Australian Stores Remove Golliwog Dolls to Avoid Offending Oprah

America’s talk show queen is shipping her production to the land of Oz, but controversy isn’t far behind.

Australian Stores Remove Golliwog Dolls to Avoid Offending Oprah

According to reports out of Australia, a doll shop in Melbourne has removed some Golliwog dolls from its display windows following a visit from Oprah’s reps.

The Dafel Dolls and Bears Shop is set to host a cocktail party for some of Oprah’s guests on Friday evening, but after a meeting with Oprah’s production crew, the store’s owner made the decision to pull the dolls from the display. Many are speculating the dolls may have offended Ms. Winfrey and/or her guests.

The Golliwogs were characters featured in children’s books in the late 19th century and are now depicted as various types of rag dolls. The only Golliwog doll to be removed from the storefront window display was “Mamee,” a washer woman.  The Herald-Sun reports:

Golliwogs are deeply offensive to Americans because of their perceived links to slavery and racism.

The store owner declined to comment because she had signed a confidentiality agreement with Harpo productions, but confirmed a meeting had taken place. …

Dafel’s has sold dolls and toys, including golliwogs, in the Block Arcade since 1945.

During Oprah’s trip to Australia — dubbed Winfrey’s ‘Ultimate Adventure’ — the talk show host plans to tape three shows.  Meanwhile, her 300-guest audience will get to enjoy eight days of site-seeing, surfing lessons and beachside barbecues.

History should not offend anyone. That‘s the way it was in the 1800’s. And there were some pretty sorry looking whties that settled the West, and they are part of our history. There were some Indians that were characters, also. They are all part of our history. Look where we have come and there are still some pretty funny human beings and some handsome ones. All history to be. We need to get over being offended and understand what is part of our history and be happy we have overcome a lot.

I hope Sinista Mace can do that. Up to now it seems he is a very bitter man and cannot let go of his prejudice against other colored brothers in the human race. When he views a rag doll with a black face, he reacts differently than when he views a rag doll with a white face. These are just dolls just like we all are just humans. Sinista is sinister for no reason. Most enlightened people appreciate the beauty in the variety of people, others view the differences as a bad thing. I think the doll is cute, he thinks it is ugly. Sad isn’t it?

Bearfoot, I don’t know what type of impression you got of me, but I haven’t expressed any hate towards any of my brethren of either color.

If you could provide an example, I would be happy to consider your assertion.

I don’t have to be a very bitter man to be an African American who is offended by an image of a doll in blackface.

You don’t know how I react when I view a doll with a whiteface.

The only thing close to a doll in whiteface I have observed is raggedy ann and andy, or a clown.

I’m not white, so I don’t know how to ascertain the level of offense that a white person might feel towards these images.

Then again, white people weren’t treated like the clowns that those images portray, therefor that premise may be invalid.

I think the doll is a misrepresentation and exaggeration of an african american in caricature designed to offend.

You may have a very different feeling towards the image of raggedy ann and andy or a clown in whiteface.

      That’s your prerogative.

      I have my own prerogative.

I don’t have the cookie jar, but my sister and I have the toaster cover, made for us by our mother.

I’ve made several dolls like the Golli for people that want them, and can’t get them. You used to see them a lot in old British movies, but now, you have to sew one yourself. It’s the favorite toy of a little boy who I made one for, and He can‘t figure out why he can’t take his best toy out in public.

It’s just a sock doll! I see white sock dolls all the time! and it’s not just the way this particular doll is dressed- around St. Patrick day, all we Irish see are dolls in green suits and knicker pants. Now really, do we dress this way? And yet, we aren’t crying in our beer.

You clown, the little midget in green sleeves is a LEPRECHAUN.

      A fictional character.

Not a parody of a real person or group of people.

Leprechauns aren’t a derogatory thing intended to offend Irishmen.

This stupid doll in blackface is.

And it has garnered the response it intended to garner.

      Offense.

Oprah has a sense of humor. I believe that she would purchase some of these dolls if she was allowed to see them. I think Oprah’s production crew made a mistake by urging the store remove the dolls. But it shows pure grace & class on the part of the store owner to remove the offensive dolls. I think they’re kind of cute & they remind me of some that I’ve seen on National Geographic. They have such a happy face!

