‘Atlas Shrugged’ – Why Is MSM Silent On This Film’s Potential?

The low-budget film ‘Atlas Shrugged’ opened last Friday in 299 theaters. And by industry standards, it should be viewed as a success.
The movie has a relatively unknown cast and was competing against films with considerable star-power and promotional budgets larger than the entire production budget for Atlas Shrugged, and yet this 102 minute, independent project was bringing in a higher per-screen average than almost every other movie in wide distribution.
As reported by Box Office Mojo, the #1 movie in per-screen dollars was the smash ‘Rio’, averaging an impressive $10,252 per screen. ‘Atlas Shrugged’ finished 14th in overall revenue, but managed to generate $5640 per screen, making it the second-highest in overall productivity. And after the weekend, the movie is still generating a healthy $450 per screen, the second highest, daily per screen averages.

While some professional movie reviewers have not exactly been kind to this film, fans who have rated it on Fandango.com overwhelmingly support it. In fact, there are over 1000 reviews posted by people who have seen the movie and almost 80% of them have awarded it a ‘must go’ rating. Clearly there is a positive buzz from those who have paid money to see this movie versus those who are paid for their reviews.
The Blaze covered the story of Hollywood’s reticence a month ago. And last week, Pajamas Media was at the premiere, offering some reviews and interviews with cast members.
So why isn‘t the movie industry doing what it normally does when an independent project manages to make it to the big screen and show the ability to generate what might be called ’competitive’ and promising revenue numbers? This is a commodity with a proven demand. You would think that a distributor would sense there is a potential profit to be be made, not only on this film, but the planned sequels.
Is the anti-big government message just too strong?

It could have been 4-hours and I’d watch it too. I hope they do really well, and can form a substitute for Hollywood, like Bollywood, which will redirect the Hollywood culture in our direction. I’ll support it. And I’ll watch Parts II and III when they come out. This should be required watching for seniors in high school everywhere, not the socialist crap our educators (?) foist on them.

My Husband and daughter have read the book about 20 times between the two of them where as I have only gone though it once so far. I have encouraged all those that I know to go see it, on both sides of the political landscape. The casting was well done with my favorite being Mr. Beckle who plays Ellis Wyatt, you could not have placed a better person to play that part. Posted on April 21, 2011 at 4:06pmNo, the audience that is liking it are flooding the web. This is not the average movie going audience, but a vocal, small minority that are voicing their misguided opinions. Also, a movie like RIO, has 28,000 votes, while the Turd bomb has only 7,000, smaller sample size throws off the numbers.

Numbers aside, I enjoy pure entertainment as much as the next person, but this is a far more cerebral movie about understanding human motivation, government excess and how the world really works than any liberal-slanted bubble-gum flick you are likely to gush about.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the acting and the production values of the film. For an independent production it surpasses whatever other Indie films I’ve seen. The dialogue followed Rand’s book word for word in many scenes. It is very true to the book. That would be the main reason the MSM isn’t happy. I can’t wait for Part II and Part III. The movie is a testament to how government is systematically “regulating” our free market system into oblivion and what happens when the regulations become oppressive. Posted on April 22, 2011 at 8:47amWhat did you mean when you said you could: “speak to the difficulty of being a conservative and working consistently” – did I misunderstand you in some offhand way?
Mike, I did look at your site before posting, and I think your studio arts skills are indisputable. I did not see any releases from the estates of George Harrison or Theodor Seuss Geisel for borrowing their trademark styles to mock an elected American President who currently calls for the lowest US tax rates in four decades. The Blaze prohibits self-promotion without permission and compensation. I did not see that either, but I assume you are simply “saving money” by publishing your personal ads, (as others do here).
I would definitely hire you for your talent. I might think twice if the position required originality, judgment, and professional ethics. In the entertainment industry, 96% of the work is done by talented artists who earn 20% of the money.
Like the objectivist heroes of “Atlas”, not everybody gets to be Andy Warhol or Brad Pitt. Some of us say it’s all due to conservative politics. Some say it’s talent and hard work, and agents.
Hey man, I got nothing but good wishes for you.

