Army Agrees to Host, Pay $50,000 Toward Concert for Atheists

Rock Beyond Belief Atheist Event to be Held at Fort BraggIn a win for military atheists (or “free thinkers” as they like to be called), U.S. Army officials have come on board to support “Rock Beyond Belief” — a concert being planned for nonbelievers and their enthusiasts at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. This development, which is sure to appease atheists, came after some church-state separation groups petitioned the Secretary of the Army last month. Below, watch a trailer for the event:

These groups were upset following support for a Christian concert that was also held at the military installment last September. They claimed that the Evangelical concert gave “selective benefits” to religious groups. The Christian Century (via RNS) has more:

That concert, staged by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, received more than $50,000 in financial support from the base, according to records obtained by local atheists through the Freedom of Information Act. The nonreligious concert will receive the same funds and will be held at a similar venue at the base.

Military atheists are hailing the decisions as a major victory, and say they are on the “cusp of a major breakthrough.”

Rock Beyond Belief Atheist Event to be Held at Fort Bragg

An advertisement used within the "Rock Beyond Belief" trailer

This announcement comes after a group of atheists and skeptics came together at Fort Bragg earlier this year to form Military Atheists and Secular Humanists, or MASH. The group, which meets regularly in homes and bars outside of the military base, has been working toward official recognition as a “faith” group. Back in April, the group’s membership included 65 people (out of 57,000 active duty members who live on or around the post). As The Blaze reported:

Meetings of military personnel who are non-theists – an umbrella term for the many varieties of nonbelievers – have been held at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida and aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. But groups of any kind are prohibited from meeting on Army bases without official recognition.

If the Fort Bragg group succeeds, it will be overseen by the Chaplain Corps. That might seem contradictory for a group defined by its lack of belief, but it means MASH’s literature would be available along with Bibles and Qurans. It could raise funds on base and, its members say, they could feel more comfortable approaching chaplains for help with personal problems. Recognition would also be an official sign that not believing in God is acceptable, something members say is lacking now.

Rock Beyond Belief Atheist Event to be Held at Fort BraggThe “Rock Beyond Belief” concert was originally supposed to be held last April, but the event was cancelled when the garrison commander refused to authorize it. It was then that the ACLU, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State and other groups chimed in.

Now, the event is back on and is slated for March 31, 2012. It will be free for all military members and the public. Of course, atheist superstar and author Richard Dawkins will be there to speak, among others.

What do you think? Considering that the base put $50,000 toward a Christian concert, is this a fair move — should the same amount go to pay for atheists to celebrate their non-belief? Take our poll:

Pay for a religious concert for the soldiers… no.
Pay for an anti-religious concert for the soldiers… no.

Just give the soldiers a concert that all can attend and leave religion and/or politics out of it.

Atheism is a religious belief. In order to choose not to believe in God one has to first presume that God does exist. Otherwise, what’s the point ? If as a Christian I choose to believe that God exists and is the rewarder of all those who believe in Him and upon death find out I was wrong, what have I lost ?Nothing. So, let the 65 Atheist have their concert, while the other 57,000 who live on and around the Army Base worship the Lor and pray for the salvation of ALL sinners..

If as an Atheist someone chooses not to believe that God exists and is the Judge of all mankind and upon death find out they were wrong to not believe in Him they will lose everything. In Mathew 10:28 Jesus Christ said, ” Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell “. In Luke 12:4-5 the Lord Jesus Christ said, “Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear Him, which after that He hath killed hath power to cast into hell: yea I say unto you, Fear Him”.

Atheism is a NON RELIGIOUS BELIEF. The attempts to transform this country is all too obvious. Patriotism is another thing they tend to hate. This nation, under God. They want to bend what we have established which was a Constitution inspired by Judeo Christian beliefs. Their motive to establish atheism as a religion is from their hearts as an enemy to God and His moral authority. Liberals want be liberated from Gods laws and all other rule, in which all that is left it chaos, hence why they cannot ever consistently agree among themselves. To have religious or religion established, it must have an active roll for it in itself is an action of practices, ethics and so forth.

And religion is a metaphysical belief system;it adresses why we exist, where we came from and where we may be going. Ethics is a cultural and individualistic belief about what are right and wrong actions and behaviors involving the self, other people in both small and large groups;families, one on one relationships, tribes [cultures or nations] and across cultures[tribes, and nations etc]. Morality is relative, [the appropriate sanctions for crimes varies across differing times and places but all cultures have codes regarding crimes] ethics is fundamental and universal though it varies in it’s expression.Religion is irrelevent to any moral ,ethical code.[though religion can conform to basic ethical codes but does not necessarily].

NOSTATE – Disgruntled Christians like you give other athiests a bad name. There is something very familiar about your proslytizing, though.

Our army just took a nose dive.. I think there is a skunk in the woodpile.. one with liberal leanings.. needs to be court marshalled ASAP.. We need God fearing men running our armed services..

NOSTATE- In my case, Jupiter. And no, I would still not like it if it was publically funded.
As you probably don’t know, this pagan is always in defense of each individuals’ free will to worship how and who they please (yes, that includes Christianity). But as a true Libertarian, public funding (for the most part) are two words that lead to many of the problems that have turned our nation away from being a constitutional republic.

Atheism qualifies as a religious belief… this is NOT the separation of church and state. Shame on our military and our country, once again.

Was it separation of church and state when it was a concert for Christians?

Since there is no Separation of Church and State… only an Atheist ACLU, Commie propaganda tool…. you don‘t know what you’re talking about. This country is founded on Religious Freedom – including the right now to have a religion (aka the Church of the Godless) – Religion and the free exercise of is protected and Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of, and that would include the Army sponsoring such an event, so long as if requested, it would do the same for another religion or all religions, the fact that Atheist claim NO religion, well then they are entitled to equal treatment because this is about the fair exercise OF religion, not the free exercise of NO religion, so if you want equal treatment, then you ARE a religion – the Religion of the Godless and as such then you will have to play by your same rules that attempt to enforce of Sep of Church & State… door swings both ways on this one Godless Boy…. You can’t have it both ways…

      God Bless America.

      @nostate.
A concert “at” Christmas is different than a concert “for” Christmas. All kinds of events occur at Christmas but not for Christmas.
