AZ Sheriff Claims Feds Demanding Border Agents Reduce Illegal Alien Arrests

A sheriff in Arizona says he has information that Border Patrol officials have repeatedly been told to reduce — sometimes stop — their arrests of illegal aliens at the U.S./Mexico border.
According to Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever, Border Patrol officials have told him that the government is pressuring them to “scare people” instead of arrest them.
“The senior supervisor agent is telling me about how their mission is now to scare people back,” Dever said in an interview with FoxNews.com. “He said, ‘I had to go back to my guys and tell them not to catch anybody, that their job is to chase people away. … They were not to catch anyone, arrest anyone. Their job was to set up posture, to intimidate people, to get them to go back.”

Dever said his recent conversation with the Border Patrol supervisor was the latest in a series of communications on the subject that he has had with various federal agents over the last two years. Dever said he plans to relay the substance of these conversations when he testifies under oath next month before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
But an official with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection vehemently denied Dever’s accusations.
“The claim that Border Patrol supervisors have been instructed to underreport or manipulate our statistics is unequivocally false,” Jeffery Self, commander of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Joint Field Command in Arizona, said in a written statement to Foxnews.com.
“I took an oath that I take very seriously, and I find it insulting that anyone, especially a fellow law enforcement officer, would imply that we would put the protection of the American public and security of our nation’s borders in danger just for a numbers game,” he said. “Our mission does not waiver based on political climate, and it never will. To suggest that we are ambiguous in enforcing our laws belittles the work of more than 6,000 CBP employees in Arizona who dedicate their lives to protect our borders every day.”
Dever is set to testify next month in front of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and said he will tell his story under oath.
“I will raise my hand to tell the truth and swear to God, and nothing is more serious or important than that,” he said. “I’m going to tell them that, here’s what I hear and see every day: I had conversation with agent A, B, C, D and this is what they told me.”

When I was still in the Texas National Guard and I got sent to Rio Grande Valley sector to help the Border Patrol, I would stand in their muster meetings before our shift would began. Every single day the Supervisor would tells us to either do “turn-backs“ or ”apprehensions” in order to fluff up the numbers that the RGV sector needed to please the whims of politics and Secretary of DHS.

By “reducing” the # of arrests those “numbers” are verifiably (is that a word?) decreased and can “attributed” to solar flares if government wants to say that is the reason for the drop.

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 9:55pmI believe this story to be completely and totally true and here is why…I was a Border Patrol Agent for 16 years before breaking my back during an arrest attempt of approximately 30 illegal immigrants more than 125 miles north of the border.
Our Sector headquarters regularly and with great emphasis, directed agents from border cities to operate in my stations “Area of Responsibility (AOR)” 125 miles north of the border. The reasoning is this…any apprehensions made by those agents went on their arrest records indicating that they were apprehended on the border and that means the border in that area is secure. The agents of my station were forbiden to work in the southern areas of our “AOR” in support of that intended numbers fudging. In addition to that…certain well traveled areas utilized by illegal immigrants were placed off limits to patrol AND for several months…the agents of my station were pulled from our “AOR” and temporarily reassigned to the border stations.
Now, what everyone needs to understand is…interior border patrol stations are utilized as a last line of defense against those that successfully make it passed the border and as such, interior border patrol stations are utilized kind of as an “Illegal Immigrant Barometer” to gauge the amount of illegal aliens making it passed the border. So, the more illegal immigrants caught north of the border…indicates that they are not being stopped AT the border…what better way to show that the border enforcement efforts are effective…send Border Station Border Patrol agents north to catch the illegals that should be caught by interior Border Patrol Agents…apprehensions by interior Stations fall…Border Station apprehensions rise…
And…FYI, I filed formal charges of misconduct, gross mismanagement and abuse of power charges against the management of my Sector Border Patrol management for these actions with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel. Guess what happened? I was called from D.C. to verify my allegations, which I did. The investigator made it clear that with the evidence I had provided…this was of the utmost importance and I would be contacted for further information. Two weeks went by and I recieved a letter by mail that basically said “Nothing wrong here…move along” and not one single justification in the letter referenced my specific charges. THEN, Three days after I recieved the letter…I was called into a supervisors office where it was made clear to me that “Management” was concerned for my “Mental health and mental stability” and maybe I should get out of the field and take an office job for awhile…Translation?…Sit down, shut up or we will find you unfit for duty and terminate you…they made that abundantly clear…

So if a border patrol guard gets shot while trying to “scare” the illegals away, Homeland Security can still brag that their arrests are way down. Do they really think that people that behead others will get scared away?
