‘At War With Islam’: Military Instructor Suspended Over Controversial Course Materials

Longtime readers may recall that a firestorm of controversy recently hit the National Defense University’s Joint Staff College over accusations that one of its instructors had been teaching a course that suggested that the United States was “at war with Islam.” Now, Reuters reports that top military brass have relieved the instructor of that course, Lt. Col Matthew A. Dooley, of his duties following a review of the course materials:

Colonel David Lapan, a spokesman for the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Wednesday a review of the course found that “institutional failures and in oversight and judgment” led to the course being modified over time in a way “that portrayed Islam almost entirely in a negative way.”

“The inquiry recommends the course be redesigned to include aspects of U.S. policy and reduce its reliance on external instruction,” Lapan said in a statement. It also recommended improving oversight of course curricula.

“The elective course’s military instructor has been relieved of his instructor duties until his permanent change of station, which was previously planned for 2012,” Lapan said.[...]

Navy Captain John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, said in April that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta was deeply concerned about some of the materials being taught in the course, such as the slide suggesting the United States was at war with Islam.

“That’s not at all what we believe to be the case. We’re at war against terrorism, specifically al Qaeda, who has a warped view of the Islamic faith,” Kirby said.

The course materials themselves have been preserved on Wired’s “Danger Room” blog, and include some of the following slides:

      So, I suppose the simple reading of the Koran will be banned in this course–just like it is in public schools. Little green book = Big TABOO! Better to just ignore the thing. You see the big, nasty, uncomfortable secret is that the Koran itself does not really leave room for the idea of “moderate” Muslims.
      Read it and weep! We are in much more trouble than just having to deal with a handful of Islamists with a “warped view.” Ignoring the truth about what is in this book will not work. When enough people are educated as to the contents of the Koran and the history surrounding it, the problem will start to crumble away….

      According to the story, Panetta is the one behind the removal of a truthful instructor who’s trying to save the lives of our boys by teaching them about our enemy and their motivations.

      Panetta is quilty of aiding and comforting the enemy.Last I checked this was treason.Canning a instructor for education and training wihich is true and accurate,designed to save their lives is tantamount to aiding.I’ve got a great idea next negotiation we have, we can trade him.Hell hes on there side anyway.

      Religion can suck… hard.
      Faith is not necessarily bad… but can be twisted and used as a means to an end.
      And lets be honest here: Many a secular regime piles up bodies,limits freedom of thought and speech and treats human beings as disposable cogs in manners that would make the most nefarious theists blush with shame in their lack of true version in comparison to secular ideologies.
      God or no god, humanity will always find a reason to turn upon itself. That’s why I cannot accept we are the end all, be all of sentient life and the ultimate spiritual being the universe has to offer.
      I find your lack of faith disturbing. (Cue the mystical choke hold)
      Please, explain to me how govts. and cultures without faith and where the state is the ultimate power are “better.” The balance of history would not support such a claim.

      The balance of history would not support such a claim, because there is not balance of history–no country has ever existed that was by majority irreligious.

      Faith is not bad, but having faith for GOOD REASONS is the faith that is to be lauded–believing merely for the sake of believing, with no respect for the VERACITY of the belief is bad policy. And given that this is a requisite COMMON to all religions (all of which make claims about metaphysical existence that they expect to be taken on UNSUBSTANTIATED faith), RELIGION, writ large, is bad policy. It is arbitrary and it’s claims unjustified–because of this, it is possible for people to claim WHATEVER belief that they can imagine as “religious truth” and in so doing elevate what is patent nonsense to the clear thinking, to the special authority granted to mysticism.

      Very good, but the 20th Century alone stands as evidence that secular regimes culminate in he ultimate devaluation of human life. No countries have existed that were irreligous? Umm… the USSR, modern China, modern N. Korea. Yep. HUGE religious bastions of the modern world. And great champions of morality.
      It appears that most, if not all religions, seem to embrace some basic moral tenets (and, granted, the prequisite is that you MUST be a member of the “just us” club to expect the rules actually be honored). Generally, beyond the calls to bow in the proper direction and obey the headman, most religions attempt to assert you should not muck up the life experience for others. The problem, as you put it (and I agree with), is choice. Enter the petty dictates and lunacy of tyrants using and abusing the faithful and the ever-present zealot who is his god’s overachiever.
      There is danger with speaking in absolutes and embracing generalies. I don’t care if someone is a Muslim and practices his or her brand of theism in peace. I DO care if anyone’s religion or ideology asserts I am one more egg for the omelette of progress or any god.
      Thanks for the discourse and your time. It’s alway nice when we can stay civil on this forum…and all too rare.

