Atheists Give High Schooler $1,000 Scholarship for Dressing as Jesus on ‘Fictional Character Day’

Jeff Shott, a 17-year-old sophomore at Summit High School in Spring Hill, Tennessee, is $1,000 richer thanks to the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), an atheist group that frequently attacks faith and religion in the U.S. Shott won the scholarship money after dressing up as Jesus Christ for his school’s “fictional character day” in January.

The teenager wasn’t disciplined for wearing the costume, the Tennessean reports, but Summit Hill Principal Charles Farmer did tell him that he would need to change if his outfit became a distraction. The student did, inevitably, remove his robes and sash (he even had a hammer and nail to go along with the costume) to purportedly avoid problems with school administrators.

The mere action of wearing what many Christians would dub an offensive costume brought Shott financial support from Annie Laurie Gaylor and her FFRF organization. As a result of his costume, the student became the first to receive the Paul Gaylor Memorial Student Activist scholarship (named after Gaylor’s father).

“We wanted to encourage him, and we know the cost of higher education. This is just a small stipend toward that,” Gaylor explained, going on to praise the sophomore for ”spunk and a light touch with his actions.”

Of course, the FFRF also had a bone to pick with the school for allegedly having a conversation for Shott about the Jesus costume. According to the organization, the student was approached by the principal, an assistant principal and a school resource officer who said that they wish he had dressed like Zeus and not Jesus.

Gaylor claims that the student contacted the FFRF and, as it typically does, the group sent a subsequent complaint letter to the district’s Director of Schools Mike Looney. The note, which claimed that the discussion and incident was a violation of Shott’s First Amendment rights, also went on to rail against an alleged classroom discussion in which a teacher said she believed in the Biblical story of Adam and Eve.

Shott describes his experience (read all of the details) on the organization’s web site:

The head principal, Dr. Farmer…came up and asked me to come to his office. The assistant principal, Ms. Lamb, and Officer Pewit, school resource officer, were waiting outside the cafeteria. Dr. Farmer asked me whom I was portraying. I told him that I was Jesus Christ. He said he had been hoping my answer would have been Zeus (or some other variation of a mythological deity).

Even though I’m typically very openly atheistic and have no problem discussing my views, I was a little distraught that all three school authority figures were addressing me at once. Dr. Farmer claimed I couldn’t have things both ways — I couldn’t complain about teachers talking about Jesus and also dress up as Jesus on Fictional Character Day.

I’d had a long talk with him earlier after my science teacher, in reply to a question about evolution, had publicly said things such as “Evolution is just a theory,” “I don’t believe it at all,” and, “We actually come from Adam and Eve.” It’s fairly clear that she openly advocates not only Intelligent Design, but straight-up biblical creationism.

While the FFRF claims that his free speech was trampled, the U.S. Supreme Court has granted schools the right to limit both commentary and expression if it impedes the learning process.

Regardless of the legalities in this scenario, the FFRF continues to enjoy rewarding potentially-offensive displays among non-believing adults and youths. This is merely another example of their anti-faith values being put into practice.

Funny! But here is the problem, believe he is God or not, he was a real person who walked the earth and was killed on a cross. Other sourses besides the Bible confirm that, so you can’t say he is a fictional character. I don’t think this young man will do well in college with that kind of logical thinking.

But what do you expect from someone who is 17 and still a sophmore in a public school where they pass you if you can stay awake in class.

Ah let them make fun. When Jesus comes back again soon, they will see the truth, but by then, it will be way too late for them. I learn a LONG time ago that it is better to keep my mouth shut and not make fun of anything religious or sacred to others or it will come back to haunt me.

Just ignore these people and pray for them, but in the meantime, DO NOT GIVE THEM THE TIME OF DAY. This is what they want – TO DIVIDE US ALL. As a follower of Christ, I feel sorry for them because THEY DO NOT KNOW THE TRUTH. THEREFORE, THEY WILL NOT BE FREE in Jesus Christ. Very, very sad. LOVE THE SINNER, HATE THE SIN is what I live by. God made us all. He also gave us the freedom to choose between HIM or Satan. If you do NOT follow God, you follow Satan, whether you know it or not – you have still chosen a side.

Good people do NOT belong to Christ. Those who actually FOLLOW CHRIST AND ARE OBEDIENT TO HIM, do belong to Him. You fill in the rest, yet, know that Jesus still wants us to love those who are NOT His. Pray for those who spitefully use you – IN ANY WAY.

