Atheist Group to Sponsor Anti-Christmas Billboards Featuring Jesus, Santa & Satan

American Atheists announced Monday on their “No God Blog” a new billboard campaign in their continued effort in “laboring for the civil liberties of atheists,” but in reality just upsetting those who disagree with their theological stance. A press release for the American Atheists’ new holiday season billboard campaign reads:
“American Atheists announced today that their new billboard is going up in several locations nationwide, including the New Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel: the same location as last year’s famous ‘You KNOW it’s a MYTH’ billboard. The new billboard will also be going up in Ohio and Florida.
This year’s holiday season billboard features pictures of Neptune, Jesus, Santa Claus, and the Devil and says, ‘37 Million Americans know MYTHS when they see them. What do you see?’”
The organization’s Communications Director Blair Scott went on to say:
“Every year groups like The Catholic League and American Family Association told Americans about a war on Christmas that simply did not exist. Last year we thought we would give them what they seemed to want and fired the first shot in the war on Christmas. To both groups we say, ‘Happy Holidays!’”
Anticipating the inevitability that their billboard will offend others, Dave Silverman, the president of American Atheists, said, “When you question someone’s long-held beliefs and doctrine they are going to be immediately offended and be on the defensive: it’s a known psychological phenomenon.”
Silverman is the same wordsmith who said the following when his group filed a lawsuit to stop a steel cross from being displayed at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at Ground Zero:
“The WTC cross has become a Christian icon. It has been blessed by so-called holy men and presented as a reminder that their god, who couldn’t be bothered to stop the Muslim terrorists or prevent 3,000 people from being killed in his name, cared only enough to bestow upon us some rubble that resembles a cross.”
The group writes in a letter on their web site that the billboard campaign is not an effort to convert theists into atheists, but an “attempt to get the church pew atheists to consider what they are doing.” It goes on to ask, “Why are they going through this ridiculous motion of pretending to believe in a myth, just to please other people?”

I have all things as proof that there is a God. The earth, the moon, stars sun, their orbits, the plants, animals the circle of life. The existence of mankind, that man is intelligent enough to make cars, airplanes, computers, etc. All things prove to me that God exists.
Athiests are possessed by a lying spirit. they have allowed satan to decieve them into believing there is no God.

Man driving in car sees the sign and becomes enraged. He pulls over and storms his way to the bottom of the sign, looks up and realizes how much effort it would take to tear it down. He walks back to his car cursing under his breath.

That is not “proof” that is a “belief” with no effort.

That’s why a spiritual person can come from a family of atheists, and vice versa. Someone doesn’t have to be taught there is a higher authority, and those who are not taught exactly who it is will still know there is something above even government.

My comment was referencing his insistence that those who worship one or more deities (imaginary friends, according to Libertarianforlife) keep those deities to themselves. However, the contradiction of posting such a comment on an article about a billboard that is doing the opposite of “KEEP[ing]“ beliefs ”TO YOURSELF” is what I was referring to. I concur that both Libertarianforlife and I have equal claim to posting comments on here, purchasing advertising space to proselytize whatever beliefs we have to the general public, etc. I am secure enough in my beliefs not to be offended by such a billboard.

This is why they think that obliterating the Lord’s name will give them peace. Their denial is so strong that they refuse to see this is the very reason they feel so empty in the first place.

The sad thing is many atheists, like you, who point out the belief in God is just that, a belief, refuse to admit or don’t even realize that atheism is a belief system too.
Where did the universe and all that is in it come from? We cannot answer that question through the Scientific Method of observation and repetition. There are only 3 possible answers to this question. 1. It has always existed, 2. it created itself or 3. it was created. We know it has not always existed because we’d be in a “Cold Death” now if the universe were infinitely old. We also know the universe did not create itself because scientifically we know that nothing comes from nothing. Your computer did not create itself, neither did anything else. So that leaves us with the only logical conclusion being the universe was created. I believe the God of the Bible created the universe. You have a blind faith in something else. Not sure what that is or could be, but I want you to realize, you sir, are the one with a blind faith.

