‘Avenue Jew,’ Brooklyn: Subway Sign Defaced in String of Anti-Semitic Hate Crimes

Welcome to Midwood, Brooklyn — a neighborhood with a strong Jewish influence and home to one of the nation’s largest communities of Holocaust survivors. Now, sadly, Midwood is also becoming known for suffering a recent string of vitriolic, anti-Semitic attacks and acts of vandalism. Most recently, a sign at the Avenue J subway station off East 16th Street was spray painted with the letters “e” and “w” to spell “Avenue Jew.”

According to MyFox New York, a subway rider saw the graffiti, photographed it, and contacted Assemblyman Dov Hikind’s office.

The subway sign incident occurred less than a week after arsons commemorated Kristallnacht — which refers toAnti Semitic Vandalism at Avenue J Subway Stop in Midwood Brooklyn a series of attacks in Nazi Germany and Austria where Jewish homes and businesses were ransacked and torched — by smashing and burning cars in the same neighborhood while vandals scrawled swastikas, “KKK” and other anti-Jewish slurs on sidewalks, benches and vans.

Kristallnacht, not coincidentally, means the “Night of Broken Glass.”

By 5 a.m. the next morning, three cars along Ocean Parkway were already burned.

“The burning of cars and vandalism of benches in Midwood this morning represents a truly hateful act of prejudice,” Public Advocate Bill de Blasio said.

Hikind, who lives near the scene of the hate crimes, told VIN News, “This incident is beyond anything of similar Anti-Semitic graffiti I have seen…this is an upgrade to a crime where you have vehicles burned.”

“Education and vigilance are our only weapons in fighting against this blatant hatred,” Hikind, a Brooklyn Democrat said in a statement. “We must send a message to those who perpetrate these vile acts that we will not tolerate their behavior. These cowards need to know that we will find them wherever they lurk, and when we do, we will prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.”

And while police removed the vandalized subway sign and are investigating the incident, they have not yet apprehended the perpetrators, nor do they seem to have any leads.

Given these were not isolated incidents, and given the fact that anti-Semitism has manifested itself on a near-regular basis by Occupiers across the bridge into Wall Street’s financial district, it is clear that hate-crimes against the Jewish people are on the rise — and no longer hidden in the shadows.

    I can only speak from my experience. I am married to a jewish man. Some of his family members chose liberalism over Judaism. These are the kind of people that would be down with the ows crowd, sit with the anti semitism and say they will protect me because I am one of them. They chose the idea of the progressive movement above all else. They believe this to their core. Sad to say they would probably help throw over Israel, if that is what the collective wanted. The divide in our family has become so deep, we don’t talk. Blood is thick but I truly believe liberalism is thicker.

      I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately, what the liberal Jewish people do not get is that history repeats itself. In WWII, the German Jews who helped the nazi’s thought they would be spared as well…until they went into the ovens.

      People could care less who you are or your politics when it all boils down. They care about what you are. In good times we have the luxury of being able to look beyont what we are. Not in bad times-where we are certainly headed.

      I never have understand the proclivity for the Jewish community to support the left, both in this country and in others. The Democratic party now is not the party of my father. I just do not get it. the ows people represent a violent over throw of this government and I thought that was illegal. When is this kind of action subject to arrest? If you violate the law and call it political action it then is above the law? We are in trouble as a nation, and people better wake up.

    Same things started happening in 1930 pre WWII Germany. Only they had a leader in Adolf Hitler, who stoked the flames and maybe even threw the first match against the Jews. Plus Hitler inherited a bad economy and presented himself to the people as the one who could bring Hope and Change. He is credited with writing the book on how to “never let a crisis go to waste”. Remember when Eric Holder uttered those words?

    What kind of leader do we have? Obama despises Israel. He studied in a Muslim school until he was 16 yrs old, while living in Indonesia with this step father and mother. Gee. Makes you think, doesn’t it?

    If we reelect Pres. Obama, will he send Jews to concentration camps too? I mean before Christians because he hate them too. And then will he just include all people who vote for the GOP? He seems to be dividing the country along those lines. Hmmmm….

