Atheists Demand That MA Public School Band Stop Performing ‘God Bless America’

FFRF Sends Letter to Wayland Schools Against God Bless AmericaThe Wayland School District in Wayland, Massachusetts, is pushing back against an atheist group’s claim that a high school band playing “God Bless America” is somehow an unconstitutional act. In fact, the district, led by Superintendent Dr. Paul Stein, plans to flat-out ignore the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s (FFRF) letter alleging separation of church violations when the song is played at school functions.

The song was played by the Wayland High School band on two days of American patriotism — Pearl Harbor Day and Memorial Day. While Stein claims that he respects the separation between government and religion, he also believes the Madison, Wisconsin-based FFRF is taking the situation a bit too far. A parent‘s complaint allegedly sparked the group’s letter.

“I appreciate where they’re coming from, I really do, but on the other hand I think it’s a question of where the line is drawn,” Stein said, according to The Metro West Daily News. “There has to be a sense about whether the schools are fostering the promotion or practice of religion, and I don’t believe the band playing ‘God Bless America’ does that.”

The school’s warning about the song came from Rebecca Markert, an attorney on staff with the FFRF. Of particular note is the song’s line, which reads, “As we raise our voices in solemn prayer” — something the organization clearly takes in its literal form. Markert asked the district to imagine what would happen if the students were singing and playing a song that proclaimed, “Allah Bless America.”

“A prayer conceived, hosted and advocated by a publicly supported school does not pass constitutional muster,” reads the letter that was sent to Stein in July. “The repeated use of the song sends a message to students that the school is endorsing and compelling belief in a god.”

“There are many other patriotic songs that are secular and that would be suitable for a school setting,” she added, according to the Daily News.

But Stein is doubling down and blatantly ignoring the FFRF’s request — respectfully, of course. This decision is based on legal advice from the district’s representation.

“It’s clearly within a very patriotic song, and many patriotic songs have some reference to a deity,” Stein concluded.

While the FFRF’s case may be compelling to some, school committee member Beth Butler claims the words were never sung at Wayland and that the music was merely played. So far, the FFRF hasn‘t formally responded to the district’s decision.

One parent complained! Why didn’t someone tell the idiot lawyer to get a petion signed by a majority. If we get to the point where the majority wants Allah Bless America, so be it. We took prayer out of school and look at he kids that have been killed because of godless kids that have never been to Church or heard a prayer. It’s time to go all CHARTER SCHOOLS and get the government out of our schools. Give them back to the states. I know they wouldn’t be able to build those big fancy schools. Whats more important, teaching our kids the real america or have fancy schools and unionized school teachers just for the pay and not really teaching. Not all teachers are like that, but a LOT of them are.

Send them back to read the Declaration of Independence! This country was founded on the premise of liberty to worship God, and to tolerate everyone’s right to do that. In fact, it is the government’s responsibility to see that that right is not hindered in any way. ACCOMMODATION of a religion or religious practice is not the same as ESTABLISHMENT.

There are two problems with your “solution,” perhaps three. The Wayland public schools are among the very best in the nation, well run, excellent parent involvement, etc. Then if we abandon them for any reason, those who cannot afford to go elsewhere lose their opportunity for a decent education–and that is a lifetime opportunity that that child can never “make up.” The solution is not to abandon all public schools–many in the Northeast and the Midwest are top-notch, elsewhere, too. The solution is to break the union LIFO rules and other work rules where those rules prohibit the best teachers from teaching by protecting the worst.

I don‘t think there’s much you can do to fight back until the supreme court reverses it’s decisions. I mean you might look into exposing the lawyers that are constantly suing to remove Christian symbols on public lands and shine the light on them or petition for an ammendment to the Constitution. I’m even an agnostic that thinks the courts have it backwards. All they seem to be doing is making people miserable and crosses and such don’t bother me none.

No where in the US Constitution does it state that prayer is not allowed in school. The US Constitution has been frequently misquoted and misinterpreted. Separation of Church and State was written into the US Constitution to prevent a mono-Theocractic America. The Protestant English Bishops had a lot of governing authority in Great Britian, so between the Church (Bishops) and State (Monarchy), the people had virtually no rights. The framers of the US Constitution wanted the US Government to be of the people, by the people, and for the people, with the freedom to practice whatever religion they wanted, and their rights would not be infringed upon. It irks me everytime an atheist sees soldiers praying, schools saying the pledge of allegiance, or court houses with the ten commandments, and cries that violates the Constitution. Soldiers, schools, and court houses are not governing bodies and therefore do not fall within the “church and state” parameters. Government employees, offices, and structures are representative of the government, but are not governing authorities and do not fall within the parameters. A good example of what would fall under the parameters would be the Vatican City and the pope. Our Constitution would prevent us from having a one-religion government with a religious head of state, though Catholicism in itself would not be forbidden. In fact, suppressing a NON-governing body from prayer violates the Constitution.

Atheism is a religion and only a country UNDER God can separate religion from the state and the reason is simple, if a country is not under God it will replace God. Of course, try and get an Atheist to understand that concept; what a bunch of idiots.

The two greatest threats to the separation of religion and State are Atheism and the Government itself. We already live in a country where Government has replaced God and you are required by law to worship the State with the almighty dollar. What could be a greater violation of the principle of the State being prohibited from establishing a religion?

How on earth is singing the national anthem the making of a law that establishes a religion. My God these Atheists are completely out of hand and at the very least should have to pay a huge fine for filing a frivolous law suit.

@ TOM…I have to agree with a good portion of your assertion. When religion is removed another “religion” takes over that is not only not separate from the state, but IS the state. They determine your rights, they determine the exercise thereof of the extent of your liberties, it becomes the supreme authority for society, it demands sacrifice at the will of the State. Statism is all that is left when one removes religion. Almighty government has the “solutions”, almighty government will determines societies moral direction and the consequences for disobedience. Several well known atheists agree and that is why they prefer religion within a society because they know when men obtain power and believe they only answer to themselves they oppress their fellow man in good conscience.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience”. —– C. S. Lewis

This is something the school should be proud of. It means they are doing their job effectively. Stick to your guns, Wayland. It is irrational to lie about the existence of the laws of nature and nature’s God.
