ATLANTA (AP) — A 30-year-old woman died on her birthday and another woman was seriously injured when they plunged from a 10th-story hotel window at a hotel early Saturday morning, investigators said.
Witnesses told police that 30-year-old Lashawna Threatt and second woman were “play wrestling” in a room at the W Midtown Hotel around 3:15 a.m. when they crashed into a window and fell four or five stories onto a slanted glass ceiling above a sunroom.
“They were play wrestling and the next thing you know, they went toward the window and through the window and out they went,” said Lt. Paul Guerrucci, commander of the Atlanta Police Department’s homicide unit.

Rescuers found Threatt dead on the sunroom roof. The second woman, whom police would not identify, tumbled off that same roof and fell onto an outdoor patio outside the hotel. She was taken to Grady Hospital with multiple broken bones and other injuries and listed in critical condition.
“According to the witnesses, there was no arguing during the hours leading up to this, either, so it’s really a tragic accident,” Guerrucci said.
None of the handful of people in the hotel room have been charged with any crimes. Guerrucci would not comment on whether alcohol could have played a role in the accident. Authorities were waiting on blood tests taken from the victim.
Hotel manager Michael O’Donohue referred all questions about the death back to police, citing the ongoing investigation. The hotel remained open Saturday.
“The incident at the W Atlanta early Saturday is very tragic and our thoughts and prayers are with the woman who was injured and the family and friends of the woman who died in the fall,” he said in a statement.

Witnesses told cops the petite women were merely horsing around before they fell out of the window about 3:15 a.m.
“According to the witnesses, there was no arguing during the hours leading up to this, either, so it’s really a tragic accident,” Guerrucci said.
Threatt, who appeared at liquor promotions and in print ads, leaves behind a 15-year-old daughter.
“She was extremely charismatic. She could talk to anyone,” said her pal, Jomarys Castillo.

Posted on May 29, 2011 at 12:57amI want to know why these hotel windows are so thin, that two young women who happened to bounce against them causing the window to collapse and shatter, effecting in the death of one and multiple injuries to the other.
I can’t believe a hotel window could break so easily!

Posted on May 29, 2011 at 12:54amAlot of thoughts here as people lose their loved ones. It would be better in my opinion to have a more meaningful death than to fall out a window while playing. Still there is alot of pain in loss out there for all those who have died. Go to the cemetary and remember the fallen. Show others you can care.

Sorry, folks, but if I sound crass and uncaring, then it’s because I am. Too many heroes have died or have been seriously injured so that dumb bimbos like this woman can screw around in the middle of the night and kill themselves when they should be sleeping and getting ready for another day’s work.

Posted on May 29, 2011 at 7:15amThat’s what I read into this. My husband and I were at a wild party, good music and crazy dancing and a few people were getting hammered drunk. It was hot and we were sitting by the open windows. A very drunk woman came staggering by, totally lost her balance and reeled out of control toward the open window and would have gone out and fallen three stories if my husband hadn’t jumped up and caught her.

Key word: Volunteers. Some of the ‘we’ you speak of did their time too and moved up in the ranks to become leaders, trainers, guides to the new volunteers that understand ‘some people out there want to kill Americans’ and also understand freedom is not free. The other ‘we’ are right there fighting the good fight (personally know them) for you my friend to make shallow comments in hopes of turning away those that know they are doing something bold and brave–volunteering for their country. What are you doing for your country?

Thank you so much for your first post with the list of American patriots that gave their lives in service to our country over the last week. The list broke my heart for their families. Here we sit in our comfortable homes reading a sad story about a self-indulgent person (I’m sorry for her family having to explain how she died in years to come). I’m ashamed of myself for opening the story, but am greatful to your for your post as a reminder of all the men and women who have sacrificed for our country from its origins.
This is an odd place to post a thank you, but THANK YOU to all who are serving and have served our country. We can never thank you enough!

Posted on May 29, 2011 at 12:14amThis happened in my home town. Trust me – she was drinking. Trust me – her family will try to sue the hotel for not having railings and windows strong enough to handle two women “play” wrestling. Trust me – we here in the ATL will soon see her family on TV showing the distress of the 15 year old. We will hear how it was everyone’s fault but the people involved. The injured person is in a great trauma hospital. I pray that she will be alright. I pray for the 15 year old girl who no longer has her mom. It’s too sad, too tragic. Trust me – more stupid will happen tonight in Atlanta.

so what if it’s risky. play is important on too many levels to get into here. could fill up volumes. banning play is not the answer. the answer is instilling responsible though and action to accompany play.

Posted on May 29, 2011 at 11:50amExcellent points from TheBarbarian… sometimes bad things do happen to good people… drunk people, old people, young people, black people, white people, males, females, people who were just horsing around. Life is sometimes that simple and unforgiving. Regardless, events like this tend to bring out the trolls of all stripes:
1) She was black, so a post may have a knee jerk negative tone. You can deny it or dance around it all you want, but some on The Blaze are VERY tuned in to skin tone.
2) She was up doing ANYTHING at an hour of which you don’t approve. She also has a child. The “logical” conclusion is she was trash and got what she deserved.
3) It was at a hotel, involved another human being, someone died, another person was grievously injured and the police where called. Clearly the next leap in logic is that EVERYONE involved is lying and that foul play is afoot. People are watching way too much TV….
4) SOMEONE must pay: The hotel, the glass manufacturer, the person who held the party… someone’s gotta bleed some money to satisfy the litigious and opportunist appetites of the rubber neckers. That means you too can win the lawsuit lottery!
5) Let’s ban hotels… or models… or 3 a.m…. or drinking… if we find the proper thing to get rid of, our collective well-being and sanity is assured. This is the worst and most naive of the trolls in question.
A young person died a shockingly stupid death. Life is often like that. R.I.P.

Posted on May 29, 2011 at 1:26amI travel more than most people, one thing that I’m always amazed about, especially in countries in central and south America, is the low priority that the architect’s put in safety of the guest in the construction of these hotels.
Some people do go to hotels just for that reason to get drunk and party, note to developers / architects, thicker glass and a rail in the middle of the window would help, opps cost, never mind.
I was at a hotel in Mexico the balcony “ wall ” was only a foot high, no joke.
At a nice hotel in Brasil, the balcony sliding glass door had no lock on it, so anyone can climb up the balcony into your room and rob you, I have heard of this happening in many countries.
Travel tip: The hotel staff do not care about your safety / security
