Two Students ‘Accidentally’ Shot at LA High School

Two Students ‘Accidentally’ Shot at LA High School

From KTLA in Los Angeles:

Gardena High School is on lockdown after a shooting on campus that left at least three students wounded.

The shooting was reported in the 1300 block of West 182nd Street around 10:30 a.m. [Pacific time] Tuesday.

Gardena police say 3 students have been wounded. At least one person has been transported to a hospital.

There are reports that police know who the gunman is, but are not releasing his name, according to Gardena Police spokesman Lt. Steve Prendargast.

He is described only as a 18-year old boy. Police believe he is a student. He is believed to still be on campus.

Parents are urged to remain at home and wait for information on when they can pick up their children.

UPDATE:

Police have arrested the suspected gunman after he released a group of hostages, which included students and a teacher.

UPDATE II:

KTLA is now reporting the number of wounded stands at two (not three), and the shooting is being ruled an accident:

Gardena police say two students were wounded. Both were taken to a local hospital.

One was said to be in critical condition. The other student’s condition was described as serious.

Police with guns drawn surrounded a classroom as students walked outside with their hands in the air. One young man was then placed on the ground and handcuffed. [...]

A Los Angeles Unified School District official says the shooting was accidental. The official says the student brought a gun to school in his backpack, which fell onto the ground and apparently discharged.

A teacher is being credited with talking to the student inside a classroom and convincing him to cooperate with police. [Emphasis added]

UPDATE III:

According to the Associated Press, the injured parties are students from the high school, and were wounded by a single bullet:

A Los Angeles police official says the two students wounded in a shooting at a high school were hit by one bullet that was fired when a gun in a backpack apparently went off by accident.

Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon says a 15-year-old Gardena High student was shot in the head Tuesday and is hospitalized in critical condition.

The other victim is a 15-year-old who was hit in the neck. Gannon describes it as a “through-and-through” wound.

Gannon says the student who brought the gun said he was sorry after it went off, and a teacher in the classroom said it appeared to be an accident.

The student with the gun ran to another room and police took him into custody.

UPDATE IV:

A 15-year-old girl with a head wound underwent hours of surgery at Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, said Dr. Gail V. Anderson Jr. A 15-year-old boy was in serious condition with neck and shoulder wounds.

According KTLA, this isn’t the first time the student brought a gun to school. One student, who called herself a “good friend” of the gun carrier, said he regularly brought the gun to school for protection after getting in a fight.

Despite the incident, many at the school praised the student suspect.

“He was a sweetheart, always smiling and hugging people,” classmate Para Ross told KTLA.
This isn’t the first time Gardena High School has experienced such an incident. The school was the scene of a shooting in February 2002, when three assailants tried to hold up two students in an outdoor area. Two students were shot.

In the past five years, two students have been expelled for firearms violations at Gardena High.

They should allow prayer in schools again…..if only so the students can administer last rights to each other. This is what happens to a civilaztion devoid of “real” morality (not the fake liberal feel good kind) and when parents are not taking responsibility for the kind of education kids are not getting in government schools. Expect more. These kids are frustrated and angry because they don’t think anyone really cares about them. They are being raised by TV, video games, movies; Comedy Central is their news station, and parents are afraid to give limits and discipline for fear of legal action and abuse charges. We have allowed state control over parental control. This is the result. Live with it…or change it.

Doesn’t matter if they were “around” or not — he’ll still find a way to make it their fault. Not that it IS their fault, but like a really good progressive, he will FIND a way to make it their fault. What a sad state this nation is in. I think there’s more to the story, too, and that someone should do an investigation. But, it likely as not will NOT happen because progressives run the country and conservative people are “too dumb” to lead or even know how to read a book. Not really, but that’s what the progressives have convinced themselves of.

God help us all. When will we learn? When will parents understand that it is far better to have a stay at home parent rather than the extra big house and all the new toys? When will marriage and family togetherness become important again? We really have to take a deep breath and start doing the fundamentals right again.
We seem to have lost that solid foundation so necessary for a society to flourish in peace with one another and hardly anyone cares. It is “old fashioned” it is a “warped conservative view”. It is a “warped morality” that prescribes the old fashioned family togetherness and Creator worshipping type of life…where family members take care of one another, a parent is there to take care of the kids when they go and come from school, marriages were permanent and meant something. If we want this country to be strong and value driven again we need to take a step back and reassess our paths. For anyone who thinks that blowing off our God has nothing to do with this decline and says that Christianity was not a building block upon which this country was solidly formed, they would do well to educate themselves. EVERY STATE CONSTITUTION MENTIONS OUR CREATOR, GOD, JESUS OR CHRISTIAN…EVERY STATE! EDUCATE YOURSELF AND REDEDICATE YOURSELF TO A BETTER AMERICA.

