Atheist Comedian Ricky Gervais Poses as Jesus in ‘Blasphemous’ Mag Cover

It’s no secret that Ricky Gervais is an atheist. And it’s no secret that he’s controversial. But the comedian who became popular as the main character in the British version of “The Office” may have gone too far with his latest magazine cover. That’s because Gervais irreverently poses as Jesus Christ.
That may not sound too bad initially, especially considering imitation is the highest form of flattery. But when you see the cover for the British magazine “New Humanist,’ which includes Gervais wearing a crown, strung up on a microphone stand, bare-chested, and the word “atheist” scratched across his chest, your opinion may change:
“Inside you’ll find our interview with Gervais, in which he discusses his new show Life’s Too Short, offence (’You have the right to be offended, and I have the right to offend you. But no one has the right to never be offended’) and losing his childhood faith,” the magazine explains.
The blog Friendly Atheist calls it “blasphemous” (perhaps in support) and explains the origin of the photo:
Remember how comedian Ricky Gervais submitted a picture of himself, dressed as a clown with a gun in his mouth, for the cover of Rolling Stone? They rejected it because it was “too offensive” and Gervais said he didn’t even bother to submit his second choice: himself, shirtless, holding a mic stand as if he were nailed to a crucifix.
Rolling Stone may have said no, but New Humanist magazine said yes! The UK publication will be using that second image for its September/October issue.
While it’s true what Gervais says, that he has a “right” to offend, do you think he’s gone too far? And do you think that if this was done to mock another religion there would be public outcry?
Take our poll:

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 1:48pmI agree. Also, in this republic, if you do not find yourself being offended – WE ARE NOT DOING IT RIGHT! Just as he has the right to offend, I have the right to see it and use it as a reason to not support him by seeing his movies or buying any products he is involved with. We get not right of freedom from offense, in fact the freedom of speech GUARANTEES we will be offended – frequently. Which is as it should be.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 1:57pmExactly! I’d never belie the man the right to speak his mind in whatever form (so long as it doesn’t include actually physically harming another person), but let’s see see some testicular fortitude behind some of this kind of thing, shall we? It’s easy to bash Christians of most stripes and Jews for that matter. Why? Because our faith and it’s underlying principles are the ones that allow us to live and let live. They’re the ones that gave Mr. Gervais the world in which he CAN do something like this knowing that while it may offend, it won’t cost him his head. You want to be really controversial? Do something like that with Mohammed. Sure, the magazine likely wouldn’t run it. Why? Fear. No other reason but fear. See, modern day Christians and Jews are not scary. We don’t cut off heads, carry out holy crusades or convert by the sword. Mr. Gervais, God gives you the right to believe in him or not. He’s cool like that. He also gives you the free will to choose how and who you will offend with your own ideas and speech. Again, he’s pretty cool like that. I dare you to come down off the cross of atheism you’ve made for yourself and instead take on the mocking guise of a prophet, martyr or deity from a faith with an active movement of people who would happily take your head for that precise expression.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 2:09pmI have to agree with Echelon here.
Lambasting the absurdities of Christianity is far too easy and, most crucially, safe. However, in a society that is mostly influeneced by this strand of the Abrahamic faith it is still useful and of importance.
But lets not miss the bigger picture. Christians aren’t as threatening as Muslims, yet (they are ripe for radicalization, though). Its time we see some depictions of Muhammed being sodomized by a wild pig or, better yet, Jesus Christ himself plastered on the cover of New Humanist. Now THAT would take some guts and tick off the two most virulent and dangerous strands of superstition on the planet.
Islam is a very dangerous fairy tale that requires equal derision and mockery as that to which the Left applies to Christianity.
But the real reason the Left doesn’t attack Islam is not because they are in cahoots together or because they both want to destroy the West, America, Israel or Capitalism. No, not at all. The reason Islam gets a free pass from the Left is because the Left is scared of Islam.
They need to change that.
cheers

Those evil muslims are in a different country. We live in America, where the Christian population pray to their God to have a theocracy here in America. The Muslims in America can try to advocate for Sharia Law but only conspiracy nuts are going to believe that’ll ever happen. What is possible is the Christians of this country pushing their belief even further on the minority. That’s the problem. We don‘t have muslims in this country forcing me to believe in Allah but I have plenty of Christians threatening me with eternity in hell just because I don’t believe in their fairy tale.
That’s why Atheists fight with Christians in America, that’s the fight that exists. I have yet to hear a muslim, in person, try to convert me but I have many Christians telling me that their morality should be law and actually have the power to make that happen.

