At Least Nine Dead in Second Day of Afghan Riots Over Koran Burning

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Anger over the burning of the Muslim holy book at a Florida church fueled a second day of deadly violence half a world away in Afghanistan, where demonstrators set cars and shops ablaze Saturday in a riot that killed nine protesters, officials said.

The church’s desecration of the Quran nearly two weeks ago has outraged millions of Muslims and others worldwide, fueling anti-American sentiment that is further straining ties between the Afghan government and the West.

The uproar even brought violence to the normally peaceful city of Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan on Friday, where a crowd of protesters — apparently infiltrated by insurgents — stormed a U.N. compound in an outpouring that left four Afghan protesters and seven foreign U.N. employees dead.

In an unrelated attack that nonetheless demonstrated the kind of violence plaguing Afghanistan nearly a decade after the U.S. invaded to oust the Taliban and hunt al-Qaida, two suicide attackers disguised as women in blue burqas blew themselves up and a third was gunned down at a NATO base on the outskirts of Kabul.

The Quran was burned March 20, but many Afghans only found out about it when Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the desecration four days later. The burning took place at the Dove Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, the same church where the Rev. Terry Jones had threatened to destroy a copy of the holy book last year but initially backed down.

On Saturday, hundreds of Afghans carrying long sticks and holding copies of the Quran over their heads marched through Kandahar, the largest city in southern Afghanistan and the cradle of the insurgency. The crackle of gunfire could be heard throughout the city, which was blanketed by thick black smoke.

Security forces shot in the air to disperse the crowd, said Zalmai Ayubi, a spokesman for the provincial governor. It’s unclear how the protesters were slain, he said.

The governor’s office in Kandahar province issued a statement saying that nine protesters were killed and 81 others were injured in the demonstration that turned into a riot. Seventeen people, including seven armed men, have been arrested, the statement said.

The governor’s office claims demonstrators were incited by extremists who joined the group and set property ablaze.

“Some wicked and destructive people placed themselves amongst the protesters and started rioting throughout the entire Kandahar city,” the governor’s office said. “The enemies of the people and country also burned down the furniture and a bus at a ladies’ high school in Kandahar and destroyed some other properties.

Shops and restaurants throughout the city were shuttered and routes leading into the city were blocked by security forces.

An Associated Press photographer estimated the crowd at a few thousand and said demonstrators had smashed his camera and roughed up other journalists.

The bloodshed began Friday in Kabul, Herat in western Afghanistan and Mazar-i-Sharif, where thousands flooded the streets.

The seven foreigners killed at the U.N. compound included four Nepalese guards. The other three were identified by officials in their home countries as: Joakim Dungel, a 33-year-old Swede; Lt. Col. Siri Skare, a 53-year-old female pilot from Norway; and Filaret Motco, a 43-year-old Romanian who worked in the political section of the U.N.

Dan McNorton, a spokesman for the U.N. in Kabul, said the organization had no plans to pull out of Afghanistan.

“The U.N. is absolutely committed to remaining in Afghanistan to ensure that the Afghan people receive all the support they deserve from the U.N.,” McNorton said.

Karzai’s office said the president spoke on the telephone Saturday morning with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Karzai asked the secretary-general to extend his condolences to the families of the slain U.N. workers.

He also called on the U.N. to help promote religious tolerance throughout the world to ease friction between people of different faiths. Karzai said Afghan officials were investigating the U.N. attack and would bring the perpetrators to justice.

In Florida, Wayne Sapp, a pastor at the church, called the events “tragic,” but said he did not regret the actions of his church.

“I in no way feel like our church is responsible for what happened,” Sapp said in a telephone interview on Friday.Afghan authorities suspect insurgents melded into the mob outside the U.N. compound and they announced the arrest of more than 20 people, including a militant they suspect was the ringleader of the assault. The suspect was an insurgent from Kapisa province, a hotbed of militancy about 250 miles (400 kilometers) southeast of the city, said Rawof Taj, deputy provincial police chief.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid sent a text message to The Associated Press on Saturday denying that the insurgency was responsible for killing the U.N. workers.

Demonstrators have alleged that the four protesters were killed by Afghan security forces. Interior Ministry spokesman Zemeri Bashary said Saturday that a delegation of high-ranking Afghan officials was being sent to the city to investigate what happened during the demonstration in which seven vehicles, including a police vehicle, were burned.

“When the demonstration started, the number of people increased every minute to around 5,000,” Bashary said. “The police did take action, but we are investigating how these casualties occurred. Were the steps and actions by police adequate or not?”

Bashary also gave reporters details of Saturday‘s attack on NATO’s Camp Phoenix, a base on the east side of Kabul that’s used to train Afghan security forces.

