Atheists Angry Over ‘Seven in Heaven’ Street Sign Honoring Fallen 9/11 Firefighters

Atheists Angry Over Seven in Heaven Street Sign Honoring Fallen 9/11 FirefightersAtheists are up in arms over part of a street in Red Hook, Brooklyn, that was renamed earlier this month to commemorate fallen 9/11 firefighters. The street — now called “Seven in Heaven Way” — references seven firefighters who lost their lives as part of Engine 202, Ladder 101 and Battalion 32. The Brooklyn Paper writes:

The “Seven in Heaven” firemen — Joseph Gullickson, Brian Cannizzaro, Salvatore Calabro, Thomas Kennedy, Patrick Byrne, Joseph Maffeo, and Terence McShane — were among the first firefighters called to the towers, making it there before the second airplane hit.

“They gave up everything to help — and that’s what sets them apart,” said Ralph Gullickson, Joseph’s brother.

According to some atheists, though, the street’s reference to “heaven” is completely unacceptable and inappropriate. Gothamist has more:

“It’s improper for the city to endorse the view that heaven exists,” said David Silverman of American Atheists“It links Christianity and heroism.”

City Councilmember Sara González shepherded the street sign change through the city council, and we asked her spokesman Mike Schweinsburg if it’s appropriate to use city resources for a sign with religious overtones. “The seven heroes have long been known as the ‘Seven in Heaven,’ ” Schweinsburg tells us. “That‘s something that we didn’t have any hand in, it is the way the community and their families chose to remember them.

So if that is their desire then we are happy to continue to remember them in the way that their family and fellow firefighters prefer to call them.”

The community seems perfectly content with the street sign, which is why the opposition is being met with surprise. These fallen heroes have long been referred to, as González notes, as “Seven in Heaven,” so it was only natural that the commemorative name would be applied to them in that way.

Do you view the street sign as problematic?

How about this compromise, keep this sign for these 7 and then when 7 atheists die doing something heroic they will get a street sign saying ‘Seven in the Ground’.

Tell them to bite my ass. Heroism and Heaven are tied together, at least in my eyes. If they don’t like it they can drive down another street. I have never seen such a bunch of idiot assed people in my life. I just bet you don’t hear them raising “Hell” over the word hell. Dammit if you don’t like how we live then go some place else. There are more of us than there is of you so shut the hell up.

I agree with LACT… every person on this planet only knows about a place called heaven because we were all once children and that is what has been taught to children. I we taught children that we don’t know anything about afterlife events that would be intellectual honesty but most people commenting on this site are not interested in intellectual honesty… they are mostly wishful thinkers like most religious folk

Heaven is not a strictly Christian concept. Most Jews believed in it before Christianity. Many religions have some form odf blessed afterlife. The greeks had the Elysian Fields, the better real estate in Hades. Saying someone is in heaven is often not a doctrinal belief but a hope or assurance that that person is in a better place, either as a reward for a generally good life or enduring suffering OR, for universalists, as the proper and natural destination for the human soul. Some people believe in heaven without believing in God.

Hey, that’s an idea! Let‘s make the USA and ISRAEL GOD’s countries. All CHRISTIANS and Jews can live in these two countries, and everybody else has the rest of the world! There is soooooooooooo much land in Russia and China to be filled, and all those “ghost cities”. Yeah! That’s the ticket!!!

Socialism (Marx) makes the statement clear back in the late 1800s that one of the biggest deterrents to a true socialist society, is Religion. They fear the Moral restraint and faith that builds the individual’s personality. Some aspects of socialism require personal sacrifice for the good of the “State” & the ability to deny others their life, such as the killing of downs syndrome, Mentally handicapped & Physically handicapped at birth for the good of the “State”. Still wonder why kids are taught to hate God in College? http://www.archive.org/details/cu31924002674566

If there is no purpose or meaning in the universe, why would an atheist care if people live their lives as if there is purpose and meaning? Atheists know there is a God and spend their whole lives trying to avoid God’s gaze. So they lash out at everything that reminds them of God’s sovereignty.

Well that’s just stupid even if you are an athiest. If any American Athiests are reading this (how many of you in this group are there? Five maybe?), I suggest you pick your battles more carefully. Your challenge not only offends the religious, but rational athiests as well I imagine. Americans want to honor the victims in their own way and we all have that right. This way is what was chosen.

To all five members of American Athiests I say this to you: just shut up, You are disgrace to your cause, whatever that might be. You want to challenge the status quo? Pick better battles.

Why are atheists bent out of shape over a street name that references a mythological place that gives hope to the uneducated and superstitious masses? I mean if they are TRUE atheists… they shouldn’t really care, correct?

For that matter you could name it, the seven who lost their lives because Bush was derelict in his duty for not preventing these deaths after being repeatedly warned that an attack was eminent, way. You think that would fit on a sign?

I didn’t miss any point, as usual, liberal/atheist hypocrisy. What I didn’t comment on; was because I couldn’t care less. I offer this only as an explanation as the concept of actual apathy appears to escape you. Hmmm, odd for an atheist.

I‘m actually a caramel man myself but then I don’t really fit in with the “blazers” as you put it. I find them a bit too sheepish and passive. That’s just the beck in them.

I look at it this way, Christians already tolerate all of the atheist street signs in the country – the one’s without any Christian or Biblical meaning, like Main Street, Broadway, etc… those are Atheist road signs, so if we are tolerant of the city supporting Atheist road signs, then the Godless & Clueless atheists will just have to learn to tolerate the Christian signs….

The 92% religious in the this country are now backing down to the 5% Godless moron’s of this country, get over yourselves and get lost… if you want to live in a country with no God, go move to North Korea or some other Godless hole in the wall….

      I HAVE THE SOLUTION:

I have been thinking about this for some time.

They keep attacking anything and everything affiliated with religion, right?

I knew they would attack names soon enough, so I already had this figured out.

      Here’s my plan:

One of the PRIMARY seats of this crap is San Francisco.

      Figured it out yet?

They would scream bloody murder if you tried to take away the name of “THEIR CITY”!

So, we enlist the ACLU to force them to change the name of San Francisco.
I’m not a Roman Catholic, so forcing me to recognize this Francis guy as a “saint” is infringing on my rights (using their own logic).
So, they have to rename their beloved city of San Francisco.
Now, they cannot just drop the “San” part, because that still leaves “francisco” which still refers to “Saint Francis”. They cannot even leave it named “Frisco”, because that STILL leaves it named after “Saint Francis”
So, they will have to rename it something entirely different.

      Any suggestions?

As a result of a directive from God, we all came from the same boat, Noah’s Arc. We Shouldn’t be angry at skeptics we shall pray for them.

All Men and women know God exist, skeptics and atheists spend a great deal of time avoiding Him.

Fear God and keep his Commandments. the unbelief is a conscience choice to be decieved
