The Navy medic suspected of writing a bomb threat that forced a California high school evacuation Wednesday has surrendered to authorities, Master Sgt. Mark Oliva, a spokesman from Camp Pendleton confirms to Fox News.
Below is the earlier report:
San Clemente High School in Orange County California — home to some 3,200 students and 180 staff — was evacuated Wednesday after receiving a bomb threat that originated at nearby Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department was contacted by officials from Camp Pendleton where a written threat was found among the personal effects of AWOL navy medic, Daniel P. Morgan.
According to the sheriff’s department spokesman, Jim Amormino, ”His barracks was searched by military police.”
“… In his barracks they found a note that he placed explosives at San Clemente High School. The high school has been evacuated, 3,200 students, 180 staff have been evacuated. The entire school has been locked down, secured.”
Authorities are now searching for Morgan, who officially went AWOL Wednesday morning after not reporting in for work.
Morgan, a white male allegedly in his twenties, wears glasses and may be driving a white Jeep Wrangler according to reports.
Authorities are taking the threat seriously as they believe the suspect could have access to explosive devices.
It remains unknown, however, whether Morgan had any past experience with the high school.
“Until we’re able to complete a thorough search, the school district has requested that the parents stay away from the area until we get further information as to where they can pick up their children,” Amormino told ABC7.

Posted on September 8, 2011 at 11:07amWow, what a bunch of stupidity. The article author obviously is not a veteran and could not know the proper terminology. Secondly, there is a difference between a soldier serving in a hospital setting and a Combat Medic. I must figure that the Navy works the same way as in difference between a Hospital Corpsman and regular Corpsman. I do know the Corpsmen who go into battle zones have essentially the same job as an Army Combat Medic. Thirdly, My understanding is that UA is the current term for someone who isn’t where they should be. Unauthorized Absence more accurately describes the situation if someone is simply late, skips out for a few hours or whatever and it carries a lighter disciplinary action such as counseling statement, extra duty, possibly an Article 15 (Captains Mast if your Navy). Absent WithOut Leave indicates the soldier has been gone for more than 24 hours and punishment normally would begin with minimum of Article 15/Captains Mast and go up to a Court Marshall. Lastly, neither a Navy Corpsman nor an Army Combat Medic would be able to get anywhere near military explosives. If the guy managed to get some in the civilian market or make his own that’s one thing and would be a concern but the article and comments here seem to imply that this guy might have had access to military explosive ordnance and that is simply not possible. As a Combat Engineer a major facet of my work was explosives and I couldn’t get them without proper authorization.

Posted on September 8, 2011 at 8:33amIT says a Navy Medic! and I reckon if a lesbian college professor from Boulder Colo. could self diagnose herself as having PTSD because Colorado passed Amendment #2 (as she told a small group of “progressives” who came to Mesa College to hear her speak about how Amendment 32 affected the Gay Community just like Combat affects some in our Military,2003) I reckon even a Navy Medic could and more rightly suffer such stress. Just seems there ought be a better way to ask for help than this silly stuff. At least he appears not to have done a Major Hasan to avoid deployment.

Posted on September 8, 2011 at 5:45amAWOL in Naval Service is not used the same way as in the Army. Short periods of time missing are called UA in Naval terminology- Unauthorized Absence. This Sailor in the article was UA.
Report Post »A Corpsman is also a Naval term for our military enlisted medical – the Army- Air Force have people with similar jobs called Medics. Similar does not mean the same. I had much better and broader training and responsibility as a Corpsman then I did when I was a Medic.
Both Medics and Corpsmen should be proud of their heritage and work but the terms are not interchangeable.

Posted on September 8, 2011 at 2:22amI too was a Navy Hospital Corpsman assigned to the FMF. If I meet someone and they ask me what I did in the military I usually just tell them I was a “Hospital Corpsman”. If they seem confused and inquisitive I delve into the FMF part but I usually keep it at that. Most folks know what a Hospital Corpsman is so it is usaully not a problem.

Posted on September 7, 2011 at 7:10pmYep, to journalists maybe the term “medic” and “corpsman” are interchangeable, but not to service members. Fox TV is doing the same thing. You would think they would have someone on staff in tune with military lingo.

I visited a buddy in there (nothing serious) and it is definitely not a place you want to vacation. Good luck getting up at 4am and working mess duty ALL day. And lets not forget “the hole”. You dont want to be there either if you value the sun’s rays.

Posted on September 7, 2011 at 6:25pmHe never made any direct threats! How did they Navy go into his off base residence? Why would they esp if he was only UA for less than 24hours. So they found something he wrote in a book! I’ll bet that writing has nothing to do with why he was UA. But since we live in a world of bubble wrappings all the stops must be pulled out just in case. Many questions have I.

Posted on September 7, 2011 at 5:57pmYou know, I was wondering the same thing. I didn’t expect to see anything about his race/ethnicity and (sadly) figured it was another one like Major Hassan. Sad that there are so many of Muslim heritage or conversion that that’s the first thought. Now, what does that say about the “stereotype” that Napolitan put out about watching for middle aged white women dressed nicely?

Posted on September 7, 2011 at 5:36pmI can‘t believe the school wouldn’t allow the parents to pick up their kids! If there is a credible threat, why not have the kids go out of the school grounds, parents pick them up, or busses bring them somewhere else until they could go home ( if parents couldn’t be reached?). I am disgusted that the school enforces a procedure which could be harmful to the kids. Schools need better plans. I hope no one is hurt, and that the suspect is caught quickly.
Report Post »Seamus236
Posted on September 7, 2011 at 5:47pmHow about 3,200 students, the monumental traffic jam and an on-going criminal investigation is “why” parents can’t come to the school to pick up their children. Don’t know much about traffic patterns in southern Orange County or metropolitan areas do you? If there are/were explosives at the school, and the horde of parents descended upon the school, picking up their kids, and those explosives detonated, you would be on here shrilly (and hypocritically) claiming the Sheriff‘s Department didn’t make the right decision t keep people OUT of the danger zone.

Posted on September 7, 2011 at 5:26pmYou are correct — Navy Hospital Corpsmen do not have access to HE, unless they are with the SEALs. Furthermore, Corpsmen are Geneva Convention non-combatants and as such carry only a pistol for the defense of their wounded.

Posted on September 7, 2011 at 6:00pmHe wouldn’t. HE would be stored at the AHA (army term at least) and no one outside of personnel directly related to the HE would have access to it until it is signed out to be taken to a range, or otherwise transported.

Posted on September 7, 2011 at 6:30pmHe doesn’t, but because there is the element of him working at a Marine Corps base, the media naturally believe that there is ordnance just laying around and accessable to all concerned. I first heard this story on FOX sirius, then on the 760am out of San Diego while driving down to Coronado today…he was first thought to be a Marine, then a Naval Officer. Come to find out he was a pecker checker all along…go figure.
