Audio: VP Biden Praises Union Protestors Keeping GOP ‘Barbarians From the Gate’

During a conference call with thousands of activists Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden joined Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka in commending union protesters for standing up to Republicans across the country.
“You guys built the middle class,“ Biden said during the ”virtual town hall” conversation hosted by the AFL-CIO. “I would just emphasize what Hilda [Solis] said and say it slightly different: We don’t see the value of collective bargaining, we see the absolute positive necessity of collective bargaining.
“Let’s get something straight,” he continued. “The only people who have the capacity — organizational capacity and muscle — to keep, as they say, the barbarians from the gate, is organized labor. And make no mistake about it, the guys on the other team get it. They know if they cripple labor, the gate is open, man. The gate is wide open. And we know that too.”
Biden also recognized the union activists for being a driving force behind his own political career. “I’ve got to state the obvious,” he said. “There’s an old expression: ‘You go home with them that brung you to the dance.’ You guys all brought me to the dance 36 years ago in Delaware as a United States senator. You’ve been with me, and I’ve stayed with you.”
In a more impassioned plea, Biden criticized conservatives for their “orgy” of greed, which he claimed led to the recent economic downturn.
“I find this ridiculous,” he said. “The very philosophy, the very conservative people who got us in this ditch, who created — through their greed — this orgy of focusing on the super wealthy and Wall Street without regulations, the very people who drove us into this ditch, are now the people using you guys as the scapegoats. This is what you call blaming the victim. The people of the neighborhoods we all grew up in and you guys live in, organized labor, they’re the very people getting killed right now by this economy. And the audacity these guys that come along and say, ‘Hey, this is the fault of collective bargaining’ — that is malarkey.”
“I’m available, I’m here, I’m working with you, I wish I could be even more effective than we’ve been, but this is only the beginning of the fight,” he concluded.

Posted on March 17, 2011 at 11:05pmIt was a dark day for Henry Ford when FMC was forced to join the UAW. He was paying benefits and wages higher than ANY other automobile manufacturer but the openly communist UAW caused Ford to capitulate using brutal thugs which killed several workers shut down assembly lines using sabotage and had threatened to burn the facility to the ground.
Yes, there are numerous benefits the unions got for workers, vacations, 40 hour weeks, sick pay, reasonable concessions, but the power of the unions has corrupted the leadership as power always does. The unions should not be empowered to hold hostage their employer or the taxpayer.

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 8:23amyou are absolutely right about unions, my husband and myself are both retired from GM ( I mean Goverment Motors Now) yes, the company didn’t do things the way they should have, but I will tell you that the union hel[ped bring down GM, don’t know how many people out there know this but in 2006 our plant was shut down, we had a choice either do community service, go to college, get laid off (unemployment) or go sit in a warehouse that they call Job Banks the people that chose anything but unemployment got there 40 hr check every week. My husband and I went to college. We mostly took online classes so never had to leave our home. Our tuition was paid for by the company. Wow, what a deal huh? My husband took computer classes and in one of his classes there was a GM worker that had been in Job Banks for 9 years, he has 3 degrees. When GM offered the buy outs in 2007, my husband asked him if he was going to take it, he said no because he couldn’t find a job that would pay him as much. We both thought total abuse by the union. Luckily the job banks was defunded and ended soon after but the union fought and fought to keep it. Shortly after that BANKRUPCTY I wonder what would have happened to GM without the union having so much power. We still get calls from them to support the democratic party we tell the m hell no and hang up. The unions are out for themselves and that all there is to it. POWER

For nearly 3 yrs before 08 you could read the screaming between the lines because the $ was just toooooo high for toooooo long, it just had to break, they’d advise you to put your money in commodities, because they’d last when the $ broke. I think it may have been them who finally put out the list of 7 banks about to fail, that caused the run on them and became a “self-fulfilling-prophecy.

Posted on March 17, 2011 at 11:13pmIt’s more than that, from what I’ve read. The union campaign donations came from the pension funds, in amounts so large the unions risked being unable to cover existing retirees and a large number of members soon to be collecting. In sum, possible insolvency. Had Obow not bailed them out, the repercussions would have been enormous.

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 12:02am@NancyBee
Pretty much, from some of the things I have read. It seems a possible scenario, considering the amounts the unions donated to the Democrats as a Party and to individual candidates. Unless the unions somehow save a portion of members‘ dues to build a political ’war chest’, the only other place that kind of money could be sitting is in the pension funds. I used a search engine a short while ago, but didn’t save the site addresses.
A further backup, for me at least, is how the unions got a portion of the stocks in GM after Obow bailed out the company. Soon as GM became somewhat solvent, the union cashed in the stocks at about $33 a share. The government holds another portion of the stocks available, but in order for the Treasury to break even on the bailout, the stock has to rise to between $55 and $95 a share. And God knows how long that might take.
The unions got paid first in the while deal, instead of the taxpayers.

