Atheists Up in Arms Over NJ Town‘s ’Keep Christ in Christmas’ Sign

The nation’s War on Christmas controversy has reached Pitman, New Jersey, where atheists are railing against a Knights of Columbus banner that is hanging over a street in the middle of the town. The message, which reads, “Keep Christ in Christmas,” has non-believers frustrated, claiming that its presence may be a Constitutional violation.

A picture of the banner, as captured by CBS News

“Unnamed residents” who live in the borough reportedly contacted the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the well-known atheist group based in Wisconsin, to defend them against the sign’s presence (the FFRF frequently claims that “unnamed” sources are behind their threats). The group has asked the town to remove the sign.

Andrew Seidel, the FFRF’s constitutional consultant, believes that the banner should not be hanging over the town’s Main Street. “It’s a group endorsing religion over a public right of way,” he said.

The town’s mayor, Michael Batten, though, doesn’t agree. “I think it’s a sad state of affairs that our country, we kowtow to the minority and not the majority of people who like that sort of thing to stay,” he said. Batten claims that the sign is attached to private property and that it merely hangs over a county road.

According to CBS Philly, some residents have already seen a Christmas display be removed because of its presence on government property. But because this banner is on private land, the case against its presence is more difficult for non-believers to prove.

While the town doesn’t seem likely to remove the sign, the FFRF has another idea up its sleeves. If it can’t beat Pitman, it will join the town by posting its own sign. According to Seidel, it will read:

“At this season of the Winter Solstice, may reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”

According to one resident, the Knights of Columbus’ sign has been hung during the Christmas season for the past 45 years.

Actually, our Natural Rights come from God. If they don’t believe in God, then they should be accorded NO Natural Rights.

They are trying to brainwash kids so they can deny their Natural Rights (since they are trying to erase God). Oh, the Marxists already deny Natural Rights come from God by their pro-sodomy law in the military which deny teleological design (laws of nature and Nature’s God). Their ideas are incompatible with our Constitution and we need to clean up the sewage and lies that are incompatible with our Legal System, where there is Supra Positive Law: A Standard of Right and Wrong–not from Barney Frank’s standards book–GOD’s. Unlike the atheist Russian and Chinese laws–Might Makes Right, our country embraces GOD. GOD should be ALL OVER the TOWNS–because He is where our Natural Rights come from stated in the US Constitution.

Get rid of God and you destroy the Constitutional Rights and meaning of inalienable rights. We will not have Rule of Law but arbitrary laws forcing arbitrary irrational morality on our children. Wicca comes to mind–should be banned, since it denies God and therefore, Natural Rights.

I disagree with you; as an atheist, I do not take offesense to this sign. Christmas, Christ’s Mass, a formerly catholic, now all-encompassing christian holiday is celebrating the birth of CHRIST. Keep Christ in his holiday? sounds like a good idea to me. You can still respect theists and christians. You have a right to your Christian beliefs and I do not want to diminish that. However, this country, the United States of America was founded on the idea that we can be free to belief -or disbelieve- in any religion. What should we do after kicking out all the athiests? Get rid of the muslims and jews? What about those pesky mormons? Respect others and the beliefs (or lack thereof). Jesus taught us to LOVE our neighbor, not kick them out because they do not believe in our particular deity. “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone [on those evil atheists!!1111!!!]“

Agreed… please read the separation clause AGAIN. And AGAIN…. and maybe even a 3rd and/or 4th time, since PEOPLE ARE MORONS over this statement. Please read Thomas Jefferson’s remarks in reference to the 1st amendment, to another statesman, when the statesman brought up the fear that people can’t worship how they chose…. READ IT!.

      This is a scam
The FFRF is probably one sad pathetic husband and wife with a computer and a fax machine. All they have done is send a letter threatening these small towns. One of them showed up on a Fox news show. Now they are waiting for the Atheist nut job money to flow into their crappy web site.
Its the same with the Center for Science in the Public Interest. They started as a husband and wife with a fax machine and I am sure they now rake in millions.
Same with the “God Hates ****” Baptist church. One family of lawyers making money by suing small towns that in the tiniest way interfere with their obscene protests of soldier funerals.
Here is the scam; Lets be as offensive as possible and then conduct a law suit against the small communities.
FOLLOW THE MONEY. I bet most of these communities are in an ultra liberal judges district.
These people may or may not be true zealots. I think they love it when we piss and moan because they have found a way to make it pay off for themselves$$$

I had to create an account just so I could reply to JADED12′s comment, I don’t think I have ever read anything this inspiring in a comments section of a controversial news story in my life. The answer is peace and acceptance. Neither religious nor non-religious people want to spread hate, we have so much in common but instead of looking past petty signs and posters and sometimes–frankly just garbage–we fight and bicker. We don’t need a belief system to love and respect each other, regardless of which one it is. Please, not just during Christmas, but for the rest of your lives, spread the word of acceptance. We can live together in peace.