If the gun belongs to a dad make the dad have some responsibilty and 18 is not a boy, it is an adult just ask the 18 year olds in the service.

A few things to remember as this unfolds:
Violence is not exclusive to the U.S. (do a search on school shootings… Europeans can’t take the moral high ground on this one).
Using guns for violence is not exclusive to the U.S. Watch the damn news.
More people are murdered by gun toting, machete wielding, stone throwing agents of states that have disarmed the unwashed masses than by gun wielding nut jobs. The number one cause of untimely death will forever be political bodies and religious zealots. Read a damn history book.
In a free society, there is always an element of risk. Come to think of it, life itself assumes risk as no man’s day is guaranteed. Not to be flippant, but bad things do happen to good people… and bad people… and no govt. is going to able to stop that. Govt. can, however, limit your ability to take risks and exercise rights. Just ask wuss rep. Peter King.

I am not going to defend homicidal behavior. That will be for the perp and his reps to engage in. Over the years, I’ve learned that there is great wisdom in letting cooler heads prevail. When you have leaders and a constituency that knee jerks and believes in never letting a tragedy go to waste, you tend to get the govt. you deserve. Unleash the hounds….

      MiddleClassProphet -

Imagine that! A gun inside a backpack shoots 3 people all by itself!

      Think for a minute:

An 18 year old student had a handgun (long gun or rifle would have been too big to fit in backpack).

He broke his first law right there because CA State law does not allow anyone under 21 to own handguns.

He brought it onto school property concealed in a backpack. Another couple of laws violated.

The school only does random searches and only randomly selects students to wand with metal detector. (Oops!)

The gun, which was probably illegal and may have been “modified” by the previous owner, did not have the safety on (violation); had a magazine in (violation) and a bullet in the chamber (violation).

At this point, he was literally up in the 80% risk area for something going wrong.

And yes, the student was responsible and knew it because he apologized before fleeing the scene and taking a bunch of other students and a teacher as hostage.

No, they shouldn’t. The nice thing about rights is that no matter what opinion you may have of them, you have no power to take them away. middleclassprophet, a semi-automatic weapon is not an assault weapon. I know those were two separate posts, but I want to make sure you’re properly educated before speaking.

For example, my concealed-carry weapon is semi-automatic; if it were banned it would be much tougher to defend myself and others against a deranged idiot exercising his free-will to kill innocent people. Like the Arizona shooter. Don’t be fooled into thinking a ban on semi-automatic weapons would make them unavailable either. The ban would do the same thing the 18 amendment did for alcohol; make them unregulated, untaxed, but still available to those who seek them.

Let’s put this whole second amendment thing to bed. Here is what it says:

“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

As I read it, it is the right of the PEOPLE to keep and bear arms and this right shall not be infringed. The militia is merely the by-product of people owning firearms. They also needed those firearms for hunting and defense. There is no way a reasonable reading of these lines would infer that owning firearms was for the sole purpose of creating a militia.

There is a lot of evidence that this “Kid” did not know how to engage a safety on the gun. Well that is what is being talked about in the News now. He did not really drop the gun in the back pack but dropped the back pack after the gun went off.

One report I heard on Fox News was that the gunman claimed he was trying to put the safety on and the gun went off. What happened to the security at this school that “every student” is wanded for weapons and backpacks checked before going to class. Is the policy only enforced on those students at the beginning of the school day? Apparently so the security that parents thought they were getting failed again.

Is not this the school district the same one that wants to build a New Age themed campus with a Multi-million dollar price tag?

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Hmmm…. setting aside the whole “well regulated militia” thing, have you noticed that the amendment does not say that you should be able to have whatever kinds of arms you want? After all, the right to free speech is qualified for the purposes of public order in situations such as the famous yelling-fire-in-a-crowded-theater scenario. Yet, somehow you think you should be able to own and carry any kind of gun you want?

Actually, it doesn’t matter what the Second Amendment does or does not say about guns, or automatic guns or assault weapons.

The student was 18 years old. I checked twice and California law does not allow those under the age of 21 to own handguns. That leads me to believe it was either stolen or hot.

      He was on school property.

He had a gun concealed in a backpack that had a bullet in the chamber, had a magazine in place and did not have the safety on.

