Every day, hundreds of thousands of people read what the Associated Press (AP) puts out on the news wires. So it could be unsettling to Romney and Clint Eastwood fans when they see what the AP published as a recap of Eastwood’s GOP convention speech.
Eastwood, as you may have heard, was the mystery guest the GOP had been teasing all week. And he wowed the crowed when he showed up with a chair and delivered a sort of performance art speech, at moments addressing the empty chair as if it was President Obama.
And many loved it. Business Insider called it a “bizarre, strange and somewhat incredible all in one.” Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher even gave it backhanded praise:
As a political speech, Eastwood’s address was a hot mess, but as performance art, it was riveting, and while the empty chair bit came off as disrespectful in the beginning, Clint and the chair had better chemistry than the ticket they were shilling for.
How did AP writer Derrik J. Lang describe it? It was a “bizarre, rambling endorsement of Mitt Romney“ that turned out to be an ”awkward performance.” And the writer uses plenty of quotes from detractors to back up that assessment.
But what is absent? Any quotes from those who may have liked it. And if this is your only introduction to the speech, that could be a problem. Read the report below:
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Clint Eastwood earned plenty of bad reviews for his latest performance: a bizarre, rambling endorsement of Mitt Romney.
“Clint, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic,” tweeted film critic Roger Ebert as Eastwood ad-libbed Thursday night to an audience of millions – and one empty chair – on stage at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. “He didn’t need to do this to himself. It’s unworthy of him.”
Eastwood carried on a kooky, long-winded conversation with an imaginary President Barack Obama, telling him that he failed to deliver on his promises, and it’s time for Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, to take over.
“Mr. President, how do you handle promises that you have made when you were running for election, and how do you handle them? I mean, what do you say to people?” he said at one point to the empty chair.
Twitter was instantly ablaze with comments mocking the Oscar-winning director of “Unforgiven” and “Million Dollar Baby.”
“Clint has now eclipsed the total word count of his last three films,” tweeted film critic Richard Roeper during the speech, which was intended to last five minutes but went on for nearly 12.
Howard Kurtz, host of CNN’s “Reliable Sources,“ said ”Clint’s empty chair act“ was the ”weirdest convention moment I have ever seen.” Joe Scarborough, the conservative host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,“ declared that ”a great night for Mitt Romney just got sidetracked by Clint Eastwood.”
Minutes after Eastwood began his speech, someone created an (at)InvisibleObama account on Twitter. It has already amassed 30,000 followers and counting.
“I heard that Clint Eastwood was channeling me at the RNC,” tweeted comic actor Bob Newhart, known for his one-sided conversation bits. “My lawyers and I are drafting our lawsuit.”
The 82-year-old actor and director also talked about Oprah Winfrey, Obama’s unfulfilled promise to close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and lawyers. At one point, he referenced dismissing Obama and making a change.
“When somebody doesn’t do the job, you gotta let `em go,” Eastwood said. The tough-guy actor of “Dirty Harry” fame then drew a finger across his throat.
The Obama campaign shot back afterward by tweeting a photo of the back of the president’s chair, with Obama’s head peeking over it, along with the line: “This seat’s taken.”
Eastwood, a fiscal conservative who takes left-leaning stands on social issues such as gay marriage and environmental protections, made waves with conservatives earlier this year when he starred in a Super Bowl spot for Chrysler, a company that benefited from government support. Eastwood, who endorsed Romney earlier this month at a campaign event in Sun Valley, Idaho, and once served as mayor of Carmel, Calif., defended his appearance in the commercial, noting it had nothing to do with his politics.
Inside the convention, the crowd cheered Eastwood’s entrance and shouted his famed catchphrase, “Go ahead, make my day.” But backstage, stern-faced Romney aides winced at times as Eastwood’s remarks stretched on. After his speech, Romney’s camp defended Eastwood.
“He’s an American icon,” Romney spokeswoman Gail Gitcho told CNN’s Piers Morgan. “You can’t look at him at through the same political lens that you would other politicians. He’s Clint Eastwood.”
There was seemingly more discussion Thursday night on Twitter about Eastwood‘s awkward performance than Romney’s actual acceptance speech.
“Is this a segment for `Mrs. Eastwood and Company’?“ asked ”Star Trek” actor Zachary Quinto on Twitter, referencing the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”-like E! reality series starring Eastwood’s wife, Dina.
Several celebrities and comedians lightheartedly hypothesized on the micro-blogging site how Democrats could top the over-the-top routine at their own convention in Charlotte, N.C., next week.
“To restore balance to the universe, Obama must have Tommy Chong onstage at the DNC talking to a steak,” joked Patton Oswalt.
Original “Star Trek” actor George Takei said he was “drafting a DNC speech to (an) imaginary Romney in an empty factory.”
“Saturday Night Live” cast member Seth Myers had an entirely different idea: “(Vice President Joe) Biden has to go shirtless for DNC to top it.”
For Hollywood veteran Eastwood, his chance to rebound likely comes Sept. 21 in more familiar territory. That’s when his next film, the baseball drama “Trouble With the Curve,” opens.
On radio this morning, Glenn Beck said he wasn’t a fan of the speech and panned it. But what do you think of Eastwood’s speech?