      @Jaded:

Jesus may have told us to love our neighbors… he said nothing in regards to loving their behavior, or their beliefs. What he said exactly, was, ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself’. Which these atheists aren’t following, otherwise they’d be (shocker!) closer to Christian principles than they’d care to be. Which brings us to the cliche: ‘Love the sinner, hate the sin’ which is perfectly acceptable by biblical standards. Love is something that originated with God, and has been twisted and warped, (much like God) to fit in with one’s lifestyle as one sees fit, with no real respect towards God. Well, in case you haven’t heard, God may be loving, but he also respects no-one. In my opinion, most people I see that exhibit bad behavior are demonically possessed/oppressed. I don‘t hate people that don’t feel the same as I do.. I pity them, feel sorrow, and pray that God, someday, may save their souls. God says to weep for the lost… All you atheists that have posted here have made my prayer list tonight. I will pray for you.

Such an innocuous statement… yet I’ve never seen a statement inflame more non-believers to an almost sputtering rage. Why is that, I wonder?

I am so glad we are fighting back against the Godless pagans to keep the pagan in christsmass.

It’s odd to me that you xians have an example of Messiah observing the tradition of Hannukah in the book of “John”; yet you refuse to fight to preserve that. Instead you have a pagan holiday that is from Rome, with no commandment to keep it and no example of observation.

Historically and in Scripture(Revelation), the only reason you have to keep xmas is because the Romans sought to save their empire from fracture by mixing paganism and “jesus”- believing Jews(you white-wash them with the term christian).

It is really odd because you preach tithing. You have no commandment to tithe(only farmers did), yet you do this by the example of Avraham. Which is great. I think you should stay consistent (eh Beck?). If Hannukah was good enough for your Messiah, shouldn’t it be good enough for you? I mean especially since He forbids taking a pagan holiday and turning it to worship Him(Deut 12:28-32).

There is and never was Messiah(Christ) in christmas. Only anti-christ in christmas.

I agree with those who are refusing to be sucked into the hype and are refusing to paint all atheists with the same broad brush. The common sense atheists just might get fed up enough with those fringe lunatic [or is it lunatic fringe] atheists, who are giving them a bad name, and throw a net over them.

      @ Jaded12
I too was raised a Catholic, went to Catholic schools, was a “good” Catholic. However, I am NO Longer a Catholic. I Am A Christian! The Catholic church mis-represents Jesus to a gross degree. The pope is NOT Jesus’ representative on earth, etc. There are Christians within the Catholic church [I was one]. However, the more those Catholic-Christians read the Bible, the more they will understand how Catholicism runs against everything Jesus is. And — the day will come when they will walk out of the Catholic church and never look back.

All of this to say, Jaded12 — Jesus Isn’t A Catholic! Get To Know Jesus and Who He Is and What Who Jesus Is Means To Each and Every One Of Us. A great place to start is to get a Bible and begin reading at the Gospel of John.

God Bless You, Jaded12, and May He Lead You Into His Truth! In Jesus’ Name! Merry Christmas!

      8. And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, {This happened in 70 A.D. when the Roman General Titus destroyed Jerusalem and burned the Jewish Temple.} and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, {This happened in 691 A.D. when the Dome of the Rock, a Muslim shrine, was built on the Temple Mount.} there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. {The wise know that these “days” are years. So, 691 + 1,290 = 1981. What happened here on Earth in 1981? Not much that I know of. But my guess is that this is when Satan was cast out of Heaven. {Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! For the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. Revelation 12:12}
      9. Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. {Ok, 691 + 1,335 = 2026. No one knows the day or the hour, but, it looks, to me, that this is the year of the Second Coming, when Jesus returns, not as the Lamb of God, but, as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. “Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. Psalms 2:9.}
      10. But go thou way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

As a member of the Knights of Columbus I am proud of the Mayor and my brother Knights. Chistmas has become to commercialized and this program is an attempt to remind us of the real reason for the season. Too many people use Xmas instead of CHRISTmas which reminds us of the miracle of the birth of our Savior. As U.S. citizens we have been guaranteed the freedom of religion so if someone chooses not to believe that’s their right but it is not their right to keep us from expressing our religious beliefs

