AZ School District Suspends Controversial Mexican-American Studies Program

The Tucson Unified School District voted late Tuesday to end its controversial Mexican-American studies program, after part of its state funding was set to be cut off on the grounds that the curriculum violated state law.
The school district voted 4-1 to dismantle the program, meaning classes will be suspended immediately, the Arizona Daily Star reported.
Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal said Friday he was cutting the district’s state funding by 10 percent until it came into compliance, amounting to more than $1 million per month and leaving the district facing an immediate $4.9 million shortfall.
The state had long been at odds with the Tucson district over the program, with state officials contending that the classes promote reverse racism. An Arizona law passed last year — which directly targeted Tucson’s program — bans classes designed for a particular ethnic group or which “promote resentment toward a race of class of people.”

The district appealed Huppenthal’s original conclusion that the program violated state law, but an administrative law judge in December upheld his decision, clearing the way for funding cuts. The board opted not to pursue the matter further, citing prohibitive legal costs.
According to the Daily Star, all district board members who voted to suspend the program support revamping either the program or individual classes to make them more comprehensive and include the contributions of all ethnicities.
“Our chances of winning a legal case are slim,” board president Mark Stegeman said before the vote, the Tucson Citizen reported. “I think we should go back and make something that supports statute and that supports board policy.”
But not everyone at Tuesday’s meeting felt that way: As the vote outcome became clear, one member of the audience reportedly shouted, “Cowards! You are cowards!”
Board member Adelita Grijalva, the sole dissenting vote, called for the district to continue to defend the program and to challenge the law’s constitutionality.
“This is an issue that is not going to go away by this vote. When bad laws are written, they are usually picked up by other states. This is an opportunity to fight a bad law,” she said.
Salomon Baldenegro, a Latino community leader, also implored the board to fight harder to appeal, according to the Citizen.
Baldenegro said Arizona’s strict anti-illegal immigration law had already criminalized race, adding, “Now they are criminalizing our history.”

Posted on January 11, 2012 at 11:58amIf these teachers think the class is so important, why don’t they do the right thing andteach the class after regular school hours…at no charge to the school district. Problem solved – everyone should be happy.
My guess is that the teachers won’t do it for free, and if they did, the kids wouldn’t show up for the class. This is nothing more than a good old case of pot stirring.

But I’ve also come to understand that Tucson is much like CA while Phoenix is.. well, much more republican at least. The classes never would have been offered up in the Phoenix area, neither would a representative like Mexican Communist Raul Grijalva (just think of a male/mexican version of Maxine Watters) ever win up there. The liberals are in control in the Tucson area, which is why the 300 Million project Rio Nuevo project failed spectacularly and is now being investigated by the FBI.

Oh! my professor says that if you make $200,000 you are very wealthy and it is okay to hate those kind of people. Also, any private business I have found (yeah, even small businesses) is basically the enemy, and is okay to despise them just like we do lawyers he tells us. It mattters not your academic pedigree, you can still be a loser who is doing nothing to build wealth or help our nation prosper; in fact, some of these professors, not all, but many of them are some of the most dangerous people in the nation and would love nothing more than to see us fail. I have figured out why these kooks want all college to be free to everyone, it is because it will make their lives easier because they will be getting paid by the federal gov’t then and can basically keep teaching all the communist crap they want to a captive audience, you understand now what they’re up to? Know what your kids are learning from kindergarten thru college.

Just another aspect of promoting discord and division in this country – not that indifferent from what is being taught in the mosques of America to the Muslim young people.
Nor is it at all different from the racist diatribe being promoted by the progressives in the Congressional Black Caucus, which is absolutely pathetic. The racism that is being promoted pretty much invariably is substantially worse than whatever racism that might exist in white leadership in the Congress or otherwise.

Either way, Obama promised he would transform this country…and we are seeing how. They are wiping our laws off the books, and making their own laws to include international law. The gov’t elect argue more passionately for the rights of non-citizens, over the rights of americans, they pass laws against us to favor those who refuse citizenship, and when we say anything…we are labeled as racists. We face condemnation and ridicule, even hate crimes against us americans, and we are made fun of. I guess we know where the lefties are taking us, and it isn’t toward a recovery of America. Its the building of ObamaNation. We are not only losing the foundation that built America, but the nation itself, by our own gov’ts hands and laws. I have no problem with ethnic studies or Hispanics or anything, but when Tuscon cries out that evil America stole the Southwest from Mexico nearly 200 years ago (actually, Tuscon was part of the Gadsten PURCHASE) and that Arizona needs to be returned to Mexico, something has to be done. If they want to have Arizona returned to Mexico, I have an idea. Why don’t we let Tuscon and Pima County experiment with being the newest Mexican state for a little while, and then they can come back and tell us how “wonderful” it is to live in Mexico. Better yet, just give Tuscon back to Mexico and not it back.