Fundamentalist atheism certainly is a belief system. Anyone who says “There is no God” is stating not fact, but a belief. In the same way, anyone who says “God definitely exists” unequivocally is stating a belief, not a fact.
Only one man in the entire history of the world knew God existed: Jesus Christ. And all we can do is trust that he was everything he said he was. Everyone else is just believing. Sure, there’re a lot of good reasons to believe, but in the end, none of us can know for sure while still alive. That‘s why it’s a belief.
I have no problem with atheists putting up billboards; makes me laugh. I also have no problem telling them that if they say “God doesn’t exist,” they’re just professing a belief. Most atheists I know tend to be more of the agnostic atheist brand, saying “There’s no scientific evidence that God exists, but I can’t prove it one way or another.” My response to them is simple: I believe He does exist, and I’d rather live my life thinking someone cares for me and will let me live forever than feeling alone during life and expecting nothing after death.

Excellent comment! As an Agnostic, I fully support what you stated and appreciate that you have your reasons to believe. I have my reasons not to. I say live and let live. The reason Atheists have to be on the offensive is because Christians want to impose their belief in Government. Government must be neutral, is it the fault of the Atheist that neutrality appears to favor them? Everyone pays taxes here in America, from the Christian to the Muslim to the Atheist. Tax dollars should not be used to promote any of the above. Period. Neutrality.
I am an Agnostic because I don’t know. God could exist somewhere, I just don’t know.

Satan just decided to challenge God and got his a$$ kicked, royally as a matter of fact. Now he‘s messing around with God’s creation – man. Not a very smart move! For as man matures and realizes who he is in Christ, and woman for that matter, satan gets his a$$ kicked again and again on a regular basis, for greater is He, who is in me, than he who is in the world. satan, little “s”, loses every time, and praise God, big “G”, for that.

On the contrary, it’s standard to see Christian-themed billboards. On my way to work every morning there’s a billboard saying “After you die… you WILL meet God!“ as well as several others saying things such as ”God is real, repent before it’s too late!” All doing the same thing: stating a belief as a fact without offering proof. Hence why I laugh at atheist billboards, and do the same to these ones.
I‘d imagine it’s not as common outside the South, but probably 1/5 billboards here is about Christianity stating that without a doubt, God exists. Another 1/5 are anti-abortion, and the rest are ads.

“Satan just decided to challenge God and got his a$$ kicked, royally as a matter of fact.”
Sorry in advance for going off-topic, but… that’s not written in the Bible. Satan is spoken of in the New Testament as the devil, but his origins are never discussed. The same word is used as Satan in the book of Job in the Old Testament, but Satan there was a title to mean accuser (as he accused Job of only being faithful due to good fortune). In the Gospels, only Mark refers to the devil as Satan, this time using the meaning of “adversary.”
The entire idea of a war in heaven before the fall of man comes from the 1600s with John Milton. The only reference to an actual war in heaven is in Revelation, at the end of times, when the angels fight against the Beast. The idea of a pre-fall war that resulted in the devil being kicked out is the result of bad translations (Lucifer’s meaning, for example, changing from a mortal king to the devil), theological changes after the fact (saying that the devil is the serpent in the Garden, a concept that didn’t occur until hundreds of years after the time of Christ), and Milton’s poem.
There’s your lesson for the day!

Poeple say it came from the “Big Bang”. Idk i wasn’t there, maybe it did happen. But where did the particales come from, or the energy (whatever it was). Really want to know, because I like knowing and finding out about stuff i dont understand…Also when I debate I like to know facts and not “made up stuff”, no pun intended.
Maybe (little off topic) here; there is a GOD and he made everything for life to live and thats it. and Evolution took over from there… Even thou I dont see how we came from, for a lack of a better term, monkeys.
What i believe GOD made everything we see, hear, and touch, He made us, primitive man and beast, and we evolve from there.