Posted on March 17, 2011 at 10:57pmThe problem is Keynesian economics an fiat money. When the money is constantly debased (inflated) there are always the ones at the bottom the keep getting the squeeze. Higher minimum wages, more perks for unions and higher pay is simply chasing created inflation and you will NEVER get ahead!. Inflation puts the squeeze on manufacturers and when inflation hits them and they’re STUCK with high paying union jobs, higher manufacturing costs, and higher costs to do business overall then loking overseas to solve the problem usually makes sense for a company to survive. Starting with the MONEY is where we should be and we wouldn’t have to worry about inflation. This country had near ZERO overall inflation for the first 150 years of our existence. In 1971 Nixon flipped the switch and left the gold and silver standard entirely. We have had boom and bust economies completely controlled by bankers since 1971. Look it up! Follow the money and in this case the MONEY is the problem. Lets fix that first by ending the FEDERAL RESERVE and return to the gold standard. We will then have to re-train our youth to be able to read an employee manual since these same progressives “dumbed down” the curriculums nationwide..Roll up your sleeves folks, this is going to be an interesting ride!

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 6:54amVennoye, Then you agree that the money is the problem. I do agree it was pressure from the international bankers that caused this mess in the first place. This issue predates the revolutionary war in it’s roots. How do we stop that? Starting with George Soros? Van Jones? I think you have to go to the top. We’re mid level at best with Soros.

‘Muscle’? What’s that supposed to mean, from a man who’s supposed to be VP of all Americans?
“…Biden also recognized the union activists for being a driving force behind his own political career. ‘I’ve got to state the obvious,’ he said. ‘There’s an old expression: ‘You go home with them that brung you to the dance.’ You guys all brought me to the dance 36 years ago in Delaware as a United States senator. Sounds to me like a slip about how the unions bought his votes for thirty-six years. Or is that too cynical?
The Dems are beholding to ‘big money’ and ‘rich fat cats’, too. Anyone who truly believes otherwise is no more than a partisan hack.
Unless Joe was blowing sunshine in their collective ear in a bid for more campaign contributions, it sounds to me like our esteemed(?) VP just gave unions tacit permission and his full support to do anything they want.
Woe to the Republic…

The riots will start, and while Obama is finishing his final days of his term, he will declare marshal law to stop the riots to “protect” America and her citizens. This will, in effect, make him the first American dictator. If any of you live in big metro cities you should start getting the heck out now. Us here in the “fly-over” states have seen this coming for years. Well, us in the rural areas, our “big” cities will be rioting as well. Some things are more important than the dollars shown on the paycheck. What was important to me was whether I enjoyed the work required of me to do a good job. Posted on March 17, 2011 at 11:03pmRobert, the vast difference in this administration and what it should be was graphically illustrated by Glenn Beck’s “Speech from the White House” this afternoon.
We have been rough-housed for so long that we have unfortunately become used to it.
This regime seems to have forgotten that they are our employees, not our masters. And, this stand by Biden is inexcusable.

Posted on March 17, 2011 at 11:18pmIs Biden living in a parallel universe? It wasn’t the unions that created the middle class….where did he get that from? There was a middle class long before there were unions. There have always been the wealthy, the poor and then those in the middle. That is just an economic reality and for Biden to give unions credit for carving out a middle class is absurd.
As for his being in debt to the unions…..at least Biden is being truthful on this point. Another way he could have stated this is “You don’t bite the hand that feeds you”.
No doubt at all that Biden’s love affair with unions is just payback. Unfortunately that makes him very suspect as VP to get involved at all in this argument. He has a vested interest in keeping the unions strong enough to continue supporting his own political career. Shall we say ‘conflict of interest’?

This Administration represents the most one-sided and divided agenda I have witnessed in my 64 years . . . . they promote goodies for one group (unions) over another, they promote racism and introduce it into every situation, and they totally disregard the wishes of the majority of Americans.
For those of you who do NOT think this is serious, guess again. Our country is in terrible trouble, and if Big O is re-elected, these people will be in charge – not just for the next two years but the next SIX years. Posted on March 18, 2011 at 1:14pmWell Mr. Biden since you like old sayings so much and in honor of Saint Patrick’s Day:
“Constant (liberal) company wears out its welcome.”
“As honest as a cat when the meat is out of reach.” — We can’t keep the meat (money) far enough out of your reach to keep you honest Mr. Vice President.
“Long churning makes bad butter.” — The churning is government spending and the bad butter is our deficit/debt.
“Don’t let your tongue cut your throat.” — You must have a lot of scars on your neck Mr. Vice President.
“A loud voice can make even the truth sound foolish.” — In Weiner and O‘Donnells case it’s the loudest voice drowns out the truth.
“Better an idle house than a bad tenant.” — We have an idle White House with a bad tenant.
“A little of anything isn’t worth a pin; but a wee bit of sense is worth a lot.” — You must not have any worth Mr. Vice President.
“A wise head keeps a shut mouth.” — Please head this advise Mr. Vice President.
“Be kind to those that meet you as you rise, you may pass them again as you fall.” — We republicans will remember the way you spoke of us Mr. Vice President.
“Don’t bid the devil good day till you meet him.” — Good day Mr. President and Vice President.