    Makes you wonder.

    Near the end the guy being interviewed says he wants to make sure those who did it know “It hurts,”. I’m sure thats going to guilt them into stopping. They probably laughed hysterically at the t.v. and gave him the finger. I hate to say this but I wonder if the people living there are going to actually think that p.c. talk and threats of legal litigation is the cure to this. Never again? If they won’t truly stand up for themselves and understand what it really means, who has more responsibility? Locking arms and marching down the street circa 1960′s MLK Mississippi shows a depressing naivete.

    Boy, I am all about standing with Isreal. Christianity is NOT pacifistic. You don’t stand by and watch someone be hurt. If you do, that is a sin. As Christians we defend ourselves and our brothers and sisters, that includes every person on Earth. That being said, reading some comments on this same story on MyfoxNY, Jewish people were making the silliest comments about this, like, I’m a Jew and I thought that was funny. Then there is the fact that every Jewish person I know is way way way left wing and would definitely throw their lot in with OWS. I hate to say it, but it feels like they would stay in this camp until it is too late for them and then, oh my, how could you let these people do this to us? Well…I kinda tried to warn you AGAIN…….I just don’t get it.

      Please don’t stereotype… I personally know a Chabad rabbi who listens to Glenn Beck daily! You have to understand that Jews are extremely cautious with Christians. The Jewish people have been lied to, maimed, and killed in the name of Jesus for many years. Remember, whether Jewish, Christian, or Moslem…we are all individuals. Some of us are intelligent and think for ourselves and others are drones who let others do the thinking for them.
      Thank you Glenn and G.B. viewers for supporting Israel. You have no idea how much that is helping to heal a hugh wound for many Jews.

      I think that over the years the definition of stereotype has changed. Does it now mean think? Because every time I hear someone say not to stereotype they are really saying to stick your head up your a*^, you’re not allowed to notice that. Well I grow weary of that definition, you don’t stereotype and I will continue to think and make observations for myself, thank you.

      One more thing….Do you think that the slaughter of 6,000,000 Jews was the diabolical act of an INDIVIDUAL? Do you think that Mao Ze-Dong personally and as an individual slaughtered 78,000,000? Do you think that Jozef Stalin as an individual, personally slaughtered 23,000,000? At some point one may want to look at what groups of people are saying and doing and I mean this in general now.     Wow – I lived in Midwood for a few months as a Mormon missionary back in 2004. Not a huge fan of NYC by any means, but this surprises me. It is a very Jewish area with large groups of Muslim folks and also Hispanics, but other than being rather dirty, I never saw it as violent. We missionaries actually got mistaken for being Jewish quite often because of our conservative dress. That, and the bishop’s wife told me, “Well, your hair looks like a wig – I can see why they‘d think you’re Jewish.”

    Gee, thanks.

    The Hassidic Jewish folks in Midwood very rarely spoke with us (usually only if we were helping translate something to their Hispanic house help) and were quite closed off as a society, but it didn’t bother me. That is part of their religion and culture, and we lived side by side in mutual respect and quiet. I found my orthodox Jewish neighbors in Queens to be more friendly, but to each their own.

      Roy…you should recall our omnipotent, omnipresent, omnisceint Deity loves Israel… the semetic people (through Abraham) chose Him when the other Nations (yes, they were offered the choice) refused because they viewed the covenantal demands too restrictive and difficult. These semetic people were given the tablets of the covenant by God. Being omniscience, He knows the begining to the end. The Jews will remain His Chosen People whether they profess the parentage of Jesus or not (that was not a condition of the covenant). Read Numbes 23:19. Christians are more-or-less bound to God through the covenant God made with Noah after the flood. All faiths have something to offer the world. We should all praise God and work together to bring shalom to this world.

      Winevine….That‘s the point isn’t it? Another group is always the next target to antagonize until, as Glenn says, “the people will beg the government to make the violence stop”. And that’s when herds will REALLY begin to get thinned. We can see the trains are coming and we know what’s going to happen. In WWII, most Jews did NOT know, but I think we will.