He said three armed insurgents wearing suicide bomb vests arrived at a main gate at the base around 6:45 a.m. Two of the attackers opened fire and then detonated their vests of explosives, Bashary said. The third opened fire and was killed by NATO forces. The body of a fourth person, an Afghan man at the scene, has not been identified. Three NATO service members were injured.

The gate at the base was scorched from the explosions. An AP reporter at the scene saw the remains of at least one of the attackers dangling from the gate. Police officer Mohammad Shakir told the AP that two suicide bombers were clad in blue burqas, the all-encompassing coverings worn by many women in Afghanistan.

As I said in a post to The Blaze yesterday, the Koran burning was wrong because it incited violence. Beyond that point, however, is a further and much more relevant one. As has been pointed out, these folks, Warriors for Mohamed, a.k.a. Islamic militant extremists, will use any excuse at all, or none at all to be violent, destroy things and cause havoc. One wonders what might have happened if a Torah or Christian bible had been burned, or even thousand burned? Nothing like this, that is for certain! So, the Pastor’s act of burning the Koran, wrong as doing so might have been, served a greater purpose: EXPOSED ISLAMIC THOUGHT for what it apparently is!

Meanwhile, they have been slaughtering Christians for years who did nothing. Islam is love by eliminating those you hate, it is peace by subjucating your enemies. I am so sick and tired of being force fed this nonsense that Muslims are just like Christians. Islam is the antithesis of Christianity, and more than likely is a creation of Satan in response to the success of Christianity.

Dont give me the bloody history of Christianity, first off, that whole line of argument is exagerated in its scope, and it wasnt Christianity rather it was States and Nations using the church as a guise and motivator to achieve political and personal goals. That is why the founding fathers tried to seperate church and state, to protect the church, NOT the state, as it seems to be interpreted today. It was NEVER the constitutional goal to keep God out of governance, but to keep mans governance out of the church.

The world is close to realizing the great conflict, and currently, our leaders are playing for the wrong team. Seriously, we are arming radical muslim elements in the middle east, while at the same time trying every way possible to circumvent the 2nd amendment and disarm our own law abiing, God loving/fearing citizens?

WTF are we doing in Afghanistan? Let them eat poppies. They’re clearly not ready for the blessings of liberty we are attempting to give them. Hell, we‘re not even ready for all the blessings our constitution affords us or we wouldn’t keep trampling on it..

Just tell the Afghanis we’ll leave them alone if they leave us alone… but make it clear that the next time we determine that a weapons-of-mass-destruction incident originated from Afghanistan, we’re not going to send our boots back to their ground. No… if we have to go back there, they won’t hear us coming until the air temperature starts heating up to 4,000 degrees around them.

No doubt that between Libya, Iran, and N.Korea, one of them will test our resolve, but once demonstrated, the rest will pay closer attention if we actually had the will to use our weapons the way they’re meant to be used.

Middle-Easterners have no such compunction about using whatever weapons they can get their hands on – that‘s why we call their IED’s “Improvised” Explosive Devices – because they are homemade from whatever they have available. We have far greater weapons available but we still use rubber bullets under some rules of engagement!

Until we have the will to end these wars quickly, our enemies will drag them out as long as they can. Ho Chi Minh demonstrated taught our enemies a valuable lesson about will and determination – a lesson which unfortunately we have yet to learn. He never won a single battle in Vietnam, but he had the will to outlast us and he won. When we send our troops to defend a foreign land, while caring more about our enemies’ collateral damage than they do… they’ve already won… it just takes us thousands of dead Americans and billions of dollars to admit it.

Libya is already turning into a stalemate that could trap us for years because we do not value our own soldier’s lives enough. We care more about protecting our enemies’ non-combatant citizens than our enemies do. They hide in their mosques to shoot at us; but did anyone notice that Gadhafi didn’t hesitate to utterly destroy all the mosques that Libyan rebels were hiding in? How many Quran’s went up in flames or were blown to bits – And where’s the outcry from the Muslim world over that???? Did they behead any innocent Muslims for that?

We cannot win wars by fighting only by our own rules – we must fight by the enemies’ rules or worse – until they want no part of conflict with us. Before they can ever learn to love us, they first must be taught to respect us. Until they respect us (& yes, that includes fearing us), then everything else is just another futile ‘Progressivism experiment” that wastes American lives and treasure.

In spite of all the “peace-speak,” Muslims can’t hide the fact that they are a cruel and barbaric people. And, their barbarism is barely a scratch beneath the surface of their pseudo-peace-speak.

I’m glad they are so volatile! Who they really are is constantly in our faces ……. No Room For Doubt! It’s just so very sad for anyone who happens to be in their way during their rabid-madness-attacks.

It will be interesting to see which side Karzai is really on.The sooner these guys are marked and identified the faster Afghanistan and the US can part ways peacefully with a stable relationship.