    And during WWII we weren’t at war with the Germans, just the Nazi’s. During the Korean Conflict (trying to be PC otherwise I’d call it the Korean War) we weren’t at war with the North Koreans and Chinese, just the Communists. And in Viet Nam I guess we weren’t really at war with anyone, it was just a big live fire training exercise. Panetta needs to remember he was a soldier once and get away from the ‘echelons above reality’ mindset and fire the candy asses he is listening to. Bush was right; if they are not with us, they are against us. And by God (mine, not theirs) we will put this right like we did in the past in a way they understand; with brute force.

    I read this article in local paper during lunch. My first thougt was, “Heaven forbid you state the obvious.” The wizards who are sick with PC in both govt. and the military may not accept the U.S. (and the West in general) is at war with Islamic, but many Islamic populations and clergy sure as hell believe they’re at war with the U.S. and the West. Go figure.
    When you can’t admit who your enemy is, there is a sickness present in both your leadership and a vociferous minority that defies reason (and, likely,treatment). This is like having someone break into your home and threaten your family and explaining it away as a misunderstanding with the youth culture.
    So we’re at war with food, drugs, poverty, racism… but sure the martial elements of Isam are off the table. Sorry to ruffle your feathers, zealots! Carry on.
    Limp-wristed semantic idiocy. The officer being sacrificed on the altar of PC gets excoriated (if not worse)… & an open zealot gets to shoot up his fellow soldiers (because he was Islamic PC kryptonite). This might be one more reason to suspect we are definitively screwed.

    Muslim should not be in our miltary either since we have seen that serving is or might be against their religion. Being in the US as friendly citiizens makes me skeptical, based on all we have seen and heard about individual muslims here, legally and illegally, and about their religious teachings. Why do they oppose being watched for terrorist activity if there is none?

    I can also see that with the exception of the political cartoon, which is opinion, it’s all fact.

    The pictures of the jihadis-in-training are pretty self-evident and the Qu’ran verses cited are quite clear.

      In response to previous post; for a follower of Islam to be a good person he/she must be a bad Muslim. Most of the Quran (62%); commands the subjugation or death of ALL non-Muslims. In 2009, 176,000 Christians were killed worldwide because of their faith, nearly all killed by Muslims. Christians killed by Muslims is expected to exceed 200,000 this year. Islamists who choose to disregard most of the Quran can only be viewed by their peers as bad, utterly disobedient, hell-bound Muslims. The Bible transformed from “the eye for an eye” standard of the O.T. to the “turning of the cheek” standard of the N.T. The Quran commands the opposite and orders its followers to disregard older, contradictive, compassionate dictates in lieu of newer, heartless, bloodthirsty replacements.
      Only those that believe the propaganda that Christians are responsible for the sins of the Catholic Church can continue to unjustly blame Christians. Ironically, the Christians were by far the most persecuted… killing an estimated 150 million Christians over a period of 605 years before attempting instead to incorporate Christianity. Without this bloody baggage strapped on the backs of all Christians, the most serious criticisms against Christians, however well-intended, is that they often try a little too hard and that they are rather uncool; a bit out of line with the rest of the world in terms of modern expectations; sexual promiscuity, tattoos, recreational drugs, profanity etc.

    how is this any better than the nazis war on jews? war on people because of a faith is wrong and not everybody of a faith is evil, there are plenty of Christians who have done bad stuff and the Muslims are not going to like our troops invading their countries and killing their people whether on purpose or not, they have no right to be there, they did not declare war or attack the US. i know neo cons act like they care about Israel but at the sametime are the primary reason why Israel‘s enemies even have arms because they think they can try to make the people be like Americans which obviously doesn’t work.

      It is not like the Nazis declaring war on the Jewish people! The Jewish people didn’t fly planes into any Germany buildings killing 1000s of people or state their goal of flying their Jewish flag over the German capital. Or ever said if the German people didn’t convert to their religion they would kill them. Facts are not on your side with that argument.

      Islam CLEARLY has a very martial history with major elements that exist to date that see all nonbelievers as an enemy to be either converted or purged. Review of history debunks your noble savage claim. Islam eradicates ITS OWN KIND who aren’t “up to standards” at an astronomical rate in one year compared to any other religion’s blemishes over the course of decades if not centuries.
      The comparison to all other faiths combined sees Islam “win” as the most violent, repressive and intolerant organized religion to ever impose its will upon humanity.
      I will gladly stand by my claims with statistics if you must have them… but I encourage you to your own homework. Hell, Islam is even the ‘new kid’ on the block. Making up for lost time with fervor it appears.

      You can’t silence the truth – Islam is what it is – Evil. No hate here – it is all on their side. We have every right to respond to their attacks and point out what these people are all about. My advice is look at your religion and re-evaluate your beliefs. Unlike your religion Christians will show you love if you reach out.
