Maia Disbrow, a 12-year-old from Hamilton County, Tennessee, is $1,000 richer after publicly protesting against government prayer. The young girl received the honor from the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), an atheist group based in Madison, Wisconsin, after she delivered a speech at a Hamilton County Commissioners meeting.
In her July 18 address, Disbrow encouraged local leaders to drop prayers at their meetings. According to a release put out by the FFRF, she got involved in the anti-faith activism after she saw her father complain about the prayers at an earlier meeting. According to the organization, the young girl decided on her own that she wanted to speak out against what she views as a violation of the separation of church and state.
“I realized that there were some things I’d like to say to them. It took me a while to decide because even though I go to a middle school for the arts that is supposed to accept everyone, I was worried,” Disbrow said. “During elementary school, I was bullied about my beliefs and whenever the subject of my religion, or lack thereof, came up, my social status dropped for a few days.”
The young girl went on to claim that the local politicians are acting “like a bunch of fifth-grade bullies.” So, she penned and delivered the speech that can be viewed, below:
“The prayer was very rude to me,” she said of the commissioners’ prayers at government meetings. “It is not fair for you to pray openly to your God without praying to all the others as well.”
Here’s a full transcript of her testimony:
Good morning. My name is Maia Disbrow, and I am twelve years old. I am a perfectly normal young adult, although some of my friends would beg to differ.
I was present at the meeting at which my dad spoke. The prayer was very rude to me and some of my closest friends, not to mention parts of my family.
My dad did not put me up to this. I came because I care about this and things like it. All through elementary school, I was teased and ridiculed by people who I thought were my friends. Whenever the subject of me being a freethinker came up, I was singled out. By my friends. You are doing the same thing that they did to me at every meeting you have. Singling me out. Singling out every single person in Hamilton County who is not Christian.
It is not fair for you to pray openly to your God without praying to all the others as well. I believe a moment of silence would accommodate all beliefs, not just one. And after speaking today, I hope I have some friends left at school next year.
Good day.
Prayer has become an issue of significance in Hamilton County, with residents Tommy Coleman and Brandon Jones (a secular humanist and an atheist) filing a July 3 federal lawsuit over invocations uttered before board meetings.

Posted on August 7, 2012 at 12:52pmWatch John Stossel on “Why people cheat”
-
They cheat when they think “everybody else is doing it”
They cheat when they think “One would not be noticed”
They cheat when they see others cheating
They cheat when they see the bad guys cheating ——-
But introduce the 10 commandments into the picture — and the cheating stops.
Now I don’t care if you believe in God or not…. but …..
I think that UNLESS you have a basis for morals and for your conscience — then you will eventually sell what is left of your soul – one piece at a time – until you are empty inside.
My suggestion to “athiests” is – you don’t have to believe in god — but you cannot deny the POWER of believing in god.
You can SEE that.

People don’t care about the Truth and natural Law even if God shows it to them himself, speaks it to you, and writes it down for you with his own finger. The people in return make their own idols and flick the finger to God. It’s all in recorded in the Bible. People don’t care. We et it. God gets it. You’re no one special.

Posted on August 7, 2012 at 1:43pmAt the opening of each day’s session of the Supreme Court the Justices stand, while one of their officials invokes the protection of God. Since the days of John Marshall, the Crier has said, “God save the United States and this Honorable Court.” Both the Senate and the House of Representatives open their daily sessions with prayer. Every President, from George Washington to Barack Obama, has, upon assuming his Office, asked the protection and help of God, and taken his Constitutional Oath on the Holy Bible.
All fifty state constitutions mention God, and thank him for blessings of civil and religious liberty.
One of the stanzas of our National Anthem reads, “Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land. Praise the Pow’r that hath made and preserved us a nation, Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just. And this be our motto ‘In God is our Trust.’”
President John Adams declared May 9, 1798 as “a day of solemn humility, fasting, and prayer,“ during which citizens of all faiths were asked to pray ”that our country may be protected from all the dangers which threaten it”.
I find the girl’s speech to be rude, disrespectful to our national heritage, and misguided. She is either misinformed or in denial about our true history.