The Freedom From Religion Foundation is a group of four people with a following of some 13 – 16,000 Nationally. They bring in around half a million dollars from dues and T-shirt sales. I suspect that they are looking for that one big law suit score so they can take their circus to a higher national level. Lets all face it, in these times of OWS and the Obama, being a professionally offended left wing organizer is a big money maker. Could the Christian legal groups please stop defending us from this tiny minority and instead go on the offensive. As a Christian I would love to join a defamation law suit against these tyrants. Yes they have a right to spew their hatred, but they can and should be held accountable by a decent society.

Here in America, everyone does have the right to believe in whatever they choose, but that does not negate the fact that there is a GOD and Christ did come to this earth as a baby. People may not want to admit it now, but one day EVERY KNEE shall bow to the one and only TRUE GOD. We will have to give an account for everything we have done here on this earth. God will be our judge. I believe the sign in New Jersey should stay, just for the reason-the people there have the right to free speech. And, Christmas is a holiday celebrating Christ’s birth. If it were not for Christ’s birth we would have NO CHRISTMAS! If you don’t want to celebrate, then don’t. But don’t stop us who do want to celebrate! Merry Christmas!!!! All Atheist read this. It’s the first amendment

    Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

How is a Town hanging up a banner equivalent to Congress passing a law?
I don’t see the part that reads “No government official on any level be it federal state or local shall ever give the impression that something may somehow be construed as endorsement of a particular religion”
I’m having trouble finding that part in the constitution. Can you Atheists point it out for me?
I can’t seem to find “Every citizen has the inalienable right to never be offended” either.
In fact I’m pretty sure the first amendment gives you (and me) the right to freedom of speechwhich pretty much guarantees someone is going to be offended.
A town prohibiting religious displays on publicly owned property. I thing that may well fall under “prohibiting the free exercise thereof” clause. As in “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” Even that is questionable because it does not constitute an act of Congress.
There is no law establishing a particular religion, and also there is no law PROHIBITING free practice thereof.
Public property is owned by the public, including Chris

Christians. If a Christian group wants to place a display on publicly owned property (Christians being part of the public as a whole and therefore part owner of said property) isn’t that “the free exercise thereof”?

There are ALOT of people who misinterperate the first amendment, of every belief. I personally do not believe in the Christian idealogy, but respect it greatly and think ALL religion is a wonderful thing (this is to exclude extremists which exist in just about ALL religions). The Government has no place to determine what can/should be posted/hung up. If someone doesnt like the way something looks they should not look at it and move on. I try my hardest ( and am not always successful, but no one on this planet is perfect) to respect all people, if not to at least give people the benifit of the doubt, but these people need to learn that life is not fair, life is not easy, and just because you dont like something doesnt mean you can whine it away. The government owes nothing to them (or any of us) except what it promises us in the Constitution, and I am very sad to tell them this, but Hurt Feelings are not protected in the Constitution.

Before I got saved, that’s all Christmas ever was to me: A time to get together with family, enjoy the time with each other, relive old memories and sing carols on Christmas Eve. I never looked upon the celebrations with a feeling of getting Christianity shoved down my throat.

Now that I’m saved, I see it’s even more blasphemous to set up nativity scenes (idols) and to showcase Santa (Satan) Clause as the main character. Even though I understand it‘s to celebrate the birth of Christ despite the fact that Christ wasn’t born anywhere near this time of year, Tammuz was, I still look on it as a time to spend with my family, if nothing else.

That is an excellent point “Teahugger” – but I was searching for a “reply” option for “Jade12” and yours was available (is something wrong with my view here?) Jade12‘s views are so skewed that I’m unable to understand just what he’s up to. I seriously doubt that he has seen any indication that Christians have intended the removal of ANY of the groups that he mentions! The one truly unique thing about Christianity is that Christians are admonished to “love one another” (this includes tolerance) and I know a lot of Christians – but do not know even one who wants to “rid” us of athiests, or of any other of these kooky groups. Most true Christians simply want to see them turn from their wicked ways and accept Jesus for what he is – the Saviour of all humanity as they turn to him. Also, Jade12 quotes a little scripture there – wonder if he’s ever considered Romans 14:11 It is written: “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’” Hmmm – wonder what he’ll do when that time comes?

