Atheists Offer $1,500 Reward After ‘Jesus Christ Is a Myth’ Sign Reportedly Stolen From IL Park

Over the weekend, we told you about the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s (FFRF) anti-Easter banner that was posted in a park in Streator, Illinois. The sign, which was intended to combat crosses and a Christian, pro-Easter message posted in the same park, has now reportedly gone missing and atheists are offering a $1,500 reward for information about the crime.

According to the FFRF, a church-state separatist group, the banner, which read, “Nobody died for your sins. Jesus Christ is a myth,” was taken on Saturday. The atheist organization subsequently reported the sign missing to the Streator Police Department and also told authorities about alleged damage to the posts holding it up.

“It is so dismaying to see mob rule prevail. This vandalism amounts to censorship and suppression of minority viewpoints,” proclaimed Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the FFRF. “This crime against our banner shows the harm when a local government purports to create a ‘public forum’ for religion on government property. The only viewpoint that is going to be heard in Streator is a Christian viewpoint.”

In an effort to find the individual or individuals behind the crime, the organization has promised the $1,500 financial reward. MyWebTimes.com reports that the offenses committed — both the theft and vandalism — are misdemeanors. But due to the fact that it was the atheistic message that was being targeted, FFRF staff attorney Patrick Elliot maintains that the action could be treated as a Class 4 felony under the state’s hate crime law.

A replacement may be hung in the coming days. Since the group originally had until April 13 to hang its initial anti-Jesus banner, they will be able to display a new one until the same date.

Karma? Karma would be if the cross and the sign were stolen as well. Do you understand the concept of Karma? I don’t believe you do…

Now back to the new story. So in your opinions, property rights are null and void correct? That sign was owned by someone and had legal permission from the city to be placed in that park. If you believe it’s right to steal this sign, then you shouldn’t be upset when Big Government steals more of your money from your paycheck. You shouldn’t be upset at eminent domain acquisitions.

I swear, most of you are the most hypocritical people I’ve ever seen. Is private property rights only reserved for God fearing Conservatives?

If you read the original article, the main argument was made that there are so many various churches that these signs and crosses could have been placed. The fact that they were placed on PUBLIC (read: Tax payer funded) property is the issue and if they allow for Christian symbols to be displayed, there ought to be alternate views allowed. The city agreed and gave them permission to place their symbol. They would also have been happy if NEITHER sign would have been put on display. That’s the ultimate goal. Keep public property neutral as everyone has part ownership of that land (through taxation) which means you just have to display your signs and cross on your own PRIVATE property.

      American Soldier,

I’m not arguing either way, but I would like to respectfully point out that there have been numerous reports of people stealing Christian creche figures, crosses, and other items during Advent and Christmas. Whether they were atheists on the move or not, we’ll never know, but they sure didn’t respect church property or private property.

Secondly, another poster brought up a really good point by asking how do we know they themselves didn’t steal it? It wouldn’t be the first time something like that was done and that particular maneuver dates back to the Resurrection when according to the “authorities” the disciples came and stole the body. And the authorities were so kind to the Roman guards posted outside the tomb! The soldiers were told by the authorities to say they fell asleep while on watch. Nothing like a little death sentence to liven things up, wouldn’t you say?

Here’s what I learned from the good Christian Conservative Patriots (TM) here on The Blaze.

-Violating one of the Ten Commandments (Thou Shalt Not Steal) is apparently OK if you’re stealing from non-christians.
      - The First Amendment not only allows you to express your opinions, it also gives you the right to silence the opinion of others.
      - Fundamentalist christians apparently have no problem borrowing heathen concepts like Karma from the Hindu, the Jain, the Sikhs and other Buddhists.
      - Hypocrisy is not lethal

I always wonder why atheists are so offended by expressions of Christian faith. They park their viewpoint next to Christian displays for contrast as if they are expressing a religious view of their own, rather than having no beliefs at all and remaining silent. trying to convince Christians their religion is a myth, likewise, does little to further the cause of separation of church and state, which the aforementioned group says is their goal. Why denigrate Christians instead of the state? Not sure why they are so hurt by Christian faith or even care at all.

