AT&T Sends Message to Users: They Were Hacked

Yesterday, AT&T had to give its users the unfortunate message that its systems were infiltrated and users were potentially hacked.

Some AT&T Users Victims of Organized Hack

According to Bloomberg’s BusinessWeek, less than 1 percent of AT&T‘s customer’s were affected. BusinessWeek has more from AT&T:

“We recently detected an organized and systematic attempt to obtain information on a number of AT&T customer accounts, including yours,” AT&T said in an e-mail to customers. “We do not believe that the perpetrators of this attack obtained access to your online account or any of the information contained in that account.”

AT&T said the hacking attempt used so-called auto script technology to “determine whether AT&T telephone numbers were linked to online AT&T accounts,” company spokesman Mark Siegel wrote in an e-mail.

[...]

“No accounts were breached and our investigation is ongoing to determine the source or intent of the attempt to gather this information.”

BusinessWeek reports this hack has no connection to last year’s attempt by someone to obtain email addresses of iPad users through AT&T who managed the addresses.

As cyber attacks against private companies and the government increase, cyber security legislation is expected to come to the Senate sometime early next year, according to BusinessWeek. And, last week, we reported that the military is working out its role in responding to cyber attacks and threats, but has already stated it is prepared to used force in such an event, just as it would on threats on land, sea or air.

I use Magic-Jack for my home phone. Magic-Jack’s phone carrier is AT&T. I have kept the phone number on the no-call list. I am continually getting calls attempting, I think, to hack my voice-message or my computer which hosts the jack. I have tried to do reverse look-ups and get a suburb of LA, or Florida. Caller is always unknown. MJ’s tek help does not offer caller blocking, When I call the number back I get a recorded message of a Mexican(i-think)woman screaming as fast as she can talk, as if it is some type of advertisement. I have logged some 30 or more numbers on my incoming call list from these people. I found a website called 800-annoyances or something like that. Just google the number that called and you will find this website. I have had to change my debit/credit card numbers 4 times in the past year, as the bank has informed me that my card has been used making transactions in California, for less than $100. They have changed the phone numbers to access my account information over the phone, what next. I wonder if it will be of any use to get (Life-Lock) if my money isn’t worth anything…

The Feds and Congress obviously don’t care
Case in point, They are passing S.O.P.A (a bill so broad it will kill the web as we know it) with reading the damn thing!

Everyone knows that everyone in the 1% uses AT&T. This is obviously an OWS attack on the 1%!

This headline is extremely misleading – the email clearly states there was an ATTEMPT to hack a small subset of the accounts. The hack attempted to gain access to 1% of the accounts and from what’s stated above, the attempt failed.

Your headline is extremely misleading. The email clearly states there was an ATTEMPT to hack 1% of AT&T accounts and it was not successful in gaining access to any of the accounts.

I understand the technical challenge to Hack someone! But, why weaken the Internet… in a Self Destructive Mode… unless you are sponsored by those who want to Control the Internet by Law!