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 9:00amHe’s 82 years old. But one thing is telling: The left was finally able to find criticism with one speaker out of all of the RNC speech givers. They had to wait three days, all the while hoping they could find something to relieve them of all that angst they harbor. So I say to them: Well…are you gonna draw those pistols, or whistle Dixie?

Look! It was not what I expected, but the man is clearly no politician and when I’ve seen he speak off the scrip before its much the same. Clint is really at heart a down to earth Joe and not an elitist snob of the Left. He‘s up in years and he’s got nothing to lose here. Besides, overall he made some good points.

Your exactly right. He could have given the same speech and gig with the chair and they’d all hail it the best performance of the year. Clint would have finally sealed the deal with Hollywood and be remembered for all time. Now however and going forward, expect to see less of his movies aired on the cable channels. He’s going out with a bang for sure, its up to us to remember what he has done here and celebrate his courage and honesty in speaking up….maybe a lil too late but better than never as they say.

I was glad to see him again and thought he did a good job. He was fun. His “Go ahead, make my day,” is still a hit with the people after all these years and the people loved him. I heard a lot of cheering for him. He didn’t cuss which is unlike what I would expect from any DNC comedian. The closest was, “I can’t tell him to do that to himself.” LOL

He made some points that were not mentioned by others and besides I think he will get the grouip of Ron Paul supporters and some independents for Romney. The media is being ridiculous over this and the conservatives and liberals need to take a pill. With some of the people that strut out for Obama in Hollywood, they really need to stay quiet on this. With regards to the conservatives, be grateful that a man who did not need to do this who happens to be respected by quite a few people had the courage to put his views on the line here. Posted on August 31, 2012 at 2:07pmClint is “the man” and I enjoyed his contribution to the GOP convention. I was a bit disappointed he hesitated and stuttered so often, but assumed he was trying to say to us “it’s hard to say these things” to the empty chair (obama, an empty chair and an empty suit) but they were all things that needed to be said:::
Like: “It’s time for someone else.“ ”Didn’t close gitmo to keep from trying terrorists in NY”; “Sent troops to Afgan. before asking Russia about their 10 yrs”.: ” Attorney’s are not good Presidents, they argue too much”: “It’s time for a Business Man now”: “Step aside & you can use smaller plane”: “Let ‘em go when they’re not doing their job” . of course the remarks about that to do to yourself (bidens favorite word)
Everything that needed to be addressed was said by Clint. No one else would have said most of this and I got a big laugh out of it. Listened to the re-play on internet and it was even more funny than it was last night. Lighten up folks, this was an actor doing his thing, and it was funny.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 4:12pm“Simply put, Eastwood’s job was to make it OK to laugh at President Obama, and to vote against him without worrying that one might be a racist for firing the first black president. There were two principal themes:
1. President Obama has failed the nation.
2. He presents an image as a nice guy, but maybe he isn’t really so nice.
The key to delivering these messages is to somehow escape being labeled as “mean” or “racist.”
Clint Eastwood occupies a special place in the modern American mind. His long career embodies, persistence (the spaghetti western exile during which he created an archetype, “the man with no name” despite being shunned by Hollywood as a failed star of a defunct Western TV show – Rawhide), fearlessness (Dirty Harry – a masterpiece that was immediately recognized by fans, and which took most critics years to appreciate because of its politically incorrect message), and only later, after decades of producing and directing, truth-telling master artist.
Americans can hear hard messages coming from Clint. He has a certain immunity that comes with being old and beloved. Yes, some of his sentences did not complete themselves. Yes, he was a bit doddering. yes, Yes F yourself jokes were crude. Grandpa sometimes embarrasses the family at birthdays and anniversaries by bringing up uncomfortable topics. But everyone also loves Grandpa, and realizes he tells the truth because he hasn’t got that much longer with us, and doesn’t give a damn anymore w

Every one of Eastwood’s comments made sense. Some of them very hilariously dry — such as the comment about Oprah crying.
Just because the Left didn’t “get” Eastwood doesn‘t mean he didn’t make his points — and make them in style. The Left is in panic mode because they realize that once people start laughing openly at Obama, it’s all over.