Washington tried to free his slaves, as did many others, but the laws of Virginia made it nearly impossible to do so, as it was in other states. Most of our founding fathers were against slavery, and inherited the practice. The only reason slavery was made lawful by our Constitution was so that the Southern states would ratify the constitution. It was a compromise, for at that time, independence from Great Britain was of the upmost importance. I did not quote the “personal lives” of the founding fathers. I‘ve only quoted what they’ve said as public figures. BTW, I love how you liberals hold double standards. It’s more funny than pathetic. LOL. Faith can move mountains, but it usually works by inspiring thousands of people with shovels. I can’t move a mountain by myself, no matter how strong my faith. Each human has a natural, god given RIGHT, to believe as he chooses. Faith is a choice, subject to universal and soveriegn individual LIBERTY. Morals are what you impose upon yourself. Ethics are what we CHOOSE and AGREE to live by. In America it’s not about faith, or religion, but it’s about FREEDOM of religion, the rule of law, and equal justice under law. In America all forms of religious faith and worship tradition are considered equal in the eyes of the law, with the individual FREE TO CHOOSE, and the government PROHIBITED from infringement of the rights and liberty of ANY individual.

Charity means to love your neighbour, to willingly serve your neighbour, to help out someone in need, to be kind and show compassion, to have a good will towards others, etc. Doing these things feels really good, and I enjoy helping others. I rejoice when someone in need is surprised by the tender affection of a stranger. I have joy in seeing others happy. There’s nothing wrong with seeking the happiness of my fellow citizen and neighbor. Am I suppse to feel bad or guilty of some wrong for expressing these views, and hoping others may do the same? I don’t make myself out to be better than others, but hope to set an example that others may also do the same. That is, treat others as you would like to be treated. She does have a point. A moment of silence would be respectful to all in attendance. It is not right to say “if you don’t like it, leave” when the event is a City Council meeting. That‘s basically saying that if you don’t agree with the prayer, you can not do business with the City Council.
But I do disagree with the assertion that the child is being punished for “free thinking.” This is used time and again by atheists and implies that there is no free thought in Christians. That not a single person ever considered the options and then chose Christ as the correct alternative. That is far more insulting than having to sit through a couple minutes of prayer to a God you do not wish to believe in.

Fact is, she does not have a legitimate point… that’s my point. Why should any council be forced into a moment of silence because you, or her, might feel offended? Are you, is she, the yardstick by which all else is measured?
No one is saying, “that if you don’t agree with the prayer, you can not do business with the City Council.” Plenty of people disagree with plenty that all city councils do, yet they continue to do business with those city councils. In other words, did you find out your answers through investigation, or did you take another person‘s or book’s ideas as complete and utter fact AT ALL before discovering your answers? Remember, if you take the Bible as the infallible (therefore, unfalsifiable) word of God, you are, by definition, not a Free Thinker. I don’t take anything as infallible.

Taking the Bible as infallible is taking it as an authority. If it can’t be wrong, then it must have an authority on things that are inconsistent with reality, such as, I don’t know, half of the entire book. Dragons, Seraphim, talking bushes, etc.
Please, I‘d like for you to explain how it isn’t a authority. This should be funny.

Posted on August 8, 2012 at 2:09pmLOL. Your twisted, binary view of the universe doesn’t work on me. First off, “free thinker” doesn’t exclusively apply to atheists, agnostics, whatever. Second, one may be a free thinker, and through reasoning, or because of reasoning, seek other paths. If by “free thinker” you litterally mean forming an opinion without any source or authority at all, then you’re an “anarchist”, or rebel, not a free thinker. In fact, many so called Deists became a believer in a Grand Creator and his eternal Laws through reason, or furthermore based, substantiated and proved their belief in a God through reason and science. In fact, it was the enlightment era that taught the universe was ordered, and could be figured out. That there were certain eternal truths that applied to all men everywhere. But you keep revising words, and changing history just to fit your deluded perspective. You ain’t fooling anyone.

She’s like a parrot, nothing else.
I’m an atheist. I simply don’t believe, because I’ve seen nothing that makes me believe or convinces me that any of the 8-odd million gods people on this planet worship exists. But you know, if someone, even in a local meeting with local leaders, wants to pray, why not let them do it? It doesn’t affect me, I don‘t have to take part in it when I don’t like it.
There’s a rift among atheists as well. Some think that everyone should do what they tell them to do. Others, like me, don’t care what others do as long as they leave me in peace. You can pray all you want. You can have your crosses set up all you want. If you want to pray after a local meeting, fine, go ahead, knock yourselves out. I‘m just not going to take part in it because I don’t believe. Why would some people praying offend me so much? It’s ridiculous! It’s a world of sissies!
Neither you nor I can force our point of view onto each other. That is wrong. So what this little girl is doing is pretty wrong in my view.

Those Brigades which have none will attend the places of worship nearest to them. It is expected that officers of all ranks will, by their attendance, set an example for their men. While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest Glory to laud the more distinguished Character of Christian. Sound science and real revelation of His Word do not conflict.
If it appears that the Bible and Science conflict than it is either the lack of revelation of the Bible, or it is not real science. The reverential fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom or knowledge.
Along with the religions of this world some at least in part, have made a religion out of Christianity. They have replaced the Word of God with the religious traditions of men. The Word of God is the power of God for salvation. External ritualism and doctrines of men are powerless to save.