Once the accidental discharge happened, he apologized and ran out to another room where he took the students and teachers hostage. Once again, no bearing on the Second Amendment.

The issue of assault rifles or the wording of the Second Amendment is just a red herring and has nothing to do with the incident.

“For those of you defending the right to own an assault weapon, you need to have your priorities adjusted. There is no reason for ANYONE to own an assault weapon. The 2nd amendment says “nada” about that.”

Assault weapons are select fire and full auto by definition. Your scare tactics on that front were exposed when others tried them starting in the 1990′s. Sorry guy, you lose that one too, due to lacking understanding about the definition of the thing you wish to ban.

And yes, everybody should have free unfettered access to real assault weapons, without permits or requirements. And I DO mean the real assault weapons, full auto select fire, thank you very much.

The 2nd Amendment is a individual right guaranteed by the Constitution. It makes no distinction between types or uses for those arms. In fact, individuals owned and carried the same weapons as the Continental Army, and some people even owned cannons.

In California a mini-30 (you used to be able to buy these at Wal-Mart) with an altered stock is considered an “assault rifle”. Have one and you are unwittingly a felon. Get caught with one and you no longer have the right to own a gun and are a convicted felon (even if you dont do any prison/jail time). Now you cant get a job or protect your family…without ever having committed an act of moral injustice.

All the gun laws on the books are to no avail in this situation and most other similar situations. You can’t legislate away the criminals, the stupid, the stupid criminals and the criminally stupid. It should be legal to shoot people who steal cars, invade homes or molest children – and you need to have a firearm available to do that.

      Not if you only wing’em.

I don’t ever want to shoot anybody, and I would never pull the trigger unless I was in danger of bodily harm but the real issue here is the state (in this case CA, but also Chicago, DC etc.) forces millions of otherwise harmless, peace loving citizens to be vulnerable to bad guys don’t care what the state says.

It’s not about this or any other particular shooting. It’s about all of them, combined with the thousands of abductions, robberies, rapes, home invasions assaults and murders that happen each year. It’s about the changed character of society today. Too many trusting people every day find themselves not just the victim of criminals, but of starry eyed politicians and bureaucrats who do not know what they are dealing with, or if they do, they have suits or details to cover them.

There there’s this: “A teacher is being credited with talking to the student inside a classroom and convincing him to cooperate with police”. If it were an accident why would it be necessary to convince him to cooperate? It also seems like there are too many officers for just and accident.

The Progs will probably call for “safety guns” where one pulls the trigger, waits 10 seconds, pulls the trigger again, wait 30 seconds, sign your name in a little “UPS-pad”-like window in the weapons’ butt, pull the trigger again, wait another 30 seconds, the gun uses built-in cellphone to call 911, sounds a loud siren, then finally fires after pulling the trigger one last time after an additional 30 seconds have passed. Average elapsed time from first trigger pull to actual firing: 120 seconds.

Missed and need a second shot? Gotta wait 24 hours to allow for a peaceful resolution. Can’t be hasty.

As far as convincing the kid to cooperate, don‘t you think you’d be a little rattled and scared after just accidently shooting one of your classmates in the head? Don’t you think the kid was feeling a little desperate?

      Interesting.

Let’s see how many “things” were wrong with this whole “incident”.

      – The firearm was on school grounds. Oops! Strike 1.

      - The gun was in a backpack. Obviously not a rifle or any type of long gun, which would be too big to fit in a backpack. If it was a sawed off shotgun, it would have been buckshot, not a bullet. So, it’s clearly a handgun.

In my state, you have to be 21 to own handguns and from what I can tell from a brief Internet search, this is also true in California. Strike 2!!

      - Since Glock is the only manufacturer that does not have a safety on their guns (the owner is the SAFETY) , it would have to be either a Glock (serious firepower) or another type of handgun being transported with a load magazine in it, the safety off and a bullet in the chamber. I’m willing to bet that there was no trigger lock on it, either.

If the gun was a “Saturday night special” type, it may have been modified by the previous owner and had a faulty safety or a “modified” firing pin, which could result in an accidental discharge, but the student is clearly already in serious trouble and having a hot weapon will just add to it.

      Strike 3!!! and 4 and 5 and possibly 6!!!!

Oh yeah, and then he held a class as hostages. I’ll count those students all as one. That brings us up to 7.

If either of the two students who were seriously wounded dies, well, then, the deep kimchee really begins.

My prayers go out to the two victims for their full and complete recovery. And to their families during this horrific, stressful time.