Many of you are saying that there were many other historical sources for the existence of Jesus outside of the bible. While you can say that, there are no contemporary sources. No historians from Jesus’s time wrote ANYTHING about him. Therefore, none of these other “sources” count. There is no evidence outside of the bible that corroborates the existence of Jesus. Even the earliest gospels were written at least 20 to 30 years after his reported death. It amazes me how many people blindly believe this. Our modern media can’t get stories correct now, you expect the transcribers of the gospels, who got the stories handed down to them after many alterations, could possibly get the story straight? The fact is, there is no extra-biblical sources that prove that Jesus ever truly walked the earth.

evolution is a model which cannot be proven – but it can be disproven. It provides a framework or model which makes testable predictions about the universe. If it’s predictions fail, the theory will be rejected. it’s not a creation theory (inflation theory is, however, if you’re interested) so please stop assuming people treat it as such.
mythology is a collection of stories about supernatural creatures. They, like theories, are also not provable or disprovable. Mythology is not an empirical model of the universe that posits the possibility of its inaccuracy and undergoes rigorous testing of its claims. It just insists on its own accuracy and this isn’t good enough for some people – especially when the stories involve 7-headed dragons and the sky having sex with the earth.

Yep, the evidence of mass murder by a supposedly loving God is right around the corner.

They’re fools are they? Well you can thank science for that computer or smart phone you’re typing on. Hell, you can thank them for modern medicine, advanced communications, jet travel, modern building design and construction, the car you drive, pretty much anything you use on a daily basis, really. For a bunch of fools, they’ve done a pretty good job of advancing and improving human life.

And as for the Piltdown Man, yes it was a hoax. But it was ultimately proven to be a hoax by evolutionary scientists, and it is not listed as evidence for evolution in any reputable science textbook. The evidence for evolution is massive, however, while the evidence for creationism and a 6000 thousand year old earth is… well there is none. Here’s a few sites that will give you some basic info on evolution:
      http://www.teachthemscience.org/evidence
      http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/
      http://evolution.berkeley.edu/evolibrary/search/topicbrowse2.php?topic_id=46
And I found these just with a ten second Google search. Evolution is also seen on a daily basis. It’s the reason we have to get new vaccines every year, and natural selection is the driving force behind why more and more African elephants are being born without tusks (due to the influence of poachers on the elephant population). Evolutionary theory also made many predictions that proved to be true (which any solid theory should be able to do). Some predictions can be seen here:

      1) You admit that scientists are smarter and more educated than you, yet somehow they are the fools? Is it because many are atheist/agnostic? It’s no coincidence that the smartest people on the planet who devote their lives to studying the natural world tend to largely be non-religious.

      2) Evidence of evolution is dwindling? I wasn’t aware of that! Evidence of evolution is actually quite substantial. Here are some sites that will show you the basics of evolution and its evidence:
      http://anthro.palomar.edu/evolve/evolve_3.htm
      http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/

      @ Blammo, continued
      3) Scientists’ mission is not to avoid God or piss off Christians. They come to the conclusions they do because of observable evidence and repeatable experiments. And the evidence all points to evolution. Thousands of thousands of scientists have come to the same conclusion, because all the evidence points that way!

      4) The Piltdown Man was indeed a hoax, a hoax disproved by evolutionary scientists. It was the result of some schemers who just wanted to get famous. It absolutely does not disprove evolutionary theory. And the Piltdown Man is not used as evidence of evolution. There’s mountains of other reliable evidence.

      5) Textbooks constantly changing is a good thing. They are updated as new evidence emerges and new facts of the natural world are discovered. They change because knowledge advances! And the Bible has actually gone through many revisions. It was passed along through many stories, written down by many people, and translated by many more people. Then more people picked and chose the parts they liked and presto, you have the Bible. But the Bible was written down long ago, and it gets its substance from stories, not real world evidence. It doesn’t change much anymore, but I fail to see how that’s a good thing. How much pertinence does a book thousands of years old have on modern day life?

Because that completely obliterates any reason to “think” and to “achieve” anything in this one short life we have.

[Maybe you’ll just go to sleep and never awake? PROVE IT TO ME.]
Well I certainly cannot prove that without existing in any shape or form other than a corpse. Perhaps YOU should prove something is on the other side seeing as you have a better chance of sending a message with your emotion based belief system. Just make it a clear message that can be verified by science and not one based on what some other lunatic zealot says.