Report Post »The_Knower
Posted on August 7, 2012 at 5:24pm…says who? I’m pretty sure my DNA determines what species I am.
I’m not going to allow more vague implications from Christians. If you’re so sure that souls exist, please, define what a soul is and make your case for their existence using evidence that can be accessed by anyone. What is a soul made out of? What determines which things have souls and which don’t? What are the factors that lead to one having a soul? In reality, things can be investigated until vast amounts of detail are shown. What details does a soul have? What are a soul’s parts? Does a soul change? If so, through what processes does it change? How does a soul affect its surroundings? Through what process does a soul go through to affect its surroundings? If you are certain that souls exist, please, behave like you live in the real world and answer these questions, questions that should have been expected by you.
Report Post »KickinBack
Posted on August 7, 2012 at 10:19pmThose are good questions. But if you’re looking for a scientific answer, you’ll never find it. Oh, I could go with the “prove that souls don’t exist” retort, but it’s completely pointless. You’ll have to find the answers out for yourself…And trust me, there are many, many, MANY things that *modern* science can’t explain, yet that doesn‘t mean they don’t exist.
Report Post »The_Knower
Posted on August 7, 2012 at 10:46pmWhat you said made absolutely no sense. Literally, it was incoherent. If something is unexplainable through science, like you take souls to be, it literally cannot exist. How else would you explain something except through science? Seriously, give me the alternative that you find out answers through. I doubt that you have any.
Oh, and don’t say “FAITH”. The point about faith is that you are eventually right, just after you die. If you experience an afterlife after you die, you would learn of it through your observation of it existing, right? Observation is one of the key tenets of science. Therefore, you would still be using science to prove that your faith was valid.
That’s the wonder of science for you. It’s very, very clear. Not vague and sadistic like Christianity.

The pain of your flesh being roasted constantly, bubbling and blistering skin never fully falling away. Remind your children of how, if they don’t believe in your book (despite any criticism they might have), they‘ll suffer tremendously as their intestines are dragged out by Satan’s minions and feasted upon, only for them to regrow to start the process all over again. Posted on August 7, 2012 at 1:26pmit’s best to simply laugh at a guy like JOHN. he’s not playing in the same realm as most of us. it’s an unfair fight, like picking on a cripple. no matter what we say he will believe that God is most high, the creator of all things on heaven and earth, and that we humans are special to him. never mind the trillions of stars in our universe, many of which likely have life. Earth is special, as are we, the highest order of thinking creatures on Earth, to his God.
religion was created to help us understand who we are and how we got here. now that we‘ve got it mostly figured out we simply don’t need it anymore. people will cling to it for its cultural and historical value, but ultimately it will prove to be a passing phase in human evolution. soon enough we will outgrow our infantile needs for a cosmic father figure. probably not in my lifetime, but soon enough.

It’s something i never got. When I hear Christians(or any religion for that matter) say “look how long our religion has been around” as it‘s some kind of proof of it’s truthfulness.
Even if you’re a young earth Creationists who says the Earth is 10,000 years old, Christianity has been prevalent only 20% of the time.
Let‘s say you’re not a young earth creationists, but go by the thinking that man has only been on here 100,000 years(some scientists think anywhere from 100-250,000 years), then that means Christianity has been prevalent only 2% of mans existence.
2,000 years is a drop in the bucket in terms of evolution and that does nothing to prove that because Christianity has been around for so long, therefore it means it’s true.
Judaism has been around longer then Christianity, but surely Christians won’t say that Judaism is more true then their faith in Jesus.

it’s true that Scientific discovery has drastically altered the religious landscape. up until 300 years ago, there were few natural explanations for many of life’s great mysteries. those theologians clinging to the God of the Gaps find an ever shrinking space for which their God can fit. those Believers clinging to Biblical miracles have yet to embrace the natural world in a meaningful way. we’ve come a long way in a short time and it will take much longer for people to shed their ties to their cultural affiliations. but it will happen.

It then also has the nerve to say that the people they hijacked from are rejecting the actual God(the one that the previous people made up)?
Give me a break.
There is nothing intelligent in the claim that the Earth is 10,000 years old.
I really do hope people realize that the person who wrote the Old Testament…… wasn’t actually around when that stuff happened.
You are then saying that a person who looked around, and wrote how he thought the world came to be……….was divinely inspired and got EVERYTHING correct.