Yeah Ricky take a picture of yourself dressed up as Mohamed fake humping a goat and put that on the cover!”
…but Mohammed never did–at least inasmuch as we know. You see, like Jesus, all we have to go off of for historical knowledge about Mohammed and his life is the secondhand accounts of many others stitched together over a period of about 25-50 years (or two centuries for Christianity). And nowhere in the Qur’ran does it ever recount the time when Mohammed sodomized a goat. Now, like Jesus, we unfortunately have to just take his word for it–there’s no way to know if he omitted the part where he sodomized the goat to make himself look better…or made up the part about him being crucified and the son of God. The point is, that Ricky is doing something that, according to the people who know him best, Jesus or his representatives claim he did (namely be crucified). Whereas Mohammed, and any accounts of him, never mention goat sodomy, but like I said, as the case with Jesus, we only have his word for it.

oooh, ooooh, I can answer that one! He should mock ALL religions because he now claims to be an atheist. If so, and according to the left dribble, the Muslims are even more serious about their religion than Christians. He’s a chicken because he does it to the ones he knows are supposed to turn the other cheek and forgive him. I don’t see many Bibles that say kill everyone who mocks Jesus or God of Abraham. I have listed on here before where it says kill the infidels. Look it up on the internet. It never lies, unless you google Obamacare.

Do you not see the ridiculousness of your position?? You and many others could care less about why he picked Jesus. You all just want tit for tat schoolyard revenge! let me put this in a way that you people may understand!
If I were an avid Pepsi drinker for years. I really don’t think that there is any such thing as an atheist. I think that there are men and women who are just lovers of themselves and don’t want to give up their lives to Jesus Christ..because they enjoy their sinful nature. Many secretly think..I just want 5 minutes alone with God before I die. Then of course there are ones who will never accept Jesus/Yeshua as God’s Son and that He was crucified for our sins and rose on the third day. But then God did say that there were those created to be destroyed.. because He knows that it is futile. But He knew that from the foundations of the world. We need to pray for the lost.and our enemies, because we are commanded to do so..you never know who will be found.

” It’s sad that nothing is sacred anymore.”
On the contrary. The fact that nothing is sacred is what makes Europe and North America some of the best places in the world to live. When the sacred is deemed above criticism or contradiction, that’s when you get Crusades and witch trials.
So many theists moan and drip and wail about how mean the atheists are to question the myths and delusions of religions. That’s because atheists are fully aware of what theists did to critics and deniers when religion held the reins of power. The freedoms that everyone enjoys under liberal democracies were hard won by neutering religious authority.

That is my opinion but I wish we could actually question their hearts. When hard times come they almost always ask the question. That would be an agnostic.
Penn Gillette sounds more like an ignostic than an atheist, much like questions on science they are theories that can go both way. If Penn believes there is a chance, then he is an ignostic not an atheist. Let him explain his own beliefs: http://www.americanparchment.com/video/2011/aug/jillette_morgan_atheism.html

