Atheist Group Demands Removal of Select Military Bibles & Calls Them a ‘Threat to National Security’

LifeWay Military Bibles Can No Longer Feature Official Seals | Military Religious Freedom FoundationThe drama over Bibles in the military seems to be heating up, with church-state separatist groups setting their sights on ensuring that the holy book’s influence — and presence — declines in the ranks.

The Blaze previously reported about the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF) success in convincing the Air Force to remove Bibles from a required room-preparation checklist. Now, another secularist group — the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) — is taking efforts further, calling select military Bibles a “threat to national security.”

In what will surely raise eyebrows among those who have traditionally appreciated the military’s often Christian undertones, officials have revoked approval for a series of military-themed Bibles. This action was purportedly taken, as Fox News Todd Starnes notes, over trademark issues (or rather: an overt decision to no longer allow the images to be utilized).

(Related: Air Force Bows to Atheist Complaints: Will Remove Bible Requirement for On-Base Lodging)

In addition to protesting the Bibles that have now been banned, the MRFF, seeing a ripe opportunity to further its anti-Bible activism, is now demanding that the remaining books be removed from base exchanges (stores). The atheists claim that the books, which have official branch insignias on them, pose a risk to U.S. national security.

LifeWay Military Bibles Can No Longer Feature Official Seals | Military Religious Freedom FoundationStarnes has more about the Bibles and the controversy surrounding them:

The military series of Bibles were published by B&H Publishing, a division of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest non-Catholic denomination. They published four versions of the Holman Christian Standard Bible – representing the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.

The Bibles are tailored to each specific military branch. For example, the cover of the Marine version says “The Marines’ Bible” – along with the USMC emblem. The Bibles contain special prayers and devotional material for military personnel.

But the Military Religious Freedom Foundation complained that the Bibles were an official endorsement by the U.S. Military. They alleged the Bibles not only violated the U.S. Constitution, but also violated Defense Department regulations.

Now, the military will no longer allow for the use of official branch logos on these Bibles. While LifeWay initially secured the permission to use the insignias back in 2003, they were recently informed that they may no longer use them.

“We received notice last year from the various branches withdrawing authorization,” a spokesman for LifeWay told Starnes. “After selling existing inventory of those bibles, B&H replaced the official seals with generic insignias which continue to sell well and provide spiritual guidance and comfort to those who serve.”

LifeWay Military Bibles Can No Longer Feature Official Seals | Military Religious Freedom FoundationThe military is claiming that the revocation had nothing at all to do with religion, but the MRFF seems to indicate its belief that anti-theist advocacy is what led to the trademark change-of-heart.

“If their logos are being placed on a particular version of Christianity – particularly when we are engaged in a war with fundamentalist Muslims that are trying to view this as a cosmic war between Jesus and Allah – it’s a security threat,” MRFF spokesperson Mikey Weinstein said of the Bibles. “It’s neither a problem, it’s not an issue or a challenge. It’s a national security threat.”

As stated, in addition to protesting the emblems — a problem that has now been solved — the atheist group is also demanding that any remaining Bibles that have the insignias be immediately removed from being sold on military bases. Starnes explains:

According to a letter from the chief of the Air Force Trademark Licensing Program, the Air Force withdrew LifeWay’s authority to use their trademarks in 2011. The Air Force did allow LifeWay to deplete its existing stock through ongoing sales.

Weinstein said his organization had absolutely no problem with regular Bibles being sold at base stores, but he said the military-themed Bibles were in violation of the law.

“The Bible by itself is fine to be sold,” Weinstein told Fox News Radio. But he said they also want the remaining stock removed from base stores.

“Replace those Bibles with those that don’t have the emblems,” he said.

Currently, there are fewer than 1,000 of these Bibles on military exchange shelves across the country.

So, if I understand their thinking correctly…9/11 happened because we allowed these Military Bibles to exist, be printed and sold on military bases. My personal feeling is that MAAF & MRFF are national security risks. As is any person or organization that tries to separate us from out Judeo-Christian foundation.

If athiests don’t like it here, perhaps they should think about that. My final comment to activist athiests is, stop stomping on everyone else’s liberty.