To have a neutral government equates to godless government… no wonder there is so much corruption, lies, waste, greed, and plain stupidity in gov. Removing God is like taking the glue out of a chair, it will not remain standing to long. We are seeing the evidence of this in America. The more of God we remove the more wobbly it gets. I work with teenagers…. the school system is a stinking mess, this has been tracked to the removal of God from the system. The health class in the school system where I live now is beginning to teach “spiritual” health. They have put in a substitute for God. I hate to tell you there is no such thing as being neutral according to scripture where it states that one is either for or against God. I do not want to preach or talk at you, but if God does exists He is everywhere all the time. The universe cannot be bigger then Him. You also say that “I just don’t know”. Locked said that one cannot prove or disprove God. I almost agree. I fully understand his statement. I believe God can all but be proven if…

If you could plug in a computer terminal to my brain and see what I am trying to say I believe it would all but prove God. All but, being he is not before your eyes. God has proven himself to me once I trusted in Him. I did not trust after he proved Himself…. this requires NO faith…. faith comes first.
I will give you one experience of many… I was frustrated with the youth program that I am director of. Not because of the youth but a number of other ongoing issues. There is a mountain that borders the city where I live with a road that runs along it with some pull overs for lookouts. It was in winter and I went there to pray. There was a light coating at some places in the mountain because of the light snow shower. I was walking in circles across the road praying, it was around 3am, not one car came by. I was doing this for a least a hour, wondering to God why nobody seemed to care about the youth of the city. I got tired and stopped and noticed some writing in the snow about 20 feet in front of my car. I did not notice it before this. The writing went about 20 feet so it was not small. I looked at what it said. I could not believe it, so I read it again, and I read it again…….

Why…. because swine will stamp it into the mud. You will be what you will be I have accused you of nothing, in fact I have stayed up late to get this to you.I hope it was not wasted. You cannot tell me there is no God I have read the bible added to that and with my personal experiences it all adds up to there is a God and He is Jesus who died and rose again. Be it folly, to my grave I will take this if the Lord does not abandon me. I have probably done a very poor job of trying to show you what I wanted you to see. Thing is… in the end, you got to get for yourself the truth or not. I hope some day you do know……. that Jesus is who He said he is…. Lord of ALL!

1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession.
Report Post »2 And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?
4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”
5 Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things.
6 And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.
7 Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8 And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?” She said, “Yes, for so much.”
9 Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”
10 Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband.
11 So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

13 and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band.
14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire;
15 His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters;
16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.
17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.

Uh, that’s called Mormonism. Anyone can become like a god and have their own planet.]
As always you are so simplistic and limited in your thought process. In LDS theoloogy in order to become like God, you have to accept Christ and accept to do things according to God’s ways, not according to man’s ways. Accepting Christ and God’s ways of doing things is consistent with Christian teaching.
The fact that God tells us, in his scriptures, that we should become perfect, even as our Father in heaven is perfect, and that we can be glorified with Christ and become joint heirs with Christ (all found in the New Testament) may be an inconvenient truth to you but it is a truth nevertheless.
And obviously atheists, unlike Mormons, place their faith in themselves. Mormons place their faith in God.

The problem with your simplistic analysis is that the number of molestations in the Catholic church (or whatever church) are less, per capita, than the average number of molestations on earth in general. Technically, the highest per capita rates of molestations happend to be from blacks and latinos that also happen to be mostly democrats. I like saying that they are mostly democrats because it really irritates the liberals. Of course it is not because they are democrats. Most likely it is because they are poor and uneducated. Of course, the democrats enjoy taking advantage of the poor and uneducated.
In any case, molestations have been happening forever and are not any more prevelant in church as say in your own liberal community.