The point is public vs private property. The park is public property, owned by tax payers. Atheists pay taxes. If you read the original article, they have no problem had these signs been placed on church property, private property owned by the church and her donors. It‘s the fact that it’s on PUBLIC land that, in essence, is partly own by tax paying Atheist.

These people are from Wisconsin and have nothing to do with the towns they disrupt. The people of the towns pay their property taxes and are the owners of the public property – NOT out of towners who invade to cause trouble. This point should be brought up in all legal arguments.

Intellectually honest atheists recognize that Jesus Christ of Nazareth was an actual historical figure. In fact, his existence is one of the single most provable facts of history based on so many attempts of man to disprove his existence. THIS is hate speech:

“Nobody died for your sins. Jesus Christ is a myth,”

A true atheist has no reason whatsoever to attack any religion.

This is very much like the difference between wanting justice to be served in the Trayvon situation versus demanding a bounty dead or alive poster. One is fair to ask for, the other is racist hate-crime murder.

No. We would just add it to the list. Frankly I think we are getting used to it by now.

There is ONE truth and we will ALL know the truth one day… well, unless we are all just cosmic accidents that mathematically and scientifically should not exist; in that case it is simply lights out. But hey, science and logic are in control and if science is wrong you can just reissue some text books and it will be all better. But if God is alive and well and Jesus is who He said He is then well you have been told and warned time and time again. What will be your excuse? It was silly to believe.

What I think is the greatest rip-off of evolution is why is humanity the most developed and seemingly most set apart of all species? Out of all the gazzilions of years, chemical cocktails and what-nots we somehow are the only ones who got this far? Especially given our amazing ability to choose incorrectly almost every time. Some would say we were set apart and put in charge but that is more of that silly talk. I am sure it is just some randomly occurring phenomenon. Nothing more to see here folks! Move along.

If that sign went missing…we probably wouldn’t be reading about it. If we were I wouldn’t be happy about it. But I bet the athiests would. You see, we believe in live and let live. IF athiests hate God so much they can either live and let live OR go to another country where there is no God OR they believe in Islam or Buddah…you have a choice BUT what makes you think because u hate God so much you can erase Him from our memory and our country?? He has been around much longer than u.
1 Corinthians 2:14 tells us that, ” … the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

Your best bet is to quit asking people and to open a Bible (authorized version KJV 1611) and pray for understanding. Some of us on here are about to wipe the dust off our feet and go on. We are not here to argue over what you should already know. Seek and you will find. **** and the door will be open to you. If you have questions, ask, and someone may take the time to answer if you are really seeking, but to argue with that is fruitless and time consuming.

@ LVL12- Tell ya what, Live, Love, whatever your name is, Liberalchick 12….. Um, if the Christians signs are stolen, no biggie, we have more. You guys deficate and destroy a Bible, we don’t issue fatwas or curse you dead. We get another from Lifeway Christian Books or Thomas Nelson. I do notice you guys are too chicken to jack with the ******* or Satanists. Come on, be equal opportunity in your disdain for faith & religion, or just admit you’re a bunch of anti-Christian little haters who need to shut the crud up and move back to Russia where you belong.

Waaaa! Waaa! Someone stole our sign. Well, gee, some of your ilk dynamited, shot down with tanks/artillery, and bulldozed how many churches in Russia from 1917-1992? Churches get rebuilt, sweetie. And the faithful, they just go underground. Know this, God will outlast your kind.

Stalin, dead. Bakhunin, dead. Molotov, dead. Jesus, NOT dead.

      Sucks to be you!

That is Gods right …would you like the one that speaks to us to NOT gloat over the fall of our enemy?