Steel fencing, bars on the windows, pitbulls in the yard, cars jacked up everywhere and people sitting idle on the front porch. Thats all that will be accomplished.

When the truth about what these classes were really teaching came out (with the passing of the new state law) the enrollment in these classes dropped from around 1,000 down to around 200! The stuff they were teaching was racist, Marxist indoctrination!

Posted on January 11, 2012 at 2:06pmIf that ever happens, it will no longer be Tucson…it will be “Nogales North” If you want a birdseye view of what it will look like, look no further than across the border TO Nogales, or it you want to stay closer to home visit cities like Compton, San Bernadino, Modesto, and Stockton California, with a 50%+ Hispanic population (legal and illegal) or smaller little bergs like Woodlake, Irwindale, Tonyville, Yettum, Mendota and so on and so on and so on. Many of these places used to be quiet, respectable crime free places to live….for the most part, they are hell holes today.

As a former public school director, (not Arizona) last time I checked unless this is considered a “core” class, in the Tucsan Unified School District, it is considered an elective. The administrators, not the governing board (directors) should not be “putting” these students anywhere in an elective class, and further if it is a core class, putting students with Hispanic surnames automatically (unless they need remedial help) in this class violates a heck of a lot more than the eductional laws of the state of Arizona. This is like putting all German surnamed students in a class on Hitler and the Reich or Italian surnamed students in a class on studying the life and times of Mussolini. This school district receives state as well as federal funding to run their budget….and that is exactly why the slime ball AG Eric Holder will have his nose in the middle of this fiasco with another federal lawsuit before it is over.

I took a Mexican Politics, economy and culture class in college as an elective and it was a 5 month course on revolutions, corruption and death.
I feel bad for immigrants from Mexico and don’t fault them for wanting to leave a failing country but something has to be done about letting mass amounts of people coming over here unchecked. Increase pathways to legal immigration.

Are you talking about spending US taxpayers money to rebuild the entire Mexican infrastructure like clean water, electrical power, garbage service, building codes, paved roads, schools, housing, medical and dental services, etc?
Or, ethnic cleansing by the US combined military and naval forces.
I suspect that all the fire power, including nukes, to protect the current border means that option 2 is what you would do to Mexico itself.

They’ve all been taught incessantly about equal rights, fairness, not to discriminate based on the color of skin and so forth. But when your own group is being raised up, you care little about standing up and saying this is not right ya’ll. Whites did this in the 60′s and rightfully so, they stood against the status quo and raised a banner for freedom and equality for all. This battle was fought and won long ago.
Why do we then turn around and create another racist group out of thin air? Because the politicians love to pit us against each other for their own agendas of power and control. We are so easily manipulated in this way…the proof is right in front of you. Thank God however, people in power did stand up and say this is completely racist and stopped it. More guts like this will be needed to do the same thing all over this country.
Stop teaching kids to regard their respective races as unique and special. There are no such courses for Whites, so guess who is left out of this special feeling regarding their own kind? There are repercussions for this in that the White kids tend to adopt alternative lifestyles to feel unique…like going gay, tranny, bisexual, furry, comic hero etc. Its not natural but everyone is reaching for something to give them idenity like everyone they see is getting from the society at large.

Some individuals who are very smart have, but if you sit down and have a real heart to heart chat with even them, you‘ll find the seeds of hate deep down about the things they’ve been told how it was. If you live in Socal like I do, then you would be able to note how much latinos have been helped to make the transition from illegal to legit as far as their children (first gen) have made into the work place. Still can’t say that for the black community still trapped in self imposed ghettos around LA. This teaching is based on hatred not culture. It only teaches that they as a race should rally around hate for the common White man for what his ancesters did. My family tree had nothing to do with the SouthWest nor slavery of the South. Zero! But I am led to feel guilty for these things simply because of my skin color. This is called pay back and its based on racism.

Like when talking about nativity scenes I have said multiple times
I am FOR nativity scenes. I wouldn’t have a problem with and would support every believer to have a nativity on their front property. I wouldn’t care if every single one of my neighbors had a nativity scene. Two houses right around the corner from me had nativity scenes up and I thought they were nice.
I did argue against believers clamoring for nativity scenes on public property. My main argument was, “if nativity scenes are so important to you, why don’t you put one up on your own lawn, and not force them on public property, where it is obviously not representing everyone.”
And I don’t think my “rants” are unsolicited when I come to a thread and see downright hatred coming FROM Christians at gays, muslims and atheists and other groups.
Or how many times I get told I have a “radical agenda” or “am a plague” or get told “don’t worry, I will raise my kids to hate you.”

I think it’s ridiculous for congress to vote our motto “In God We Trust”(again in the 50s) when some people don’t trust in a God, and not everyone trusts in a God.

At this time, this appears to be their contribution to the ambiance of the city. When I visit there, I stay out of Tucson and spend time on areas that are mostly Hispanic free so I don’t get caught in the cross-fire.
