to 90MPH!”
A smart person would say “lets not spend more than we take in.” Congress obviously isn’t smart enough to do that.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 2:34pmMANCHURIAN.CANDIDATE, Danged skippy it is fun poking some fun at fools here, like Desert Tokyo Rose. But, if you will notice that unlike the pile ons at some left wing blogs, this site does not allow very foul language when it comes to name calling. In fact, there is far less name calling here than on those other blogs when a conservative shows up. I’ve had plenty of lefties call me names here in the past, and I’m sure it will happen again. But, guess what? Sticks and stones…..I’ll just let it slide down my back as usual or if it is really funny and it is sometimes, I’ll get a good laugh at it. So, if you are a wannebe papa uniform foxtrot foxtrot yankee, go ahead and wear that wounded by words look and continue to whine here.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 9:00amRacism is an overused word anymore. If someone doesn’t like what you say, regardless of what it is, then you are a racist. I don’t see how racism is a talking point in this ad. She is just talking about how Debbie likes to spend money and Pete doesn’t. Nothing about race in any of it.
The libs will lie through their teeth just to push their agenda and people will believe them beacuse “a politician would never lie. We trust them.”
Power has the ability to corrupt the most saintly of people.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 9:29amRacism is one of Obummer’s power words for his campaign. He has been using the word day in and day out to start trouble. That is how groups of people have come to be that are pitted against each other. It is in fact just the opposite of what Obummer would have us believe, it is him and his cronies who are raciest.