Actually you are wrong, though it was not mentioned in the article but the 96% of the members in the Military Religious Freedom Foundation are Christian. Most Christians do believe in the separation of Church and State.Nor are Bibles being denied for sale.It is only the matter of using military emblems that give the impression that the military branches are endorsing a given religion. The same complaint would be done if any other religious books were to appear with our US Military Emblems embossed on them. Our country has members in all the worlds religions, even tribal ones, in the military, and includes non religious people as well. As long as they are all risking their lives for our country, the military show not be seen as pushing one religion over another. Freedom of religion means freedom for all of them, not the chosen few, and it must include the right not to believe.
As a Marine Vietnam Veteran, I can say we never saw this overt push to push Christianity in the Marine Corp back then, no push to any religion in the battle field. It has never been the job of the military to convert people to Christianity or any other religion. Even so it has been a hard long fight to get true religious freedom in the military like we have now. I remember my oath: To protect the Constitution of the United States from all enemies, foreign and domestic. I am sorry for veterans who have forgotten their oath. I have not.

Oh God yes, we must remove the Christian and Jewish bibles from military bases so that people like Nidal Malik Hasan who has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder cannot use the Christian or Jewish bible against us. They have the right to use the MUSLIM bible but we have no rights at all to clearly and openly express our beliefs lest we be murdered by those of the muslim faith because liberals believe we are racist. I will say this once. I wear a crucifix openly. If ANYONE EVER comes and tells me I am offending them because of my open religious beliefs, you WILL find me in the NATIONAL news. Dont EVER come to Daytona Beach Florida or surrounding areas. I will NOT remove my bible from my flea market table, I will NOT remove my white gold crucifix from your site because it offends you. My Father is a southern baptist preacher. When I left for boot camp over a decade ago he gave me a Marine’s Bible. I have carried it in every war zone. It kept me sane and grounded in the worst of times. He signed it with a message that says “Son, the lessons needed to live a successful life are in this book. It has guided my life for as long as I can remember. Hide it’s words in your heart and let it lead you in all your decisions.” It is one of my most prized possessions. If it is a threat to national security, then I am a greater threat then the department of homeland security already believes I am.

      Yup, totally a Christian nation.

I just loving reading the Constitution and seeing Jesus’s name plastered all throughout it.

I also love how our Constitution lines up exactly with Christianity, especially the 10 commandments.

      1st commandment
“Thou shalt have no other God’s before me.”
1st amendment to the Constitution contains, “Freedom of religion.”
Wow, they are almost exactly the same!

      2nd commandment,
“Thou shalt make no graven images.”
      1st amendment
      “Freedom of expression.”
There you go again, they fit exactly in line!

Need I go on or do you need more examples of how this isn’t a Christian nation?

It is a secular nation of a group of founders, most Christian, some deists, some atheists who eventually agreed that everyone is free to believe what they want, but that no religion should get any special notoriety but Government. Sure there have been numerous Presidents who break the Constitution, just like they did when they wrote about “freedom, liberty, pursuit of happiness” while owning slaves.

Just because the founders wrote the Constitution, didn‘t mean they weren’t doing things unconstitutional.

What they want seems to be rights only for Christians and no one else. Sorry but the Constitution does not recognize special rights for Christians. That is the reason it states that no religious test can be used for right of office. They knew when they set that up that it would open the way to Atheists, Muslims, even Pagans to take office. Our forefathers had quite a discussion on what they meant before putting that into our Constitution. Gee all the nifty stuff they forgot to teach in school history.

Gee making up your own straw man.You cannot possible speak for anyone but yourself, and you certainly do not have the ability to read minds of people that you do not like. Your false claims only show your weakness of character. It is also unChristian, or don’t you believe in the Ten Commandments.

I was a lay reader in Marine Corps boot camp and I can tell you that prayer and worship helps these young guys. Especially in time of war these soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines need God to help them through. If you try to take away God, not only would that be futile, that would be a threat to national security.