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 1:33pmYou actually just have some terms mixed up. Atheism is simply the rejection of the claim there is a theistic god. Agnosticism deals with knowledge. One can be an agnostic atheist or a gnostic atheist or an agnostic theist or a gnostic theist.
Report Post »RavenGlenn
Posted on August 22, 2011 at 2:31pmAgnostics are open to the idea that there could be a god. Penn Gillette is absolutely not open to that. He is very certain there is no god. However, people like to argue with him on things like: What if he is wrong, and somebody is religious, then what?!
And like any man educated on religion, he simply says: ‘Well, if that’s the case, I’ve lived my life well. Do you think God would be concerned on whether or not I went to church and prayed to him everyday or do you think he cares that I’ve lived good and righteous without needing an excuse?’
That’s not being Agnostic, that is countering the moronic questions that people like to pose to Atheists as though they were evil creatures that slither across the surface of the planet.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 1:15pmYes..of course..the poor atheist, martyred for his beliefs. Crucified for what? Suffering for what? It’s just empty posing. Gervais is a poseur. Gimmicks. Go ahead Ricky…dress up as Mohammed. Try to be funny about Mohammed like your comedic counterparts at South Park. They regularly lambast christians but when it came to portray Mohammed, the Islamists threatened them with death and they pulled away from their “firm beliefs”. Militant atheists are cowards, poseurs and creeps.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 1:04pmSo Why Exactly Is It That Christianity Is Always The Target Of Atheist Smears? Is it all of the suicide Christian bombers killing innocent people? or are they offended by the lack of Muslim, Buddhist, Taoist, and Atheist soup kitchens, homeless shelters, food pantries, blood drives, drug/alcohol addiction services. Atheists are a freaking joke they lend nothing positive to the world.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 1:14pmBecause most athiests are disgruntled Christians. Because of that, they keep the need to discredit other faiths in an attempt to “save lost souls”.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 1:42pm@nSDQ- To answer your question it’s because they can. They can without any serious ramifications. The liberal lapdog media finds this acceptable, indeed commendable behavior. There will be no Christian backlash because their very beliefs system teaches to love your enemies and pray for them. It is human nature to be offended, and while the Christian may even feel outrage, they will do nothing about it except perhaps boycott the offender. And so it will continue , Christians will suffer the slings and arrows of those who love to offend simply because they are easy targets.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 9:55pmChristians are not disgruntled. Who told you that? We are happy because we will get to stand in the holy presence if God. Not because we are worthy, but by the shed blood of Jesus Christ. This man is making a mockery of what I hold as sacred. But, I will pray for him. He is a sad human being and he can’t be happy doing this kind of thing.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 11:32amMIMI- Please re-read my post. I did not say that Christians are disgruntled :) Many athiests whom I have come across are in fact, disgruntled Christians. This particular one is probably is so bad at his craft, that he has to resort to this tasteless exhibition.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 1:25pmWhat makes me a newcomer? Because I don’t know who some useless “comedian” is? Because I have been woefully unexposed to some moron who takes cheap shots at Christianity? Please enlighten me, oh great one who is schooled in the unimportant, because apparently I am at a loss for not knowing who this guy is. I understand you’re probably trying to be humorous, however your attempt has fallen flat.
And if this guy is going out of his way to be offensive, why doesn’t he take a shot at islam instead of a known soft target? Now THAT might be interesting, if only to see how long it would take for the fatwa to be issued.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 8:05amLOL! Exactly – Gervase has had some two-bit roles in American movies, but he’s keeps trying to break out big into American media. Sure sign of desperation when a public figure resorts to outrage and shock. What’s worse is when we respond. Most effective response to this is a resounding “Ya-a-a-a-a-wn!”

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 2:12pmIt’s news. Why shouldn’t the Blaze report it? I’m glad the Blaze is not like the other “News” outlets who clearly have an agenda. I looked around today and I was hard pressed to find any coverage on the “Restoring Courage” event from any of the mainstream news outlets. We don’t need to be like that. Ignoring what is going on around is what has gotten this country into the mess it’s in right now.

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 4:39pm” I’m glad the Blaze is not like the other “News” outlets who clearly have an agenda. ”
And you don’t think the Blaze has an agenda? Perhaps that’s because you fully agree with it. But you should still learn to see the agenda even when you agree with them. The poll is totally slanted against the idea of free speech. It’s not even considered. And that the article would end on the question, has he gone “too far?” says a lot. Too far for what, or for whom? It presumes that there are standards of decency that ought to be enforced somehow. The whole magazine article in question was about whether we have a right NOT to be offended. It seems that went right over the Blaze’s head.