WE BELIEVE IN GOD ALMIGHTY MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH. If you don’t want to believe in either AMERICA or GOD, you are more than welcomed to leaved forthwith, that means NOW!

This IS OUR COUNTRY. We WILL DEFEND both it and our GOD.

You are invited to leave now if you neither love nor serve our GOD. You are also welcomed to leave if you are here illegally. If you want to be an AMERICAN, then you are welcome here. All others are asked to leave. There are many countries in the world who do not love, do not serve, do not acknowledge GOD, HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON JESUS CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT.

    Your choice.

Stay and be one of us, a REAL GOD-LOVING, GOD-FEARING AMERICAN

      You inspired me..

It was the night before Christmas and all through the land,
not a Christian was praying or taking a stand.
The slow assault….On changing this season , replacing Christ birth ,
was the number one reason ….. Replacing charity and love…
Was on the list too …
But the replacing of Christ , was the first one to go…
Without the foundation of love , love can’t exist……
So charities lost from the faithless hearts lips.
They now donate for kickbacks and dark-backroom-favors,
for right-offs and pay-offs that looks real good on-paper .
Their souls are empty their deeds are hollow …
They sold out the season ,for the one that they follow….
BUT.. our eyes are now open and the faithful do see…
That with your attacks on our lord….You are attacking me .
We are standing United and We Are Standing Firm ,
we see what your doing and we will not conform .

We are drawing a line …..throughout the whole land .

That Our Savior was born…. in Bethlehem ….!

Kickagrandma, I understand your stance, but you must make leeway for those who may not believe in God, but hold no ill will against those that do. We are fighting atheist who want to take our rights away to please themselves. Yeah, I know selfish on their part, but you must remember they are lost souls without a purpose and are desperately trying to find it.

I don’t care if you are an atheist, but I will pray that one day you can see having faith in something you can’t see, is the greatest feeling. God helps you through the dark times as well as the good times. He is with you when you think no one else is. Like any father, he is disappointed and he still loves you.

If you don’t try to infringe on my rights, I won’t infringe on yours. You don’t believe in God, so why are you wasting money and time on fighting something you don’t believe in? I just does not make sense. I guess the Bible is correct when it speaks about fools.

The religion of atheism once again shows how they have such a hatred of people with faith. They have such an intolerance of other peoples beliefs and cultures. Not only that, they are so willing to perpetuate the lies about our constitution and founding fathers.

I know people who just do not believe in God, and they do not have this hatred that these freedom from religion people have. I honestly believe that the reason for their fear is that inside they have a genuine belief in God, and fear what is going to happen to them. Its the only explanation for this type of behavior.

Ah, but it is…. Atheism functions on the belief that there is no God. You believe there is no God, therefore your faith in yourself is overweening in its’ pride. If I may make a presumption, I’m sure there are several times a day where you have to tell yourself there is no God… that sounds a bit like ‘praying’ to me.

Religion requires the worship or adulation of some kind of diety Kadams. Atheism is the exact opposite of that. We do not “worship nothing” as though we hold “nothing” dear. We just believe there is no great creator, and prefer to rely on scientific discovery to learn about our origins. Your assumption that we have to constantly tell ourselves there is no god is laughable, as our thoughts are typically on everything EXCEPT that. Whats that quote about assuming? making an ass of you and me? Just you in this case

Enough with your high-and-mighty atheist views, Rainman… I understand that people who feel strongly in their faith can sometimes get annoying… but they obviously weren’t taught the part in the Bible that warns Christians not to throw pearls to swine, and when Paul told the disciples to go preach to the lost sheep of Israel, that if there were any that did/would not hear them, they were to leave town and shake the dust off. First I would like to say, that Congress did not put this sign up. If Congress put the sign up and endorsed it THEN that would a violation of the first amendment. Secondly, don’t put words in my mouth, I never said a thing about Muslims putting up a sign of their own…nor would i have a problem with it, just as the atheists have displayed signs on billboards, I simply don’t look. Wait so do atheists want to take the Christ out of Christmas? Why do they even care? I’m Jewish, have never celebrated Christmas, and I have no problem with the sign. In fact, being an outside observer, I personally find it very confusing what a fat man in a red suit riding around in a flying sleigh pulled by reindeer has to do with the actual holiday. In contrast, on Passover Jews actually read about the exodus from Egypt as part of the festive meal BEFORE the main course is served.