@ All of the above replying to Sinista Mace

Why must we fall to a MediaMatters level of political discourse? We should WELCOME people like Sinista Mace, as long as the conversation remains civil. When we fight peacefully, it drives dissenters up the wall because they need our anger.

I don’t know much about Sinista Mace. If he’s insulted by these dolls, well, instead of railing at each other, why don’t we try to JUSTIFY our positions? Use fact instead of emotion.

A contemporary of Aristotle’s said something like, “A good character makes a better argument than words.” Show that we’re upstanding citizens, not “angry racist white Republicans”, like Mace calls us.

Would Glenn like the language on this site? The only way we can fight Progressive moral decay is to be peaceful, physically, mentally and spiritually.

Pickaninny (also picaninny or piccaninny) is a potentially offensive derogatory term in English which refers to children of black descent or a racial caricature thereof. It is a pidgin word form, which may be derived from the Portuguese pequenino[1] (an affectionate term derived from pequeno, “little”). The term has also been used in the past to describe aboriginal Australians, although it is now rarely used and is not viewed as offensive as in other countries [2].

Blackface is a style of theatrical makeup that originated in Europe, used to affect the countenance of an iconic, racist, American archetype, that of the darky or coon. The term blackface also refers to a genre of musical and comedic theatrical presentation in which blackface makeup is worn. White blackface performers in the past used burnt cork, then later greasepaint, to affect jet-black skin and exaggerated lips, often wearing woolly wigs and ragged clothes to complete the transformation.

No no no you don’t get it. It‘s not racist if it’s against the caucasian race. Because heaven knows the African Americans, Hispanics, Asians etc are all underpriviledged and we’ve hurt them dearly and need to repay and respect them all and let them spit on the white race as they please. *rolls eyes*

HAITI NEEDS SOME UPSTART INDUSTRY, THEY SHOULD BEGIN MAKING THESE CUTE LITTLE DOLLS.

A Gollywog key chain lucky charm would sell like hot cakes. I am working on a Gollywog board game that will be available for Kwanzaa.

……That is some straight up racist bs there.

I can’t believe people still even make stuff like this…

There has to be a wandering warphole floating around and transporting people back into the 1800s…..

Right now it’s centered over Australia but it will soon be coming to a strip club near you in Abbotsford…

I did not realize cloth dolls are so offensive. Personally, I thought it was kind of cute. Tell me Sinista Mace; why are people offended by a Raggedy Ann Doll? Is it because Raggedy Ann Dolls are reminiscent of traditional gender rolls?

I never thought about it but china dolls are probably not politically correct either. Barbie Dolls are pretty much sexist so that is a no no. I guess little girls will just have to get used to the lesbian Janet Napolitano action figure. They can pretend that she is strip searching Barbie at the airport.

Thats Funny. Shows how racist people are. The store owner thinks Oprah might identify with the Golliwag so she’s doing self-censorship like the stereotype is true and is afraid to admit it.

      THATS EVEN MORE OFFENSIVE!!

Did no one but me watch Glenn tonight? He wrote on his chalkboard, “December 9th, 2010 – The Revolution Begins”! The scenario he has foretold is now coming forth! He’s telling us to rise up and defend our Nation!!! The Government is on the move and is about to declare Marshall Law to enslave us all under some flimsy pretext. If we are a step behind, our Liberty is lost. Strike out now against the running dog agents of the government to protect the Freedom which is our due. Hit them fast and hit them hard before our country is lost to total tyranny!

Didn’t Oprah once get paid act in a movie, playing a character dressed like that?

She should buy them, sign them, and give the proceeds to charity.

ran by this story quite a few times…finally went on it to see why oprah would be offended…because its a black mamee doll…as one poster commented…didn’t she play quite a few roles depicting her as a black woman in highly charged racial times of some sort or another…I guess she‘s only offended when it’s not putting money directly in her pocket…why do so many woman like oprah…I have never found her talk show interesting…too much political leaning…but I do like her as an actress…

Uncle Sambo.. Love your post it’s SOOOOOOOO TRUE.. I think the doll is cute.. must be that blacks never washed clothes back in the 1800′s.. can’t figure it out.. what does it say about us if we like the syrup with the black lady on the bottle??? Think that MIGHT OFFEND Oprah too? should we take them all off the shelves??