      1. Burqas should be banned in our country (instead there is talk that our women in uniform should wear headscarves). They give the jihadists an advantage when they attack.
      2. Obama is a traitor to his position as CiC. First, he aided and abetted a revolution in Egypt which has spread throughout the entire ME, putting our country and our troops at great risk. Second, he is losing the war in Afghanistan. Third, his inability to lead a war has destabalized Pakistan as well.
      3. Jones and Sapp are evil men, and should be openly shunned by all leading Christian pastors in the U.S.
      4. Our major problem is Obama and his cohorts in Congress. Unless we get rid of them, we will NEVER defeat Islam. We are headed for a Chavista type of government, namely, a communist regime with strong ties to Islamists. If any good-hearted American thinks we can defeat that unholy alliance via the ballot box, you are absolutely clueless. It will not happen, America. Either we fight or we die. Those are the two choices (with all due respect to Glenn).

What absurdity it is these people are acting out rioting over a book being burned. That is all that it is since they treat the Bible and Torah as such… just books. Could you imagine if christians acted out after all the churches that have been violated by muslim extremists, if anything calls for a riot would be when a church has been destroyed, vandalized etc my muslim extremists.

Sorry I am going to say it, we are way passed the time of waiting for the middle east to be turned into glass! This will only get worse with all the uprisings and take note you are witnessing the beginning of the first true war of the 21st century!

They have no idea what it teaches except for what they are told. Very similar to the Dark Ages when only a certain few men could read the Scriptures in their printed language of the time and simply told people what it said….very dangerous !!!!!!

Let me see if I’ve got this right: Some dolt ‘preacher’ in Florida puts a book on ‘trial’ and finds the BOOK guilty. The punishment for the book is burning it. He burned paper, ink and cardboard. Therefore: Karzai, whom we are there to help, feels the need to inform his country of this. So the natives get offended and start lobbing off heads and rioting. What a world.

If you are a non-Christian and you want to burn the Quran knowing that you are putting our troops and Westerners abroad, esp. Americans at risk, well then go ahead. One day you will answer to God, like drug pushers or other criminals who never see at first hand the deaths for which they are responsible.

If you are a Christian, heck no, you have no right to defile the name of Christ, like those so-called pastors did. Christ did not call us to offend or hate or commit acts of aggression against other religions. I don’t know about you, but I do care deeply about the brothers in Pakistan who were martyred because of those two unrighteous, self-serving cowards. I care deeply for our troops, who will now have to face an even more hostile civilian population in Afghanistan.

I cannot believe some of the reactions on this blog. How long have we known that burning the Quran is anathema to Muslims? We Christians feel indignant when the left compares us to Muslims, AND YET we react just as irrationally when as Christians or as a Christianized society we expect Muslims to behave like us. We know they are barbaric, unjust and easily enraged. We know they hate our guts, and more importantly, we know they can harm us. We need to fight them in a way that minimizes our losses, not behave like beasts by needlessly stoking the fires of religious hatred.

Kryptonite had it right; the people at the Florida church should be asking themselves if it was worth putting our troops at risk, worth people getting killed over. Yes, the fanatical extremists don’t need much reason to act out violently, so why deliberately provoke them? They burn US flags, burn effigies of our leaders, kill captured civilians and troops, blow themselves up in the name of Allah, target Christians and Jews around the world but, as Christians, we don’t form retaliatory mobs for revenge. When was the last time you heard about an angry mob of Christians beheading Muslims for trashing the Bible? Or burning down a mosque with kids inside because someone called Jesus names?
What I want to know is how did a Christian church come to the point where they thought burning the Koran would be something Jesus would admire? There is no gospel precedent for this. I know the story of Jesus turning over the moneychangers’ tables in the temple. I know He told his followers to turn the other cheek although all of them had been taught an ‘eye for an eye’. He never sent his disciples out to insult other religions to evangelize. He came to teach the Gospel of love with love.
Radical Muslim extremists don’t think rationally. Their government and religion are melded together. They have no fear of death and believe that they will be rewarded for anything they do to promote the spread of Islam, even if it means taking the lives of innocents or blowing themselves up.
At some points we have to defend ourselves or others from radical Muslim terrorists, but to deliberately stir these people up with inflammatory actions and words is not only futile but puts innocent lives at risk.
There is no defense for the actions of the Afghan mob, but neither is there a defense for inciting the violence by taunting them.