      HIstorically speaking, the fat dude was for you – well, Jews. It was the secular American answer for everybody to take off and enjoy the holiday. People where taking the day off anyway, so it was made a federal holiday. So, trees, wreaths, garland and gifts where just added so everyone could get together for a mid-winter celebration. Where I came from, Jews celebrated Christmas EXACTLY like we did – with the tree and gifts. They just got an extra holiday and got fancy notebooks, pens and that odd little top they’d bring to school. It didn’t work very well…..;^}

The wreaths and garlands are leftovers from when the Christians were trying to convert pagans over to Christianity. Even the date is leftover from that as it is close to the Winter Solstice which is a day of celebration for pagans. I’m pretty sure that the modern depiction of Santa Claus is also taken from the pagans, but I am not completely certain of this.

Actually, you have it backwards… Constantine, back in the day, to get the Christians to come around to his way of thinking, declared that everyone should worship on the same day- Sunday. It was enough, at that time, for Christians that they weren’t slaughtered, and were instead given a day to worship, even though it wasn’t the day commanded by God (Saturday) to be the sabbath. Christmas is nothing more than an amalgamation of pagan/druidic beliefs, that somehow got meshed with the birth of Christ to make it more palatable for real Christians. The real event that’s being celebrated here is the birth of Tammuz, or paganism‘s ’sun-god’… Same thing with Easter, only it‘s not Christ’s death and resurrection that’s being commemorated, despite what everyone believes, it’s the death of Tammuz. The Bible references the 40 (lent) days that the women of the temple wept for Tammuz.

Fat man in red suit has NOTHING to do with the birth of Yahshua. Who as Messiah fullfilled the spring feasts of the Lord when he was born on Feast of Tabernacles (Sept) having struck a tent in human flesh, he was the Passover lamb slain before the foundation of the world, He fullfilled Passover completely and in His second coming he will fullfill the fall feasts of the Lord. And I find it a shame that the church has done so much to try an expunge from the Son of Yah his Jewishness and the fact he was a rabbi. I care about Christmas: 1. There is such a unrelenting attack on everything associatied with Christianity these days, putrid so called art that desecrates Christianity, attack by groups like these misguided pittiful fools (the bible says those that do not believe in the Almighty are fools), crass commercialism, this politically correct bs of “holiday” tree, etc – so I am encouraged when I hear CHRIST mas, 2 Even though Yahshua was not born on December 25th (instead every pagan god was, mithra, Tamuz, etc), it would make perfect sense that he was begotten on Dec 25th for the Word says he came “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” Col 2 v14-16 – The timing of the Almighty is impecable and his being conceived on Dec. 25th makes elegant sense.

It’s a statement of belief by a group of believers. It is not unconstitutional because they are not part of the government and are not trying to establishing a state religion. These people who love to quote the constitution should take the time to read it. Don’t these same atheists have signs up all over the place? No one is calling them to take them down. Just learn to deal with the fact that public expressions of belief are withing the limits of the constitution. How about practicing some of that tolerance we hear so much about?

      AGAME……
As some one who has studied the Constitution, I completely agree with your point.
People need to get a pocket Constitution from the Heritage Foundation, or go to a local TP meeting. They always have them for free.

I didn’t even have to study the Constitution, let alone the first amendment to understand what it meant…. I just read it. Oh that’s right, vocabulary and comprehension as gone WAY down in Amerika.

better yet, go to the atheist sign, tie them to it, and back up a farmer’s hogfarm manure spreader to it…. hey, it’s a lot cheaper and a little less lethal than tar and feathering those vile atheists.

obama has enabled and encouraged them to destroy the classic traditional national American Christmas .

      @Burnthills

Actually Christmas is NOT an American tradition. The Puritans who founded America banned the holiday because of the pagan/Roman Catholic roots it has. The holiday was later legalized again when the Puritans lost power.

How are we hateful? And what makes you think those “hateful” people are really Christians? You know anyone can sign-up and post here. Just because someone says they are Christian or Conservative, does not mean they are.

After being on this site you learn who are the good guys are versus the plants from the Huffington Post, Move-Along.lrg, and Media Blathers.

Please enlighten me as to how my ‘theism’ is harmful to me? I’m 39, and I got saved 3 years ago, having full cognizance of all my faculties. In the 3 years since, I am absolutely amazed at the way people are so BLIND. It’s all so logical now, much more so than when I thought all was logical before I got saved…

And… it’s only harmful, when we have to deal with people of the same faith as you, spitting on Christian religious observances. Why don’t you and your FFRF go protest some synagogue, and yell at towns who display menorahs.