We are uncomfortable when we see those who were once larger than life reduced to human status. The elderly are perhaps the most neglected segment of our society. Somehow when you get old, wrinkly and stooped, when you sometimes mix up your grandchildren’s names, lose your ability to drive, and your voice becomes weak, the thing for you to do is hide away so that those around you can maintain the belief that we are forever young, vibrant and invincible.
Nowhere is this more evident in elite Hollywood circles where there is no such thing as aging gracefully and “nature” is a political crusade, not an inevitable process.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 8:53amMr. Eastwood is an American Icon who’s recognition & accomplishments span generations, as well as holding a political office.
If you knew Mr. Eastwood through his work, what you saw last night was his style at age???
If you didn’t get it…… your loss. – His intention? But surely, you made his night!
Speaking softly comes in many styles.
Thank Mr. Eastwood!

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 12:16pmwell said.. at times it seemed that he was fighting for words but he is a real individual whose accomplishments speak for themselves.. His ability to continue to produce incredible work at his age is fantastic.. My parent in their 80′s often fought for the words and may have times seemed uncomfortable speaking but that is problem with age. Clint did just fine and as much as like Glen.. he is not always right.. he gets it wrong sometimes and this is one of those times.. I would have much rather had Clint than Sarah, Tim Tebow, or any other of the surprise guests people were talking about..

Well spoken, Zoe !
Mr. Eastwood has always been a slow speaker with a voice as soft as a whisper. He has always chosen his words with care. I saw the same man I’ve always seen, just not as youthful as Rowdy.
…
Mr. Eastwood, you made my day by coming to this event and standing proud as a patriot so in love with his country that you would risk inevitable criticism for being there.
YOUR SPEECH WAS THE MOST INVENTIVE OF THEM ALL.

It is going to be interesting to see how they switch during the DNC….gaurantee they will be on their knees worshiping him as their MSM has thrown their support and soul behind the Democratic party.

Remember when you did the same thing to those War photos to make Israel look bad? “Bizarre”
And remember how it is that you are actually trying as a news organization to get one side or the other elected? Now THAT’s “Bizarre”

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 8:47amIm sorry but he really did look old out there last night. I kept bitting my lip hoping he wouldn’t choke. I love Mr. Eastwood, and it just came off as a bit odd. Of coarse it had a couple of funny moments but anyone who says at some point during the speech you didn’t think “man what he trying to say” then I think you just smiled and played along. Although I will say in some ways he was better and more believable then some of the other actors on stage last night. In all he still remains a legend to me, but in honesty I think he should retire from doing anymore public speaking gigs.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 9:10amI disagree. I think that the “empty chair” reminded me of Bob Newhart, the comedian who would carry on a conversation with an imaginary person; pretty artful in my opinion. Plus, the “empty chair” really captures the spirit with which Obama has conducted his presidency—–an “empty suit” sitting in an “empty chair”. I would really like to take a tally of how often Obama has actually sat in that Oval Chair—-excepts for Photo opts——he’s always out campaigning, or partying with the Hollywood glitterati! I doubt he has spent anytime in that Chair doing his job!!! He loves campaigning—-but actually governing? Forgetabboutit!

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 3:57pmSome of the people who are dissing Clint, I’m really surprised any of you have the nerve to be so critical of a gentleman who still has a lot to offer. I think some of the hesitation in speech was built-in to make us think he was trying to choose his words carefully because they were critical and oh so true. I’ve said them hundreds of times, with no one listening. Show some respect for God’s sake.

Wow way to show your intelligence and act no different then the mean trolls from the Progressive left. Well you must be mad at Mr. Glenn Beck as well because this morning on his radio show he echoed my exact same opinion! OOPS! Do be sheep PLEASE! Word is that Romney‘s people didn’t like Eastwood’s performance either. I know it’s standard operating procedure to make everything into a liberal witch hunt (just ask Todd Akin, who didn’t seem to be aware that it was members of his own party that were asking him to step down), but the truth is that many in Camp Romney (despite what they are saying on the record) were pissed.

It was in rather poor taste. The rest of the event was fantastic. Fox hosts talked through some of the best speeches telling of Romney’s help to families in difficult situations. I got so tired of Fox that I switched to c-span.

He did seem off, and I didn’t like that he was disrespectful. He did make some very good points, but they might have been overshadowed by other remarks. Sad that it has given the MSM fodder.