Posted on April 22, 2011 at 3:08pmWell, Hippo, let me try and make it clear for you. As a conservative, I have gained employment with companies who, unbeknownst to me, espoused a progressive ideology and business model. They also held very strong political beliefs, you can guess where they lie. Unlike Glenn Beck, a conservative who hires liberals based on talent, these individuals hire based on feeling and affirmative action, and deride those who don’t believe as they do. Like you.
As far as my shameless self promotion, to a degree you are correct. You and your ilk have had posts of mine removed from this site, which is your prerogative as a trolling liberal. The thing that you fail to grasp is, that I enjoy drawing far more than writing, though by no means am I incapable of the latter. Those drawings and cartoons that I post ARE my opinion. While you expectorate at length on a site with very few sympathetic listeners, I tend to post rarely, serving up my scathing assessment of our Socialist President and his brethren through comedy, art and class. As a graphic artist, I have been trained to make a visual impact with my pieces, using new ideas based on the lessons of the greats that came before us. The small sampling of my art that you have actually seen has been in that vein. If you saw any of my published comic book work, or read any of the three separate stories I have in production at the moment, you may not think as you do. Fortunately though, I have been given, through Divine Providence and the spirit of entrepreneurship, a mind capable of running a business on my own, for my own profits, so I don’t have to work for someone like you anymore.

Posted on April 22, 2011 at 4:08pmSleazyhippo, as a former co-worker of miketheartist, having worked with him in the entertainment industry, I can attest to the fact that he was indeed one of the artists doing 98% of the work and getting PAID only 20% of the money (though I believe all the artists EARNED a much larger share), and I know that because I was in management and had access to that data. I’m not sure what you were trying to imply.
I can also attest to the fact that people who “fit in” were given multiple opportunities to maintain employment by shifting jobs when they began to fail at one or another, and others were let go more often because they didn’t “fit in” than because they were untalented or unable to keep up with production. Those who didn’t “fit in” were those who espoused conservative values and spoke up about abusive working conditions, or, OMG, simply had opinions of there own.
Report Post »sleazyhippo
Posted on April 22, 2011 at 8:16pmMike, I really do wish you the best, I apologize for offending you and hope you forgive this, but I was not picking on you because of your politics. You are indeed an artist, and we deal with copyright infringement all the time. Someday you will have a distinctive style and I hope others will not rip you off – especially to mock conservative causes that you would not have supported. Enough said.
I do think you will be happier with your own business – all the true greats succeed by working from their own business, where you start chipping away at the 96/20 ratio.
Being the star of Stan Lee’s bullpen means you are just putting in hours for The Man! (Most true professionals could care less about politics and are deadline focused.) At the end of the day, they only want to exploit the best talent they can get their claws into. So you are very wise to do your own thing.
You have a great future, and seem to have a dream going! Be objective and prosper.

Posted on April 22, 2011 at 9:41pmHello, Phoenix42!
I thought Mike was doing a fine job explaining his position,but if you need to jump in, OK.
(About graphics artists being paid less than deserved, I simply meant to say, you guys are in a dog eat dog business, so expect very little from the management dogs. I respect the ‘paying dues’ aspects of your situation, though.)
I think you said that you were in a rational business that shunned a great employee and talent because he, “espoused conservative values and spoke up about abusive working conditions, or, OMG, simply had opinions of there (sic) own.”
Well, I am not saying that didn’t happen, but I am saying it would not happen on a really professional top notch project that is making big money and being fresh.
So if it did happen, maybe it was a just a bunch of liberal losers and you are both better off to not be part of their farce any more. Blessings always come to those who move on.
(Like Mike said about Glenn putting up with George), “When the rubber hits the road, genius prospers, and to heck with politics!” That’s my experience.
Referring back to Jack Kirby’s classic 1960’s Sergeant Rock DC comics, Easy Company has a character that represents every political and social background. United we stand!