@ KRYPTONITE………….I hear what your sayin’ and I kind of agree to a point but you must remember that Christians were being killed, harassed, churches and Bibles being burned for years by Muslims. For years Christians have been tortured and killed by Muslims in some of these countries that do not tolerate Christianity. I don‘t necessarily think the answer is running around burning Qu’rans but I do believe we need to stand against this evil at every turn and in every way. To me this may mean speaking truth that very well may incite violence on their part. But I ask you, did Jesus do anything less to speak truth and stand against evil? I understand what you are sayin’ again and agree with you to a point, but I do not want us to turn around and accept the extreme amount of hypocrisy that exists on this issue and make the pastor in Florida the scapegoat for murder. Those “people” need to be called into account no matter who does what to a Qu’ran. Again, ask yourself how many people have been tortured, killed, abused, raped because they were Christians being persecuted by Muslims and how many homes, churches and Bibles have been burned by the same people throwing their little fit now.

He said woe to you if every man speaks well of you! That is why he said the world would hate us because of Him. The truth is offensive, it is the sword he spoke of that would bring division, not peace. However, I strongly agree with you that we are not called to hate or to be physically the aggressor. Watch, I see a couple of problems with your analysis. First, while it is true that most Muslims are non-Arab, it’s the Arab Muslims who have the black gold, and are therefore a real threat to Western civilization. Second, it is true that both imams and corrupt church leaders have used the common people for their nefarious purposes throughout history. However, the central figures of the Quran and the Bible are like night and day. Muslims who follow the teachings of Muhammad become radicalized. Christians who follow the teachings of Christ become civilized.

Watchtheotherhand: “The one thing I would strongly disagree with you is that you said Christ did not call us to offend. I believe he most certainly did call us to offend.”

No, Watch!! Jesus said He — and by extension we — would be a stumbling block to many. The truth does not offend; the truth sets people free. It is the darkness in human nature that is offended by the truth. In any case we are called to speak the truth in love (meaning God’s love, which is not necessarily lovey-dovey), since most of us will be offended by the truth to some degree given that we are all sinners. To use an analogy in your field, it’s the difference between removing a cancerous tumor and stabbing someone. They both hurt a lot, but they are not equivalent actions.

The Bible says that if we offend anybody in word or deed, we must repent and if necessary, offer restitution. Those so called pastors don’t even feel remorse. The blood of martyrs is on their hands and cries out to God. Those wolves in sheep’s skin need to get saved and stop leading others astray with their false teachings.

As to burning the Quran, how is that speaking or preaching the truth? That was an act of aggression and inner rage. If you can’t picture Jesus burning the Quran, then don’t rationalize it, brother.

Australia says NO – Second time she has done this!

She’s done it again. She sure isn’t backing down on her hard line stance and one has to appreciate her belief in the rights of her native countrymen. A breath of fresh air to see someone lead. I wish some leaders would step up in Canada & USA.

Australian Prime Minister does it again! This woman should be appointed Queen of the World. Truer words have never been spoken.

It took a lot of courage for this woman to speak what she had to say for the world to hear. The retribution could be phenomenal, but at least she was willing to take a stand on her and Australia’s beliefs. The whole world needs a leader like this!

      > Prime Minister Julia Gillard – Australia

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

Separately, Gillard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying she supported spy agencies monitoring the nation’s mosques.
Quote: ‘IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT.
Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.’

‘This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom’

‘We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!’

‘Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools.
If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.’

Huh… and this rioting is found justifiable. So, theoretically, next time a bible is burned, it’ll be okay for me to declare a Crusade on the perpetrator?

So Muslims can burn our flag, burn our Holy Bible, burn down Christian churches, and slaughter Christians… And Christians do not retaliate with violence and death…

Muslims can slander Israel and denounce all Jewish people with threats of death… And the Jewish people do not retaliate with violence and death…

So what exactly is the “Religion of Peace”? The Christian and Jewish faiths in a civilized society or the Muslim faith of Islam?

A picture saves a thousand words, and Muslims worldwide are clearly painting their “picture” for the rest of us to see… Islam is definitely NOT the “Religion of Peace.”

Even with hindsight, seeing the abhorrent response to burning the Quran, there are those of you in here who would do it. Glenn Beck should be very proud.

Want to hear a big lie? DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW.

Domestic drilling does NOT increase domestic supply. That oil belongs to EXXON – NOT the United States of America (unless we nationalize the oil companies.)

And EXXON WILL SELL IT TO WHOMEVER THEY CHOOSE AT THE HIGHEST price they can get on the WORLD market.

      @ On the Other Hand
Thanks for your comments, it shows that you have the exceptionally open mind of a medically trained advocate of human rights, Hippocratic ethics and constitutional free speech. Bless you (smile) !!
It is interesting that as I have become an outside observer commenting on Blaze remarks; I find it fascinating that someone of your credentials would mistake that and make ad hominim insults. (smile) By the way I wish you were my urologist. Thus, I am preparing a three legged stool sample for you. (grin)
And, I hope you make enough medicare income to break even by 2015.