[I already know where I will go, to be with my Lord and Savior forever – ETERNITY without Satan, without ANY evil, WITHOUT PEOPLE WHO DO NOT FOLLOW CHRIST NOW.]
If you’re so sure of yourself and that your religion (out of all religions) is correct then you need not waste anymore time here. Go posthaste. Personally I think an eternity with your “lord an savior” would be tearfully boring.

To speak for god is to speak as god. It’s clear why you choose to believe what you do. Your arguments are feeble without an omnipotent sky bully to back them up because they are not backed by logic or reason. Just emotion.

[I am praying for you to BE FREE once again.]
Give it a rest. I can no more believe in your religion than you can believe in leprechauns. Maybe in my old age when dementia sets in, but that would hardly count.

Do you want me to watch every video? One of those playlists contains over 80 videos.
Do I have to read every single word contained in the posted links?
It’s not like I have never heard any of the arguments before.
Why does the Bible not have to change?
Shouldn’t there be tons of crazy things in the Bible that can easily be proven false?

Why do scientists keep trying to fabricate a “missing link”?
Shouldn’t there be all kinds of missing links to find?

I did watch some of the videos in the playlist.
Do you realize the first one was claiming a guy named Hovind agrees with evolution?
In other words, he’s right, but that is evolution he’s talking about.
Semantics? Is that the difference between creationism and darwinism? I think not.

Blammo, evolutionary scientists do not think there is a “missing link” as you creationists keep thinking. Please, please, please, learn something prior to posting. There are thousands of transitional forms between our evolutionary ancestors and us. We are actually a transitional form between us and whatever we evolve into.

The piltdown man is actually a testament to the integrity of evolutionary biologists. It proves that science polices itself quite well.

Also, you speak about us not accepting your “sources.” We don’t because they are not tested. We also would never accept bible verse as any kind of proof. Using the bible to prove the existence of your god is like using a comic book to prove the existence of superman.

Your side has no evidence at all. You say we don’t? There is more evidence for evolution than there is for gravity! Every science supports the theory of evolution. Every one of them points to the same story.

      Monkey,

Romans 1:20-21 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Read it carefully. You are without excuse.

You say my sources are untested. Some of them may be, but not all. There are bible believing scientists you know? Hovind isn’t the only creationist out there. There are also scientists who believe in intellegent design. Not necessarily bible believers or even christians, but they believe they have proof of intellegent design.

Some scientific sources are also untested. You don’t actually believe all that global warming nonesense, do you?

This group is a pack of cowards; it’s easy to pick on Christianity, in fact it’s becoming a national passtime. Why don’t they show what they are really made of and mock Mohammed. But the pansies don’t have the guts to mock Islam nor the guts to say they are really the “freedom from Christianity” group. They deserve only scorn for their hypocrisy and cowardice. They take nothing away from the followers of Christ but only show themselves to be fools and cowards.

Christianity dominates America, to the point where we have to fight to get equal representation or prevent favoritism. If an Islamic group took the time and put up religious displays on public property, I guarantee you an Atheist group will protest that. The thing is, they aren’t doing that. Christians are the only ones that are doing that here in America right now. Muslims in America aren’t putting up their religious symbols on public property.

No lawsuits even though they put their religious footbaths in colleges and airports. Even though their employees (even state and federal employees) and students insist on breaks 5 times a day. Atheists are nothing but another one of the many tentacles of the current democommie machine which is why they continue to impose their agenda. I don’t collect baseball cards, but I don’t have a vendetta against those that do, that being said, if you truly don’t belive in anything, (well except of course big tyrannical government), leave those of us that do alone, because it shouldn’t matter to you anyway. I’m thinking that if I was a true atheist, that I simply walk past a Sunday mass and just be glad that I didn’t have to dress up, bathe, brush my teeth, fix my dreadlocks, iron my tiedyed shirt or hemp shorts, shine my berkenstocks, or put out my doobie, and be content knowing that my foodstamp card still buys slurpys and bbq’d chips on the weekends, but that’s just me.

I don’t have that much of a problem with the costume, especially since, though Jesus himself was real from the historical standpoint, what he dressed up as was the popular view of Jesus’ appearance which is fictional in origin. But I really don’t see why he should get money for this. I’d almost go as far to say this is a form of active discrimination in favor of Atheists which, while probably legal, certainly is not about helping the student. This was the FFRF deciding to rub people’s face in it because some atheist decided to actively insult them. I don’t see people praising anyone for actively antagonizing atheists.