Neutrality is exactly what agnosticism is. “I don’t know“ or ”There’s not enough valid information either way” can basically sum it up. While you may equate worsening schools to godlessness, I equate it ineffective parenting. It is not the government’s job to teach kids about God; it is the job of the parents. I agree that parents are in large part responsible for the conduct of their kids in the schools. You ask any teacher that has been teaching for 20 years and they will all tell you of the worsening condition and the time spent on maintaining some sort of order and not “teaching”. And yes. in my opinion this is due to our increasing distance from scripture. We have removed God from our schools and when you do that every aspect of him goes. God used to be taught in our schools. Why is it that we spend more and more and it gets worse and worse? As I have stated I work with teenagers outside of the school system, High Schools kid can not read 5-6 letter words and half the ones they can read… they don’t know what it means. You got kids going to school with their pants down… give me a break.. there is a reason for this stuff. I could tell one story after another, it bring me to tears. I love them, and their being sold short. I would make a bet and put up everything I own. You bring God fearing men/women into a district for 2 years and teach scripture (Proverbs would be a good starting point) and I guarantee you would see a change in attitude and grades.
Why would you not want to learn about God in school? Are you a believer (born again)? Not asking to pry.. just kinda wonder.

When I was younger and naive, I was taught that Christmas had become too commercialized, as though that was bad for our nation. Then, as I got older, I understood that holidays that encourage money flow, through various purchases, do nothing but enhance our overall economy and increase our general quality of life.
The fact that people can still purchase gifts and still retain the true meaning of Christmas in their hearts, at the same time, and that many people are able to do this, means that Christmas works well for us.

Report Post »I’m not sure where you all get the idea that atheists are out to attack christianity or are afraid of it. I do not know any atheists who are frightened by any religion (Including Islam). It is simply our belief and we need to profess it a little more vigorously because we are a minority who live in a society that pushes christianity on the population with religious laws and morals you believe we should live up to. I have no animosity toward religion, I just want to be free to have my own beliefs without being demonized or ostracized, something I have lived with most of my life. Feel free to profess your faith as we will profess our beliefs. The problem most atheists have with religion is that we don’t want YOUR beliefs to dictate OUR lives, and in this country that is exactly what happens every day.

Thanks for the reply. You are the first. Here’s why I ask.
You do not believe in God, but you do believe in science, and want to protect the environment.
Why?
If there is no GOD, and the only reason we are here is because of some freak occurrence, then it really does not matter how long we remain here. There is no reason at all to further the cause of man. There is no reason for anything.
Science, which you believe in, tells us that the world, or at least mankind as we know it, will end some day. Even if that day is when the sun burns itself out, we will end.
And what difference will it have made if we lasted 100, 1000, 1,000,000 or even a billion years if there is nothing to shoot for, nothing to gain, no legacy to leave behind because there is no one or anything that will ever know we were here.
IF there is no GOD, we are meaningless, and there is absolutely no reason to prolong the inevitable, other than for selfish, self serving purposes.
So to heck with preserving the planet, the sun is going to burn out anyway.
Why not just party like it’s 19999999999
And could you please list a few of the ways that OUR beliefs dictate YOUR lives, every day?
Report Post »I just don’t see it. As long as you are not murdering us, or stealing our stuff, and living a decent productive life, we would not even know, or care if you exist.

We came from nothing and we will return to nothing. That is no reason to disregard the rights and responsibilities we have here. It may be heard to believe for theists, but morality exists independent of any religion or god. I don’t kill people or steal for the same reason. I have respect for the rights of others, not because I will go to hell if I don’t. My morality comes from inside and is independent of any existence of a god, not from a fear of retribution. That really isn’t that honorable at all really. The problem theists have is that can’t imagine morality without a god. Whichever god they believe in dictates their morality. Sadly, some of those “gods” have a very different idea of morality than what other religions believe and that sometimes involves a great deal of brutality. They believe just as firmly as you do and since over 90% of people end up in the religion they were born into, if you were born in the Middle East you would be just adamant about islam as you are about christianity. I was born into a religious house but did a great deal of study into religion and philosophy and came to the conclusion that a belief in god is not necessary or even desirable for me. Why do you care about the planet & the “rights” of people yet to come if we are nothing but insignificant, accidental happenings. You should have no responsibilities to something that has no reason for existing.
Think a little deeper, or free-er, and tell me why you think future generations have a right to be born, a right to exist, a right to breath our air, a right to burn our oil. If, as you say we came from nothing and return to nothing, then there is no reason for us to not use it all up right now and enjoy it.
Like I said, If you are right, then time means nothing, and it matters not if we make our exit now, or a billion years from now.