The USA is so screwed. God will not tolerate this any longer. How much longer do we have before God judges this nation serverly? It is actions like this (along with the murder of millions of babies and treating Israel like garbage) that the USA is not mentioned in the Bible concerning the last days. We destroy ourselves by kicking out God. It saddens me that there are people out there that have this much hate in them. How I do have compassion for their lost souls. People with no understanding what-so-ever. Fools….all of them.

God’s word has been under attack for decades. In our lifetime you will see CHRISTIAN bibles outlawed as “hate speech”. I wouldn’t be surprised to find Christianity outlawed as well. According to Scripture, all Christians will be routed out and killed.

      A bit paranoid, aren’t you?

The fact is anyone can carry any religious tract they want. What is NOT allowed is the military – a government agency – putting their stamp of approval on any one religious tract over another. Bibles will continue to be available to those who want them. Geesh. Lighten up!

When you sign up to be in the military a lot of your rights are suspended in many areas. Among the few rights that remain is the freedom of religion.and yet these aetheist psychopaths would have even that removed because it offends their sensibilities. They risk destroying good order and discipline and creating mutiny in the ranks. That is a bigger threat to national security than the aetheist’s perceived slights from their myopic lens that they view the world through.

What books do you atheists want to replace the Bible with?

Here’s their selection- Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx’s Das Capital, Rules for Radicals by Saul Alinsky, Mein Kampf, anything by Richard Dawkins, Bertrand Russell, etc. etc.

“Collector’s Item? That’s sad when a vocal minority prohibits free speech. ”

According to the article, it‘s because the printer’s contract to use military symbols on their Bibles ran out last year and was not renewed. I suppose that’s a restriction of free speech, but the alternative would be copyright infringement. As the article itself says: “After selling existing inventory of those bibles, B&H replaced the official seals with generic insignias which continue to sell well and provide spiritual guidance and comfort to those who serve.”

Yes, The bible scares the hell out of them and it’s the most dangerous book ever written. The fear of God is the beginging of wisdom. Like you say,it takes only 1 person to stop a prayer in school or the graduation that speaks of Jesus or of God the Father. They can try to destroy the bible as many have tried thru the centuies, only to be found in error of the truth written all along the pages. Just to say Jesus as our Lord and Savior can get you thrown in jail,or in Muslum lands, torture and death. I am affended at the way people use the name of Jesus to slander as they make a point. Why can’t they say ” Sam,dam it!? As for bibles given to our service members, great! But the Chaplains can’t pray in the name of Jesus by orders from the top,via Oba n his minions because they are so blinded by satan that they rage again’st anyone who professies that Jesus is our Lord n Savior. Soon it will be a time here in the USA that any mention of Him will get you jailed and a death sentence will follow. Our men n women who serve our country deserve to have the very best we can do for them and if they are denied the Bible by a few idiots, just confront them for who they are and demand our rights to serve Jesus or not. In the 70s’ the Army had to give rights to the church of satan cuz a few demented ones demand freedom to worship who or what they want. Sad in heart, but it is our freedom and theirs’. Choose wisely. on the edge of time…..

However, I want to respond to “they are scared of the bible. . . . “. I can assure you that I have no more fear of the bible than I do of a fiction horror story. The bible [for me] has about the same level of concern [which is none].

chameleonx – The most important thing that atheist forget when they reply with “science” is that there is a source behind the origin of science. You are reading the wrong books. Read some of David Barton’s books on the founders. Also, separation of church and state is not in the Constitution. The Constitution clearly state that you cannot prohit the free exercise of religion.

“Books that challenge religion and promote reason.”

You should try the Bible. That’s exactly what it does. Most of the Bible is a rebuke to people for corrupting God’s commandments and creating their own religion.

Christianity is not a religion. It is a relationship. It is a status of either redeemed to God or separated from God. Christ requires no pilgrimmage, no religious token of merit. He just requires your faith and obedience and to be made first in your life. We all have to obey some authority. Might as well be the One who offers an eteranal life and more importantly, an escape from eternal wrath.

BZ Squidvet! You hit the nail on the head – being in Christ is being in relationship w/God and humanity. It’s not a set of rules that you follow for salvation. Rules are followed out of love and respect for God who gave those rules for our benefit and safety! Thus we become like St Paul – all things are lawful but not all things are helpful.