Eventually, the mob loses focus and disperses. This may take some time but when people really listen to their conscience and inner common sense, they will come back to the middle. What would Blazers do if Obama won a second term?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We, like all the Progressives, would be slaves to the government. I thought we got rid of slavery 150 years ago. But nooooooooooooo! Progressives WANT to be enslaved. Conservatives would rather have freedom. It might cost us being rounded upo into FEMA camps, which is what I think they’re going to do, but I don’t have much longer to live anyway.
The movie is a ham fisted political statement, that is out of touch with current reality. Parts 2 and 3 are never going to be made, who but a Rand cultist is going to sit throuah a single speech that is so long it takes two movies to film.
Estimate about 35 ppl in the theater, which for a matinee in my town, is pretty good. I am trying to spread the word to my family & friends to see it and for them to enourage others to see it. This is another way to get the conservative message out to people who never watch Fox News or listen to talk radio.
Posted on April 21, 2011 at 7:06pmIn all honesty, it wasn’t a great movie, and it certainly wasn’t promoted well. It wasn’t terrible by any means, but I thought was somewhat flat, obviously low budget, and overall unengaging. It left out a LOT of the key insights from the book that really gave the book its true power. In other other words, it went through a lot of the same motions, but lacked the soul of the book. It felt like it would be better had they presented it on TV as a miniseries format instead of on the movie screen. I really wished it was better, because Atlas Shrugged deserves a really great adaptation.
Media coverage? What do you expect for a movie that finished 14th for the weekend? What, were you all awash in a media blitz for Limitless or Insidious or Soul Surfer? Me neither, and they all finished ahead of Shrugged. As of today, it’s somewhere south of Meet Monica Velour and No Eres Tu Soy Yo. (Yeah, I know.)
Posted on April 21, 2011 at 11:46pmBetterDays, your idea is impossible. Even a contortionist couldn‘t assume the configuration of body parts you’ve referred to. The human spine is not that flexible. And the size of the orifice you refer to would not admit an object of the size you refer to. Proctologists aren‘t trained in the surgery of that kind because it’s a physical impossibilty and never happens.
Okay, you didn’t mean it literally. I get that. Bathroom humor isn’t my thing, but I have to admit that your post is more clever that most of the insults that come my way. And a lot come my way. Thousand of insults come my way – no millions, maybe billions. For standing up to that, Ayn Rand would love me.
I stand here, like the Rock of Gibraltar while the waves of the lesser humans dash themselves impotently against my mighty bulk. I care not for the feelings or opinions of other, lesser humans. I reign supreme and give no thought to how my actions or words effect others.
As Rand herself said, “I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.”
I toocare nothing for other human beings, except as intruments to my aggrandizement, despite all that nonsence Christ said about helping your fellow human being. Rand was right, Christ was wrong, simple as that.
All you have empathy toward your fellow human beings are fools. Any among you choose to help the poor are week. The strong individual is must take his rightful role and dominate others. The week will not inherit the Earth.
Oh, sorry, I lost my train of thought channeling Rand. I haven’t watched the movie because it was universally panned. I‘ll watch it when it’s free on NetFlix. Promise.
Too bad about Atlas Shrugged, my (and everybody’s) favorite book at the age of sixteen! The motion picture version of Ayn Rand’s 1957 depiction of egotism, free love and free markets could have been a blockbuster bigger than Pirates of the Caribbean, but possibly would have benefited from more star power and cinematography.
While she was still alive, Ayn Rand disdained Christianity and actually wrote that she considered Ronald Reagan a weakling. In Objectivism, (the Atlas Shrugged philosophy), reason is everything and selfishness is the primary virtue. Religion is a fraud and extramarital promiscuity is openly encouraged. Altruism is a crime against human excellence and humanitarian self-sacrifice is the most contemptible weakness.
In High School, we all loved Ayn Rand and Hugh Hefner, who provided us self-centered fantasy lives we could really see our invincible selves implement! Growing up, we went to college or the military or to work in the fields. Years passed, Mom & Dad got old (and maybe sick), we experienced our first job, marriage, and childbirth; and eventually matured to the point where we realized that self-centered SOBs like Hef and Ayn are ‘few & far between’ for good reason! Their Atlantis-on-Earth society doesn’t work.
Not even for Donald Trump.
Posted on April 22, 2011 at 2:10pmThe postings on this site show that Ayn Rand was correct. The looters/trolls that post here are proof of it. You sad folks would not have a place to feel important or a place where your ignorant rants would be answered if not for the Blaze. You would have to find somewhere else to post your insights that the rest of the posters are racist or whatever code word that progressives use for those that do not agree with your global ideas. You would have no purpose in your miserable life if you could’nt post your snarky comments and would just slide back to the cesspool that you climbed out of. Oh while I am on a rant of my own the moron that believes he is Gibraltar, week is a period of seven days and weak is a state of being not strong. Notice your little spelling error? I feel so much more superior than you now that I have pointed it out. Except that is not how I judge a human by his spelling. I judge them by the actions and statements they make!
Posted on April 25, 2011 at 10:10amEarning less than $3.25 Million after ten days ($3.09 M on April 24), looks like Atlas Shrugged is headed for the DVD aisle — without recovering its low $10 Million budget. This is disturbing to some, who point out Atlas Shrugged is the #2 published America book (behind the bible), and more patriotic Americans know the exploits of spunky protagonist Dagny Taggert than those of feisty punditician Sarah Palin.
Report Post »Don’t look for Overseas Box Office receipts to make things even, because the socialist leaning Europeans, Africans, Asians, South Americans and Canadians, have proven time after time that they will not watch movies unless they are fun and enjoyable. (Australia, maybe not so much.) Besides, the free-loving Ayn Rand philosophy cultists and the anti-government Taxed Enough Already Party movement that took ownership of the movie weeks before it was even released are intrinsically American subcultures.
So we will soon be looking for the “Atlas Shrugged 4th of July Boxed Set” (1 movie DVD with 5 out-take DVDs and 12 blooper DVDs) for the low price of $117.76 (that’s One, Seventeen-Seventy-Six) to bail out the producer. We expect every real patriot to purchase as many sets as possible by canceling their Summer Vacations and applying the gasoline savings.