The words “You (comma) like most libs” is not necessarily inclusive.
It implies that you are acting “like” them. It does not automatically imply that you are one of them.
I could have said, “You, along with the rest of the libs”
Now that would indeed imply your libnesship. (I stole that from Mike Tyson. He once used the word….“Goodnesship”)

–”Why go to all that trouble?”
Maybe because there is nowhere else to go after we’re dead. Just because you because you believe in a supreme cupcake doesn’t mean life is meaningless for the rest of us. You ask why atheist/agnostics go through the trouble yet you cannot explain your reasons beyond god. Your premise is that if god is taken away then all reason for living and morals cease to be. That is a ridiculous assertion.
–”because I believe that’s what we are supposed to do.”
I do not believe that is what we are supposed to do, but rather what we desire to do.
You believe in a mortal life then an immortal afterlife. This type of thinking is exactly what compels muslims into homicide bombings. If the afterlife is so much better, why go through all the trouble in this life? This is why I called your argument above bilge because it is more easily applied to theist. I believe “immortality” currently only exist through reproduction, teaching what you learn, and/or making some impact on the world. Atheism or agnosticism isn’t about giving up on life but the pursuit of it without shackling ourselves to religious dogma.

In order for that to work for people, the unicorn would have to have a reason to believe in it. Did the unicorn express and demonstrate love for it’s fellow man? Did it come with a list of beliefs, laws, rules of behavior, the golden rule, etc? If not, then your myth will not last nor will it gain followers.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 7:52pmNo true Christian I know would tell a kid, or anyone, that!
No, you will burn in hell for eternity for not accepting the free gift Christ gives you. Religion has nothing to do with it.
Merry Christmas and God bless you.

What does the bible say happens to unbelievers? To kids who are rude / disrespectful of their parents?
I mean the very book your religion is founded upon contains many examples of god killing or ordering killed kids for no apparent reason. Once he did it to win a bet with satan.

Posted on November 16, 2011 at 10:10amWhen you pray for the atheists, do you do the thing where you twist your fingers around each other and roll your eyes toward a corner of the room? Or do you talk into a blow-dryer? I’ve also seen religious people on TV holding one hand up and waving it back and forth.
Prayer is so mysterious and powerful.

Posted on November 15, 2011 at 7:47pmAnd do you know what makes them even more pathetic? That little atomic symbol that they are using is directly taken from the Luciferian cult of Kabballah.
For a group that professes themselves to be wise and educated, they are utterly ignorant, if not outright stupid.

No but it did take science to give us clean water, modern medicine and modern technology. You would have thought that god would have cared enough about human kids to speak in the bible about how to treat water.

Really? If God exists and it was he that created life on earth, then one could correctly say that because God created intelligent beings that it was God that created science. Generally speaking, one would be wiser to just say that intelligent beings created medicine and modern technology.

IF they don’t want to acknowledge the Greatness of the GOD who created the Universe..that’s their lost. BUT why should I or my grandchildren have to see a BILL BOARD with SATAN and SANTA and our JESUS CHRIST? IF they really didn’t believe in GOD they would NOT care what we thought.

That depends, can I sue you and your religion for making terrorist threats against those who do not believe as you do? Or is it acceptable for you to terrorize kids to get them to follow your religion?
